I don't want to watch a video review

    by where_are_quints_hobbit_set_reports

I appreciate AICN innovating and trying new things, but can someone please summarize, in text, what this video contains?

Thanks for the feedback. I'll add more text to future video posts. I appreciate it.

    Cool Review.

    by Christian Sylvain

I prefer the less serious action films of Jason Statham, like Crank and Transporter 2, but it's nice to see him do something a little more respectable every now and then.

I agree with daddylongleg. The video review just reeks of You Tube amateurism and laziness. Not saying that you are either of these things, just saying that when I click on a review on this site and see this, those are the first two things that poped into my mind. Besides, if you start doing these, with Harry now doing the podcasts, he may start doing this as well. This is a really bad thing for two reasons. Reading Harry's reviews accomplishes two goals: 1) I'm sure there are a lot of English teachers out there who print up Harry's reviews to teach their students how embarrasing illiteracy is and how important grammar actually is; by emphasizing how bad the lack of it looks. 2) By reading Harry's reviews, we don't have to see him or look at him. This is a plus. That's all I'll say about that. You're gonna do it the way you want to do it, and like daddylongleg said, it is nice to see this site actually embrace the fact that technology has moved on since 1996. However, in my most humble opnion, I don't think the video review is the way to go or right for this site. If you really want to embrace change or improve the site on a technical level, they have this newfangled invention called an edit feature.

hopefully The Raid will inspire someone to pull back and shoot something I can actually see without me then having to buy the blu ray and watch in slow-mo.

    Agree on naysaying video reviews

    by Bass Ackwards

It's a stupid trend in general on the Internet, it infuriates me when I see a link to a news article and it ends up going to a video. Especially when I'm browsing on my phone. It's just such a clunky step backwards. Reading and commenting on written reviews is just more satisfying, video content always makes me feel like I'm being held captive.

I appreciate your feedback. I've never heard someone refer to watching web video as "being held captive," but I think I understand what you mean. Gives me a different perspective. Thanks.

Good review...I'll skip this since it has shaky cam fight scenes

    by Fritzlorrerains

Hate that shit so much . Please can u stop using that shit Hollywood?

  • I have a full understanding of the strengths and weakness of the movie without giving away a single thing and it wasn't just a snarky plot rehash and cinephile grand standing.
Great job, John. Great attitude, method, and execution.
Oh and I want to see this and I didn't before because you detailed the main difference between crappy action and great action: character depth and great writing.

While I think this video is really well done, I do prefer to read reviews. But whatever the medium, I'll continue to check out Mr. Ary's reviews. The content was perfect. It spoiled nothing and confirmed that I will probably enjoy this, despite some of the close-up fight scene incoherence, because I like character development and a reasonably decent story. It helped me decide whether to check this out in the theater, wait to rent, or skip it altogether, which is exactly what a review should do. Thanks.

    review method

    by dancetothebeatofthelivingdead

I was one of the people who originally complained about the video review and I just checked back in and it seems that I may have been misunderstood. A lot of you rose to the defense of Johnary. That's very, very impressive and Mr. Ary, you should be very proud of that as these TB's are usually nothing more than a bandwagon of hate and venom. Johnary, I also think your review was very good, clear, concise, spoiler-free, pot-driven, and very well written. It was not the review I was complaining about; it was the review method. You seem to be at about 50/50 with about half the people defending your video review and half the people disagrreing with the concept. I stand by my comment that I think it reeks of You Tube amaterism and laziness, but I also stand by the statement I made directly after making the first statement which is that I don't think that you are either of those two things, I just think that the video review itself as a medium is. I aslo agree with an above poster who stated that the video review makies them feel held captive. I don't understand how or why that statement is true, and can't describe the feeling any better than that other than the word trapped I guess. Maybe I've just seen way too much You Tube for my own good and the horrible talentless people who "perform" reviews by video on that site have completely soured me on the idea. You are one the better reviewers on this site, I know that's not saying much, but trust me, it is a compliment. Most of the reviews on this site are just straight hyperbole, perhaps compromised by making cetain people feel like they are actually in the mix, and very predictable. *coughcoughcoughHarrycoughcough* Capone's reviews are decent but just decent. Quint's reviews are great, but very few and far between. The Kid gets a lotta shit but he has improved and the jury's still out on him. Where the fuck is Massawyrm?????????????? Anyway, that went off on a tangent. I just wanted you to know that me personally, I was just talking about the concept of video reviews versus the far superior method of writng one and having us read your thoughts. I'm 35, maybe I'm finally getting old; I don't know. Anyway, you are a good reviewer, so keep up the good work. Maybe mix it up a little bit though considering half the people who commented on it wanted to read your reviews

I think I know what you are saying about a couple of things. When I first clicked on the play arrow, I felt sense of Youtube. But all in all, I liked it. I would watch the guy again.

    Thanks for the feedback

    by John Ary

I very much appreciate all of the feedback, both the negative and the positive. Over the next few weeks, I'll be posting several different kinds of videos to see what sticks and what sucks. It's a fun experiment for me and I thank you all for coming along on the ride.

Liked the reviewanthe reviewer--looking forward to seeing this one--I agree though that a little more text in the intro about what the vide contains would be welcome

    by BiggusDickus

Just my two cents worth, but I like this approach. However, perhaps adding a few bullet points below the vid just to sum up the main points for those too lazy to click? A couple of lines will do. If you make 'em interesting enough, they're gonna watch the vid anyway despite their reservations! Good luck!
