Suddenly Seymour!! Joseph Gordon-Levitt Is Eyeing LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS!!
The Kidd here...
Every day it seems like there's more and more news of remakes after reboots after more remakes to wade through, and finally... FINALLY... today we catch wind of such a project I can get behind, because right out of the gate it sounds like a helluva lot of fun.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt is working on developing LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS.
The Hollywood Reporter reports that JGL is eyeing to star in LITTLE SHOP as Seymour, the loserish florist who comes into contact with a plant from outer space who needs to feed on blood in order to survive. As the plant gets bigger, Seymour gets more famous until eventually only one of them can survive.
Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who wrote Broadway's SPIDER-MAN: TURN OFF THE DARK, is set to pen the script, which be a turn-off for some of you, but I can't see how anyone, even if they tried their hardest, could fuck up a redo of LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, which was a remake in its own right.
Roger Corman's 1960 film (with an early Jack Nicholson) became an off-Broadway musical, where it really gained popularity before it was done as a film starring Rick Moranis in 1986. It was revived for Broadway in 2003, but that run was short-lived.
I was hoping JGL might go with something a little juicier when I first heard this come down, perhaps the sadistic dentist Orin Scrivello, which would have been quite the departure from his other roles... but I'll settle for him going nerdy for another revamping of this material.

Movie to Musical to Movie to Reboot..this shit's getting ridiculous.
by openthepodbaydoorshal
-
Just mirror the Moranis one, beat for beat, maybe get Burton or a Burtonesque Director, and don't try to modernize it.

I just hope Corman is laughing all the way to the bank...as he has been for the past

Bet you Audrey is played by Emma Stone....the reboot gal of the moment.

-
Just fuck off
-
once with Glen Hansard and Marketa irglova. they should stay away from that.
-
Decent actor, yes, but he was so wishy-washy and pussy-whipped in 500 DAYS OF SUMMER that I'll never see him any differently.
-
Yay!
-
I forgot I read another story before coming back to this, oh well yes but is it a musical?

stifler's mom - dont you get it...he basically played the female role in the relationship

It's clear Hollywood has lost all ability to create new properties. Lazily relying on old played out ideas.
by borisdoris
And they wonder how cinema numbers are dropping. Avatar shit as it is did well as it offered something ORIGINAL.
-
I have faith this movie will remain faithful to the original while being modern for kids... I think jgl is an impeccable actor given the right script... I think he would play a fine seymour, but who plays audrey because I had such a big crush and hard on for Audrey, Those TITS, and her soft demure voice....

How about a movie based on Stephen King's killer plant novel
by Samuel Fulmer
That he never finished.
-
... there is absolutely NO REASON to remake this film.
-

At least this is a concept that could lend itself to a remake
by Samuel Fulmer
I guess they haven't overdone the killer plant movie genre yet.
-
Guess even you're not pretentious enough to be VS. something that doesn't even have a script yet.
-
Why, why do a reboot. I guess it could have been worse. He could have wanted to take Obi Wans role in Moulin Rouge.
-
Only thing original in that was the effects. Story's been done a thousand times.
-
You can't.
-
I mean, if it's a remake of the Corman, why bother? If it's a redo of the musical, at least you can do the original ending, with "Don't Feed the Plants".
-
May 3, 2012, 3:44 p.m. CST
Really? You can't see how anyone could fuck up a redo of LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS?
by Emperor_was_a_jerk
Hollywood fucks up movies all the time. It's like, their main thing they do.
-
in any form. It's not funny and the songs suck.
-
Jgl is amazing to watch and I love just a about everything he touches but this seems like a bad idea. Jgl don't go down the remake dark side.
-

As usual, current remake = bad. 80's remake = Perfectly acceptable...
by Jay
Is there no end to the hypocrisy? If you enjoyed the Frank Oz adaptation of the musical remake, than there's no way you can be against this new one at the moment. It doesn't matter how different or similar they could be. You can't act as though one remake is perfectly acceptable and not the other one.
-
Audrey II was an amazing piece of work. I love even more that they had to go in slow motion when singing and everything because of how elaborate the puppetry was - you'd NEVER know based on the end result. Plus, Steve Martin's dentist. Perfection.

bantuwind-Here's the issue people may have without knowing it
by Samuel Fulmer
The 1980's remakes had actual talent (or at least people that were still talented at that point) behind them. Think David Cronenberg, John Carpenter, Brian De Palma, Frank Oz, etc... Today's talent pool blows, so of course anytime people on here hear about a remake, reboot, etc. they cringe. More than likely it will be shit, but then again, more than likely most new films in general will be shit because the talent out there is mostly subpar at best.
-
with Josh Groban as Seymour, shame I have no talent nor any idea how to direct anything resembling a major motion picture
-
The musical I mean. We watch it all the time. I'm assuming JGL is going to remake the musical version...with the songs intact? Sounds like one of those =do it just to do it= projects because if all the songs are the same I don't see how they think they can make it any better than Frank Oz did. I'm sure the plant will be CGI, which is kinda too bad since the puppet was so expertly done.

is so great is very simple. jim henson' s creature shop.

Oz also remade The Stepford Wives. And Carpenter also remade Village of The Damned...
by Jay
Talent only goes so far when you have a shitty screenplay. Just because you grew up with one remake, it doesn't negate the fact the it's still a remake. Imagine if the Internet had been around in the 80s...
-
I'm not saying this is a GOOD thing, I'm just saying it's what's GOING to happen. He already did essentially that role in an American Dad episode that parodied Little Shop. That's just math, son.
-
You know they'll do it as CGI creature, much as Id love them to do it pratically. I'd love the, to mo cap a performance only to turn it into a plant, it's so ridiculous
-
Some more of your Hollywood crap!

The musical remake had almost nothing to do wtih the original....and it was a FUCKING MUSICAL!
by Jaster Mareel
The original black and white movie was an actual horror film, albeit a pretty bad one. Had sort of a Basketcase vibe to it, only not nearly as inventive or interesting. The musical was a fucking COMEDY! Steve Martin doing his greaser sado-masochistic dentist is the highlight. calling it a remake in the sense we are accustomed to today is ridiculous because it was a complete and total reinvention. THIS remake will be the same sort of retread shit we are all sick of. Doing it almost exactly the same but with different actors and a few story flourishes, oh and lots of shitty CGI.
-
I said guys that have talent still or did at the time. Just like now, if we have people that have actual talent and are good film makers now, I don't mind remakes. Hell Fincher remade the Girl With the Dragon Tatoo into an excellent film, but there are few directors out there now that even have half of his talent. As far as Carpenter goes, the man stopped making good films in 1988. If I saw he was directing anything, let alone a remake I think I would avoid it.

-THIS remake will be the same sort of retread shit we are all sick of.
by Jay
And you know this how? This hypocrisy is fucking laughable.
-
It could be interesting. It started as camp, was camped to the extreme for the musical, time to go a different route.
-
...since all the hipster geeks claim JGL as a man of integrity as if he's one of their own...and then he goes to reboot a reboot of a reboot. The guy is as Hollywood as they come and all of you hipster douches who claim him as one of your own will quickly realize he can give a fuck about being original.
-
One of my favorite movie musicals period. Pitch perfect casting all the way. I'm a big fan of Joseph Gordon Levitt but Rick Moranis totally owned that role. He developed so much sympathy for the character that audiences rejected the original ending completely. That's really saying something considering how perfect the original ending was. Unfortunately the modern version would ruin it right off the bat with a CGI Audrey II. The tangible nature of the puppet was part of the charm.
-
Unfortunately, if we could gauge someone talent for making a certain movie before it was made, there would be no bad movies. So your whole argument is absolutely moot. There have been good remakes from bad directors, and there have been bad remakes from good directors. There is no standard. People just keep adding new layers to their argument in order to justify their favorite remakes. Like you just did with your talent comment. But It doesn't make a difference.
-
I mean look at the chechlist: Rick Moranis being his Rick Moranis-ist - CHECK Steve Martin being COMPLETELY over the top genius? - CHECK It's a cameo but.. John Candy being a bit wacky.. DING DING DING (lol) A very very wacked out Bill Murray? CHECK and doble Check.. some catching songs.. a little blood.. and really a hell of alot of FUN. I honestly wonder are they going to go the whole update route, rather than setting the film I am trying to remember.. but I would say very very early 60s. Are they going to try and update it? Please no. Levitt is a great choice if the obvious, and really, ONLY choice for the Seymour role. But I don't know if he will play as likable losery as Moranis, and if he does.. what's the point of a remake? I just can't see the point.. the 80s version was a remake already of a broadway show that was based on a film.. now we have a remake of the adaption of the broadway show? as was oointed out, I guess they could include the original ending (which isn't even included on the, currently in print edition anyway, dvd). The original ending was included on the original dvd release, but was pulled after "rights issues". And.. how can you not like Levitt? I mean from Third Rock.. to the cameo in H20, 10 Things I Hate About You to some of hire more serious work. I've heard nothing but good things about Mysterious Skin and The Lookout, he was excellent in "Brick". I was kind of disappointed with his role (not necessarily him) in "Inception" but I enjoyed the strange change of pace with "Hesher" thought he was great in "50/50" and "500 Days of Summer", and am looking forward to "Looper". I would have mentioned GI Joe.. but honestly the film, over all wasn't all that worth mentioing good or bad.. just a popcorn movie that I saw once.. and never had the desire to spin again, but I didn't walk out in disgust either.
-
If you liked the music from Disney musicals - Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Little Mermaid - but haven't yet seen the 80's version of LSOH, check it out. The music is fantastic. It's how Howard Ashman and Alan Menken got their foot into the door at Disney. Of course, the Steve Martin & Bill Murray cameo is worth the price of admission alone. But "Skidrow" and "Somewhere That's Green" are as good as songwriting can get, and the latter is really funny too.

Why don't they just finish the ending to the 1986 flick??
by performingmonkey
Frank Oz had a load of crazy shit planned (and some of it shot) for the original darker ending involving the plant WINNING!! They just didn't have the budget to do the effects for it taking over the world and whatever. They should just finish this now with CGI and put it out there, not remake it with this week's generic actor.
-
The issue is that no woman can possibly live up to Ellen Greene's performance as Audrey. As a theatre geek and an actor and I've seen the show performed on stage a dozen times. Ellen Green's Audrey is nothing short of iconic. It overshadows every performance to the point where the actress can either choose to play it like the original, which can never live up, or do something radically different, which becomes about proving a point. Either way, it's impossible to not reference the original icon. Best to leave this one alone, really. Plus, Emma Stone doesn't have the pipes.
-
I will bet 10 bucks on Zooey Deschanel as Audrey as she and Joseph Gordon Levitt are great friends in real life. http://youtu.be/R2rRxsge35s
-
...how many of you have actually seen it? Yes, the movie adaptation was entertaining, and gets it about 85% right, but the ending was awful and changed or dropped several really great numbers, and though many people just adore Steve Martin, that version of the Dentist completely misses the point of the original character and just turns him into a burlesque comic relief. But Ellen Greene was fucking amazing...it definitely had that going for it.
-
and a half eye open about Joseph Gordon-Levitt With the way we're loosing more and more classic, classy and classical actors these days This young man is one of the few that I believe that can stand up, fill the shoes and or pull the rug out from under us He has the skill set Oh but who gives a fuck about yet another remake of a very suck ass story
-
Actually, it wasn't a budget issue at all, and the filming was completely finished for the original ending -- it only needed final editing and final visual effects. The reason it was never finished is that test screenings didn't go well with the original ending (test audiences wanted Seymour to win!), so the ending was changed and the darker version was abandoned. It's a shame; I greatly prefer the original ending, and it makes WAY more sense, dramatically speaking. For anybody else who's inclined, you can see the original ending (in its unfinished state, anyway) on YouTube.

Why do I get the feeling that we're stuck in a time culture loop, and that Hollywood will continue to re-make the same 200 movies for the next 50 years?
by dasheight

I'm more interested in learning when the Blu-Ray will be released with the full color, non-workprint quality original 'Everybody Dies' ending is supposed to come out. Frank Oz recently alluded to that being in the works...
-
Little Shop lends itself to multiple versions. I love the original, I love the Moranis remake, I love the stage versions. It's a wonderful piece of art in any form, and with Levitt involved as Seymour, yeah I can see this being fun. Will it be better than the Moranis version...? Nah. But it might be as good, if they really go for it and Levitt puts some passion and fun into playing the role. I can definitely see this working. Just, please God, no cgi Audrey II.

Yyyyyyyyyyyup

You don't see something wrong with a remake of a remake? Typical. Hollywood blows and so do you.

Will it be a traditional musical or a dark gritty re-imagining shot found footage style?
by lv_426
Joseph Gordon Levitt will fight Audrey 2.0 (a sentient alien cyber-plant that has wired itself to the Internet) with a prototype powered armor exoskeleton (like those Orkin Man commercials from the 80's) he steals from the military. It isn't going to be called Little Shop of Horrors (too old timey of a title). Prepare yourself for... A U D R E Y 2 . 0

I'm surprised we haven't seen a big budget Roland Emmerich style remake of The Day of the Triffids.

re: Surprised Joseph Gordon Levitt is doing something like this...
by Have_Penis_Will_Travel
yeah me too at first I thought maybe he lost a bet but usually that just involves wearing a really bad tie Or having to run naked from point A to point B but having to re-make this movie could count as that Given the choice I'd go for the tie or the point A to point B thing
-
day of the triffids...

Maybe it's a straight remake of the first movie? I'd be down with that. Do a horror remake.
