Avengers rocked, and this come from a hardcore DC/Batman fan! LOVED THE MOVIE!
by MariusXe
Just came back form the theatre! I need a JLA movie in a similar fashion, ASAP! Hulk was the showstealer! Could've had a bit more Thor, but other than that... WOW. Next to TDK the best of the Genre! LOVED IT LOVED IT!
-
I need an edit button.
-
I really don't know if movies with only one of those characters will be enough in the future! Screw Iron Man 3, Thor 2 and Captain America 2! I want more Avengers!
-
What a way to start this movie summer! If TDKR and Prometheus can hold this level of genre goodness, this will be an awesome year for geeks around the world!
-
I am sorry I doubted you Joss. Really. I thought this was a trainwreck in the making, but it was so, so great.

SPOILER From the moment that Nick Fury throws Coulson's cap cards on the table through when Hulk catches Iron Man after he nukes the Chitari, that whole hour of non-stop geek action is probably the most FUN I've ever had in a theater. Cap yelling directions at the cop. Cop questioning for a second and his reaction. GOLD Black Widow going all sorts of badass on the Chitari hover craft Hawkeye with the no-look bomb-arrow to the face Thor making using the Empire State building as his personal Chitari electric chair Iron Man on his suicide mission Hulk in.... actually EVERYTHING the Hulk does. Wow, can't wait to see it again next week. I bow to you Mr. Whedon. You did it!

Fucking Amazing! - the best superhero movie i've seen!
by rakesh patel
a 25year wait, and they got it right. I'm actually going to have to watch this again tomorrow.
-
Amazing movie. Not a weak link in it. Fucking Whedon man. Who would've though?
-
Great film. The Hulk is perfectly realised, Loki is a great villain and it's so funny and exciting. GO SEE THIS FILM. I give it 5/5 and I didn't give the previous films more than 3/5.
-
The film has exceeded all expectations I had, and with Whedon at the helm I had high expectations. The big action sequences were great. However, it is in the quiet moments that the magic happens. Whedon's writing really shines through during these moments. The German man standing in a crowd declaring that he would not bow almost brought me to tears. They have pulled off something so amazing in creating a great story that isn't diluted by too many characters. This film is so well balanced and just a great movie all around. It deserves your time and your money. I'm went through a second and third puberty watching it.

Bloody Brilliant! Really was the sum of it's parts and more.
by Bluetone
Loved the relationships between individuals and the group as a whole. Hulk stole the show, and thought Mark Ruffalo did a good job as Banner, hopefully we'll get to see more of the two of them. I can only imagine that Marvel are quickly bashing out a deal with Joss Whedon for the next one. They'd be stupid not to!
-
Just saw it tonight, and apart from a very contrived "let's all argue with each other, before we'll all work together" scene it is the best marvel movie yet. The final 30 minutes is probably the best action packed scenes we've seen. Can't wait to see it again. It also had quite a few laugh out loud moments as well, which is always good.
-
Saw it yesterday in France, in 3D, in a crowded theater. The second part of the movie is really an comic-book action fest, but there's also some great scenes in the first hour (the Germany sequence, or Black Widow "escape"). The 3D conversion has been seriously done, but it would certainly have been better if it was a "native" one. The weak point for ma was the art direction. Costumes (Cap Am, Hawkeye, for example) are disappointing, as Chitauris' design. The big surprise was how funny the movie is. Even if characters are seriously presented and true to what they are, there's a lot of humor and the whole theater exploded in laughs, at least 3 or 4 times. It seems in a way conceived as an anti-Dark Knight, which is far from being stupid. The bright colors, the humourous dialogue, the comic-book generosity, it all looks as Marvel said : Nolan's approach is not the only path for comic-book movies. Hail that ! Let's face it, it's the kind of movie we've been dreaming to see since we were 10 and reading funny books. Thanks to Marvel and Whedon for this great moment !
-
Thought it was great. Definitely the best of the Marvel movies. Hulk stole the show once he shows up. The whole place was laughing when he slams Loki and gives Thor a sucker punch. My wife thought it rocked too. Agree with the previous post about how the standalone hero movies are going to seem small in comparison now.

It was good, not great. There is no real story to speak of & if you haven't seen the other movies you'll have trouble with it. It's more a series of sketches and set pieces rather than a flowing story. Whedon obviously has a soft spot for the hulk as he ge
by cameron
...Giving each character a segment to show off means they all get a bit of time but no one really gets to be interesting because there is simply no time because the film cuts to the next thing. It sags in parts and really to be honest you are just waiting to see the big fight at the end when the avengers finally get together. Overall 7/10 for entertainment story gets 5/10 and the sfx are surprisingly average 7/10 transformers dotm - i hate the movie, but the effects are far better than the avengers - and IM2 have better cgi. the clever and immense marketing has made this a 'must see' but it's no big moment in cinema like star wars, the matrix, tdk, and Avatar were. Enjoy the movie, but don't rave about it because everyone else tells you too. Geeks will rave about this movie just because all the comic characters are in it regardless of if it's anygood. Whedonhas the colourful heros, but he don't have the story telling skills of sense of drama a skilled director brings. TDKR will be a much better movie technically and story wise but given all the hype surrounding the avengers i'll be surprised if it takes more money. But the avengers will be stomped by The Hobbit at christmas, as that creepy guy says, FACT!

DON'T BOTHER TO WATCH IT IN 3D. It causes this uncanny nagging eyestrain.
by AxeEmAll
Saw it the other day here in the Philippines. The plot is solid. The CGI of the Hellcarrier, the Hulk, and THAT mid-credit surprise is astounding. The banter among the characters is awesome.
-
the scope of it is huge and yet it manages to be so detailed and covers so much specific and even subtle ground essential to further understanding of the characters. the dialogue is strikingly good, and the action made me feel like i'd been spoiled rotten. Hulk and Black Widow were especially impressive. And there are some moments where the fans are gonna curse out loud in satiating shock. my only concern now is the sequel being set-up with that incredible cameo during the end-credits. if Whedon doesn't flesh it out and agree to being it to fruition, who else can we trust with something of such enormity? The Inifinity Gauntlet? Holy. Shit.

JUST SEEN IT. BIGGEST PILE OF SHIT EVER AND I WILL TELL YOU WHY
by Andy Dodd
I bet you've all just clicked to have a look. Well, fuck you. TRUTH IS: IT'S A GODDAM GREAT MOVIE. A BEAST OF A RIDE. 3D WELL - IT'S 3D. TBH, I didn't notice or care. Watch it in 2-D and save yourself a quid or two (or buck or two for you yankie fucking doodles) BUT: Whedon pulls it off. Don't listen to anyone who says there is no characterisation. There is: They are called Iron Man 1 & 2, Incredible Hulk, Captain America: First Avenger and Thor. Back story done. Just enjoy the ride. Will it fall on my top ten ever movies. No. But it was worth the wait and it'll be the most fun you have had in a movie theatre for a long time I like turtles.

I do though, I really do. Oh, and I like Avengers. But, not as much as turtles.
-
Casually punching Thor, his ally and punishing Loki for being a Puny God who loves to talk... the theatre exploded. I also loved what a giant dork Captain America can be, while still being badass.
-
The iron man missle bit kinda reminded me of the destruction of the ship in ID4 I think they missed a trick with the council, in these types i really want to see huge stars. image instead of powers booth patrick stewart, and sean connery. yeah i know its the cost.. but one day in this or a star council scene it will have cameos from famous actors who will waive their fee, because they are fanboys. i think the interactions between the whole group was great. stark and banners mutual appreciation, stark and rogers rubbing up against each other initially then finding a mutual respect. hulk and thors face off.. all perfctly handled. i liked haweye, this was essentially his fiorst movie, his cameo in thor i fel was too small to gaugem, but he slotted right in there. widow i felt had a better run of it compared to iron man. actually had an appreciation of her talents. sad to see coulson depart, but he was the catalyst needed. fury was good because he was understated, he played in the background as well he should have. hill, i really dont know much about her character.. is she a cyborg or something? i though i saw a metalatic gash wound on her face. I havent watched watched himym since season 1, but she looks hot in the movie. cap taking charge with cop excellent hullk smash brilliant. loki smash hilarious thor punch lol funny the action athe the nd was brilliant. watching the last 40 minutes of the last ransfomers movie it was too much action and no story, im thankful they didnt go for a smah everything and forget the story sfx fest. loki played the villian really well. and i had a classic "v" moment when the guy stood up to him when everyone was kneeling. did i see a triforce on starks black sabbath t-shirt or was i seeing things? I started collecting comics when i first saw the 5 issue of secret wars. I was just astounded by the fact there were so many comic book characters. i had of course known of batman, superman, hulk, spiderman.. but iron man? captain america? i had no idea. That got me into comics and into sci fi. i was fucking hooked. and to see those heroes on screen with their backs to each other in a circle, ready to fight.. well i just felt like a fucking kid again. I cant snark or hate on something this good. especially for something to turn out so perfect after waiting a Quarter of a century to see. Yeah i know it sounds ridiculous, but i am in fucking awe of this. Their is something completely satisfying that people who have lived a while will only understand and appreciate. Good things come to those who wait. Normally it isnt true. but if you've waited for this, then well done. you've been rewarded. You have to see this on the big screen.

SOMEBODY SHIT IN YOUR CEREAL. Comparing The Avengers with TDKR? TDKR rises is a completly different animal. It will be amazing. It's fantasy, but it's grounded. Just fucking enjoy the Avengers for what it is.

by notspock2
Oh, and the film is awesome. Too many favourite bits to mention. The Captain America/flying monkey joke almost sent the theatre I was in into unstoppable fits of laughter, and what Hulk does to Loki is one for the ages. Always loved Whedon, and think he was the only realistic choice to do the Avengers justice, and that he has.
-
I'd like to see Pym as giant man in avengers 2. I look at this tall chick smashing against a wall and see ti for pym. and if dc made a movie like this.. well it would be fucking awesome http://goo.gl/JW0v3

Just got in from seeing the film, and as enjoyable as it was I can't say I was completely blown away by it. There are problems with structure and pacing, with an awfully long, talky, claustrophobic section aboard the helicarrier. The main characters also occasionally feel rather like they're all doing guest cameos in someone else's show - there's not a strong sense of ownership as in their individual properties, and it therefore doesn't completely gel. Also, I wasn't blown away by Joss's dialogue. The "funny stuff", which you can usually rely on him for, wasn't, really. The film also highlights the problems in putting together characters with such diverse levels of powers. At times, it didn't feel Cap was any more effectual than a crossing guard. What I did like was Scarlett as the Widow, Ruffalo as a slightly 'off' Banner and the handling of the Hulk. Hiddleston makes for a decent villain, even if the character's actions didn't make total sense, and it was good to see Samuel L back in shape and kicking ass. All in all, good, and I'll need to see it again before making a final judgement, but at this stage sadly a case of the whole being somehow less than the sum of the parts.
-
... after he slammed Loki around? The entire theater was going nuts at that scene, so I couldn't hear Hulk's only line.
-
As Loki was just screaming about being a god before Hulk got his hands on him.
-
hmmmf..... puny God
-
Fuck me, what a film. I have ZERO complaints or shoulda woulda coulda's (Cap's costume doesn't count as nobody likes it). Obvious spoilers follow; Mark Ruffalo, where have you been all my life? Best portrayal of Banner EVER. LOVED the way they changed Banner from being Mr Woe is Me to being Mr I'm ALWAYS Angry. When he punched that thing out, the audience erupted. When Hulk charged through that office, the audience erupted. When he casually did a "Left Turn Clyde" on Thor...yes, the audience erupted. But when Loki was mouthing off only to be ragdolled into a crater? The roof came off the cinema. The others were great as well, RDJ completely owns Tony Stark, Evans bit with the cops & Loki fight were class, and who doesn't love Thor? I wonder if many other showings will have a loud "aaaah (I see)" sigh when it's revealed Hawkeye is actually shooting a rope when falling, not an arrow as is the common thought. Was sad for Coulson to go, but totally understand the reasoning. Hope we get more Maria Hill in the next round of Marvel movies, Cobie is simply stunning.
-
been avoiding reviews til I saw this thing.... but now gorging on them One newspaper guy sez Hawkeye looks like Martin Freeman, on steroids, with a bow. And he does. Yes. He does. Brilliant.

It truly was excellent, I thought the 3D was very good, and I have no doubt will have MASSIVE repeat viewings.
by Dirkblack

I'm watching it again 2 more times. It was fun all the way---a lot of overlapping story arcs plus a lot of "oh that's why they did/said that moments". Hulk is just BADASSS all the way--even when he's Banner (spoiler). I like Downey's performance though---he takes the character to multiple levels of credibility much like in the comic book. 4.5 out of 5 totems. Now the wait for TDKR begins.....
-
The only thing the French should get first is a meteor strike.
-
It was an amazing movie. Still buzzing after seeing it tonight in the UK. Joss Whedon deserves all the accolades for making this film happen. It's funny, action packed and moves at a great pace without short changing any of the characters. This Hulk is easily the best version I've seen on film. He somehow conveys the rage and seems, at times, more coherent than the rest of the Avengers. The scene with Hulk/Loki has become my favourite superhero movie scene. The cinema I was in exploded at that. When the helicarrier took flight it made me feel like I was seeing a comic book on-screen for the first time. I will e seeing this again it's just simply a fun time at the movies. Well done, Joss. Make Mine Marvel.

I can't believe no one has raved about that.
-
Wedon, really nailed the dynamic and tensions within the group. And theres a lot of fitting humorous moments throughout the movie, to make it all work. in regards to humor i like how its line with Iron Man 1. The rumor about the second post credit scene is total bull. They didn't show anything here (EU). I hope they make Thanos and overall big villain, like Darth Vader, so they use him for Avengers 2, but save the final battle for Avengers 3. Perhaps i'm getting ahead of myself, but you really expect them to go big with this.
-
From Portugal: This is by far the best Marvel movie ever!!! What a ride!! Watched it again with my grandmother today actually... She hadn't seen the previous standalone movies but she loved it!! The Hulk was the character to get right for me. None of the previous versions appealed to me even though I prefer the Ang Lee version... Forget both of them because Whedon did it!!! The Hulk is AWESOME in every scene he's in! But the scene when Banner says "I'm always angry..." and changes and punches the SHIT out of that flying whatever they call it... everyone was clapping in the theater!!! And the Hulk VS Loki scene is priceless!!! But the real surprise was seeing THANOS after the credits!!! I don't wanna see more standalone movies!!! I WANT MORE AVENGERS DAMMIT!!! Can't wait to watch it again and I hope there's an extended version coming in blu-ray!!!
-
Just returned from the cinema. Great pacing and an uncanny and intense finale. And Thanos is coming. Give me Avengers 2 yesterday. Hulk was the best. Great Whedon humor and when you manage to have a whole theater laughing simultaneously multiple times you just kick ass. Avengers has restored my faith in Hollywood a little. Best superhero movie ever and I don't see any other movie top it this year. And the trailers didn't give away that much. Lots of holy shit moments. Thank you Whedon and cast.
-
crow is on the menu, order up!
-
Knowing it's still to come (and it doesn't come where it looks like it comes) rendered the end a bit predictable.. Still a great moment, but I'd rather in retrospect have not known about it.
-
The Thor/Iron-Man smackdown is brilliant and the interplay between everyone was really well handled. My only gripe is that I'm sure I saw that last hour in Transformers and GI Joe. 4/5
-

-
but were you as invested in the characters in Transformers and GI Joe as you were in The Avengers? Because for me the real difference was there... not in what we see because it IS very similar but I think the character work iwas so good that it made me care more about them.
-
I'm really glad the theatre was dark so no one could see the massive stupid grin on my face for most of the movie. I loved when Stark asks Banner what his secret is to keeping calm "big bag of weed?". And the monkey joke! Half the audience nearly asphyxiated laughing.
-
you believed it. sucker.
-
The difference, is that you give a shit when it happens here...
-
Seriously great film and I had a little bit of a sex wee when Thanos appeared, unfortunately some of the youngsters thought it was Darkseid so I had to correct them on it. Youth of today know nowt :)
-
... So many stand out moments, haven't left the cinema in a long time with so many kick ass scenes swirling around in my head. Thanks Joss.
-
The Avengers have assembled!!!!!!! (",)
-
And the worst part is that we enjoyed it.
-
This movie was a lot more than I was expecting. The characters are given their space, and their place. Everyone has a usefull role. Everybody sines at one point or the other. Marvel would be crazy if they didn't make another Hulk movie after this one. Really hope they make a smash hit wth this one and up the ante wth the stand alone pictures. I mean Thanos?!?! Holy Crap!
-
for better or worse, the lid is off the comics universe now... the tech is there, the actors are up for it, the money guys are rubbing their Avenger bulges.... simple 'origin and beat-the-bad-guy' superhero films will still happen, I'm sure, but Mr Whedon has set the scene for superhero-ish/sci-fi films that can go much further PS nevermind Batman... my fingers are crossed for DREDD pps and SOMEONE hire Whedon to direct an Iain M Banks movie....'Consider Phlebas' would be a good start...
-
touche' m'sieur Pussycat, touche'
-
Two of the greatest cinema moments of all-time. Absolutely tremendous. The cinema erupted both times. Nice to see Whedon having a massive sucess like this after all the shit Fox has thrown at him in the past. Now he'll have the clout to become a major-league player in cinema.
-

I have to watch it in 3D because I wanted to see in IMAX. I'm disappointed to hear that it's not good to see in 3D. I have to point out that I'm one of the haters of 3D. I wish it would just fuck off altogether, but I love Imax and that's the price I have to pay!
-
In fact nobody said it. That kinda pissed me off. Also I didn't like that it was in 1.85:1 but that's mostly because I'm a sucker for 2.39:1. The 3D added nothing and the film suffered in dark scenes, including the Thor v Iron Man fight. Speaking of fights, Thor v Hulk could have been a bit longer. The ending was also a little convenient. Maybe if the possibility of nuking Manhattan had been brought up before the final battle it would have worked better. It was still fine. Also, Powers Boothe? Awesome. Overall, this movie kicks major ass. Hulk was pretty much perfect. Forget solo movies, Hulk is in his element with people around him to play off. Also the final transformation was brilliant.
-
tough getting all those big characters to gel properly and not seem forced. well done joss whedon.
-
one of the best 3D conversions so far, didn't stress my eyes at all.
-
any geeks care to fill us in on why he's good. don't really like all the space shit in marvel comics. prefer my villains from earth.
-
The trailers DO NOT do it justice. . Much as I liked the trailers, the movie itself is 1000x better. Usually reversed. Every character is realized, they all get tight backstories, the wordplay between them all is awesome (best iron man dialogue to date), and the HULK freaking kills it. If Ruffalo doesn't get his own Hulk movie after this... There is not an ounce of fat on this movie--its 2 and half hours, and feels like 90 minutes. This was one of those movies, where if, when it ended, they immediately queued it up and started playing it again, no one would leave the theater--they'd' watched it again. Got a standing ovation at the end. The box office on this will be MASSIVE. I think the repeat viewings on this will rival the billion times that weepy teen chicks saw Titanic over and over. Seriously a movie you could watch every afternoon for a week straight... I do wish I could see it in IMAX. I may have to break my own "no dubbed movies" rule, just to go see it at the Budapest Arena IMAX. I cannot say enough good things about this flick. Whedon will get to do whatever the hell he wants, whenever he wants after this.
-
let's start with Star Wars 7, 8 and 9 Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill are still alive and ready to give it OAP snark while their kids blow stuff up....
-
I've liked Whedon for a long time, but after tonight, i fucking love him. The Avengers (Assemble!?!?) is truly a masterpiece of superhero cinema.
-
The movie was solid and immensely entertaining. but the editing around the death of Agent Coulson could have been handled better. When he got speared it truly upset me, but then it cuts back to the ginger bitch fighting fake bourne and winning, but ALL i wanted was to go back to Agent Coulson. They were his final moments and they were taken away from me! Treat the man with some fucking respect! R.I.P Coulson, I never realised how much you meant to me until tonight. ("Puny God" best moment, Hulk stole the show!)
-
Only my opinion here but I thought the way he framed shots and filmed certain action scenes were very T.V. Everything happening in frame was too close, a few times during fight scenes especially Thor and Loki atop Stark tower I had no idea who was hitting who and it seemed disoriented, he also liked to frame in a way that cut the tops of heads off and filled the foreground giving scenes a "small" feeling, this is a minor quibble as I really enjoyed the film but I think it needed a director with scope and not just for the action sequences
-
There was too much action happening along the vertical axis. Anamorphic format is fine for films that lend themselves to a horizontal plane of action, but when you're action movement is mainly up/down, then it's not as good.</p> </p> Also, I was relieved that they didn't shoehorn an "Avengers Assemble" line in there - it's the type of line that reads okay, but would come across forced and silly when spoken as dialogue.

It's simply remarkable filmmaking - so well balanced and paced, it just looks so effortless! *SPOILER*
by marineboy
I swear on my geeked out heart, that was the best experience I've had in the cinema for a loooong time. To not only have Harry Dean Stanton in the mix, but give us a smirking THANOS - I was really just taken aback. None of this was excessive either, it wasn't geeks masturbating, it was a story with characters everybody could enjoy. Using Thanos as such a massive surprise, it makes me think Marvel are really going to exploit their enormous character base. Films like the Inhumans and Guardians of the Galaxy are going to be made with the confidence that there is a market out there for lesser known characters to come through, primarily because good characterisation has universal appeal. Marvel are going to to be as massive and influential as Apple. They're going to realise everything we fanboys have known for years!

...THANOS smirking at the end is enough to keep me going :) It's a beautiful thing.

Blaming a photographer for the model. Directors deal with actors, Directors of Photography deal with shots. While the director does have final say/responsibility... It's not his department.

Saying that, I thought Avengers looked amazing, the action was very well choreographed, some of the best I've seen, in a summer blockbuster anyway

This will drop to 70-80% on Rotten Tomatoes once the embargo is lifted. Same thing happened to Thor, which was at 95% prior to its release. Everyone needs to take a cold shower and stop believing the hype. The main problem is there is NO credible threat established early on. The stakes aren't high enough. The worst that Loki ever does to establish his bad-assery is annoy some Opera goers. WTF? The camera work is all close-up and too kinetic, so it never feels epic like it should. It feels like there are only 2 scenes, despite this being over 2 hours long. Hulk has a change of character that is never explained. I think most people are just happy that it's not a complete mess like it could have been.
-
Not really much to add to what anyone else has said, except that it's a hell of a lot of fun. It will never win an oscar, and it had a ton of little flaws, but it was sincerely a blast. Audience cheering and clapping multiple times. Good/small nods to the other films. More comic fanboy moments than I could count. Pepper Potts barefoot in jean shorts and the gratuitous close up of Black Widow's ass in 3D deserve a mention. Whedon is a definite perve. A must see for 3D on the big screen. Most geek-fun I've had in the cinema since LOTR.

Just Fandango'd my tickets for next Sat. Can anyone tell me if Regal's RPX is going to be worth it?
by AlienFanatic
I've never seen a movie in an RPX theater so I don't know how it compares to IMAX.
-
If you've ever read anything Whedon has wrtten for Marvel, this film is literally a comic book put on the big screen. To non comic book readers that may seem like a silly statement, but for those of us that read comics, that's exactly what you're seeing. I bet the storyboards for this film could get inked, colored and word ballooned just as they stand and be a damn good read.

I saw this movie. It sucked! Was Ralph Fiennes supposed to be Iron Man??

and very camp. The fact that so many people seem to like the film in no way bodes well for how I would like it. If anything its a bad sign, most of you like crap.
-
Totally agree. As a story the film is almost utterly non-existent. It's lot of arbitrary elements spot-welded together to make a movie. To be fair to Whedon it's his character work that makes the film halfway decent. Unfortunately, his direction also makes it halfway forgettable.

@pubgrundy - there was a throwaway line that explained Thor's arrival
by Happyfat73
I think it was Loki mocking Thor that the Asgaardians had to basically pool all of the energy available to them to send him to earth to bring Loki to justice. Or something to that effect.
-
Thanks, glad I'm not the only one. I hate to be a detractor when everyone else seems to have a great time with a movie. I walked out of the first Transformers feeling the same way. Time and repeated viewings will show that this is a lesser comic book movie. Nothing has surpassed the original Iron Man in my opinion.
-
Loki had a line about "your father must have summoned a lot of his power to send you here." So it was addressed.
-
Again, I agree. I think what's most disappointing about The Avengers is that it delivers exactly what you expect and contains zero surprises. Yes, there's an iconic pop culture thrill to seeing the Hulk, Cap, Iron Man, Thor etc together, but...there just isn't enough meat on the bone.
-
when I say "nothing" I mean none of the Avengers series. "X-Men: First Class" showed that you can have an ensemble cast of superheroes, and still tell a great story. I agree that the dialogue was good, but felt that too much of it was played for laughs. I suspect that you're right about this being a series of stitched-together moments. My guess is the producers literally gave Whedon a checklist of elements that HAD to be included, eg. Iron Man vs Thor vs Cap vs Loki vs Hulk etc. Also, every character needed a line stitched in that recapped their back-story. After all of this there wasn't much time left to tell an Avengers story.
-
I was 13 when the six issue Infinity Gauntlet series was first published. I have kept them sealed, until now. I have to wait a week to see the Avengers, so I'm going to read these finally.
-
At one point Hulk was smashing up everyone and every thing indiscriminately, then later he was taking orders from Cap. What gives?

Grow a set and let Beaks publish his 10,000 word monster (incidentally, this was Hemingway's self-given nickname for his wang).

This movie has made me write my first blog at http://dirtyceasar.wordpress.com/2012/04/09/hello-world/ Would love to hear what people think... as for Joss being a perv. Sure, Gwynny in Daisy Dukes and Scarmadonna at the start are nice to look at. But Maria Hill is the superior officer that Jack was telling Tom about in A Few Good Men!
-
Again, I agree. The X-movies (certainly the Singer and Vaughan entries) do the ensemble thing incredibly well and manage to tell a coherent story in the process. Also, the film seemed to be over burdened with a bunch of elements it was introducing for future movies - the outer space threat angle, Fury's shadowy bosses, Maria Hill and the whole super-spy world of SHIELD. For me all of that just detracted from the Avengers themselves and who/what/why they were fighting.
-
I'm a fan of Marvel, from their comic books to their movie franchises, though with each movie they put out my expectations grow higher. I wasn't impressed with Iron Man 2, Captain America, and Thor just barely had my approval. But this movie, this shining achievement, is where all past mistakes are forgiven! The Avengers is a dream come true for Marvel fans. We got Captain America leading the squad, Robert Downey being cool as always as Iron Man, Hawkeye making more than just a cameo, Black Widow as sexy as ever, Thor being awesome, and of course...the Hulk...holy moly does Joss Whedon get the PERFECT tone for the Hulk! *Major Spoiler ahead* What I didn't appreciate was that they killed off Agent Coulson. I particularly enjoyed the humor he brought in the movies he was in. He was like the connective tissue between SHIELD and the The Avengers. I understand why he had to die, and even the movie clearly points it out, but damn, I hope they can resurrect him. The last half of the movie was pretty much owned by the Hulk. It was fantastic seeing all the Avengers kicking ass together as a team, but the greatest cheers in the audience came whenever the Hulk was doing his thing! From tearing up the jet, to giving Thor sucker punch, and completely OWNING Loki, Hulk has finally been fully realized and this version should be used from here on out. Putting Thanos at the end for a quick teaser was the perfect way to get our juices flowing for the sequel! *End Spoilers* Holy craaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaap. Now I can look forward to more great movies: Promethus, The Dark Knight Rises, and hopefully The Amazing Spiderman can rise up to the bar already set by The Avengers.
-
Joss is about to have one of the highest grossing films of all time. Might even reach the top 5, but sure the top 10.
-
...I like him and his work, but this movies financial success has very little to do with him. Two hours of the Avengers as played by sock puppets would still make a mint after the PR blitz Marvel/Disney has pulled on this sucker.
-
Saw it tonite at the ziegfeld in NYC, great great film. You get cool 3D character glasses, Lots of fun moments, my character run down Loki looks like he stepped out the comics with his grin Iron Man / Robert strongest on the screen, Scarlett is defintiely the weakest link, but she has great pout. Bad castiing call. Hulk has the best screen time, Ruffalo awesome. Thor was great, lots of lightning, great battle with iron man Cap America / Chris Evans hair annoyed me, looked like he stepped out of a Chanel Advertisement. Soldier needs to look a little rugged looking. Sam Jackson played Sam Jackson Jeremy Renner was good all around. Great film for the whole family.
-
I agree with the more restrained reviews. Great dialogue and characterisation -- this literally feels like all the characters from the comic book have come to life and they all have believable arcs and dimensionality. The visual effects and the final action climax are also breathtaking and are worth the price of the ticket alone. But as a narrative it's patchy and dodgy in many places. The film dawdles with too much arbitrary filler (the scene in Germany with Loki recovering that alloy is the definition of filler) and contains some pretty sloppy tropes (how do you cure Loki's possession? Just whack the person on the head!). It can also be argued that despite the fact that one of the major foundations of the plot is that the team is fractured and doesn't trust each other, they kinda behave a little bit *too* childishly and arrogantly. There's so much (potentially) at stake but everyone's standing around having a whinge. Thankfully, those whinges are really well written, but still. I'm also going to go against the grain here and say I think the film was *too* funny. All of the Stark stuff, flying monkeys etc. was great, but Hulk punching Thor, ragdolling Loki etc. felt like it was too silly. It works really well as a crowd-pleasing theatre moment, but I highly doubt those beats will stand up as well upon a home viewing.
-
The scene with them standing around and having a whinge and behaving badly was obviously set up as Loki manipulating their emotions/behaviour.
-
Yeah, actually I recall wondering that. The rotating shot that focused on his scepter where the camera revolved and put the team 'upside down' was clearly implying that, as did the moment where Banner was holding the scepter, but was it ever actually established that Loki could manipulate their emotions that way? Is this one his powers? It wasn't set up in Thor.
-
Just implied by the dutch angles and spinning camera, as well as Loki's nature as a trickster.
-
Frankly, I kinda consider that an equally weak point. If the villain has a power that can manipulate the emotions of the heroes, you kinda just want to lock that in. Having said that, I suppose focusing on the scepter goes a way in implying that the same force that controls Hawkeye's mind is somehow at play here, maybe in a diluted form. But that's still too shakey for me (and I'm not saying that I don't appreciate subtlety and ambiguity in cinema).

I'll take that under consideration next time I actually DO have a conversation with myself. We're not the same person. We just both thought the film was...somewhat less than the second coming of cinema.
-
There's a non stopping scene across New York focusing on each Avengers that is pure comic geekgasm! Hulk is the best of the movie!

Since I have far too many thoughts to post here, besides just saying it was spectacular, I give you my very long and overly complicated review presented both with and without spoilers...trust me, it makes sense. http://youtu.be/FnqJxbKrH5w

Yeah, Loki's powers seemed totally ill-defined and inconsistent. But then the relative power levels of the Avengers themselves seemed to fluctuate at will. Oh, well...
-
Went tos ee it yesterday, its a fantastic film , the best Marvel movie ever, and possibly the greatest superhero film so far.....
-
I thought the first half was okay. In am a huge Whedon fan, but found it too talky, too much exposition and not enough drama, even though it was very funny. 6/10. The second half though is the best superhero movie I have ever seen. Who could have thought Joss would be able to handle action so well? 9/10. Highlights: Black Widow, The Hulk and the last minute in space. Cap's costume sucks, though.
-
Thought was a great film, but why in shot in w/s seems unusual for a film of this size
-
I think the decision to shoot in 1.85 rather than 2.39 could be attributed to the amount of vertical action in the film. When the line of action moves largely in an up/down direction, anamorphic becomes impractical.
-
a) The link doesn't work. b) Is the misspelling of "Caesar" deliberate?

I sawthe movie twice, back to back. First with ny grand kids, then with my grown children. First time I can honestly say i had tears of joy through most of it. V emotional experience. Next, I savoured the details but still couldn't fault it. Thank you joss Whedon.

Many years ago when I finished reading the Ultimates, I just wondered myself, "Wow, so frakking cinematic, they will never make a actual movie out of this..." </p> Thanks, Marvel. You did it. The Helicarrier was DREAMY. The rest was also pretty good, heh. </p> Just joking. The last half hour...wow. Just, wow. WOWSOME. Best super heroes...no, best action scenes, in any media, ever. Including comics, anime, video games... </p> Coming up next. Kevin for Disney Movies Division President. Joss for UNCANNY X-MEN, WHEN Marvel gets back the license. And CAPTAIN AMERICA, AGENT OF SHIELD, directed by Brad Bird, co-starring the twin brother of...SON OF COUL! Against Strucker, Madame Viper and HYDRA! </p> Cheers.
-
I think they did a great job, when you think about what they had to do to get these characters toghether and saying and doing the right things that would be believeable in the marvel world. It could of easily fallen apart, and people would be like wtf. I was surprised at how much they nailed the comedy, I mean we have seen it before in iron man etc, but thats coz robert is great at it, but i think they did it so well in the Avengers, with the interactions between the different characters and of course the action but that speaks for itself.
-
Fanboys can make good movies when given the chance. I disagree with comments saying it was "childishly funny" - guys, it's source material is a comic book. Nuff said.

It just became a giant toy commercial. The setup was so awesome, just failed to deliver.

It sucked ten years ago and it still sucks!

I knew it would be like this. I rarely go to the cinema these days, preferring a home cinema setup with a 10 foot screen where I can watch a film in peace. But now and again a film comes along that you can't wait for and along to the multiplex you go. Why cinemas are dying on their arses 1.01 1 - 7 uk pounds per ticket (over 11 dollars) 2 - a 1.50 'handling fee' for booking online (to handle what exactly, nothing, that's what.) 3 - Over ten pounds for two reconstituted from syrup cokes and one carton of popcorn 4 - Fucking morons who arrive after the show begins 5 - Fucking morons who can't find their seat 6 - Fucking morons who decide to change seat during the film 7 - Fucking morons who can't hold their bladder for the length of a feature film 8 - Fucking morons texting and tweeting during the film 9 - Showing a film in fucking 16:9 with black bars down the side Three times during the film, someone got up and had to squeeze past us. Fortunately my partner was on hand to stop me making a scene but fuck's sake, how hard is it to turn up on time, find a seat, stay in it, shut the fuck up and turn your phone off? The Vue chain in the Uk stinks and will be getting a steaming email from me today. Trailers - no DKR as hoped for. Prometheus - loud as fuck, Dictator - dire, American Pie The Reunion - equally dire and some shite with Jason Statham, all shown in a window not filling the screen. Then onto Avengers Assemble, as it's cretinously called over here in the UK cos we might think it's about some fat old boy with an umbrella.. My heart sank. Surely this film was NOT made in 16:9. Can anyone confirm? Vue showed it on a 2.35.1 screen with black bars down the sides in 16:9. No wonder the room was less than half full. The film itself? Fantastic. I read my first Avengers comic 40 years ago, aged 10 and never thought I would see something so... right. It stomps along and while there's always something we'd like to be different, it's pretty much bang on. Hawkeye is poor but Black Widow is given much more to do. The fight scenes are geek heaven, Iron Man v Thor, Thor v The Hulk are the stuff damp patches in trousers are made of. Mark Ruffalo owns as Banner and he should push to play him in the tv adaptation, and when he becomes The Hulk, the green chappie has never looked better. the second time he transforms I got shivers down the spine and it's fair to say The Hulk, for me, had the best moments in the film. That second transformation, literally wiping the floor with Loki in a scene that stole the entire movie, and his tear up with Thor. Iron Man and Cap are great and no-one gets to outshine anyone else. The question the film raises is, though, how the hell do you follow it? I find myself curiously unexcited at the thought of another slew of Cap, Thor and Iron Man solo ventures, I want them all back together again, the bickering, the banter and the action. The bar has been set to a new height for superhero movies and Joss Wheddon should be carried aloft through the streets on the shoulders of comic fans the world over. Fantastic movie, you must go see it. But not at The Vue.
-
Saw it yesterday in IMAX 3D, and it was awesome. Seriously, this movie delivers the goods. Pretty much everything a fan could realistically want from an Avengers movie is in here. There are moments when you'll cheer out loud at what's up there on the screen. The representation of the characters is faithfully carried over from their respective individual movies, so if you liked how the characters were portrayed and interpreted in those, you'll accordingly like how they're handled here. And the fights and action set pieces are suitably jaw dropping. And the "coda" for this movie features a cameo from a certain Marvel villain which certainly bodes well for the sequel.
-
Turns out, these were only practice runs for Whedon's masterpiece. The Avengers is utterly brilliant. And as we're not worried here about spoilers (warning)... Caulson's death really shook me up, much like Wash's in Serenity. Is this a Joss thing now? He has to kill off a fan favourite every time? Still, what a wonderful movie!!
-
1. Iron Man. 2. Thor. 3. Iron Man 2. 4. Captain America. 5. The Avengers.

(+) The direction is first rate for this kind of picture. Given the epic destruction that goes down throughout the last half, and boy is it epic, Whedon's helming is incredibly coherent, visually pleasing, spatially correct and the man even throws in a bunch of visceral pov shots. The protagonists are such an awesome bunch together. I was concerned that this movie was going to implode due to superhero overdose, but this gang, working together, was unbelievably cool and each one really gets his or her moments in the spotlight. Their banter together is frequently engaging, but there are moments of earnestness among them also. I'm really a convert as per this kind of premise and I started fantasizing about the likes of Blade and Ghost Rider added to the sequel. Which is never going to happen and would be shit anyway, but this is arguably the first time that a comic book movie has really unleashed the inner geek inside of me. What a motherfucking team we've got here. In fact, I think it would be a privilege to be able to see these guys simply go out and order pizza, get drunk and just doing regular things that regular folks do. They were fun together, the chemistry was undeniable. The Humour was exactly right. Not overbearing so that it tips the balance in favor of sheer comedy, nor out of character so that we're left wondering where the hell that came from. Audiences in Belgium rarely cheer and clap hands, but Hulk has two moments, that, well, I'm not gonna say it. They're like 1,2 seconds long, but they're pitch perfect, gutbustingly funny, entirely spontaneous and yet completely logical when you think about him and his proclivities. Totally goddamn hilarious! The FX were, given the complexity of it all, fantastic. (+)/(-) The villains were good enough I suppose. Hiddleston is clearly relishing every moment, and the alien invaders (espesh the big snake) are visually immense, massive, imposing, but despite the calamitous nature of the last half, I can't say I was ever truly on the edge of my seat as per the possible outcome. Speaking strictly in terms of the invasion angle, ID4 and even Skyline both offered a more formidable threat, a more persuasive sense of menace and of humanity being crushed, being exterminated. Still, not everyone lives to fight another day in The Avengers (sniff!) so there's definitely a sense of loss in this. The Music was decent, but oh Alan what happened to you? There was a time when themes were clearly discernible amongst your output. The great Forrest Gump suite, the gloriously patriotic score for The Delta Force, your iconic theme for Back to the Future, but even the lesser likes of Eraser and Blown Away had a melodic rhythm to them, qualities that were undeniable even during the more action heavy moments. The Avengers might have done well with a rousing main theme - think Jablonsky's "Arrival to Earth" for Transformers - but alas your score was merely apt, propelling the action. The Story was ok. There were definitely more personal issues at stake, but I've gotta say in the end this plays out as a standard invasion flick and whatever deeper themes there may have been, they're not what I ultimately remember from this. Still, like I said above, it's a great looking flick and within those narrative confines, The Avengers gets a lot mileage thanks to the direction, the cast, the writing, the kickass action scenes. Iron Man has a great moment at the end that was really fantastic to watch. Some randomness was still there such as the 1st appearance of Thor which was odd since there was no portal anywhere when he popped up. But then I figured he never went back to Asgard, but then how was he summoned during that sequence? There's a small sequence a little after the end credits have started that clearly sets up a new Avengers flick by introducing what must obviously be an important character, but I had never heard of him. If you want to know who it is, just ask. (-) N/A ================== In the end, this is an easy •••½ rating for me. It really just oozes tremendous fun from start to finish and those 144 minutes pass rather quickly. It turns these heroes into absolute badasses, far more than they ever were in their own movies and seeing them do their stuff, working together, in spite of their egos, towards a common goal was exhilarating. Final note: Stellan Skarsgård was in this. Last week I saw his son Alexander in Battleship. I fully expect to see Ma Skarsgård in American Reunion which is probably the next flick I'm gonna watch.
-
Just seen The Avengers yesterday in good ol' Blighty and must say believe the hype people! Whedon "Smashed It" The balance of characters is perfect the levels of action and humour are outstanding. This is what everyone hoped and prayed the film to be!!!! Outstanding! Brilliant! Awesome! Totally think Mark Ruffalo's portrayal of Banner is the best yet! My only criticism would be I didn't want it to end! The way each of the characters bounced off of each other was outstanding the beat downs were carried out perfectly! Ruffalo Smash!
-
Best Marvel film yet, and best of the year so far. Whedon has made a miracle!
-
Having just checked I find that Avengers Assemble was shot in 1.85:1. Good grief.
-
This film is a whole lot of fun. Only pedants could claim to write that their movie experience was spoiled in some way by the flimsy plot moments. And there are moments of very contrived plotting that are, perhaps, required for the sake of running time and budget: Natalie Portman stars as a…photo (which fares poorly in comparison to Pepper Pott’s featured cameo); Thor returns to Earth and all we get is a flip explanation, Hulk’s change from marauding destruction monster on the helicarrier to focused team player in Manhattan occurs with one flip line. There are so many pluses: Scarlett Jo is genuinely good as Black Widow, who feels like a real character. The death of Coulson was brilliantly judged, drawing both the audience in emotionally and binding the Avengers together, Chris Evans seemed better in this as Cap than he did in the movie – the ‘man out of time’ schtick was really quite effective and this film was more than a handful of ‘gasp!’ moments. In fact, I can’t remember the last time I was in a cinema in London (oftentimes the capital city for hipster snark0 and the audience cheered on a number of occasions!! A joyous experience for a comic book fan like me and my girlfriend loved the film too, having seen none of the other Marvel movies and not being as geek in any way.
-
I saw the movie in Italy, on the night of 24/04 in a pre-screening night. What can be said? The 5 movies needed to get to this jewel were the best appetizer we could get, to have the opportunity to feast on this banquet. I loved everthing, except the fact that nobody yells:Avengers Assemble! Too bad... I really belive that even the worst detractors can't keep their attitude after having seen this 2 plus hours of superhero heaven. I would have put a little more Steve Rogers in it, but everything is pure bliss anyway. Thank you Marvel for making an old time fan like me water his eyes out of joy.
-
This film's word of mouth alone will get so many repeat viewings it won't be funny. I'm going again asap! I love the Thor/Hulk fight, both pounding on each other. Note - Thor smiling during the fight as he's found a worthy opponent. I can guarantee Thor will get his revenge on Hulk in the next one, and in the 3rd they'll probably punch each other out at the same time. So much stuff in it. It's hard to put it all into words. But these will do... HULK..SMASH!!!!! P.S With Thanos on deck, $$$$ have to be spent on getting the Silver Surfer character license back to Marvel/Disney as Thanos/Thor/Silver Surfer appear so much together in each others comics.
-
1. Iron Man 2. Thor 3. The Incredible Hulk 4. The Avengers 5. Captain America 6. Iron Man 2
-
Try again.. can anyone find out WHY the North American market is getting a ton of movies a week or so later than overseas markets these days? It used to be the other way round.
-
I thought the pace of the first half was spot on, given what it had to do with the re-introduction of so many characters. The second half though, wow, that was fantastic. I also love that they gave Hulk possibly the two biggest laughs in the film - his smackdown with Loki and the punching of Thor just after the giant serpent went down. Yeah, I'll go see it again, might even try 3D this time, I saw a quite a few things in there that would look great if the 3D is done well.
-
...the 144 minutes flew by, great direction - camera work is genius particularly the seamless flow as it captures the action character-to-character, epic. The humour could've been toned down, it is the end of the world after all and one wise craack after another is okay for a while but it prevents the film from building up real concern and tension because the humour depletes it of the seriousness it needs to inflate my eyes and prick my ears, this is DEFINITELY NOT A THRILLER, not like Superman 2 or even Spiderman 2, where the menace of the villan(s) are felt and their evil intentions build layer upon layer of mystery and foreboding intensity. The story is by far the weakest element in this film, this is in part due to the equal prominence of the characters sharing the same screen for 144 minutes and Weadon's melting pot is stirred perhaps far too many times to accomodate the superheroes personas, rather than focusing on the main story arc, which tends to get diluted or to put it more accurately, contaminated with individual superhero issues and comedic banter. It would've been more engaging for me if the story drove the dialogue, instead the story was far too simple - an mind-numbing invasion typically nothing different to any other sci-fi invasion flick - and this bored me to tears. Why? Because the complexity of characters on show here, desserved a far more complex and rich story and a plot with decent realistic twists. What I got instead was more CGI thrown on the screen than necessary, rich characters with rich backgrounds and personalities I cared about, which in the end amounted to very little concern for what would happen to them. Not once did I feel any of the avengers were ever threatened, however, there is one tragedy that did bring a tear to the eye and it was good, but it's as though Weadon had a list check boxes he was ticking off. Also, the film features very little of the public, hardly ever do I sense people of the planet or even NYC are in great danger. This is not like the first two Superman films where Donner actively went out of his way to ensure the street sounds and colours of the general public of metropolise were heavily scipted and featured with prominence in his films. Avengers suffers from the same lack of public awareness that other modern superhero films suffer with; there are simply no people anywhere. Sure, in the end peopel are seen screaming and running for their lives, but there are no street sounds like traffic, NYPDs stopping for donuts, car horns, people talking, remember how the fruit stall man in superman? Well, you get nothing like that here. And this just makes the film into a cartoon IMHO, I can't engage with it as I am a normal person in the street. FInally, many of you who are avid comic book film fans will immediately notice how Weadon takes scenes from other comic book films and slots them into Avengers. I'm not sure whether this was done as a homage or to pay respect to far more superior films that came before this, but I think it's lazy to incorporate scenes from other far more superior stories. I mean Superman Returns failed because it took what a previously made superior product and rehashed it, and this is essentially what Avengers is doing but it thinks it's doing it in a smarter post-modernistic way, unfortunately it's not, it is obvious to me and countless others who will watch this film and not notice these things upon first viewing but will undoubtedly pick up on it on any number of re-watches. Depondency will setin after you realise the story was weak as was the tension all in favour of rich characterisation and dialogue that depleted the film of being a true thriller, but then again this is disney so if you're looking for a superhero flick that has a worhty plot and complex story arc I'm afraid this is not it, superman 1& 2 and spiderman 2 this is not and I doubt any film will ever come close to those superior products.

Can't wait for this to come out next week. Did someone say that Joss Whedon wasn't a good director??? You would have to have been without a TV for the past 20 years to think that.. My only hope is that with this success, he won't have to worry about another series like Firefly or Dollhouse getting pulled out from under him. The man is a freaking genius. The only downside.. Since he has Avengers, it's doubtful that DC could ever get him for Justice League which I would just love to see. Did anyone catch the cameo by Enver Gjokaj, wish he could have had a bigger part than a cameo. That guy has a ton of freaking range as an actor!! JT

Thor's return to earth. I'm not sure i'm entirely satisfied by the explanation. There isn't one really. But for a question Loki poses as to how much dark magic Odin might have conjured to send him back, Thor doesn't actually answer anything. I'm thinking a scene was shot and cut out. Don't get me wrong, I love his arrival. Yet I think they should address it as it kind of undermines the whole finale of Thor's own film. Jane desperately searching for him. Thor's sacrifice of the biofrost to save the Frost giants. Thoughts anyone? Plus I want to see a scene where he flies off to see Jane. And Disney to buy F4 rights back off Rothman and co ASAP.

Did anyone else think the 'framing' was off on a lot of shots? Eyelines too far up the screen.

Was distracting during the early scenes and very odd considering the DP. Or was this just an Imax issue?

This move fucking ROCKED! Best superhero movie ever! Whedon you are a genius. Hulk moments were laugh out loud funny. Great dialogue and thought each character got there story across brilliantly!

by David Cloverfield
There was a scene that maded me laugh, with Iron Man catching the Nuke, we get a glimpse of the Brooklyn Bridge, which has cars going in and out of Manhattan in a casual pace. There's a wormhole over the city, spewing Alien warriors that kill everything on sight, and people are commuting towards it.
-
Great movie saw it Imax style last night (British audience actually whooped and hollard!) ,but the music is useless. That and Caps' costume are the only gripes i have. Great fun, will be seeing it again.

Whining =/= a complex story. I like both movies, but come on. Especially Superman 2. There's no real reason to give up his powers, there's no real resoltuion, and Supes doesn't learn a goddamn thing (or worse, he learns to become a thug). Or spider-man 2, which tells you: it's okay to give up your responsibilities, unless you are in love, in which case get that costume back and save your girlfriend. They are not really well thought out movies.

A phenomenal achievement, to juggle so many characters so effectively. Will be viewing for a second time very soon. Hope it makes a fortune so they can fast track the next one. Assemble!

david cloverfield I think you greatly underestimate the complexity of Superman 2 and Spiderman2...
by AllThosePowers
...Superman 2 - Zod and his crew were out to seek revenge against Jor-El's eire - all of this against the backdrop of his love for Lane for which he was willing to sacrifice his powers for, and that notion that love make you blind is testament to the fact that Kent knew sweet FA about what was heppening in the world because he was in lala land, i.e., in love. But upon viewing the news bulletin in the cafe where he got his arse kicked the sudden realisation that he's a being who cannot take his foot of the peddle for a second, not even for something as enriching as love and to do so has dire consequences for the world, is a great story arc. Something Avengers does not have. Also, kneel before Zod is a classic scene and any film that tries to emulate it is pathetic in comparison. Now to Spiderman2 - dr. octopus was Parker's mentor, who in the end realises the wrongs of his ways and saves NYC from destruction. Mary Jane's capture fires up Parker with a a determination that all viewers can relate to. What the fuck was Avengers great determination - to close a fucking porthole? Avengers is lame when compared to Spiderman2 and Superman 2, FACT!

I still thought "Phil" was going to show up at the end all better! For something of an incidental character with no comics history Coulsen's demise was very sad.
-
I was quite sad they killed him and I thought he was going to show up at the end alive but alas Coulson may well be dead.

Haven't enjoyed a blockbuster this much since I can't remember when! Too much cool stuff to mention but the HULK/Loki smackdown and Stark doning the MK VII suit in midair were outstanding! The bar has been raised! Nuff Said!

You honestly think that the combo of Disney, Marvel, Paramount and Whedon makes critics feel pressured to write a good review? Since when do the critics have any concern about what Hollywood thinks? Pixar received bad reviews for "Cars 2", Marvel didn't get much praise for Iron Man 2, and Paramount (along with Lucas and Speilberg) we're ripped new ones for Indiana Jones 4. Some critics LOVE the attention that a negative review brings them. They are not afraid to write one. This is NOT a conspiracy. I think it is WAY more likely that the critics actually enjoyed themselves at the screenings. You may have to face the fact that your opinion is in the minority. No big deal. It happens.

AVENGERS REVIEW: finally its here the second most anticipated comic movie of the year, well of course after “the dark knight rises”. first of all forgive me if I nearly write it all small, I`m lazy when it comes to use of capital small/ big initial letters and second I live in germany so if my grammar isnt always on track be nice, but I try my best to make it work. man I tried not to die for almost 5 years since I heared marvel is going to do “the avengers” film and they did start with a great “iron man” movie and its been a long road since then isnt it. the first “iron man” had it all in a comic movie universe wise, it was pure fun and had the resurrection of robert downey jr. this was a one man show and a great one. sadly the second movie even with a good cast was a disaster. “the incredible hulk” gave us the best “hulk” movie yet and I`m still pissed edward norton isnt in the avengers. “thor” was surprisingly good thanks to the likes of kenneth branagh. even though I`m still pretty unimpressed with the end fight or better said the last third of the film. about “captain america…I know the reaction of fans here at aint it cool news were mixed, one half loved that flick and the other half not, you can count me in the other half. I really hoped for the best but cap didn’t deliver it for me. in my opinion they should have made the cap movie more like the “ultimate avengers” animated movie, less cap alone, more in the avengers initiative. In the end i think its the weakest movie with “iron man 2”. Its like I knew it right away I wasn’t even in the cinema to see cap, the trailer didn’t work for me, same goes to “green lantern” which was the worst superhero movie since well “catwoman” with halle berry. sometimes I smell a bomb miles away…but I will not compare dc with marvel, I wont…i dont know maybe i`m not cool with chris evans playing cap? I mean after hearing jensen ackles was up for the role i was fire and flames, cus i love this dude. he is “supernatural” and i know some peole think he is a bad actor those people should watch one season of supernatural. I mean he can play drama, be badass or can be silly. yet again I also heared john krasinski was also up to play cap, so I`m ok with chris, cus john looks like goofy. I could have never taken this guy seriously. now lets get to the good and bad. the movie: its fun, entertaining like the first “iron man” but only when robert downey is in the scene, except two moments belong to hulk, watch the thor & loki scenes, brilliant! the whole movie looks more like a iron man and friends film, the first and the second third are pretty… well lets say it nice “weak”. the best part in those thirds were the iron man vs thor vs cap fight and I mean I´m a sucker for scarlets body & face but I really don’t need to see her that much in a superhero movie doing all buffy again. thor and hulk were pretty wasted in the movie and captain america is too well, serious. hawkeye is doing his “mi4” performance again and nick fury, come on is there really a nick fury fan outthere? loki wasn’t a surprise I think tom hiddleston did a hell of a job being the bad guy in “thor” and in “avengers” in my opinion the only actor who was acting seriously in a superhero movie. the last third is worth all the money you will spend on this flick its like superhero mayhem its like a mix of “transformers – dark of the moon” ( the last act) and “x-men 3” (the last act) well that written I know something stinks right? but come on what did you expect “the dark knight” wrong director, wrong writer, wrong movie. “the avengers” isnt the mother of superhero movies, its more like “transformers” with real people. they fight, break stuff and make jokes. there were moments I really thought michael bay had done the movie and not joss whedon. in the end the movie is good for what it is, not brilliant but I didn’t expect it to be “the dark knight”. In the end it will make a lots of money so we will see another part. directing: after i heared joss whedon is going to direct i cheered for about some seconds, cus yeah i`m one of those buffy/angel heads but not a blind believer. not everything the man did was magic, art or something like that. I think he did some great episodes in buffy with stuff like “the body”, “hush” and “once more with feeling” and i liked the “serentiy” movie. well directing wise its not much for a belt isnt it? we know he is a good writer, well…about the avengers maybe some of you will find those pure whedon moments, I couldn’t. I mean this movie could have been done by jon favreau, michael bay or louis leterrier and anyone who says he sees the difference must be a greater movie fan or critic than me. I couldn’t see a trade mark or a special handwriting. I wont spoil anything cus many of you allready expect someone important to die...well is it that necessary in the first avengers movie? if its not iron man or cap, its not a surprise, why even bother? direcing wise I didn’t see joss anywhere I was pretty disappointed. the acting: there were moments I really didn’t need thor, hulk or cap…damn it was all the way robert downey who made me want to see another “iron man” film but a good one. like I said it’s a one man show again for robert, but on the other side there is tom hiddleston he is perfect as loki. the rest is doing auto pilot superhero roles. the effects: I`m grateful that we live in times were flying and shoting laser beams look so real, here again they did a fantastic job with the iron man suit and the hulk transformation etc but I know I will be one of the few who likes “the incredible hulk” more than this “avengers” hulk. the aliens look cool and if hulk is doing the goods it looks smashing. in the end its cgi porn mayhem like a bay movie. the 3d. its not worth the price, I had a feeling like only 10 % of the movie was in 3d and honestly I don’t get it, I don’t need this kind of 3d. still til this date “avatar” was the only movie worth the 3d. the writing: the story… its not innovated, in the end its not shakespeare, it has a lot of oneliners. the score: pretty dissapointing score by mister silvestri, sadly. here is my current top 10 comic movie ranking, without separating pure superhero comic movies or graphic novel adaptations, I mean if they have costumes, masks or make up on or wont die even if they`ve been shot a million times, they must be super, “heroes” or at least something like that right?!;) 1. the dark knight 2. v for vendetta 3. spiderman 2 4. batman begins 5. iron man 6. x-men 2 & x-men first class 7. the crow 8. sin city 9. avengers 10. superman the movie (cant help it, i was a child when i saw it first, still love it) well at least we still have “the dark knight rises” to show hollywood how to make brilliant superhero movies...they drew first blood, arc engel out. ps: wait til the credits end…you know why and I know you will!;)

So awesome. There wasn't one line, or one quip that didn't work. There were dialogue-heavy parts, or bits with a lot of exposition, but it never felt flabby or pointless. The writing was razor sharp, so absolute kudos to Whedon for that. Im actually surprised how well the action set pieces were done. You'll be sat there looking at the screen...just...SMILING. In our screening of a couple hundred people, not ONE person left for a bathroom break, you could just feel the entire cinema having a great time. Absolutely perfect summer superhero movie. This is gonna do gangbusters at the Box Office, you can feel it. Not least cos everyones gonna want to see it again. Simply brilliant.

Sorry if it's been asked before. Most of my theaters are currently only offering tickets for those showings. I don't mind paying almost 20 bucks if it adds to the movie, but if it doesn't, I'll wait.

Wow...10 out of 10 stars. This is the type of superhero ensemble movie that I've been dreaming of since I was a kid. Amazing and Spectacular. Marvel needs to sign up Josh Whedon to 4 or 5 picture deal that will let him adapt storylines from the comics to the big screen. The best parts of the movie : - Cap and Iron Man taking down Loki in Germany. - Thor vs Iron Man slugfest in the woods. - The Iron Man suit shooting out of Stark Tower to "merge" with a falling Tony Stark from the building. Amazing scene. - All of the Hulk scenes... Mark Ruffalo is amazing in this movie. Best interpretation of Hulk yet. - Iron Man walking towards Stark Tower and "disassembles" his suit to reveal Tony Stark... very very good. - Captain America giving orders to the rest of the team on how to defeat the Chitauri... very reminscent of the comics... - Hulk slapping Loki on the floor like a human pillow .. Hilarious. - Thor wielding his hammer in circular motion... just like in the comics... wow - Jeremy Renner's portrayal of Hawkeye - the Boba Fett of the movie.. I want an Avengers sequel soon!
-
would they make the point with the cards ? Surely he would just have shown them the cards with Couldson's blood on it and that was that ?
-
Nope. He bought the farm.

Hollywood movies run seldom with packed houses... and morning shows even less so. But Avengers... I went for the first day, first show and it was FULL. Last time this happened was for Dark Knight back in '08. Avengers is gonna make shittons of money here and it totally deserves it. And it also deserves more than a single watch. So happy for Whedon, who I hope returns for the sequel because I can't see anyone better to take on these characters!

Myself and 8 of my colleagues from mangaUK and AnchorBayUK saw the movie in 3D last night at the Apollo Cinema, Piccadilly. We wanted to see it in 2D, but we could not find a single theatre in the West End offering it in this format. That said, I was struck by how bright and punchy the 3D picture was compared to Thor and Clash of the Titans. This is a post 3D job, but Whedon and co obviously knew what they were doing when they lit their sets. So, ignore the naysayers and see this movie in 3D and a Sony True(!) 3D screen. It works. This movie is relentless; relentlessly funny and relentless exciting. I have loved all of the MArvel films to date, but still rate the Dark Knight as the pinnacle of comic book movie adaptations to date. TDK is a completely different movie to The Avengers, so it is unfair to comapre them, but I have to put above TDK. The Avengers does everything you had hoped this ultimate hero mash up would do and then dials it up to eleven. I cannot praise this movie enough. It was absolutely superb. The Hulk does get all the best lines. Downey Jnr. shares the screen with his co-stars and really fits in well with the larger group. The Black Widow gets a lot more screen time and I really enjoyed every scene she was in. The baddie alien dudes are a little bit Power Rangers, but they serve their purpose well. I'd give it 8 our of 9 Anchor Bay employees.
-
Through the city which took in every individual Avenger battle was just incredible. Simply put, the most fun I've had in years and my favourite comic book movie by some distance. This film shouldn't even exist, it is the stuff of childhood fantasy and yet I found myself watching Cap, Stark, Thor, Hulk, Widow and Hawkeye unloading on aliens. Delighted with the outcome. That Soundgarden song is one of the worst things I've heard in years though.

Haha same experience as me! UK VUE also Enjoyed the film didnt think it was a masterpeice though. On my way home I was thinking "I payed £11.75 to see this and when its out on blu only a few moths I could own it for less " Movie industry wants cinema to survive they come up with the fucking 3D gimmick (and soon jackeron 49p 3d gimmick at a premium price) The real problems High ticket prices (you have to pay extra for your glasses at the Odeon also!) High food prices (yeah I know this is only where the Cinemas make their profit) 20-35 minutes of brain numbing adverts BEFORE the trailers (seriously! A near 3 hour film with THAT many ads??) 3D doesnt really work and tiresome (and does not help when your local cinema has those annoying small lights above causing glare on the glasses ruining your view) Comfort out of the window Average size screen (as mutliplexes usually do) Too many fucking remakes/sequels Im 36 years old and used to enjoy going to cinemas for the experience but damn its gone down the pan. Heck I used to travel 52 miles to go to the Marble arch Odeon many years back as it had a HUGE screen (£4.50 a ticket) now its all replaced by piddly ones. And its all down to GREED by hollywood. Cinemas deserve to die and hollywood needs a cut back. Oh and now were getting VUE+ which will have 4k screens and awesome sound...all at extra cost on ticket buyers of course! Sometimes we just want to go to see a film in a theatre at a reasonable price without having to wear uncomfortable glasses staring a tv screen. Maybe im just fucking getting old!

@wildphantom07 - Thor's return throw off line of "how much dark powers did Odin use to bring you back to earth..." is in the Whedonverse basically a lead in for another story. Always pay attention to the throw away lines in Joss Whedon's work because there are none, they're usually a set up for something later on down the road. In this case I'd have to guess "Enchantress" or it's an allusion to "Thanos" mythos - either way we'll see Odin making a deal with someone like that to get Thor back, and having to deal with the ramifications of it later. AllthosePowers - you didn't like the movie. Fine there are people out there who don't like StarWars, Avatar, etc., we call these people a "minority" because they're are very few of them. The majority of people like the movie. I generally find that people who have to find fault with films the general populace enjoy are looking for faults so they can stand out and be different - and generally their opinions would make very poor improvements to the film and ruin what others enjoy in it. As a result it devalues their opinion so it's meaningless. Consider providing a meaningful critique instead of pulling arguments which, frankly are a reach, just to prove your view point. Or alternatively settle with, "I didn't like it." and let the rest of us go back to enjoying it.

Still laughing over anyone thinking Supes 2 or Spiderman 2 were well written with plots...
by M. November
Sorry... but ... man, what kind of crack were you on? Superman 2 was a bunch of eye rolling cartoon dialog that fit better on an episode of Dragonball Z than a movie screen!! LOL... Come on dude that's where we get the meme "Kneel before me!" which is soooo over the top it's become it's own thing! If they chewed any more curtain on the acting they'd have died of fiber poisoning. As for Spiderman 2 the best part of that story was seeing Bruce Campbell's walk on... the rest was ok, just not a real improvement over the first film, with very predictable very 1 dimensional plots which is what you expect of a sequel - and nothing against that. The films were what they were - the Superman films were meant to be campy, that's why we love them. But never use them in an argument about plot ... lol. Dude, that's like comparing a big wheel to a harley davidson, both are 'bikes' but ones just a might bit different than the other. LOL!!!!

(Saw it in 3D) I am a a huge fan the the original two runs of the Ultimate Avengers comic. This movie never had a chance of reaching that level of awesome. But two notches below that, still equals great entertainment. Great action, great everything. Kick-ass effects. No Spoilers. And The Hulk will definitely get a third try, starring Mark Ruffalo. Great character moments between him and Thor. My biggest mistake was thinking that Black Widow was a boring character and would have nothing to do, but exist as eyecandy the whole movie.. Wrong. Scarlett is excellent in this picture. Ditto goes for the rest of the cast. The Directors Cut will be awesome! Ps. McTiernan to direct Expendables 3!
-
Don't know if anyone's mentioned this yet (on this or any of the dozens of other Avengers talkbacks) : given the amount of negative reactions to Captain America's costume in the film, there is actually a scene where Agent Coulson says he had a hand in the design of it. Shortly afterwards, he is killed. I'm not saying that this is in any way depicted as comeuppance for the pointless suit redesign to appease angry Captain America fans, but you could look at it that way if it made you feel better.
-
Than Ironman 1 and 2 combined!!!! And here is my new list of fav comic movies, if anyone truly gives a fuck. 1 Superman the movie/ Superman II (One epic story in my book. The most entertaining film I have seen in years, full cast was awesome, Ruffalo & "the other guy" stole the show for me. So, when is the Bluray release then?
-
It shows you do not have to be po faced and gritty to make heroes work, it can have the ultimate thrills and spills and still have fun doing it.
-
I also believe there was probably a scene regarding his return from Asgard. But I doubt it had Anthony Hopkins, Idris Elba & Co, simply because they get "3 picture" deals and even a 10 second cameo counts as one picture... I can't see them wasting it really. It may not have been visually satisfying, but the return worked just fine when you take that sequence as a whole. Thor simply comes to Earth on a one way trip. He either captures Loki and recovers the cube, or he s stuck on Earth for a long, long time. (Until humans develop the means of travel to Asgard / or Asgardians can get the BiFrost back. They used something big (Infinity Gauntet perhaps? (Dark magic whatever that is in the MCU) to get Thor to Earth and it is made clear that the Cube is the only way they will get home. That's also partly why he had no time to fly off to Jane Foster. He had to get Loki and the Cube back to Asgard straight away. Brilliant film, cannot wait for more from the McU

I spent a lot of the time checking out Black Widows butt.. Will definitely see this film again over the weekend!

I saw it yesterday, had lots of fun. However many fillers and somewhat cheesy humor. Some moments me cringe, others cheer. It needs repeated viewings for better understanding. quite the long film really
-
Very much looking forward to it. Love it when haters have to bend over and take a dry pounding from both ends.
-
was not bad at all for a conversion, one of the finer 3d experiences. although I can't wait to see what 48 fps/ 4k will do with 3d.
-
I did think they'd be a bit more banter between them both seeing as Howard Stark was bumchums with Rogers in the past - thought he would have said a bit more such as "act like your father" or some crap, I don't know I don't write films, I just watch them..
-
Can't be 'original' AND 'derivative'. Haven't seen it yet but it seems like pretty dumb fun which is fine. I've enjoyed the lead-up movies quite a bit so I'm sure I'll enjoy this. Was a little apprehensive about Whedon...even in his comics he writes every character like a Buffy character...But he seems to have nailed it pretty well from what people are saying. Not nearly as excited about this as I am DARK KNIGHT RISES but still can't wait to see it.

Stay strong, briother. It's OKAY to not be a fan of something every other nerd seems to be tenting their pants over. It's okay. To everyone else: Allow the kid his opinion. Jesus.

I live in Sweden and just got back. It was badass and lives to the hype. Back home in the US have to wait an extra week. Haha...suckers! We get the new Batman and Promethus a week earlier too. Reason 29 that I was lucky to leave the states. 1) I don't really think Agent Coulson is really dead. 2)Thanos at the end is sweet. 3)Not sure, but I heard there were hints for Iron Man 3 in this movie, but couldn't find them. 4)Hulk stole the show in my opinion. "Puny god!" 5)No Kree or Skrull hinted in here. 6)Black Panther or Vision should be the new Avengers that maybe coming next round.
-
It breaks the cardinal rule of plotting by having characters undertake critical, conflict-driving events WITHOUT MOTIVATION. There's absolutely no reason for Superman to give up his powers. None. He has absolutely no motivation for doing so. Lois Lane isn't interested in Clark Kent. That's pretty firmly established in both films. Lois Lane loves *Superman*. So Superman can't give up his powers for Lois Lane's love. Sorry. The writer has him give up his powers for artificial conflict and to create a way to take Superman out of the action long enough for Zod to take over. It's a contrivance. It works on first viewing, but not if you stop and think about it for any length of time.
-
I'm surprised there isn't a review from any of the AICN staff yet?! Anyway saw it in the UK last night and thought it was incredible. best marvel film by far. I posted my thoughts here: - http://www.moviepush.co.uk/2012/04/avengers-movie-review-avengers-assemble.html

I always thought that was assumed. The cut scene in the directors version had the real reason Clark left Smallville (you guessed it, dead hooker).

First off let me say this movie blew my mind, Joss wedon is the fucking man. I thought with all the actors in this movie it was going to be an unbalanced pile of crap. Boy was i wrong to me this movie is by far the best marvel movie out there, even better than xmen first class. Its a fanboys wet dream, they nailed all the little things about each superhero and how they interact with each other. Loki reminds me of yes iam going to say it Heath ledgers Joker especially when SPOILER ALERT He is being interrogated by the black widow it reminded me of the silence of the lambs. and to realize Loki all along is not the main threat but it was lets just say stay till the middle of the credits to see who was pulling the strings the theatre went wild when they saw who the true villian was it was fucking epic. The hulk vs Thor battle was true to comic book lore just try to pick up that hammer fucking sweetness.
-
Just saw it, best comic book movie so far, hands down. A question, not sure if it's been addressed, all the "Phase 2" stuff in the first 15 minutes, what was that about? I'm thinking it's leaving the door open for new Avengers in the next film. Wasp or Scarlett Witch replacing Black Widow perhaps?

yes it was addressed and shown in the movie dont want to ruin for everyone else who didnt see it but it had to do with stark and banner and what were they searching for when they first got on board with fury. Also it has to do with what cap found out within shield
-
Loved every minute. Surpassed the hype of all the glowing reviews, which so far have been mainly from 'mainstream' critics. ...But for comic book/Marvel/Joss Whedon fans... its fucking load-blowing material! There isn't a duff note in the entire film! Even Cap's new suit makes sense because *SPOILER* (its 'old-fashioned' design is referenced and explained by another character) *SPOILER ENDS* I'm going back tomorrow. You guys in the US are in for one HELL of a treat next week!

I'm not buying that Coulson's dead. Fury said he got the Captain America cards out of Coulson's locker to inspire/manipulate the team, it's not much of a stretch to think that he lied to them about Coulson being dead for the same reason.

Give me more. Please. I Want more. Right now.

...huge scope, wryly written; best Hulk film ever by a smash-mile or a smile for short; best Marvel ever (including Spiderman 2); best Iron Man ever; Hawkeye? okay fuck it; it's funny as hell; Loki is cool and a dick at the same time... Sorry to be on the side of consensus but sometimes the hype equals the quality. 3D is still shit though and I would have rather basked in 2D glory. The only thing wrong with it is its poster, which sucks. For the record, I am not a Whedon fan and I am not a (huge) Marvel fan. Shit blows extravaganzas (Incredibles notwithstanding) out of the CGI water they sprung from (Micheal, McG meet Joss, your new master). The real deal is here and it's almost as good as Brad Bird's epic. If not right next to it.
-
Saw the 2d version of course, i had tears in my eyes at one stage from sheer awesomeness.
-
I've never seen so many people from all the different ranges of age and demography this excited for a movie. Friends, family members that I never actually thought it'd give a damn about a Marvel movie are all unbelievably excited to watch. I've never witnessed people here in Brazil giving a movie the amount of standing ovations like this movie. I've never seen so many people so ecstatic after watching a premiere. I've never seen a movie like The Avengers. Now superhero movies will be divided between before The Avengers and after The Avengers. The insane amount of hype doesn't even begin to make this movie justice. This movie will be unstoppable, it really will take the World by its groins and smash it. Am I the only one finding it hillarious how Nolan fanboys are doing everything they can to make this movie look bad, good but not better than TDk or whatever? Whoever said that Whedon made Nolan his bitch with The Avengers hit the nail in the head: this movie isn't afraid or ashamed of its comic book origins, it embraces and the public it's embracing it back. This is the beginning of the golden age of superhero movies, and I'm calling it right now: The Avengers will surpass the one billion barrier faster than any other movie ever did. I don't really know what's the limits for this movie's box office. All I know is that this is the best superhero movie I've ever seen, quite possibly the best blockbuster I've ever seen and I can't wait until I see it again.

Nolanoids have gone jealous because everyone is talking about

the Avengers, praising it and telling how awesomely awesome it is,overshadowing both TDK and the upcoming TDKR? and they are so desperate that their god is losing his glory, that they are doing their hardest to make the movie look bad? FUCK THEM. For the record,i am sure that TDKR will make more money than Avengers, that's for granted since TDK was a huge success and there is already a very big dedicated fanbase. But who gives a fuck. I am sure TDKR will be great, but guys guys guys AVENGERS is PARADIGM SHIFT in the cinematic superhero genre,we are looking to a new era of super-hero movies with this film.so it doesnt matter how much more money TDKR will gross and how much more praise it will.because: AVENGERS IS STILL THE SHIT.

I'm willing to bet that The Avengers will top Titanic, becoming the most grossing movie ever. I'm not fucking around, I don't see nothing able to beat The Avengers this year. Nothing. Not even The Hobbit.

by KilliK
It is afterall a super-hero movie with a limited demographic range of the audience. It is the awesomest super-hero movie ever but that's not enough to put it in the same level of Titanic.Titanic is an entirely different beast. Unfortunatelly it is not going to top TDKR either, unless the non-american worldwide audience gets wild with the movie and increase the percentage of its total grosses a lot.60% of TDK'S grosses came from the usa market, but the Avengers is not going to achieve this percentage from there.so it needs the worldwide market to achieve this percentage if it wants to reach the success of TDK.but i doubt it.

People need to rein in the hype. It was very good but not the mindblowing perfection
by atlatl
everyone says it is. It has all the satisfying geek pleasing moments peppered throughout, and the funny quips were plentiful, but the heli carrier act just dragged, and the alien army soldiers didn't seem all that bad ass - I don't think they killed a single person in the destruction. Overall, Captain America was the best, most completely satisfying of the Marvel movies.
-
One can complain about a lack of a real plot or depth, etc. That's missing the point entirely of why this film exists. This is a true summer film and will be remembered as a great one with the best of them. And that's not to say a plot/depth was non-existent, either. What I mean is; you won't judge this type of film the same way you would judge a Kubric film. This is an event film. 100% entertainment done well. I don't fall for hype. I obviously wish a movie turns out good, regardless of what it is. But I don't let predetermined feelings effect a movie. There are better things to invest genuine emotions in. So when someone says "it's all hype. Don't drink the cool aid!" They're full of shit. Whether you're hyped for this movie or not won't matter. It's simply well made on all fronts. You don't have to "turn your brain off" because the characters are interesting and engaging. You care about them ALL. You WANT them to succeed. And that's arguably the movies greatest strength. You genuinely root for the good guys. With the bar now raised in the superhero genre, It will be interesting to see how they try to top it. With Batman & Prometheus still coming out, this could be a summer for the ages (In terms of movies)

All characters were well done, pacing was great, dialogue/banter between ALL characters was well done. LOVED the Stan Lee AND Pat Keirnan cameos. (Pat's a NY1 anchor!) Hulk vs. Loki. Ho-Leeeee (Stan Lee) SHIT. LOL And some dude wrote abouve that Cap wasn't used well enough? Fuck that. Cap is coming into his own in this, dealing with new people and a new world, plus a fucking war. At the end, Cap is in charge and regulates. While Stark does alot of shit, Cap becomes eventually does become the man. (And I copied and pasted this from another TB. Fuck it, the movie was great.) Now THAT'S how you do a Superhero Summer Blockbuster. (No offense, Bats.)
-
But it's not a great film. The stinger with SHIELD, the helicarrier sequence and the end battle all last far too long. Enemies are insanely awful, pure cannon fodder that gets taken down ridiculously easy. I mean... that mechanical thing from the trailer that we all went 'WHOA' about lasts less than two minutes, before three or four more show up. Now don't get me wrong, for sheer moments it's the best Marvel film BY FAR. But the plotting is non-existent, there's no lead character to care about (you'd think it'd be Captain America, and he comes close, or even Fury for the human element... but Fury disappears for most of the final battle), and the bad guys (save for Loki) are stunningly ineffectual. As a spectacle it's stunning and filled with genius moments, but as a constructed film it's a mess. Which is sad, given that Iron Man, Hulk and Captain America all have fantastic structures.

-
Yeah, because "best moments of any Marvel film by far" is akin to saying "this fucking sucks." Those moments were head and shoulders above anything in any comic-book film. But that's what the film is, a bunch of moments. When the hype dies down, we'll all be discussing those moments and people will go 'yeah, there was some really shitty stuff like everyone arguing because a sceptre told them too.' Cut forty minutes, and it'd easily be the best superhero film ever made. And you'd lose absolutely nothing of import, given all the awesome action scenes towards the end are precariously balanced between ridiculous 'hey, look, here's four more mechanical dragon' rubbish.

And I like how you're so stupid that you read a post which says 'best superhero film moments ever' and 'cut forty minutes and it'd be the best superhero film ever' and somehow come to the conclusion that I'm a nitpicking fanboy. If everyone loves this film, great. There's a lot to love. But one dissenting opinion getting you this angry... well, it says a lot.

Wow, you're absolutely right. I... I'm a failure. At everything. And I never knew it until some guy with username referring to a Muppet character told me a via the AICN Talkback. Thanks. Sincerely. I don't know what I'm doing with my life. Sure I'm sat here, at a keyboard, scrolling the internet while waiting for some comics to arrive and plotting the next year of the comic I write, in between figuring out how to promote the next digital copy for sale... but I didn't like The Avengers, so clearly I have no social skills and am a miserable human being with no joy. Well, I'll be sure to tell my friends that I'm not visiting them for the foreseeable future. And in the meantime, I'll pull down my chronological timeline of events within the Alien films (including AvP), because dammit... when someone I barely know online who can't read tells me to enjoy things, I have to listen. I've been looking forward to this film for months. It didn't disappoint. Whedon has brought is talent for writing and directing an ensemble cast to the screen in a great summer showpiece. Some have said the plot is thin, I'd say that its par for the course in this type of movie. Yet it doesn't detract. This is a high octane action movie with the great hero characters. All get a fair crack of the whip too. It made me feel like a kid again reading those comics and THAT my friends is the entire point. It deserves to do stella business, I can see word of mouth pushing the profits for this film into the stratosphere :-) Thankyou for allowing me to relive my childhood Mr. Whedon. He promised and delivered. :-)

There are some freshly minted Geeks in Vietnam today...
by capt.haddock
I moved from the US to Saigon about a year ago and it's been a great pleasure for me to find so many American movies playing here (I was a bit worried about this before I left) and it's been interesting to see how certain films go over here; I've seen quite a few while here (saw Captain America when I first arrived, which was a treat - I wasn't expecting it to play here, necessarily), and I can say that they love American blockbusters here in Vietnam. Comedies of manners (say, Bridesmaids) don't seem to play as well but they love a big budget spectacle (Rise of the Planet of the Apes and MI:GP both seemed to go over really well) They don't get everything that I'd love to see playing over here, but hey ... I saw The Avengers today, a week before the States - 'Nuff said! First off, I will agree this movie totally works. Fun, exciting, great characterization, well balanced, true to the spirit of it's sources, and just awesome. I made mine Marvel growing up and I have to take my hat off to Whedon and Marvel Films for taking on this incredibly difficult task and making it look easy. I wanted to share a bit about the screening I went to; it was a early Saturday afternoon showing (2-D, 7.1 Digital - looked and sounded great) and there were a ton of young, excited Vietnamese kids in the theater. As the movie was going, you could hear and just feel the excitement of these kids - cheering, laughing, pointing out the obvious with excited chatter. When Thor landed on the jet, you could hear the buzz and someone say out loud "It's Thor!"; a cheer went up when Banner says "I'm always angry...", turns into the Hulk and stops the giant Chitauri Worm cold in it's tracks; when they pulled out from Stark tower at the end to show only the "A" remaining, the kid next to my wife says, "It's A for Avengers!" with just total delight. I got big into comics when I was 9, 10, 11 years old and I've keep my love and appreciation for these characters throughout my life. The 11-year-old-version-of-me's head would have exploded seeing The Avengers on screen like this. Today I sat in the theater, twenty years later in a foreign country half way around the world, enjoying and sharing this movie with kids who were connecting with these characters in the same way that I had when I was their age. Hey, that's just cool...aint it?!?! -capt.haddock
-
NOW do you understand why you should back Joss Whedon?
-
-That beat right before the title card of "Marvel's The Avengers" comes up - chills. -The long, unbroken shot during the New York City battle, where we catch up with each Avenger doing their part in the fight - Classic. -"He's adopted." -The scene with Cap stepping in to defend the old man from Loki, ending with Cap and Iron Man's first meeting - great scene. I'm impressed with how they continue to write Cap as square and as old-fashioned as he is, but it still comes across badass. -Coulson's death. Yes, I do think he's dead (and don't bring him back, Marvel! It' would be a shame to stomp all over those final words!). I love the character but I thought his death was well handled. He was the link throughout these movies, leading up to now - it was appropriate that his sacrifice was the thing that really brought the team together. -Robert Downey continues to own; there really would be none of this without what he brought to the first Iron Man. I liked his arc in The Avengers with Cap calling him out as the selfish, 'not-jump-on-the-wire' guy to his role in the climax. -Silvestri's score. I thought it hit just the right tone; classic feel, dramatic, stirring. Effective. -Hulk; best CGI version yet, he has lots of great moments. As much as I would have loved to have seen Edward Norton here, Ruffalo does a good Banner. -Thanos pulling the strings in Avengers? The Infinity Gauntlet appearing in Thor? The mind boggles...
-
I wonder how much of the reaction to Avengers boils down to who is a Marvel versus DC fan. Back in the olden days, there really was quite a split. Oddly, in the 60's-70's Marvel was "darker" and edgier, then Frank Miller re-tooled Batman and that coin flipped. But every schoolyard had its "who's cooler? Batman or Spiderman? Who's stronger? Superman or Hulk?" conversations going on. It would be fascinating to look at the Nolan fans versus Whedon fans (or: Dark Knight fans versus Avengers fans) and see whether they are sorting out pretty much the same way. I was always more of a Marvel fan, but did enjoy Batman quite a bit. Enjoyed "Dark Knight" but didn't think it was the best ever--but always was happy for Batfans that they'd gotten such a tremendous film. Now it's possible that Marvel fans have stolen a beat, and I hope Batman fans are as open-hearted about it. the carousel will turn around again, and competition is good for everyone.
-
I mentioned earlier that I thought this was the best CGI Hulk yet, and I do think that the Hulk in The Avengers is the best looking on-screen-Hulk I've seen yet. But, I remembered that Ruffalo said at one point how excited he was because he was going to be the first person to actually play both Banner and the Hulk, through motion capture. I wonder how far he went with it, with stunts, etc.? Here's an article where he mentions it: http://www.vulture.com/2010/09/mark_ruffalo_on_actually_playi.html Also, having Lou Ferrigno deliver Hulk's one line of dialogue? Awesome.
-
And the hulk totally steals the end of the film. One, rather sad death too :( Good job, Joss!
-
I dont follow the comics, so I didnt get who that was at the end? Someone throw a brother a bone here!
-
best hulk yet.
-
Not an exaggeration. I had tears in my eyes. Actually tears. TDK is an amazing film. But where that film is spinning 3 dishes flawlessly. (Story Performances Direction) Avengers feels like it is spinning like 8 or 9 flawlessly. Everything works. I mean it really works. Not too much time for the flagship Iron Man for those who thought this'd just be IM3. Everyone shines. The action is breathtaking while still understandable(MICHAEL BAY). I mean characters are doing team up moves from Marvel Ultimate Alliance for Christsakes! No Comic Book Movie Comes Close. Amazing.
-
The problem they gave themselves was casting 'names' in some of the leads. Wouldn't it have been simpler to cast a bunch of unknowns in ALL the roles and let the fan base of Marvel carry it through at the box office? Confused? Phil Chard is.

Nolan was my Whedon after Dark Knight. I was always a DC fanboy and though I actually like Whedons work I hate all the baggage that comes with him (whedonites). However, I can't wait for Avengers and think it will be the movie of the year. I am dreading Dark Knight Rises and think it will be Nolans Spiderman 3 or Blade Trinity. DC burned alot of bridges with their fan base lately and I have to say I have a new found respect for Marvel. Still hope I am wrong about Dark Knight Rises though.
-
Could anyone tell me why this movie is being released outside the US first? Anything to do with Weekends?
-
I didn't see how a film like this could be done well, it just seemed like a combination of too much outlandishish, the kind of thing that could fill up a comic book but come off terribly cheesy on the big screen. Happy to admit I was wrong, Whedon knocked it out of the park. Great action, great characters, I was hugely impressed by the subtle way he established stakes and genuine heartfelt character beats for each guy, stuff that gave them actual moments during the big battle to care about. And he did it without sacrificing the comic book-i-ness of it, this isn't needlessly dark and grounded, which isn't meant to be a swipe at Nolan, I love love LOVE Dark Knight and can't wait for rises, and think for Batman Nolan's tone and vision is right on. But you can argue that Whedon has the harder task, to take all the elements of a film like this and still have it all exist in a way that we care about it (unlike, say, something like the upcoming GI Joe flick, which looks like it'll just be a fun action flick that exists in a wacky action filled world completely separated from the audience). Eh, I'm rambling and making much less sense than I had hoped. Great film, an a great start to a summer that's going to have Nolan's Batman and Ridley's Aliens returning to the big screen, and a year that'll be finished off by a Mende's helmed Bond, Jackon on the Hobbit, and Django Unchained (plus new Wes Anderson and Ang Lee's Life of Pi). 2012!
-
Is this after ALL the credits are over? I really wish they'd stop doing that. Sometimes I end up being the only idiot left in the cinema waiting for a scene while the folks are waiting to tidy up the place for the next show.
-
Last night I saw a well written, superbly illustrated comic book come to life before my very eyes on the silver screen, and it was fucking awesome. I will see this movie at least 2 or 3 more times in the theater, that is, if my eyeballs can withstand all of the relentless, additional fucking. Touche, Mr. Whedon and Co. Touche.
-
I hope DKR is stellar (even if I hope Avengers beats it--just the Marvel fan in my soul), but I get a feeling that it might just do "terrific" but not earth-shaking business. Wish it no ill, however. But I'm flying from Atlanta to L.A. to see Avengers with my daughter at the 1:15 show at Universal city on Saturday the 5th. Deliberately choreographing a lifetime high-point Geek Moment, just for the hell of it. But...wouldn't it be great if we got a half-dozen mind-blowing genre movies this year? Prometheus, Spider Man, Avengers, DKR, Skyfall, Hobbit...the possibility alone makes my mouth water. Bring 'em on!

LOL at Diox treating Nolan's Batman like it was a Bergman film.
by hank henshaw
TDK was saved by it's take on the Joker, that many people found appealing. The rest of the movie is nowhere near as good as some people believe. Bale does a great Wayne, but his choice to have Batman speak like he has a sore throat is ridiculous. Batman Begins is a snore-fest only comparable to Superman Returns. I prefer DC to Marvel, but when it comes to movies DC is way behind. Just the same way that Marvel can't compete with DC's superior output in animation.
-
I don't claim to know anything about you other than you really like Stargate Universe and you APPEAR to be an accomplished troll* and I'd still like to know, is there really nothing more interesting going on where you live other than to come on a message board and creating false binary opposites and then getting all worked up about them?? "Doctor Who" is not the enemy of "Stargate Universe" and "The Avengers" is not the enemy of the "Dark Knight Rises" To think so is a misapplication of perfectly decent intelligence that could be used for something productive. <b> *I'd hate to think you were taking anything you say seriously.
-
You are absolutely right about this years crop of movies. I can't remember a year with so much potential in ages. I just hope all these upcoming movies live up to that potential.

Who'd have thought it would have had those in it, as well as the flashy flashy, bang bang geekgasm that was expected. But I've always been a Browncoat, so the magnificence of the master was never in doubt by me. ;) I'm just pleased he's found a wider audience at last. More Avengers please. I enjoyed this one greatly :) And thanks for the answers on Thanos. Still means nothing for me, but that should be good. I never fall into flames on optimus type discussions on any funny book films as I am from the UK, so only ever saw tv shows of Batman, Spiderman, and Hulk. No raping of my childhood ever occurs. I just judge the films on face value when I watch them. PS. The Dark Knight series is surely the most grumpy of the funny book franchises. Fun's good, M'Kay?

The biggest and most bad-ass superhero movie in a long time, fantastic action, funny banter between characters and for the first time a fuckin awesome Hulk! As someone else stated, the solo marvel movies won't seem enough now. Downsides and there weren't many to be honest - Hawkeye ad Black Widow are mearly side characters, for Avengers 2. Marvel work your shit out with Fox and Sony so you can get Spidey or Wolverine in the next one. The Aliens were a bit faceless and just robot fodder to be destroyed. Would've preferred a bit more character depth for the aliens. All in all, i think only The Dark Knight Rises and Prometheus will equal or top this in the coming weeks.
-
lol And getting him to say the word alien (even if not quite in context) was a minor geekout right there! Bruce Banner and the Hulk were brilliant, and intregal characters in this.
-
The 3d makes for a much sharper image so id recommend 3D. The whole time I was watching it in 3d I didn't really notice it, I take that as a good thing because I was fully immersed... and I was stoned out of my mind.

a quantum leap in the comic-book movie genre. It's the size of a Star Wars movie, it's the Marvel Movieverse...and it is a joy to behold. Pure magic that makes you acutely aware of how cynical other super-hero movies have been/are being made. Take the glorious world of the comic-book and run with it.
-
and I would wager that it may become the biggest movie of all time. Last thing I'll say....is this movie is 2 and a half hours of magic. It's the shot of the liquid T-1000 coming out of the fire, it's the first dinosaur you saw in Jurassic Park, it's Indy climbing under the truck. But instead of just one moment, it's the entire third act of The Avengers.
-
.......and it looks like Avengers could easily end up making it's entire production budget back before it even opens in North America, where Marvel movies have tended to perform much better than in the global market. So far it's running close to $80 Million already after only 3 (non-weekend) days and it hasn't even opened in some of the bigger International markets like Russia, China, Brazil or Japan.
-
Superman Returns screwed DC hard...They lost more confidence later, with Green Lantern screwing them even harder, they scrapped The Wonder Woman TV series and Nolan's Batman series became their only success story. I wonder if marvel didn't have a huge hit with Iron Man ... what would they have done? (Xmen is with Fox, and Spiderman is with Sony)
-
@subcriber9 - there is a short, stylized credit sequence that credits all the principles, then we get the tag scene, so you won't have to wait all the way through. I was still with only a handful of folks left in the theater tho! @col. tigh-fighter - folks have already told ya it was Thanos, but, FYI, in most of Thanos' big story lines, he wrecks havoc with the goal of romantically impressing a character who is the female personification of Death. They sort of nod at this when, before he grins, the other character says to him (paraphrase), "to try and conquer the humans would be to court Death..."
-
You're totally right; Marvel need Thor and Captain America to hit like they did for Avengers to really work, but none of this would be happening without the first Iron Man doing what they did. It's pretty amazing to look back at it because there was no guarantee that it would have worked. The character wasn't all that well known, Favreau wasn't exactly known for handling big budget hits and at the time Robert Downey was doing awesome work in smaller stuff (Zodiac, A Scanner Darkly, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) but he was no where near being the top-line, A-list star that he is now. Shows the power of really knowing and believing in the characters and the story they wanted to tell. Wasn't the Avengers Initiative tag scene in Iron MAn just a sorta tossed off nod to the fans at the time?

Avengers was decent enough, not a spectacular movie event though.
by scriptgirl_nipples
The Hawkeye character is an absolute waste of space. ..... The bad acting by almost all of them, especially while delivering the 'funny' comments. ....... Too much Iron Man being shown as the central character...... The end of the fighting was just stupid and abrupt.

..Or has Marvel realised Hulk works best as a movie supporting-character, not as a leading man. (I LOVED Ang Lee's Hulk and still don't get why it wasn't more successful) @capt.haddock...Avengers Initiative tag scene was serious, they got Samuel L.Jackson (who doesn't mess about). Marvel had BIG plans even then. Captain America (1990), Coreman's Fantastic Four, The Punisher-War Zone, Daredevil, Blade 3....It's inspiring to know that from such dreadful misteps, Marvel has finally learnt how to put their characters in good films. Avengers was a very smart move for them to gather, protect and showcase their character property/investments. Avengers has actually given Hulk another shot at his own movie again. Has any movie character ever been rebooted so much in as short a space of time?

Iron Man was never not going to be a hit. They made that movie right.
by hank henshaw
Warner have only themselves to blame for making shit like Superman Returns (Singer was a horrible choice to handle Superman) or Green Lantern (you can feel how this movie was made all by studio suits that wante to have their own Iron Man). I will not be surprised if/when Man of Steel blows in their faces, again. They are stupid. "Oh, so Nolan made a grim-dark Batman movie that made a bunch of money? I bet he can make Superman work too!" and he goes and hand-picks Hack Snyder to direct it. FAIL. btw, Batman Begins made LESS at the b.o. than Superman Returns, but yeah, SR was more expensive
-
Loved it. Being a buffy, angel, firefly fan I knew Joss would bring the goods. His writing was so sharp, the comedy bits were gold, the action was fun and exciting...
-
Saw it in IMAX 3D last night and it was fantastic- really great to see characters (main and supporting) from so many previous films gel together so perfectly. I know a film like this won't have a completely watertight plot, but.... 1) In the final battle, how come Thor didn't charge up Iron Man's suit to 400% as in their first encounter? Was that something that only worked with the Mark VI suit? 2) Why didn't Thor fly up to save the falling Iron Man? 3) What happened to Eric Selvig? 4) What happened to Tony's Arc Reactor? It didn't glow through his T-shirt in some shots. 5) Why didn't Cap sign Coulson's cards? I thought that made Cap come off a bit of a jerk. These are minor quibbles though - the film is genius and is fantastic in IMAX 3D.
-
That's the movie I saw last Thursday night. I don't get the adulation and worship surrounding this movie from both critics & fanboys alike! Yes it's an entertaining & crowd pleasing flick but the status it's been elevated to baffles me! Right from the opening scene with Loki & the alien leader I felt like I was watching the 1980 Flash Gordon movie or some other cheesy sci fi show. As the film went on I realised that the comedy & witty one liners were compensating for a multitude of shortfalls, the usual sins that plague any number of summer blockbuster, weak contrived story, lack of real emotional wallop, sense of real drama and overall cheesiness. The thing I've realised about The Avengers is that it distracts the audience with a constant barrage of laugh out moments, some geniunely hilarious & others so daft that they just make you laugh away from these shortfalls! I had the feeling that Whedon & Marvel looked to the success of Iron Man and thought lets have all the the characters cracking wise just like Tony Stark and we'll win the audience over. The problem is that the comedy didn't know when to let up, even Agent Coulson is firing off the one liners during his big death scene! And Thor's "he's adopted line" was of course very funny & had the audience in fits but it was completely out of character and just took the movie another big step closer to being an all out comedy/spoof version of 'The Avengers' rendering any sense of drama or threat null. But the thing that really had the audience on the floor was that hilarious Hulk take down of Loki!! I mean that would be the equivilent of Batman defeating Bane towards the end of TDKR by simply kneeing him in the nuts!! sure the audience would love it and the roof would come of the house but its pure farce! Yeah I know The Avengers has a deliberate lighter, fun tone but this one went right over the line with the laughs and became too much of a comedy devoid of drama & a sense of threat. I still enjoyed the film but for the wrong kind of reasons!

I've been waiting for this movie since 1998 when I walked into that Ralph Fiennes movie of the same name
by YackBacker
Boy was I confused by their take on Cap and the gang. Sean Connery did make a decent Loki though...
-
capthaddock is right on this one, Jacksons cameo on Iron Man was a last minute addition that Favrea thought would be fun, Favreau has actually called The Avengers film an accident of sorts since it all sprung from this. Remember that when Marvel was going through its cheapskate studio phase (recasting Howard, almost losing Favreau) and when they DID start making Avengers plans in earnest, they were thinking about recasting Jackson to get someone more attainable (I think in this case it was less money, and more Jackson's willingness to sign on for 9 films that sealed it).
-
Now I can sleep at night :-)
-
it was awesome, nearly had me in tears seeing such a great comic book movie, so many great moments, it needs repeat viewings!
-

@donchild, I didn't think it was too comedic like you.
by hank henshaw
If you've ever read a comic, you know superheroes tend to have a lot of witty banter, one liners and puns. Die Hard, one of the best action movie ever, has a protagonist that deals with the situation he was put into with plenty of self-deprecating humor and taunting the terrorists with jokes. Same goes for Indiana Jones. I think the movie used levity to break the tension just about right (okay, maybe it could have used to cut out 1 or 2 jokes). When I saw the movie the audience seemed to love it, and the theater was packed.
-
Iron Man's success gave rise to The Avengers. Could The Avengers success give a third Hulk movie a shot? or is that characters star chances all done?
-
it was the lack of tension in the first place that made some of the humourous moments feel ill placed. The over riding emotional component that I felt was mainly only humour and as much as I love a humourous & snappy one liners in an action/comic flick or any genre for that matter I didn't feel any real sense of threat or menace here because of the constant jokes. Hiddleson delivered a well balanced performance (he was better here than he had been in Thor) but when he is defeated in such a broad & silly manner (no matter how funny that scene was) and lies there sporting an acme cartoon dazed expression I can't help but think what the heck!! Like I said before I still enjoyed the movie but feel that it's been very lucky in gaining the kudos and cash its been getting! Still each to their own and its always great to see a comic book break records and do well!
-
A god, a scientific genius who becomes superstrong monster, a rich technical weaponry genius and a super-soldier. The only threat to that line-up would've been if Loki hypnotised Iron Man to his side instead of Bowman No-Powers. This film's main purpose was to establish the teams dynamic rather than threaten them. It's tricky to both establish and threaten/undermine a team in the same film. That's why there were so many "bonding" fights throughout. With 4 big character franchise properties at stake, Avengers was not a film , it was a function, lol and it served its function well.

by WINONA_RYDERS_PUSSY_JUICE
I watched a few minutes of a pirated cam copy of Avengers and it didn't really draw my interest. It doesn't help that Iron Man 2 sucked, Captain America sucked... This movie doesn't look very interesting. Hulk smash some generic computer animated aliens? Fuck this simplistic childish noise, I'm all about The Dark Knight Returns. Yeah, Avengers fanboys, suck it!
-
The scene with the cards is there to show that although Coulson's death was painful to him, Fury is still willing to use it to manipulate the team for the greater good. It's a great character beat in a film full to the brim with them. Massive Whedon fan and the film is fucking awesome. He did it. He really did it. There are too many great moments to mention and having seen a few clips before none of them are that revealing, although I do wish the Hulk catch was a surprise. But fuck it. That was my fault for being impatient. I can't wait to see it again. Puny God
-
ruffalo wasnt too bad though i was a bit unconvinced by start giving him a 2 minute pep talk thus giving him complete mastery of the other guy. i loved the bits where he lashed out at thor and clobbered loki :-)
-
It was very good. By far the best superhero movie yet, I agree that solo projects are going to find it hard to compete and they will feel dull in comparison. As many others have said, Hulk was the star of the show for me. Him bitch-slapping Loki was the best scene and him bitch slapping Thor was also laugh out loud funny. Tony Stark was on top form, I didn't like them using him as a flying mechanic for a large part of the movie though, a huge waste of the CGI budget. Thor didn't have enough to do but was good all the same. The fight felt too big for Hawkeye and to a muh lesser extend Black Widow and even Captain America sometimes. The build up felt quite long in places, there wasn't much of a story and Loki's plan wasn't particularly threatening. In fact, he didn't do anything much at all apart from invite the aliens. Having the main villain mostly quiet for a 2.5 hour movie was a gamble that might make it quite weak on repeat viewings, maybe. Those repeat viewings will have to be on Blu-ray as it as almost £20 for me an my son to watch it in 3D and that's without drinks and popcorn. What a fucking rip off the cinema is! We'd both love to see it again but there's no way I can justify spending £40 on 1 movie that I don't even get to keep at the end of it.
-
I have to disagree with most reviewers and say that the Avengers is probably the best use of 3D since Avatar, and left me with no headache or eyestrain (unlike certain films with Titan in the title). I'm amazed that this was a post-conversion jobbie because it certainly doesn't look like it.
-
Am I wrong or when we see Pepper Potts near the beginning of the film, was her hair blonde? (i.e. Ms.Paltrow's natural colour). When we see Pepper right at the end, her hair looks red again.
-
There's lots of talk about whether Scarlett J. is attractive or not, but for my money, she comes third in this film. Gwyneth Paltrow (Pepper Potts) ... forget that Chris Martin bloke, marry me, please. And Cobie Smulders (Agent Hill) can take me in for questioning any day.
-
(apart from the forgettable score) is that it's ONLY two-and-a-half hours long. It doesn't feel it, you want more!!! *Spoiler* oh, and how the end of the actual battle seems to be nicked from the Phantom Menace. But I guess they needed a tidy ending, so I'll let them off that one. And did the army guys actually do anything, or did they just turn up to watch?
-
I want that phrase added to the dictionary. Just brilliant.
-
easy to fix this gripe, and I am sure I am not the only one thinking thins, BUT, I want Cap's WW2 costume from the movie BACK, it was a better by far costume and hopefully will be back for second movie; BRING BACK CAPS COSTUME from WW2 it worked great in the movie why the hell did Whedon even change it anyways other wise this movie ROCKS on all levels, see small complaint is all
-
Now that phas 1 Avengers are Assembled any guesses on the "phase 2" end tags for Thor 2, Hulk2, Captain America 2, Ant-Man 1 (featuring Hawkeye and Black Widow) and Iron Man 3 THEN Avengers 2 vs.Thanos and his Infinity Gauntlet....I'm thinking each end tag will feature Thanos capturing an infinity gem and Agent Hill will be the new agent Caulson popping up when Nick Fury is busy trying to recruit those marvel characters not being handled well by their owners in solo films (ie.Blade, Daredevil, Elektra, Fantastic Four, Spiderman, Punisher and Ghost Rider) ....... Xmen films belong to Fox now.
-
did see it yesterday, and will see it again tonight! the dialogs and the interaction between the characters is sooooo cool. Sure the action is great, but how they talk to each other ... absolutly awesome!! Everybody is on top of the game and i could not say who's my favourite... maybe Hulk? or Loki? Thor? i am sure i will see it again and again!!

re: Spoilers, there are a few emotional beats and cameos that I'm glad I didn't have spoiled going in, but generally you're right - this is more enjoyable for doing exactly what I hoped it would do and doing it extremely well than for being totally surprising. re: previous movies, you won't be lost, it's all pretty straight forward but like volllllume3 said, Captain America spells out the backstory on the McGuffin threat and Thor spells out the backstory on the villain Loki. Of any of the previous movies, I'd say The Avengers acts most like a sequel to Thor.
-

Best Parts 1. Every damn Iron Man funny scene. Couldnt stop laughing! Does Mother know u weareth her robes? 2. The Hulk. Every part of Ruffalo's performance was awesome. Funny, great action, best hulk yet 3. Stark/ Loki Bar talk. Totally Awesome. Plus when Loki threw him out of the window and the siut caught him (ull get it if u see the movie) 4. The scene where The Avengers are first all together in Shield. So funny! That Man is playing Gallaga! 5. New York. Every part of that battle was awesome! 6. After Scene Credits. THANOS!!!! IS COMING!!!1!!!! these are not in order

4/5 First half was boring second half pretty cool but relied too much on CGI. The final 30 minutes was basically Transformer 3 with Iron Man,Cap etc in place of Prime and Bumblebee. The baddies were useless, like battle droids although Loki hammed it up nicely.

Fury used Coulson's stabbing as a way to bond the team together over the one constant thing they almost all had in common. So his "death" would be the bonding the team needed.

I don't even feel that comparing with Donner's Superman is good enough, I've seen three times and I'm going for my 4th screening this Friday, we're talking about a movie that as much as a game changer as Star Wars, folks. I'd even dare to say that The Avengers is not only a game changer and the Star Wars of our time, it is THE BEST movie experience of all time when it comes to blockbusters, it just has no contenders. While Avatar was a step to that direction, it looked too much like a videogame. The Avengers is the culmination not only of all the Marvel movies until now, but the culmination of what George Lucas created back then in 1977. No matter how much people hype this movie, no hype will suffice what The Avengers really is. Tonight you'll witness History in the making, ladies and lads.
-
...here in Scotland. Audience cheering is something which does not happen very much here, can't really remember the last tie it happened, so I was shocked that the whole theater was erupting in places, in every showing I was in. This is definitely playing VERY well to audiences. Good stuff...
-
I absolutely loved it...the thing is, it didn't blow my mind at the same level that The Matrix did back in '99, but had a GREAT time though
-
Can't remember who said, but yeah, the dialogue in the trailers seemed pretty bad. Happy to say, though, that some scenes used different takes or edits, so they were better delivered in my opinion, and in context worked much better in the film. "...you can be damn sure we'll avenge it" is such a terrible line in the trailer, but in the film it works a treat. "What if I say....no" from Banner was shittily delivered in the trailer, in the film a different edit was used (or maybe they voiced over it), and it's much better. And so forth... I don't know why they let those sub-par edits out in the trailer to advertise the film, but tbh it doesn't exactly seem to have ruined the box office reception for them.

And I HATE the idea of a conversion. This one works, and I begrudgingly approve. To be honest, you won't even notice after a while, until they use it for full effect. As I mentioned elsewhere, yes you can see it in 2d. You can also see Citizen Kane with the sound off..... but WHY?
-
Yes, they did use different takes/edits. I like it. It gets the dumbasses who like that ON THE NOSE crap in the seats to see it. Then they get treated to something better once they sit down.
-
Loki is the real villain, I get that, but what a lost opportunity with the aliens. I was not the least bit worried for our heroes. The Avengers became rodent exterminators at the end- just clean up the rats and go home. Hulk was excellent in this, we need more of THAT Hulk.
-
There are a number of other sites reporting that a second scene has been added, right at the end of the credits - a one minute, dialogue free scene of the avengers doing what Tony Stark suggests they all do near the end of the film
-
I think so many people were stuck on the idea of the tragic Hulk from the old TV show, or wanting to focus too much on Banner's struggles. They never really got to the superhero aspects of him. Obviously, that was what Marvel was trying to lead into with the Norton movie. That he sets out to find a way to control the monster and use it. I feel that Whedon and Marvel execs were specifically throwing the expected interpretation out the window by letting him spend some time as a fun character. Comic fans knew about that Hulk, but the uninitiated may not have.
-
Thanos had a pretty extensive history in the Marvel Universe before he ever encountered the Silver Surfer. Thanos' main enemy was first Captain Marvel (though he first made a small appearance in Iron man 55), and his second main enemy was Adam Warlock. He was around for...10-15 years or so before ever being in conflict with Surfer. So to answer your question, it would not be hard at all to do a Thanos movie without Surfer. Especially since a Guardians of the Galaxy movie is most likely going to be announced soon and I'm betting that Thanos will be involved in that, as well. He'll have plenty of enemies to fight so Surfer shouldn't be too missed.

Though i wont be seeing it until tomorrow, I have no problem with "spoliers" and was actually able to find a dark camera phone taken clip of the Thanos reveal online. QUESTION--In the bad quality clip, it appears Thanos" hand looks "human", while he has the distinctive purple skin, big skrullish chin etc when he turns around. Did anyone else perceive it that way? Just curious & I understand if you dont remember due to the joy & shock of seeing that it was Thanos, but thanks to anyone who DOES reply
-
There’s no way this movie will top Avengers ’98! Wait, is that why it is called ‘Avengers Assemble’ in the UK? Because that would be hilarious.
-
...just another great moment, among many: When Banner just managed to catch up with the other Avengers for battle, and he did it with a rusty motorcycle...the audience responded with a collective "aaawwwww...". A reaction full of tenderness and sympathy for the character...awesome!
-
!Lucky for the Avengers the aliens controlled their drones using the same technology as the trade federation in The Phantom Menace! 1000s of bad guys? Just take out the mother ship! Not that I'm complaining, if they'd carried on taking them out 1 by 1 the film would have gone on for hours! For my own reaction to the film as I leave the cinema check out my YouTube video http://youtu.be/l3uCPag_Nzc A comment left by one viewer of the video was ''geekgasm" and they weren't far wrong!
-

..Well, now that you mention it. I don't remember seeing his hand! The image that most stood with me was his devilish face, turning around (it does look skrull!) And of course, it is not mentioned that he is Thanos at all. That is the geek community pointing it :-)

Ann Hornaday of The Washington Post positively raved about the acting in The Avengers. She was so impressed that she wrote a wonderful essay about the performances in The Avengers and other superhero movies
by Jack
This woman usually hates on everything! This is either Marvel's ultimate triumph or a sign of the End Times. Or both. Excerpt: "Christopher Reeve ushered in the Superhero Generation when he first donned the cape and big red “S” in “Superman,” in 1978. With self-effacing leading man Michael Keaton, Tim Burton infused new artistic vision and tonal gravitas with “Batman” in 1989. Since then studios have been clamoring to stake out their patch of the lucrative superhero turf, raiding the vaults of Marvel Enterprises and DC Comics for anyone with a cool costume and ready-made mythology to build a franchise around. The result is that, for the past decade, movie audiences have been fed a steady diet of comic-book movies . Like the NBA, which makes sure basketball fans always have a game to watch, Hollywood has made sure that there’s almost always a spandex-encased vigilante swinging, flying, kicking or Hulking out on a screen somewhere. An escalating arms race in visual effects and post-production dingbats has proceeded apace, leading some naysayers to complain that, with computer-generated imagery, motion-capture animation and spectacle over substance that comic-book movies entail, acting will be all but irrelevant. It turns out they were wrong, as “The Avengers” gratifyingly proves. The biggest — and surely most delightful — surprise of the movie is Mark Ruffalo, a sad-eyed, soulful actor whose bona fides include lauded performances in such respected art-house films as “You Can Count on Me,” “The Kids Are All Right” (for which he was nominated for an Oscar) and “Margaret.” In “The Avengers” Ruffalo plays Bruce Banner, a scientific genius who, due to an early mishap with some errant gamma radiation, turns into the Hulk when he gets angry." I need to warn you that her essay contain SPOILERS so just proceed to read the full thing now if you've watch the movie.
-
The lines/crowds actually looked bigger than any I've seen since AOTC. Wish I could go stand in line with them, share the enthusiasm and excitement. I'll have to wait until tomorrow, sadly. Daytime showing. I hope the cinemas put in new bulbs for the event. When I watched John Carter in 3D, the bulb was very bright, not the usual dark image you get at 3D showings. So... fingers crossed. LOTS of women in line, by the way. Good sign. Lots of comic reading (for the cameras I'm sure) was nice to see. This is an EVENT. And for once the film deserves it.

Hope I'm not too late. The conversion is not dark or blurry, but part of that might depend on the cinema you go to and the age of the bulbs they use. The conversion never felt blurred at all, and was really subdued in a lot of parts. Not over the top. You know how some people say there were *whole parts when I could just take the glasses off and it looked the same*? Well, that will be true with any 3D film doing a wide shot without a lot of dimension involved. If it's just a big, open window into a world that's *out there* past the screen, in parts it will look normal when you take the glasses off. I honestly think it's worth it, and I HATE the idea of conversions. Only good conversions I've seen were Alice (borderline in parts), Captain America (great job) and John Carter (great in parts, not so much in others). I thought Thor was just an okay conversion and Clash of the Titans was utter crap. They need to decide to go with native 3D next time.

It seems like Robert Downey Jr. wasn't just yanking our chain when he said that the cast of "The Avengers" was going to shoot an extra scene in the movie following the world premiere. And Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige also wasn't really off the mark when he teased that "it's been blown out of proportion." There is a second post-credits moment, and it's not what any of us might have expected. We won't get into spoilers above the jump, but Movies.com writer Christopher Campbell confirmed via Twitter yesterday that the screening of "The Avengers" he attended included the second post-credits scene. "Feel bad for any critics who didn't get the second bonus scene at the end of Avengers," he tweeted. "Moviegoers, stay all the way through this weekend!" Now we're getting into spoiler territory, so readers be warned! If the first post-credits scene sets up where the plot of future Marvel movies will go from here, the second one shows us the future of the relationship between the Avengers. In the film, there's a funny moment towards the end of the final battle sequence where Iron Man asks if they can all get shawarma after they're done. Well, it turns out they do. The film's new post-credits scene doesn't contain any dialogue, but shows the entire team sitting down and eating shawarma. According to what Campbell told ComicBookMovie.com, it's roughly about a minute long and Mark Ruffalo seems like he's struggling to keep a straight face throughout the scene. There's been an image circulating the Internet that confirms this. What a great way to round out what's already a fantastic movie! This scene seems like it totally ties together the friendships created in "The Avengers," and is a very Joss Whedon-touch to add. Plus, we can't wait to see the Avengers fully in costume eating at a shawarma joint. Superheroes need to eat too, you know.

Re - Thanos' hand. Saw it in Holland today, and yep, I agree, it did appear to look 'human'ish, tbh.

Bottom line - Imax over 3D...anytime!

re- women of The Avengers - Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo frakking way squire...just no, no, no......old Gwyneth is like a 'wet weekend', and about as sexy as my sock drawer......Cobie Smulders....looks quite rough-ish in the first few scenes, then looks staggeringly 'better' as the movie progresses....better than Gwyneth, but By Buddah, that Johansson minx looks as hot as a hyena from Hades, throughout...and is just bloody sexy.
-
....and after further consideration, that opening scene with Nat Romanoff, is highly urrr...shall we say....quite 'sexily alluring'.....but I'll cease hither, or I'll just end up sounding like Pervy HK, when he reviewed a Twilight film, and prattled on about three main characters being stuck in a tent...and how they all wanted to 'do' each other in various ways.....

OMG! This movie is a comic book brought to life! Full of so many crowd pleasing moments, my favourite? When Hulk is chasing Natasha and Mjolnir appears to the rescue.... The 5 year old kid in me re awoke and i was transported to my school lunch box which had a panel of The Green Goliath v ol' Goldilocks ...... And here i was 34 years later about to be blown away by the sheer awesomeness of a live action fight between Marvel's 2 most powerful & DAMN did it deliver! Will be seeing it again tomorrow & the week after

Thanks for the responses & I'm gonna post the linbk to the vid online below--I've been hesitant to do so because it hasnt been "yanked", but hey--im seeing it tomorrow, so no biggies if it is. IF that is--as it appears to be--Thanos' hand being placed down just before he apparently"stands" up--it sure seems at odds with his normal gauntleted hand and purple skin. Now--the quality is SO bad--perhaps its actually the hand of the "Other" who is giving him the report--it just seemed that he(the Other) actually reacts when Thanos does that, but again, the clip quality is crap, so its hard to tell. Here's the link: http://teaser-trailer.com/avengers-after-credits/

so we can return the franchise to the rightful owners, Marvel. I will not see this movie and I'm asking all readers of AICN to do the same. I want to see Spiderman fail so Sony will not make anymore films with Spiderman. Let's make this a reality so Spiderman can join the Avengers in future adventures. Secret Wars anyone?

... Which it looks like it'll cruise past the way it's going. Now surely that in itself changes things drastically as far as the rights to the other characters go and what Disney are going to be prepared to do to negotiate getting them back to Marvel. I think this is the most interesting area to watch with what kind of an impact this film's enormous success will have on the other studios. If you're Fox, with F4 - and the fan base is rabid about seeing those characters with the Avengers - well isn't that something you're going to want to exploit? Much has been made of the film being a game changer. Yet I see it more as a game changer in terms of the other studios seeing the bigger picture and being prepared to come to the table to negotiate putting the Marvel Universe up there on screen...X-Men, Spidey, F4 et al. Make no mistake, whilst Disney continue with making sequels to Thor, Iron Man and Captain America - all people are going to be thinking about deep down is when they can see another team up. There will be a fundemental shift in the expectations moviegoers have for these kind of movies now and what they want from them. Would Fox rather make $400 million worldwide on a new F4 movie? Or have them be part of a billion dollar Avengers blockbuster, where they stand to make major bank without having to shell out making the thing? Look at the deal Paramount made out of letting Disney have the distribution rights for Avengers and Iron Man 3! $115 million, plus 8% of each film's gross. They stand to make north of $300 million without spending a dime! That was just distribution rights! The more I think about it, the more I think Disney have boxed clever and will wait to see what the reaction is once this movie hits north of a billion in a few weeks. I think Fox and Sony might come a knocking.

wildphantom07...Excellent point about the Concession to Paramount...
by conspiracy
...but not that there is proof positive these multi-character films are on a whole different level of profitability...I'd think the terms for use of Spiderman, X-Men or F4 characters would be so expensive Disney would balk. True..the Paramount deal was a sweet deal for doing basically nothing...but given the numbers being projected..you can BET that, for instance Sony, would want double digit percentages+ for use of what they own. I think it'd be fun to see ALL the Marvel Characters interacting and available for cross film appearances...but the legal wrangling would just be a nightmare and most probably far far to expensive, Iger is a very fiscally conservative and hard nosed fellow. Lets see what happens when Iger steps down in 2015...there are rumblings about who is angling to get that job...if it is the right guy...the checkbook just might come out.

It's not just about the movies though. It's the impact it will have on the merchandise, all the tie-ins. There seems to be so much excitement around this movie that if it makes billions for the Mouse House that changes things considerably. Whilst Iron Man and Spider-Man have been the only two hugely successful Marvel themed movies at the box office, now you have a film bigger than any of those movies, with a ton of characters in them. I'm willing to bet this is going to be a major cash cow for Disney, beyond just the box office. Plus I'm not sure on the deals, but I'm pretty sure that for any F4 movie Fox make, it's Disney/Marvel that make the money on the merchandise. Surely there will come a point where the kind of money Sony and Fox make from the franchises they currently have the movie rights to, just aren't making them the sort of money that's worth putting down $150 million a picture to make? Be interesting to see how well Amazing Spider-Man does in July. To the mainstream, that don't know the material like the comic fans - they will be starting to ask questions about why Spider-Man cannot be in the Avengers. If there is demand for it you can bet something can be worked out. I just think Avengers becoming a phenomenon puts Disney in a very strong position to negotiate.

Disney is gonna have a massive 3rd and 4th quarter...in part due to this film and everything that goes with it. And that is the problem in some respects...the entities who hold the rights to Spiderman, F4, etc...know this is a cash cow...and while they may want a taste...they will make Disney pay dearly for it...maybe too much for Igers taste. Since Disney is doing JUST FINE without Spidey and Co....why spend the money for something that may add little value to the overall product for the vast majority of non-geek film goers? Disney holds all the cards...they WILL get the rights back eventually...it is inevitable, why pay too much for it? And remember...All that Spiderman/F4/Xmen merch...Disney ALREADY gets that taste..even if they don't hold the rights to the films, as they own Marvel 100% and Marvel gets most of those proceeds. Could go either way...stranger things have happened...but I wouldn't hold my breathe to see Spider Man in a Avengers film. Disclosure...I'm Loooong Disney, just bought another 100 shares a few days back.
-
Haven't seen it but... Agent Coulson dies - who cares? non event character the after scene credits = Thanos - never stay till after the credits anyway and a 2/3 second cameo of a character no one outside fans of the comics knows is not an issue they catch Loki, IM lives - WOW I COULDN'T HAVE PREDICTED THOSE PLOT TWISTS! Hawkeyes evil half the film - Fairly inconsequential plot stance in all truth. and if you looked at this and havent seen the movie I feel bad for you - It's pretty difficult to "spoil" a comic book movie as they are all so hideously predictable. The Dark Knight Rises will be the best chance for you to "ruin" one as it is actually a definitive end to a series, which the movies rarely provide.

from Deadline's Nikki Finke: ""FRIDAY MIDNIGHT, 2ND UPDATE…Disney finally released Marvel’s The Avengers at midnight into about 2,500 locations around the U.S. and Canada tonight. And theaters are trying to accomodate all the crowds lining up for hours for their first look at this superhero spectacle. Major theater chains are adding shows from 12:01 AM into the wee hours. ”In an effort to handle the mass demand Regal will be adding additional AM shows at many theatres nationally,” Regal announced. At the AMC Empire in Manhattan, The Avengers was planning to show on 21 screens at 12:01 AM with contingency plans to play it on all 25 if needed. Turns out those extra screens were needed – and most of the moviegoers have on their RealD Avengers collector 3D glasses. The first guest on the IMAX line had been there since 8:39 AM Thursday. The 12:01 IMAX show sold out weeks ago, and less than 100 seats remained for the 3:30 AM show. At the El Capitan in Hollywood, “round the clock” screenings are skedded with breakfast served at 2:30 AM. Exclusive limited print run comic books are on hand for guests at the 4 AM showing. For Friday matinees, Disney set its theater count at 4,349 locations, including 3,364 plays in 3D."
-
Or did AMC end up dropping that plan? I only ask cause I don't see much mention of it in the talkbacks.
-
Loved it. People have complained about the helicarrier scene being too long, I just ate it up. Great interaction between characters. The tracking shot was something out of my childhood dreams. Adored Cap foiling the Chitari "bank robbery". Had to convince my brother that wasnt Red Skull in the credits scene, lol. Only thing I didnt like was Fury, expect a little more charisma from Sam.
-
I took a break during The Incredible Hulk, mostly due to the fact I'd seen it so many times and I wanted to avoid continuity issues going into The Avengers. It was an awesome experience. A long, but awesome experience. It was a lot of fun being able to see one story unfold into the next and then see it all wrapped up in The Avengers... only to have the rug pulled out from under us with the big reveal, that Thanos was behind it all. Fucking Thanos. I have a feeling the Infinity Gems will be a part of Thor 2. Thanos is one of my favorite villains so I'm pretty pumped to see what they do with him. Also, I wonder if they're going to introduce Adam Warlock, Mephisto, or any of the other characters that played a major role in the Infinity Gauntlet saga?

Life long Marvel fan reporting in. I still can't believe we have an AVENGERS movie playing in the theater. I also can't comprehend that it was actually this good. Though I will share in the consensus that it is rather dull until Thor shows up. Nonetheless, the movie takes off and soars afterwards. Hulk was the highlight. His fight with Loki caused the theater to erupt like I've never seen before. Wasn't a fan of the score. Silvestri is a very talented composer. So what the fuck was that?

Never trust Nolanites, kids. This will rule the fucking World. AVENGERS ASSEMBLE!!!!!!!!!!!! PS: The Nolanites remark wasn't for Nolan true fans, the ones able to enjoy movies besides the ones that Nolan does. It was addressed to those idiots that plagued these TBs the last days desperate because The Avengers revealed itself a critic and public success. This remark is for the no-lifers that wasted their time trolling this movie, the joyless scumbags that try very hard to hate a movie that's clearly one of the best movies this genre has offered, if not THE best. To those guys, here it is my big FUCK YOU. You lose, fucktards.

It's gonna make a billion and a half easy and it will have earned every dime. Joss and the cast hit it out of the park! Oh, and the people who whined about replacing Ed Norton with Mark Ruffalo are looking pretty silly now. The Hulk owned the movie largely because of Mr. Ruffalo.

STAY in the theaters. I have always wanted to see someone put something like that into one of these movies. And this was the PERFECT movie for it to finally happen. And the fact that they reunited the team JUST to make it happen was even better. Mad props to Whedon, Downey, and whoever all got together to make that last moment happen. Oh, and the movie's damn good fun, too ;)

Seen it four times now and noticed some things.
by the artist formerly known as messi
Seen it four times in the past week. Been waiting 16 years, I still can't believe it exists. Yes, it's awesome but still could have been better and I do feel even though it was $220 mil Marvel was still being cheap. In the final battle, apart from the scenes that take place in the air, the ground action is pretty small. They kept it cheap by keeping it to three areas connected to each other. The single continuous AVENGERS shot was awesome, no doubt, where everyone gets a chance to shine, tears actually welled up when Hulk and Thor were fighting side by side. This is what superheroes can do yet no one tried before because execs know jackshit. But yeah the shot is amazing because it's what I always dreamed of, in the comics you always see panels of teams taking out hundreds of people. Because they are superheroes and we finally got it. In truth this is the first true "comic book" movie where it showed the scope of what superheroes do. And also respecting the source at the same time. The other movies are too small and the only other true movie was Batman Begins. As a piece of cinema and adaptation of comic books, Batman Begins still comes out on top. It had the aspect of cinema and I didn't feel it could have been improved as a piece of art (and something like the microwave emitter doesn't make it a bad movie) , the tone, framing, pacing, narrative structure, characterization was perfect. Whereas Dark Knight threw away the tone and comic book elements and it just didn't work like Batman Begins. The Production design really bugs me as it's not Gotham anymore (which in batman Begins looked like it was ripped from a Detective COmics arc) instead it was just chicago. Avengers also still isn't quite there despite how fun it is. yes the first act isn't very good and is all over the place and could have been better. A massive culprit is the horrendous score. Just terrible. Alan Silvestri what the fuck?! You owned my life with back to the future and even your beowulf score was awesome but this was MOTHERFUCKING AVENGERS and that's the best you come up with? Hulk is awesome but after watching it four times, he's in it for only about 3-4 minutes! He should have said "Hulk Smash" or to endear the public more have a scene lke this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uM9qA_OnXXY where he saves a puppy and yelled out something like "Hulk SMASH big flying Snake" and then take the worm out. The audience and kids would love Hulk even more if he went out of his way to save a puppy from the flying worm and then pat the puppy after smashing the worm and the puppy then licks the Hulk. That's sentimental shit right there. Also the final battle isn't that long either, seems decent the first time but is quite short after you've seen it again. it's what bugs me about these business suit cunts "ohh now we realize there's more potential in having a heroic Hulk" fuck me. No shit dumb cunts. It's as if market research determined this. As awesome as it was to fully see Hulk, he should have been in it more and had actual dialogue "Captain America say help puny Avengers so Hulk Help!" Loki should have used his superpowers. Captain's helmet should have been designed like the one from Dark knight and maybe have a muscle suit under. but that doesn't take away from the movie. Black Widow was very out of place and I would have loved to see Giant Man and the Wasp in it. Again in regards to the awesome final battle, the threat isn't there. It hasn't got that Two Towers scale of epicness and dread promptly because the Chitauri(which were the skrulls in the ultimate comics) are just an army they needed for plot and they don't do anything. They don't kill anyone, they blow stuff up and that's it. There's no dread. They aren't well designed either but they're an empty threat. I love moments of the Avengers just owning but I want to see why the villains are bad, I want to see them killing people and showing why they are a threat before being destroyed. Also with spy footage, there was an epic bit of Captain America and Thor fighting back to back continuously and I imagined it'd be this steadicam Hong Kong/Matrix Wide screen revolving shot but it wasn't, in fact the bit they did show was quite cheesy. Little things like Thor's costume still being not good enough, if you're going to do the Coipel design then DO THE COIPEL DESIGN. it bugs me because Concept art showed a full version of the Coipel design with chainmail legs and skirt covering and it looked awesome. Also shooting in 1:85:1 to appease widescreen monitors and LED TV's was fail. Widescreen gives you a psychological sense of epicness and if it was post converted it should have been shot on Film because IT LOOKS BETTER. Where Marvel goes from here, who knows. Thanos is a crazy move that I never would even imagine would come up in meetings. Regarding that, the Thanos scene should have been at the end of the movie so the audience can be introduced to him. Because he was behind everything and he should have gotten up and said something like "And court death I shall, for the Avengers will fall at the hands of Thanos" whatever, so people will be like "who the fuck is that?!" and go online and read about him and maybe read some comics. It just doesn't make sense to not have the majority of people see him as he was the actual big bad. As for a game changer, No. What it is, is a game straightener, meaning it put comic book movies where they should be. They SHOULD be this big. They SHOULD be this fun. They SHOULD have superheroes kicking ass. Nolan's Batman works for Batman but that tone does not work for Spider-man or Superman. This is how big and fun Spidey should be. This is not in the same league as Star Wars or Raiders because those are great pieces of art in all respects. You can't improve them. You can definitely improve Avengers.

In a word - YES - trust me everyone in the industry has heard the news. Directors, writers, everyone has a whole new level to break through. There was a glass ceiling to these movies and what they could do and be. Hell, I even thought there was a glass ceiling and this film? Well, I could hear glass shattering and it was f-ing sweet as hell. I felt like I was watching history being made. Have other films included fantasy elements and the like? Yes. Have they ever gone to this level of extreme balls-in-your-face fantasy? No. Hell, some of these camera angles I've never even seen a film attempt - just maybe Tintin and that was animated. And the one at the end? BEAT that. Whedon took up the mantle. He knew this was his make it or break it shot and - yeah - he's changed Hollywood. As a writer, I now see no limitations. I'm hoping this film will be a smash hit blockbuster success unlike anything we've ever seen before. Because if it is? Hollywood's going to be forever different. Not the fantasy elements, magic, etc. - but how much you can do in a film. Some of the things here, I've never seen before except for comic book panels. And those who know I'm over at WB? Well, EVERY OFFICE I've been in is STACKED / OVER-FLOWING with comic books that everyone looks to for inspiration on bringing something to life. And the bar has obviously been held back by the financiers. The big news now? I think the financiers are going to go "wow-ee! Alright, yeah, we want a complete crowd pleaser!" I've never gotten a fangasm in a theater before - this one? Wow. AVENGERS is a crowd-pleasing over money-pleasing film. As said, there was a glass ceiling in hollywood and as somebody out there. As a writer, and I'm sure plenty are going to feel the same - what we're doing isn't enough anymore. If we don't raise our bar to what we can show and what can be done -- we're gonna get left behind. The heart needs to improve. The character dynamics needs to improve. The SCOPE needs to improve. THE DARK NIGHT cemented dark and gritty. AVENGERS is going to cement what a spectacle should be and is. I literally felt like we left the silver age to enter into a new gold age. Probably not the only one too. And if the financiers see that? Get prepared for a new wave of filmmaking. Creative guys want those panels to come to life - as said comic books are a key source of inspiration - and now it's looking like we have something to wake the financiers up and remind us that there should never be a glass ceiling to what is possible in any terms. The scope of this film, especially towards the end, is bigger than anything I've ever seen before. As somebody said - a run of the mill superhero movie now? Can't be done. Everything needs to raise it's bar fully to comic book level. I also got the fear that audiences may not show up to average superhero films because their bar is just not high enough. On one hand MARVEL has revolutionized the industry in more ways than one - but now? It's up to them and everyone to keep the bar that high, because otherwise - unsure how anything can live up to it. Studio and creative execs want to go above ad beyond. And now I think the financiers will hopefully see that too. History has changed. Not the fantasy elements, I could see how some would jump to that, rather what sold that was the scope and that we've only seen things like this in comic books and animation which now looks like it can finally be done. We just can't hold back anymore. That glass ceiling? Is gone.

Being a Marvel fan since the 60's, and a working comic artist since the 80's, I looked forward to this sucker for ages. Although it wasn't the 10 I was hoping for, it was very FUN. Surprisingly, my favorite characters in order, were Hulk/Banner, Black Widow and Hawkeye. The score needed to be epic and was easily forgotten. The action rocked and was spread out pretty good. The plot was simple and the story had some holes here and there, but if my sold out, packed theatre is any indication of this suckers power, it will make coin. Ruffalo Hulk rules!!!

It was really fun to grasp the references to the previous movies leading up to the Avengers and see how the characters would adjust to one another, work, and fight with each other. The comedy was great, the destruction was crazy and the actors were phenomenal. The score was not memorable. That is my only complaint. Where is the theme song I whistle as I drive home after watching? Music can make a movie droves better and I feel that it was lacking an identity. Not gonna detract from my 9.5 outa 10 score though. Please make more! Thank you sir may I have another...

As a Marvelite since boyhood, I can't exactly be objective, but to hell with objectivity, this film is delicious candy. All the characters were on form, Whedon's ability to handle set pieces has grown by leaps and bounds, the performances were just right, and every time the film threatened to become ponderous, there was a great joke to deflate it (Stark calling out the SHIELD agent who was secretly playing Galaga at his station just slayed me). More like this, please.

Anyone else here love the living FUCK out of Ruffalo's tour-de-force channeling of Bill Bixby's tv show Banner in this movie?
by axelfoley
I know people are fucking dumb and will ignore this. But I thought it was great. And no it doesn't mean I'm smarter. I'm not.
-
I think they are both magnificent scores, amongst my favorites (Ive always got begins playing in the car)
-
but quite alot to process, i will have to see it again tomorrow!!! however i will see that it was expertly acted and the cast had fantastic chemistry. i really felt like i was watching a marvel comic brought to life. hats off to joss. fucking beautiful job.

Is Nolan's reign over? TDKR the underdog?

i fucking love mark ruffalo.

That was what they filmed, that they were talking about.. That fucking movie was golden all the way. Haters can hate and trollers can troll, but Marvel just hit the jackpot. fucking Hulk Smash. If anyone is a god its Ruffalo, guy was totally awesome. Puny God, L O fucking L. That alone was worth 20 dollars.

...it is the team eating Shawarma silently in a burned out restaurant (in reference to Tony Stark's earlier request). The hilarious thing about this is that the rest of the world know this food as a 'kebab'. (especially in the UK where it's a after-party still drunk food), so it actually would've been twice as funny if we'd seen it here in the UK. Oh well!
-
Seriously??? I'm not a comic geek. But I sure know my superhero films. And this is not the best of them. I don't know why people are saying this is great. Heck, I love The Incredibles more than this film! That movie made me jump up and down. This one just made my ass numb for almost 3 hours! And Thanos (whoever he is) at the end of the credits? Why him? If it was Galactus I would've shit my pants! Or if they showed Spiderman instead, that would've been great! Or the Fantastic Four crossing over. But nooo... I really hate Hemsworth as Thor. He's too good-looking and meek. It should've been John Cena! As for Capt America, Chris evans is okay coz he's funny but I think John Cena would've been great as well! So, just what I thought, this movie sucked.
-
Is the delivery system useful only when you happen to have been tossed off the roof of a building?
-
...but it's NOT a great movie. It's a movie adaptation of a comic book series. Plenty of fun, but it's not going to change the way movies are made, or thought of. Nothing new to see here.

out of a movie with MANY great scenes, is between Hulk and Loki. Just when you're ready for a long, overblown speech from the villain, Hulk cuts to the quick and does what everyone in the theater wanted to do.

Cap dissapointed with U.S. direction was perfect, its one of the best things about the character. Sets things up nicely for Cap 2. Can't beleive people compar this to transformers, this looked like it had an actual screenplay.

All that alien town destructing carnage looks like it was drawn by him!!! My Cthulhu this movie was all sorts of fuckin' awesome!!

Remember Spielberg's War of the Worlds? Remember how easily the aliens were picking humans off through that whole film? Imagine the Avengers showed up right in the middle? What other films would be more awesome with Avengers in it?

It's obviously going to utilise elements of the Winter Soldier storyline. Bucky survived his train fall, found by some bad guys, brain washed, put in suspended animation and then let out every few years for a mission. When the baddies find out that Cap is back, they wake Bucky up and send him after him. People worry about post-Avengers movies so the key is to make them personal rather than world destroying. Iron-Man 3 looks to be going that way with Tony isolated from contact.

...where they showed everything leading up to the Avengers, and you'd think that after 12 hours of movies that we've all seen already that we'd all have been completely shot, but from the moment Avengers started til the moment it shwarma-ed me, my friends, and the whole theater went bananas screaming and cheering and laughing! Avengers hit every single beat perfectly.

Someone else said it best. This is not an "event" movie. Star Wars/Empire Strikes Back, Batman '89, Terminator 2, Titanic, Avatar, etc. were all EPICS and event movies. Don't get all "geek" and tell me when those weren't "event" movies because you'd be lying! This movie lacks an epic quality for some reason. Don't get me wrong. It was a quality film, but it is completely being over-hyped by a contingent of comic-book nerds, who have been waiting there entire lives to see these characters on a movie screen. The legal manuvering was done, the marketing was put in place, the universe was established, and the technology became available to help see a film like this become realized. Sans the Hulk, Marvel does not have access to their best properties. They have done a brilliant job over the last several years establishing their second-tier characters on film. I actually preferred the original Iron-Man and Thor to this movie. As everyone says, the best part of the film was the Hulk. His rendering was absolutely brilliant! The final battle was fun, but as far as city-wide destruction is concerned, Transformers did it last year and they did it better. There is nothing "game-changing" here! I am happy all those people who wasted their time with comic books growing up got the movie they were looking for. There is you guys and then there is the rest of the movie-going public. To the latter, I say save your movie for other films, such as The Hobbit, Prometheus, Gravity, and Skyfall! This movie lacks a certain substance! It is designed to appeal to a specific audience. The hope is that collective buzz will advance this thing through the marketplace. I hope and pray it stalls because comic movies need to go away. I guess the marketplace will make that determination. As far as Joss Whedon is concerned, the guy is still a hack. Everything he has ever touched has been over-rated. That's why when directors like Nolan and Aronofsky came along, they were allowed to advance through the ranks. I mean come on, since Buffy brought this guy out from under a rock, Ben Affleck has been able to re-establish himself as a highly sought after director. There's a reason Whedon's career has pertually stalled. Marvel did not want to pay a better and more competent director lots of money. Whedon was affordable, not the best person for the job. Another director, say Brad Bird or Cuaron, could have pushed this film into epic territory! The framework was laid out for a game-changer, but Marvel flinched! The fact that this movie is as good as it is says more about Marvel's prodcuction team, than it does about Whedon's abilities as a director. He was given an established universe and a brilliant assemble cast. All he had to do was manage the project put before him. Some of this film feels like it was shot for television. I really hope this guy's career stalls again. Too many potentially great films have been ruined over the years by hack directors, who lack the clout to override a studio, who use that awful shaky-cam technique, or don't take the time to interpret scripts properly. I would hate to see this guy be given more films. He is a hack along the lines of Bret Ratner and would just fuck it up! This is all my opinion and I am just offering a counter-attack to the lame fanboy hype machine. This movie is very hollow and in parts succombs to a very amateurish director's style. The actors are all very good and actually elevate the bland material at times. I live in Tampa, which is a pretty big metro area. I was in a packed theater with obvious comic-book nerds. I have no idea what happened where some of you were, but no one in my theater cheered, gave a round of applause, or laughed out of control. I think most of you are exaggerating.

I have seen it in 2 different theatres and the packed crowds have cheered and laughed out loud and given it clapping ovations at the end......The last time that happened to me, was 1989's Batman midnight preview. The movie is not a 10, but the most fun I have had in the theatre in a long time. 8 out of 10. I have to take off a few points for the simple story, and a weak score. RUFFALO'S HULK RULED!
-
It's not very good for some reason! Funny how Whedon haters can never actually define a reason. It's over rated! Or It's not very good for some reason! Equals The material is above me. I, frankly, couldn't understand it. Because I am a dipshit. And so I will blame Whedon.
-
...unfortunately there were 2 twenty something 'Mewling Quim' sitting next to me that WOULD NOT shut the fuck up. Asked them nicely...and after 30 more minutes, not so nicely to close their skulls. To be fair, there were a lot of great fan girls at the midnight screening, having a great time w/o damaging the experience for others. Loved the character work with Steve, Tony, Thor and surprisingly scarjo and ruffalo (neither of which I believed could make me care). Still think everything they did would only have been heightened by Blunt and Norton...but they got the job done. Sadly, Sam L's 'performance' felt too much like flat line reads. Wish he had invested in the 'character' of Fury more (layers Sam, please). Loved the way things escalated from conflict to conflict, and when the city battle kicks in... it felt at times like moving comic panels in a wonderful way! I can't wait to view that tracking sequence through the battle on slo-mo at home...amazing! ...and the 'after-after' credits scene (given all previous events) was a great bit of comic book catharsis for me. Laughed my ass off at how earned that moment was! Will see it at least 2 more times in the theater, loved it that much. What a time we live in.
-
A complete and utter sausagefest in the audience at my viewing. Don't think it will have sufficient female viewership to approach Dark Knight numbers.
-
.......Come on, let's be honest. What has Whedon ever really done up to this point? He is completely overrated. No one has ever given him a major project for a reason. Past news archives are littered with projects he could never get off the ground. He lacks a cinematic spark. You can't really put your finger on it. Everyone knows Whedon because of Buffy the Vampire slayer. Up until this point, that's all he had going for him. Since 1997, all of these other director's have continued to excel and reshape the landscape. Whedon hasn't been there. This movie will make a shitload of money and I am nervous that he will be given great projects to fuck up!
-
I heard that line differently. Not "I didn't know we had actually lost," but "they didn't tell me what we had lost." As in, the world changes. Maybe on the whole it's better, but you pay a price.

by vic twenty
And if it doesn't make a dime it is STILL better than we deserve. Dark Knight Rising might turn out to be a better "film", but it won't be nearly as much fun. Not possible. I don't laugh out loud too often, but there were some great moments in there. The Hulk vs. Loki showdown made everyone lose their collective shit. I saw a midnight showing and honestly thought there was no way I'd make it through the screening (I'm up at 5am every day). I was wired walking out of that theater at 3am. That running time blew right by. In fact, I was wishing there was more to see. Just a great experience, and I can't wait to take my kids and friends to this. I really can't wait to see this again. Whedon delivered the goods in a HUGE way. It is surprising about just how entertaining this thing is. Grinned like a damned fool for the last hour, hell I'm still smiling. Absolutely worth your time and money. 'Nuff said.

number9992@yahoo.com - SKYFALL WHAT THE FUCK? NO JAMES BOND MOVIE IS EPIC OR AN EVENT
by the artist formerly known as messi
Sorry but the only reason people like James Bond is cos he's cool and has gadgets and clothes. NO ONE REMEMBERS THE MOVIES. they remember bits and scenes but no one remembers the stories or consideres any of them to be art or pieces of cinema and definitely not event movies. When Bourne came out, Bond was a joke in comparison because the Bourne movies were actual movies, not scenes slapped together. And seriously the only reason Avatar was an event was cos of the technology, take it away and the movie is from the 90s. nothing special about it. The epic quality lacking from avengers was due to filming in 1:85:1 coincidentally the same ratio as Avatar but like I said, that wasn't an event movie either if you break it down. But also please don't say ths isn't an event movie cos of the context. This is fucking AVENGERS. the fact it exists is amazing. Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined that a movie would be announced let alone being able to see it more than twice.

to be Joss Whedon in a meeting just saying...hey, let's a play a joke on the fanboys that stay for post-credit stuff....what if we just film the team eating schwarma and saying NOTHING and they stay thru the credits for it! That would be awesome-funny! You know that's what that was.
-
It is. IT will bring in the money. Yes, it felt like only a beginning battle and not a war -- it was only one part of the world they were able to fight at -- however what makes it an event is: How this shows you can bring about characters, with their own individual series/films -- and make them work into something new, one which keeps their personas and without losing anything -- or without selling out to mere action (Freddy/Jason, AvP both failed here). That's what this brings to the experience and what will make it a pivotal change.

Plain and simple, unless they really make a wimpy version
-
Saw it in IMAX 3D last night at midnight with some buddies and was blown away. Every character was handled perfectly. It's even better if you've been keeping up with all the recent individual movies. Standout moments for me: - "Puny god..." <baddass walk away> - Chrysler building lightning rod - "I'm always angry" - HELL YES! - Hawkeye blind shot - Iron Man cluster bomb attack on portal Too many more to mention. Great movie! Will be seeing this again and waiting patiently for Dark Knight Rises!
-
I thought the film was great, and give it 8.5/10. My only issues: - Thor seemed to be underpowered as compared to his solo movie. - Thor vs. Hulk was way too short. Hopefully we get more of it next movie - Too much Black Widow. Her jumping onto a movie craft at 400 miles per hour? PLEASE! If Thor was underpowered, she was overpowered. - Weak enemies. I never once thought anyone on the team was was going to get hurt or killed - Why didn't Thor fly up to catch Tony as he was falling back to Earth? - Why did Hulk try to kill Widow, seemingly like he had no control over himself, but then he had complete control in the end? Didn't make sense to me Other than these things everything else was great! Hulk was awesome, Tony was witty, Cap was brave, loved it!

The movie had action, some drama and was serious because people were actually dying. But it was the comedy moments that too me out of the movie for a bit, they seemed to forced. I mean yeah Tony Stark was always one for the one liners but I think he over did it and even Thor got a couple in. Also I didn't like that one minute the Hulk is trying to kill the other Avengers then the next he's fighting beside them?? No transition or explanation!
-
Wasn't Loki causing the gang to argue via the spear?
-
Yes he was. That was inferred when Banner picked up the spear not even knowing it, which is why Loki wanted to get captured. Even Fury started to figure that out.
-
I know they don't have the rights -- now; but things can be worked out for FF/Daredevil -- and FF would work best with the Avengers, imo

Right. I caught that. They could have made it clearer for the not-so-bright, but it was there.

-
OK, I'm not trying to get on a soapbox here, so much as make an observation. One of the big laugh lines in the movie comes when Thor says of Loki, "He's adopted." I laughed, too. And yet...the way that Marvel has handled Loki as an adopted child is such a throwback. Loki is taken from a ravaged home by Odin who lies to him about his origins. Even though he's raised as Odin's son and Odin sees him that way, Loki knows that he is different. All the civilized upbringing of Asgard is of no avail, etc. When Loki responds with anger, it's because he is ungrateful and blind to all the love he has been shown. This is Asgard, this is the comic universe, these are gods, I get it. I laughed along with everyone else and I wouldn't want Marvel to kowtow to the PC police. Then again, this IS Marvel. This isn't the universe of tortured antiheroes brooding about existence. I have to admit I cringe a little bit thinking about an adopted kid sitting in the theater hearing that. It seemed a little smug, knowing, ironic, out of character, un-Marvelish.
-
There's something about "I'll manage people by lying to them" that makes me want to go "HULK SMASH". If there is one thing, just one thing, the US should have learned in the past decade, it's that lying to people to get them onside for a fight is WRONG. Also, that has to be one of the worst invasion plans ever: "hey, let's just swarm their skies over part of a city and randomly shoot civilian vehicles". I'm not exactly quivering in my boots over these aliens given that if SHIELD had just shot a nuke through the portal in the first place, you wouldn't have needed the heroes to repel it. It's so bad, I'm kind of hoping that it was deliberately a weak invasion. Aside from that, a nice character-driven romp in the park. Hulk definitely got the two best scenes in the whole thing (Hulk and Thor triumphant, Hulk vs Loki) - the audience couldn't stop laughing for a couple of minutes after each.
-
Seriously though, I still can't get over how perfect Avengers was. It actually felt like you were reading a comic book. From the dialoge, to the pacing, to the geeky Avenger vs. Avenger fights, to the villain (finally a villain who just wants to be a villain and does EVERYTHING a villain should do) to the battle in the end and even the cliffhanger last page pannel to make you salivate for more... Just PERFECT!!! This is what happens when Hollywood actually lets comic book people do a comic book movie with Hollywood money. Not a boofy director/producers vision of what a superhero movie should be. I love how the mind control didn't have the cliché "Yes Master..." dumbass slave, I loved the progression of the characters, and more importantly, I LOVE that we actually got KIRBY'S Hulk!!! Not Ang Lee's, or Ed Norton's version (Though I kinda missed Ed). My only complain has less to do about the movie and more about Hollywood politics, and that's the lack of Reed Richards in the movie. After all, They were looking for the best and greatest minds of the Marvel U to deal with the Cube, and hey, the Fantastic Four's M.O. is all about cosmic shit. All I know is that Marvel better get all their character movie rights ASAP, 'cause judging from the ending of the movie, they're gonna need a shit ton of more Avengers for the sequel. Speaking of ending... Just so you know, don't just leave after the initial credit ending, the American version has another amazing post credit ending that makes the movie just PERFECT!!! And a LOT of people missed out on it because they thought the first cliffhanger ending was it. SO STAY IN YOUR SEATS!!!
-
Yes, I think so. It was because they thought no one would oppose them. So weak, and that's why Thanos shows up at the end like that.
-
It will do well, and it should. But Harry Potter's record is safe. The closest it will come to being broken will be on July 20th, 2012.
-
Just saw it a bit ago & i freakin LOVED it & would be at a second showing right now if I didnt have work to do. For those who have complained about sequences that "drag"--that's called' "character development time". Remember--NOT everyone who sees this will have read the comics or have seen all the prequels IF you're gonna' like and/or care about the characters, you MUST take time to set up not just "who" they are, but then who they are in relation to each other and I think Whedon did a great job of that with those slower sequences. The Final battle is just off the hook crazy goodness & YES, in many cases the Hulk DOES "steal the show"--or at least, the scene. SPOILERS BELOW Odd that Thanos' hand looks human, while he is otherwise full on Thanos, but hey--it's a hand in need of a Gauntlet & we know where it is--in Odin's weapons vault. BRING ON the sequel!!
-
The first 90 mins were dull, the last hour was better. The friend I was with fell asleep and I rate it as a 3 out of 5. Hulk punching Thor after they'd wiped the place out was just fucking stupid but him owning Loki was hilarious I admit. Puny gods. Also, has anyone managed to come up with a good reason why Hulk was trying to kill Black Widow and then an hour later was working as part of the team and protecting her ?
-
Thor and Superman 2 (which is a fucking joke of a movie) better than batman begins? which is probably the only artistic comic book movie that is as true to the source and entertaining and mythic as shit

Fun Movie but nothing that will resinate like Original Star Wars or Superman...
by MST3KPIMP
Lot's of great moments and it's a minor miracle to pull this off but it sez alot that the Hulk is the most memorable thing since he is the most organic in a mostly tech-savy environment. It shows that people long for the human "or semi-human" element. This has perfectly setup Batman and even Spider-man as people will long for more emotional heft.
-
I'm talking as a piece of art. The framing, the composition, the relation to the music whilst also getting the characterization right, the tone. The 2nd act was pretty much an arc from detective comics. Batman crouching on the ledges, the brown hue. beautiful. And the pacing, the narrative structure. Brilliant. Superman 2 is a terrible movie which I loved as a kid but was shocked at how wtf it was. Super cellophane, what the fuck?
-
When Thanos appeared you could tell who was an uber nerd in the theater and who wasn't. The theater was packed, some folks were leaving, but I swear you could hear a collective, "NO FUCKING WAY!" I just can't believe how awesome it is to see Thanos, albeit for just a moment, in live action. I wonder if they're going to introduce Captain Marvel or Adam Warlock in the next films to set up the Infinity Gauntlet Saga which is sure to be where The Avengers 2 is headed.
-
Thanos is a Titan who doesn't just worship Death, he LOVES Death. In order to win Deaths favor, Thanos seeks out the Infinity Gems, also known as the Soul Gems. These six gem stones have the ability to control SPACE, TIME, SOUL, MIND, REALITY, and POWER. Wielding a gauntlet laden in these gems, Thanos then proceeds to kill everything in the universe until Death is pleased and returns his love. This is a condensed version of events. The Infinity Gauntlet Saga is epic in its scope. I don't see how they can do this story arc without introducing a few new characters. I imagine Thor 2 will be where we start seeing the set up to The Avengers 2, as Thor is the only character among the current Avengers cast most likely to encounter Adam Warlock, Captain Marvel, and the others who play a major role in the Infinity Saga.
-
His plan was pretty simple. Cause strife between the heroes and let the hulk go on a rampage and maybe kill a few of the avengers in the process. Why Hulk lost it on the helicarrier: 1) The first thing Loki looks at when he's captured is at Banner in the laboratory (his staff which emits GAMMA RADIATION is also there). You see Banner flinch for a moment. 2) When everybody is arguing you literally see them zooming in on the staff. The staff is resonating energy. 3) Banner finds out that Fury had lied to him. There using the tesseract to make weapons. The cage was made for him and he thinks they want to kill him. 4) All hell brakes loose and 1+2+3 = a very angry Hulk.
-
They first wanted to create a mele to attract the avengers in order to stage Loki's propaganda coup. Which is why they are just creating mayhem in NYC.
-
Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed the Avengers, but it feels like people who perhaps liked the first Iron Man, for being a grounded-in-reality-esque film are going to feel really overwhelmed by what they're watching. It feels like Whedon, early on, understood that the concept of a team-up movie would appear absurd for general audiences, and instead of spending time explaining the more absurd bits of the movie, he just embraced them: "Why practical reason exists for why the government would have an invisible flying aircraft carrier? Doesn't matter, just enjoy the movie." "How did a powerless Black Widow not get killed dozens of times during the final battle, and manage to grab onto an alien ship without dislocating her shoulders? Doesn't matter. Just shut up and watch the movie." "How did Bruce Banner conveniently find out where and when the final battle was taking place, and meet up with the rest of the team? Just shut the fuck up and watch the movie." "Of all the buildings in Manhattan, how did Loki's out-of-control cruiser manage to toss him directly onto Stark's patio? Shut up. Movie. Watch it." As a whole the movie is very good, but with all those logic-problems, it isn't going to win any Oscars.

The six of them sit in a diner, eating burgers and fries. For about two whole minutes. That's it. It was good in a "You got us" kind of way.
-
It's like Falafal, ish..... It's a throwback to when Stark wakes up, and in a moment of levity he asks if they can take the day off and get some shawarma; he doesn't know what it is, he just saw an ethnic restaurant a few blocks over and it sounds good.
-
But I need someone to 'splain the Banner off/on switch. He's always pissed which means he's always cognitively suppressing the Hulk. Did I get that right? Ready for Avengers 2 already.
-
Just saw it, FUCKING LOVED IT, my wife is pregnant and due in a week and I felt her doing somersalts in there... The Avengers nearly delivered my first child. HOWEVER... I'm sure others have mentioned this, but I did not like having the Hulk 'catch' spoiled by the trailer. They could have showed any number of other Hulk moments without ruining that. It was a much more pivotal moment than it appeared to be in the trailer, and knowing it didn't happen yet, I knew right away how IM is saved. But man... WHAT... A... RIDE. My only criticism, and it's extremely minor, would be that I think we need a more cohesive, threatening villain next time around. And Ruffalo's Banner/Hulk... HO-LY SHIT. The hype is justified, I did not expect half of the shit that I saw... I don't even understand how this was accomplished and didn't cost $500 million. Lastly - I think we need to start having 10-15 minute cameos from other Avengers in the individual films. Maybe we could have an Indiana Jones thing going on, where the movies all start with the ending of one adventure, and then the beginning of a solo adventure. Or even just a few moments of Avengers catch-up. Hulk should be sprinkled throughout all individual films too. Marvel needs to have all the rights in-house STAT. At least now, as the rights slowly trickle back, we know we've got 10-15 years of crossovers coming our way.

No way Thanos for next movie, they're probably building him up for the future
by the artist formerly known as messi
So many Avengers villains to get through first. Ultron and Kang the Conquerer being the most important. Thanos is like a 4 hour Marvel movie villain.

Areyounotentertained, They were eating Shoarma, which is what Iron Man was talking about when he almost died. Looks almost like a gyro. Awesome scene, because you know after that epic battle, they're going to chow and then pass out. thegoblinknightlex, I'm going to see it again tonight, and going to sneak into another showing when this one is over. So I'll be seeing it three times in just two days. I was there for the marathon, so I was hella tired by the time The Avengers started. I want to see it again all fresh and awake.
-
I wanted to just jump into the movie and live in that Universe. The end sequence that shows the CNN and the world reacting to the attack in NYC really gave the feeling that you're becoming part of this world, and then BAM, the movie ends. I didn't want it to end!
-
Best 12 dollars I've spent since nickel bags were just that. Joss has set the bar for the summer popcorn season. Wow.... Mind blown. 3d was worth it just to catch the spiderman trailer - call me intrigued, cause 3d made spiderman look amazing. Enjoy yall .... Even with the small issues folks have avengers is well worth the cost of admission.

Sorry I doubted you, Whedon. Just a fun, fantastic, well-shot movie. Far exceeded my expectations.
-
Remember kids--Thanos was first created in the mid 70's by Jim Starlin & was used in one issue of Iron man to then launch Starlin's classic & awesome to this day run on Captain Marvel, where Thanos FIRST used the Cosmic Cube (the Tesseract) to "become God" & then reappeared again in Starlin's equally classic Adam Warlock run where he used a fabricated version of AW's "soul gem" in an attempt to create mass death for his beloved Mistress. the reason i mention it is--IMO, these stories still hold up fantastically well, though are less grandious than the "Infinity" trilogy & they are ALL available in TPB or hardcover at Amazon or your comic shop
-
I don't know if anyone else was counting, but I was SHOCKED at how many fools got SKRAGGED in this movie! Hawkeye killed a ton of 'em but so does Cap and the Widow and etc... Hulk friggin' owned every scene he was in, and he was awesome, but the body count in this movie was waaaaay higher than I ever expected... LOVED every bit of it!

Ok, so there's a story going round that they had to add tons of screenings to every major location last night. Supposedly, the AMC on 42nd street started with 21 screens playing continuously, had a contingency to up it to 25, which they did, and The El Capitan in Hollywood has it going round the clock. Yet it's tracking only slightly higher than TDK and LESS than The Hunger Games? And Harry Potter part 2 grossed DOUBLE that amount in midnight screenings? Fucking really? Cause that makes it sound like every screen (not theater, SCREEN) in the country would have had to be full to make that kind of money. It just seems like for something like Hunger Games, the media inflates, and for something like this they pump up and pump up only to try and deflate it, and in an odd way I feel like there's an undercurrent of negativity to its potential success... like some want it to fail. The reason I'm saying this is because if this movie DOESN'T beat everything else, then I don't see why DC or any other studio would go, "Doh!", smack their head and start green lighting similar crossover projects or building out towards something like this years ahead of time as Marvel did. Why do that when you can keep pushing the next big tween novel to Hunger Games sized success with a lot less effort and ego involved? This needs to be a hit of such staggering proportions that it leads to unheard of barrels of money as Star Wars once did (THAT'S why it changed the game for Hollywood, because it changed perception of how much COULD be made).
-
Okay, obviously for comic fans and fans of the previous Marvel movies, this is must see stuff. The prospect alone of all these heroes in one movie has certainly given many geekgasms. Plus, Whedon is already a god in the minds of many geeks, so overreaction is all but guaranteed here. I think for a lot of people though, this is just another comic book movie - albeit a well done one. But it's really doesn't seem much different from last years X-Men: First Class, a movie that was also praised as one of the best comic book movies ever. The thing is, there's so much high-profile stuff coming out this summer. It's hard to classify these as events movie when the following week another huge movie comes out, stealing audiences and what not. I consider event films more along the lines of movies like LOTR, Avatar, Star Wars, etc. And to respond to a poster above who claimed Avatar was only an event movie because of technology, I'm sorry but your wrong. It definitely boasted technological advances, but ultimately that just contributed to make a movie and experience the likes of which no one had ever seen before. The majority of the people who saw didn't go just to see new technology.

there is a directors cut coming with 30 more mins of footage. The theatrical cut is fucking awesome. Stop bitching we got the movie we deserved and waited for and it delivered on it's promise above and beyond. This is what a Summer Blockbuster should look and feel like. It's an instant classic.
-
They have already intro'd a blue Kree CM & are introducing Adam Warlock, along with the Guardians of the Galaxy in the animated Avengers series on Disney XD. Granted, that's a FAR cry from doing a live action version & I dont think they can use the Kree or Skrulls due to F4 licensing issues, BUT-- a live action GOTG movie is also in the works, so who knows? Maybe by A3 we could get some Warlock & Guardians involvement &/or in the other flicks as you suggested. That would be amazing, just as seeing Thanos was in the mid credits clip & knowing he'll be back & (hopefully)next time--NOT in the shadows/behind the scenes. As some others have suggested--they could always have him go after Loki in Thor 2, but then Thor cannot defeat him alone, so...seems like an A2 set up to me

Move over the big 3 you have company: Casablanca, The Godfather, Citizen Kane and The Avengers. I'm pretty sure I just witnessed the greatest movie of all time, twice. And if you don't see the Avengers in 3D then don't tell me you've seen it. This film is a game changer.
-
So... what's the schedule? Is it Iron Man 3 > Thor 2 > Captain America 2 > Avengers 2? Is there room for Doctor Strange, Hulk and / or Ant Man or will they wait until after Avengers 2 assuming there won't be an Iron Man 4? I have a feeling Thanos will be the bad guy for Avengers 3. I could see the Ant-man movie leading into Avengers 2 with Ultron as the baddie (studios love techno-bad guys).
-
Just got back from watching it in IMAX 3D and although the 3D was not to Avatar levels it was really good and worth the money. I loved this movie on every level from character development, to amazing action to humor to pathos. And to those people complaining about the first half of the movie I say grow up. You need to take some time to develop the characters so you care about them otherwise you have a shitty Michael Bay movie all blast with no heart and the Avengers delivers both blast and heart. For the first time on the silver screen we get to see Hulk really let loose and he is completely amazing and his handling of Loki had people just screaming out with laughter, "puny god" hilarious. IM had better action scenes than in his own movies and all the characters get their moments to shine as well as do a great job of acting. But IM with that missle was dramatic, touching and just over the top incredible. Loved how they show that Cap, Hawk and BW are very human, get tired, get beat up but still step up and fight. All of the hero on hero fights were incredible and Hulk's punch on Thor during the last scenes was fucking hilarious.. They also delivered the dramatic moments well and am not ashamed to say I had tears running down my face a couple of times. The last 45 minutes was just non stop action but it was also well shot so I could see everything that was happening, every blow, every blast every impact. And although I really like the Nolan Batman movies I hate the way he films the action where you can barely see what is going on at all with his herky jerky camera usage. A quick aside here to address the people who are panning the film and I see them falling into two categories, first of all there are the Nolan fanatics who see any other superhero movie as a threat to Batman. They were going to trash this movie no matter what even if secretly they loved it they will trash it. The fact is guys that Batman isn't a superhero movie rather it is a wonderful crime drama based in gritty reality and while extremely well done there is no joy or humor in those movies at all and therefore in my mind not complete. Whereas the Avengers is truly a comic book brought to life beyond our geekiest expectations. Most of the critics who have panned it, and there are very few as with over 200 reviews in at RT there are maybe 15 bad reviews, some of these guys/gals just don't like action or superhero movies it is obviouis in the tone of the reviews and some of them see all of the other critics raving about it and go negative to be negative. Outside of the fanatic Nolanites it does surprise me to see people on this very geeky site who don't like it or say it has flaws. First of all every movie has flaws but any comic book geek, fantasy geek who doesn't love the heck out of this is not really a true geek or are just cyncial and negative about everything. The Avengers exceeded my high expectations and really just blew me away!!!!!!! I am so happy right now and will definitely be going to see this again a few more times. We got what we have been dreaming about the Avengers brought to life wtih clarity, depth and amazing action that made me feel like that twelve year old kid who just loved comics. Since I am 47 that was a great, great feeling. So it is awesome to see that not only critics but the vast majority of my fellow geeks love this film and it deserves to be loved and for those of you who say it is not an event movie you are fucking crazy. This will change and raise the bar for superhero movies and action movies because it is an action movie wtih heart, depth, humor, pathos and of course the best superhero action we have ever seen!!!!

I didn't quite catch that Loki was supposed to be influencing that argument, but i was ill and not entirely focused. But, thinking about it now, it does not make sense really. Loki tried using the staff on Iron-Man later on, at point blank range, and it had zero effect. So, one rule says it has to touch the person's heart or it doesn't work at all, the other says it can work at a distance? I can't recall, but didn't he also try to use it on Cap in the scene outside the opera house and it didn't work? Anyway, it is a bit crap to think that the whole scene of arguing was caused by the staff/Loki, it was far more interesting to think of the heroes arguing like regular people before sorting out their personal differences. The whole scene has now lost it's appeal to me now, it's ruined by the fact they say it was down to the staff/loki's uinfluence. I guess I was enjoying the scene so much, my mind did not want such a crappy plotpoint spoiling waht was the most intersting dramatic dynamic in the film, because now all the emotions were fake. In fact, it is a very weak, safe decision, as if to say, 'we can't take our heroes into murky areas of characterisation, they have to be flawless, they can't be seen to lose the rag like regular people.' Far less interesting, I am pissed now, thinking about it, bs. Honestly ruined a large part of the appeal of the whole movie for me now. They should have been genuine emotional reactions between the heroes.

The staff was on, glowing, showing it was influencing people, sort of like what happened in Star Trek "Day of the Dove." It didn't make them act or do what they did, but helped encourage elements from within to come out -- so it was real, the arguments were real, they were the extensions and exaggerations of what they were thinking/feeling. To control someone, to make them into a slave, required the touch. That is what Loki tried with Tony.

The villains: The film had no menacing villains….You need that in a superhero film…Didn’t learn from “TDK”?...The irony with the Avengers is that they went to great lengths to conceal who the villains were during the marketing campaign leading up to the release,..And yet when they finally released the film, it is still pretty much left in the dark...Not even the Avengers know who the “Chitari” are…The Chitari were in the movies for 3 minutes in the beginning and 30 minutes in the end..And I was left with no clue who they were? Why were their ships so organic? There was no development of them whatsoever…so their weight was minimal. Their defeat was completely luck and happenstance. “Nuke in the hole”? What a cop-out …It seems like SHEILD would have tried that option on their own without the Avengers…(Also very juvenile concept…man goes into hole…delivers load…man passes out)… Also because the movie has the Avengers fighting an army it is conveyed a e sense of being sporadic and disparate…..I never felt they were fighting as a team….It was random when they came together….Maybe if there was just one villain and they needed to combine their abilities to defeat it, the Avengers would have felt more like a team…Long tracking CGI shots does not make teamwork… Cheap tricks to keep get attention: Once again very pre-pubescent sexual analogies going on...I’m sure the Productions PA’s were giggling about it the whole shoot. All of the wise-cracking in the film was on par with “The Phantom Menace”…Same tone. Scar Jo’s brassiere scene? Followed soon after by the “hulking” out of Banner? He gets hot and bothered by the babe with the boobs…That is just an adolescent fantasy…and of course, then Scar Jo is scared but kind of … “likes” it…It is like inception..Planting a seed in little boy’s minds. The Avengers comic books tended to have a little more substance to them. I predict 7 to 8 year olds will retain this film for about one summer and then move on...And Hollywood will create the same marketing scam next summer…and as usual they won’t deliver….Maybe that is their strategy at this point, they fear you will leave them if you get what you want from their product…They just want to give you enough to keep you coming back while the pay-offs get higher…Only when and if they get desperate, will they start giving you something substantial…instead of the quick and easy. The film is a blow job. For masturbating to…Nothing that will stay with you. Reeked of studio politics: Why make a film about superheroes and never use their superhero names? …Scar Jo is never called “Black Widow”…Barton is never called “Hawkeye”...Why? They don’t say, “Hulk”...they call it the “other guy”….It is an annoying…And all the merchandising is otherwise...If the film existed in a vaccum you would have no idea who “Hawkeye” is… Downey’s sarcasm and his pillow talk with Pepper is given the most screen time (once again, to get laid)…And they make sure he is unmasked at any opportunity…Panderous and ponderous. Also too much Samuel Jackson…An hour of SHEILD was too much and very boring. Marvel doesn’t need to pander to studio racist agendas… Marvel already has a catalogue that is diverse with plenty of ethnic heroes without having to surrender roles to such BS. Hulk was the centerpiece of film: The whole hulk tease is just lazy writing…and he still doesn’t come off to me as a vicious, raging maniac….I have seen my mother with more rage than the Hulk had in this film. Also, as it has been mentioned before, Hulk’s reappearance at the final battle seems more like a continuity mistake than any sort of character development...(i.e. an actor is wearing a hat in one frame and in the next cut it has disappeared)…When the Hulk falls out of the Heliocarrier, he was being fired upon by SHIELD….and Banner was hating it for it’s ulterior agenda…After that, there is no scene where SHEILD makes any attempt to relocate him…But then he shows up a motorcycle and the Hulk is a team player all of a sudden…? WTF. Also If Loki was mind controlling the Avengers on the Heliocarrier, then why wasn’t he mind controlling all of the SHEILD agents? Made no sense. I’m not the only one. The film’s look: Very flat. At no point in the film did I not think it was men in costumes on a soundstage…Nothing stylized about it nor convincing. Still more to be said…

While they are founders and i still have some 70's ish comics where they play huge roles --they always kind of underwhelmed me. that said--you're correct that w/o Hank there's no Ultron, so... My thing is--to me, this was near perfection when it comes to a "team" movie. It's very hard to do it this well & the biggest mistake, IMO, is to use TOO many characters. So--YES, I'd love to see them referenced, maybe conference called or something like that to if for no other reason than to establish their presence and relation to the team. But-- Holy shit--William Bell (Leonard Nimoy) just re appeared on Fringe-- Anyway, as i was saying--i think this "mix" of 6 characters is "enough" as far as the 2 planned sequels that, i think?, all these guys are signed up for & if they feature other characters in cameos i agree that could be very cool, but I think movies can lose their way when they cram too much in. Rather than Ultron, I could easily see a 2 flick Thanos follow up--He could get the Cube in A2 & then The Infinity Gauntlet in A3, but hey, the classic Thanos stories remain among my favorites, so im pretty biased. But, if NOT Thanos, then yeah--Ultron could be epic, so you'd have to include Hank & Janet
-
Among many great elements of the movie is that it was full of surprises. Generally you don't have many surprises in a superhero movie because it's so formulaic. The Avengers had a formula too but it was remarkably dense with content, & full of lots of little surprises. Hulk ragdolling Loki, Hulk suckerpunching Thor, Hawkeye's arrows, poor Coulson getting off one last shot, Black Widow's deception of Loki, all of those Tony Stark jokes, & lots more. The Avengers was very well crafted, & I can't wait to see it again.
-
-Hawkeye's the world's greatest marksman, he should've taken out Fury & Maria Hill in that shootout during the 1st scene. 1 bullet each, boom headshot. -They gave everybody something great to do but I could've gotten down with more Captain America as a ring general. It was there, but only so much. -Fury had crates of newfangled cosmic cube rifles & shit, they should've used them on the aliens. -Physics, but fuck it, we'll do it live.
-
The second greatest superhero movie of all time and the best Marvel movie to date. I really can't believe how good this movie was. But some jerk kept taking pictures of the screen. If I would've been in a Drafthouse that wouldn't have been happening.
-
That was fun.
-
I think Hawkeye & BW would likely remain Avengers, but perhaps have cameos elsewhere--i could see them working w/ Cap because they are more like the soldiers he's used to working with. Of course, they could always bring Bucky in as the Winter Soldier, and that might make an interesting mix. But, i expect we'll see the return of the Red Skull as well as whatever current villain/villains they want to put him in league with As for some of the classic villains that are "lesser" but still cool, they could always show us a montage of newsclips-=like Stark? was watching near the end, I believe....showing the Avengers defeating a variety of foes. It could also serve as a "bridge" intro If they want to establish the idea that they have continued to work together between the "big" villain Avenger movies while & during the upcoming IM3, & the Thor & Cap 2's.
-
Where Thor just holds up the Tesseract to Loki in a lovingly, forgiving, and brotherly way, and Loki accepts it. That scene was the final patch in the movie for me. We all come from disfunctional families, as much as Shakepseare was right about it, but in the end, we're still family. The way that Thor just nudged at Loki, and Loki realizing Thor's love for him, was just beyond words.

Well--that idea would have to be on the order of a 6 hour movie, or so, but I'D GO SEE IT. I still have my doubts if we'll ever see Warner Bros be able to pull off a Justice League movie, but Marvel has certainly shown them the way if they are paying attention. That said, I love Nolan's take on Batman & he certainly wouldnt be much of a team player, so the reboot should be interesting & I may be one of the few who is excited about Zach Snyders take on Superman, so we'll see how that goes next year. The Avengers has certainly set the bar quite high for this type of flick

15 minute WWII intro; Cap and the Howling Commandos take out Zemo's chemical base in the Med. In the present Cap is sent by SHEILD to mop up the scientists and merc's(AIM) that were helping Loki. by hank henshaw
Shield had been unable to make those weapons work, or harness the cosmic cube's energy at all. My guess is that with Red Skull being into the occult he was able to do something the scientists at SHIELD were not capable of. At least that's what I think. As for the other, actual SHIELD tech, like the helicarrier, my guess is there are other incredible scientists that rival Stark's brilliance. Hank Pym, maybe?

whatevillurks, that Cap 2 idea works for me!
by Stereotypical Evil Archer
However, I'd rather a parallel story. Half in WWII, the other half in modern times. This would require a tight cohesive script to work. Each story is different, but somehow ties together in the end, not in a convenient way, but a dramatic action filled way. Alternating set pieces, some that require Cap's confidence in the past and some that require his out of time innocence. And a whole lot of punching and shield throwing!
-
Every movie has flaws but we are dealing with comic stuff here not a WWII doc. The transition scene where each character got to fire a shot that led a lead-in to another in the final Chithauri fight back to back was brilliant. I dont care about the Hulk Logic, I think Quint said it (not sure), Banner is still in there somewhere and Hulk kinda knows whats going on. Hulk just wanna SMASH! Thanos as the backdrop was awesome, I bought all the Infinity Gauntlet saga as it came out back in the day. Cant wait for any incarnation of this. Loki vs Hulk = FUCKING BOSS Jackson telling the Council their Ideas was Stupid Ass = Fucking Boss This is the pinnacle of epic, non -gritty storytelling. I still wonder how Cap got the line about 1 God and how he didnt dress like that......Makes sense with his time period...surprises me that the politically correct folks didnt jump all over that..very relevant to the character and his time period though. Probably the best film I've seen in the past 20 years that was comic book related and just well done.
-
... wasn't the Hulk punching Thor or any of the others previously mentioned. There is a quick scene of Iron Man flying low to the ground and passing the others fighting on the street. To me, that shot screamed "comic book panel" and it was GREAT! It's the little nuanced things that are selling this film. Everyone may not notice the minutia, but collectively, every small moment ended up being part of the overall vista of visual and audible delight that made the Avengers the best cinematic experience I've had in many years. By the way, I started collecting Avengers comics before the Beatles ever hit our shores. I collected DC and Marvel, so instead of blasting one film in bias of another, I am proclaiming 2012 as the most geektastic year on record. I loved The Avengers - and most of the films building up to it (sorry non-Ruffalo Hulks and IM2), but I am also looking forward to TDKR, Spider-Garfield, Prometheus, and to a lesser degree, The new Axe-man film with Honest Abe (I did enjoy the book a lot). Then, I will allow the entire film to form my opinion, rather than a critic, fanboy, troll, or (God forbid) a trailer or still pics. After all, the proof is in the pudding, not the recipe.
-
Had a human hand. Also loved the dialogue between Iron Man and Jervis. We he offers to call pepper really got to me.

All I can say is all you Whedon haters can SUCK IT BIG TIME!!!!!
by Tim Tringle
Anybody who complains about this movie, is no comic book fan. If you bitch about anything in this movie then you just have lost touch about what makes comic books and comic book movies fun. This movie has been almost universally acclaimed already, and it will probably break every record there is regarding movie revenue. And Joss Whedon is the cause people. Don't get me wrong All of the previous movies helped, but putting this monumental awesomeness on screen rested (and you damned know you haters would have blamed him if it sucked) on one man's shoulders. That's right the guy who made BTVS and FIREFLY just PWNED each and every one of your whiney little bitch asses. So eat crow and admit you were wrong for the past 2 years after hearing Whedon was directing it, or don't and be looked upon like the hating ignorant asshat you are. But now in the future when you try to spout your hate of the Whede, you'll have all the fans of this movie to counter your lone insane voice in the wilderness. Us over here who already knew of his genius, are all painting our faces blue and waving our genitals in your direction. SO SUCK IT!!!

Thanos=THE INFINITY GAUNTLET, THE MAN CALLED NOVA, ADAM WARLOCK AND DRAX THE DESTROYER
by Gus
I AM HOPING THAT MARVEL WILL BE ABLE TO BUY THE RIGHTS BACK FROM WHOEVER OWNS THE FANTASTIC FOUR FRANCHISE, LIKE THEY DID WITH THE HULK. ALSO, I THINK THAT WITH THE INFINITY GAUNTLET IT WILL INVOLVE HUNTING DOWN THE GEMS, WHICH MIGHT COINCIDE WITH IRON MAN AND WHATEVER SPIN THEY PUT ON THE MANDARIN, SIMILAR TO THE COSMIC CUBE IN CAPTAIN AMERICA AND THOR. JOSS WHEDON DID A WONDERFUL JOB. THE WRITING WAS WAY BETTER THAN I THOUGHT IT WAS GOING TO BE AND I LIKED THAT EACH CHARACTER HAD AWESOME LINES. IT FELT SPREAD AROUND, THUS DAMAGING LESS EGOS. A dozen classic scenes. Loved the part where stark changed into iron man as he dropped to he ground. Hulk was great. Hawkeye and Widow were surprisingly good. Not enough Thor and Captain though. I agree with others that the Hulk-Iron Man catch should have been left out of the trailers (spoiler).
by kevred
I figured it would just be in the flow of the battle, but it turns out to be the climax of the whole thing, the final moment of the entire battle, actually. Having that moment be something we've already seen as a casual throwaway moment in a trailer was a letdown. It was set up to provide a big emotional wallop, but seeing it first, now the reaction is just, "oh, so that's when it happens. Neat." Big mistake by the trailer-cutters. There were plenty of non-critical but cool-looking action moments not shown in the trailer that could have been used instead.

(Spoiler) The death that wasn't a death? And two possible clues.
by kevred
Well, it sure looked like Coulson died. The editing of his last interaction with Fury was choppy, but it looked like Fury was watching his last breaths. But, along with the astute observations by others here that Fury's trick with the cards was evidence of a manipulative streak that could easily have extended to opportunistically faking Coulson's death, there are two more things that make me think they're at least leaving the door open to him returning: 1) Fury's hasty assertion to everyone on the radio that the medics have already checked him out and declared his state. Sounded to me like, "don't bother coming to check on him, we've already decided for sure he's a goner", i.e., quickly shutting down potential visits from members of the team he wants to keep in the dark. Or, possibly, a coded message that told his SHIELD folks what was up (i.e., a trick), while leaving the rest to think Coulson was actually dead? 2) The lack of any funeral or memorial to the guy after the battle. Sure, he was just another agent among seemingly many who were killed, but he was the turning point that filled the heroes with anger and tipped them into banding together and Avenging. You'd think that would merit some kind of solemn moment after he was "avenged" - but nothing, not even a mention of him. Could have been cut for runtime, but odd for a corny film like this (and I mean that lovingly) to leave out the obvious moment unless there's a reason. Extending the conspiracy even further, could the whole trading-cards thing have been a ruse from the beginning? They pretty clearly saw Cap as the only potential leader of the group - that is, the only one who wasn't unstable - so why wouldn't Widow & Coulson set up Cap for being motivated by the extra gravity of Coulson's death? Maybe they had in mind some other staging of it, and Loki helped them along. None of this is probably true. Big blockbuster films like this pretty much always exist entirely at face value and don't come back with twists later on. But it's fun to speculate.
-

(Spoiler) I thought the scene where we first see the Hulk was cool for this reason:
by kevred
Because, for a few minutes, the film turned into a horror movie - an Alien-like monster movie. Widow alone in a dark maze of corridors, with this savage creature hunting her, and her looking just plain terrified, and barely surviving. That was a very cool touch, I thought. They could have just made it another action moment, with him smashing everything up. But they took a moment to pause the whole film, set up this slasher-film-type atmosphere, and play with this fun detour for a moment before returning to the main story. Moments like this won me over to the Widow's inclusion. The initial interrogation scene with her was stupid, a dumb pile of tired cliches, but apart from that they nailed the right way to present her - as someone extremely competent and skillful who was also completely overmatched, and who knew it and acted smartly accordingly. She was simply terrified of the Hulk, not blase at all about him. And even though she faked out Loki, she was shown later as being very shaken, traumatized by the encounter. Those moments are incredibly smart, because they manage to increase both the audience's esteem for her character, and the respect the audience has for the otherworldly power of the strongest heroes/villain. And they make her more sympathetically human. And, I have to say, Johansson pulled it off. Her coolness was more subdued than in the dopey Iron Man 2, and her human moments were well-acted. I expected to be exasperated by her presence but it worked out just fine.
-
May 5, 2012, 4:34 a.m. CST
Just making sure that someone here gives short-shorts Paltrow proper credit for being the hottest thing in the film.
by kevred
And I say that with full respect for the obviously very hot Johansson and Smulders, who we all knew were going to be so ahead of time. And their scenes were obviously shot to maximize that. But I didn't expect to see Paltrow so casually waltz into the film and turn in the most playfully sexy, flirty, and real moment in the film. Just as she did in the first IM film, she gave constantly-quipping Downey a real-feeling foil that added depth to the world he was being plucked from. It brought some real atmosphere from that first IM film into this one, and she acted it so naturally. Obviously YMMV on a topic like this one. But for me, holy moly, she was incredibly attractive.

My real big question -- if some are trying to accuse the Avengers
by HornOrSilk
Why aren't they at Stark Towers, since Tony has revealed he is Iron Man? And why aren't reporters going to him to ask about the Avengers?
-
May 5, 2012, 4:44 a.m. CST
@hornorsilk - I think they could have easily shoehorned it into the end, before they all split up.
by kevred
A small tweak of the flow of those last scenes would have made it possible, easy. And narrative flow was not exactly a strength of the film, you have to admit. So, as the film was presented - no obvious spot for it. But with a few tiny edits, they could do it. Heck, they could have had just Cap standing alone at his grave, before zooming off on his bike.
-
Well, I just think at the end they are just pumped they survived it all... and not thinking about those who died.. but I think in the next movies we will see the feelings of the Avengers about the deaths. It could even fit as an opening for a movie - Captain America II?
-

Anyone else think Joss Whedon wasn't the right director for this movie?
by eveelcapitalist
He's done like one other theatrical movie which was a continuation of his TV show, Firefly. He did a good enough job, but I think mostly the actors themselves directed themselves. It's like Joss Whedon's only job was figuring out where to put the camera. Might be sufficient for a TV director but not a director of theatrical films. The helicarrier action scene was caught up in extraneous crap that dragged it on interminably long. Iron Man trying to spin a fan? Who gives a fuck?!? Hawkeye as a villain? Come on! We don't know the guy from Adam and we're supposed to somehow give a shit that's he's been turned bad? Whatever. Props to Mark Ruffalo and Scarlett Johansson. I actually really enjoyed the movie overall. I think Joss Whedon made some poor decisions and it could have been a superior movie guided by more experienced hands but it is what it is and I still had a really fun time. I even saw it in 3D and that worked out suprisingly well. THat makes the third movie to be worth a shit in 3D, behind Coraline and Transformers: Dark Of The Moon. Thanos comes out at the end? DUDE! Sign me the fuck up for part two.
-
As I was reading all the positive reviews, I was asking myself where all the negative cunts were.. then suddenly they appeared.. hahaha.. gotta love the negative cunts!
-
The little team-up moves that popped up occasionally during the last battle. Unfortunately the only one I can think of off the top of my head was Stark bouncing some repulsor attack off Cap's shield. But it's that kind of thing you wish they did more of in the X-movies. Sure you had a fastball special, but I dunno, the way Cap defined the battle strategy is kind of how one would've expected Cyclops to act in the x movies.
-
You really think this movie is going to break box office records? I would be shocked if it even came close to putting up those numbers. I suppose it has a chance at making into the top 5, but the bottom line is it's a superhero movie. Regardless of how good it is, it immediately alienates viewers who don't care for the genre. And look at The Dark Knight...it was also a universally lauded film, that had even wider name recognition (and was a sequel). And to top it off, it featured one of the most iconic characters ever being portrayed by a recently deceased actor, and the curiosity/hype went through the roof. Now don't get me wrong, it did phenomenal box office numbers, yet it's still a stunning 230 million dollar short of Avatars record. Heck even on the worldwide front, no non-Cameron movie has even come close to breaking 2 billion (closest is 1.3), yet Avatar is almost at 3. I do think this will do very well, and if anything had a shot at challenging TDK for top superhero movie, this is it. Still though, the problem is that this summer has huge releases every week,m so it will be much tougher to retain audiences.

People are wanting the wrong kind of movie, if they are criticizing this
by HornOrSilk
Sure, I could have used more real "threat" at the final scene, having it a world wide event with hints that heroes elsewhere were fighting (that would have done quite a bit, and could have hinted at FF, Spider-Man, etc, without naming them). But outside of that, yes, it is not going to be Empire nor meant to be. It shouldn't be. They need people to like this grouping. Not go out in despair. I know many want them to do the Civil War. I think it should never be done on screen. Never. It would kill the movies. It works for comics, but not the screen. This is not the kind of series which should do dark like that. Some you do, some you don't. Know the material AND the medium combined.

-
This is what Xmen should have been. Weadon unapologetically embraces the apparent absurdity of the material without insulting it. All of the characters are in their authentic costumes and their respective powers are not toned down in the least bit. Singer thought that putting the Xmen in their costumes would look stupid therefore he chose leather costumes. They toned down the powers of all the Xmen and changed their stories, and placed them in [frick]ed up timelines. All those decisions resulted in a watered down version of the Xmen. Yes, even First Class is a watered down version of the Xmen universe. After watching Avengers, I challenge anyone to go back and watch that movie and not help but feel disappointed. I can only hope that studios view the Avengers as a template of how to do this genre correctly. If your embarrassed of the material, then you should not being taking it on.
-
Yeah, to me, this movie actually surpassed my expectations & I dont "get" what there is to be critical about--sure there is always room for improvement, but it's effin hard to do a team movie that works as well as this one does. And as for Civil War--agree--not only couldnt do it in a movie, but shouldnt I've seen a lot of "dream" postings about follow ups, where folks seem to be forgetting that those of US posting here are only part of the audience. The movies HAVE to work for the uninitiated, as well as the comic fans if they're gonna rock the box office. Isnt Thanos enough for chrissakes?

What a contrived pile of crap that story was. Heroes acted so wildly out of character, it was like a really bad What If...? story. No way it should ever be part of the movies. There are so many more interesting AVENGERS stories to be told, where they get to actually be *heroes*, as opposed to the unrecognizable prick that Tony Stark became in Civil War. We've now had the satisfaction of seeing the heavy hitters go at it in THIS movie (Hulk v. Thor, Iron Man v. Thor), there's just no need for Civil War. Give me Ultron, Kree-Skrull War, the Vision Saga... hell, give me Taskmaster or the Super-Adaptoid before Civil War!

Some of the big story lines in the comics work when you have a huge amount of comics to make -- but when you have a limited number of stories on screen, you will never get to the place where such stories will make sense or be attractive to the audience. Especially with an Avengers like comic (Batman maybe, because people now expect it to be dark, but Avengers? No way). I'm glad I'm not the only one who understands this

Surprisingly I enjoyed the standalone THOR, CAP and IRON MAN 1 movies more. Downsides: -Needed a big action set piece in the opening hour -Too many scenes of Nick Fury giving speeches and rounding everyone up -Dramatically didn't have as much of an arc as I expected On the plus side: -HULK and Ruffalo's performance, both solid -Scarlett, surprisingly decent -some funny lines (though I felt it could've used more of them) Good stuff -- but not the great, geektastic orgasm some are having over it.

Was trying to kill everyone in sight in his first scene...then suddenly part of the team later on? I saw the movie in 3d....liked it, but this was kind of a plot hole to me.

My ranking of the movies which led up to the Avengers with the Avengers
by HornOrSilk
Sorry people, Avengers has the edge as the best. It had to do more, and it did more. It had to find a way to get the group to work on screen and it did. That is much harder than it "looks." This gives it the edge. And the final fight, even if it isn't world-wide carnage, is still better than the finale of Iron Man and Thor. So I put it in this order: Avengers Iron Man Incredible Hulk Captain America Thor Iron Man II I don't see why people praise Thor so much; it was ok, but to me, much more generic than any of the other films.

Everyone was trying to fight everyone else. The Hulk's rage follows through with Banner's anger -- so when Banner is angry with Black Widow and others, so is Hulk. And Loki was influencing everyone to make them fight -- he even acknowledged this was his plan when talking to Tony at Stark Towers.

Best after credit-sequence ever! Read this if you didn't get it...
