Sony Is Wasting No Time Prepping For THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2!!
The Kidd here...
We haven't seen whether Marc Webb was able to successfully reboot Spider-Man yet or if Andrew Garfield is the right fit for the suit or if the Lizard finally getting his moment in the villainous spotlight was done well yet, but Sony isn't wasting any time in making sure THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 is ready to go if Spidey finds success again this summer.
The Hollywood Reporter reports that Alex Kurtzman and Bob Orci (TRANSFORMERS, STAR TREK) have been tapped to pen the script for the Spidey sequel with an eye on having the follow-up lined up to head into production at the beginning of 2013 for a summer 2014 release date. James Vanderbilt, whose script for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN convinced Sony that they had the right project to move forward on when the plug was pulled on Raimi's SPIDER-MAN films, had already written a draft for the next chapter, but he's now off putting in work on WHITE HOUSE DOWN, creating the opening for Kurtzman and Orci to step in.
With the built-in fan base of Spider-Man, I have a hard time seeing this not come to fruition. I'm still not sold on this new vision for Spidey, but the money is going to ultimately be there, because this is Spider-Man. That'll be enough for a sequel to get the green light. Right now, we can only hope for the best (and I've got my fingers crossed, because it'd break my heart to see a subpar Spider-Man flick). If Webb has done something pretty good, then we won't have to wait long for the next one...

I hope when a sequel is inevidently made that they return to something that resembles the original suit instead of Red Power Ranger.

Gwen is gonna bite it in the 3rd one, no doubt, so to keep it in the ballpark the 2nd one should be, like, Kraven's Last Hunt
by Al
Just to keep the death & misery theme rolling along, Kraven's Last Hunt adaptation for the 2nd flick (featuring another baddie we haven't seen adapted yet. Hey, throw in Chamellion too for the hell of it) so the third movie is finally a Green Goblin redo and TOSS goes Gwen Stacy as portrayed by Emma Stone off the bridge and I cry a lot. Yay!

But it's WAY too soon for a remake.

And explain Cowboys and Aliens.
-
You make a big franchise film, you do a sequel in two years. Not like J.J. who makes Trek then waits FOUR YEARS FOR THE SEQUEL. Seriously, I've lost interest in the now middle-aged Kirk. What, one more move and then we'll have to get a younger cast? FOUR YEARS IS TOO FUCKING LONG BETWEEN MOVIES.
-
that's why I'm not going to see it.
-
the problem is the title didnt deliver what some audiences expected. either it should have been more fun, or we shoulda changed the title.

If Sony's history with Spider-Man is any indication, they've secretly hired ANOTHER screenwriter to write the script behind your back! That way, if they don't like what you're doing (like with what happened with Raimi), they'll just fall back on the cheaper option!

Actually I just re-read the Ultimate Spidey "Hollywood" arc, boborci do that!
by Al
In the arc, Sam Raimi and Ari Avad show up in New York to make a Spider-Man movie starring Tobey McGuire so the real Spider-Man shows up and gets really angry that they're making money off of him & then Doc Ock gets angrier that his ex-wife is making money off of him and he shows up to trash the place. Featuring "Bruce" as a crying actor who plays Mysterio. I'm not kidding, it's a great read. Wheels within wheels. Somebody adapt that arc, STAT.

The world peaked with Spidey 2 and it's been down hill ever since The rain-filled alley scene in Spidey 1 still gets my blood pumping, I fell in love that day and know I can't ever escape it, and don't want to.
-
I don't think we can blame Webb. Without even seeing the movie, I can tell you that if it sucks it isn't Mark Webb's fault, and if it's decent (or heaven forbid, great) then I applaud the guy for weathering the storm. But let's be honest. There's a reason they went with a young, sophomore filmmaker from the Indie world, and it's not for a fresh or hip perspective. Sony pictures is the real director of Amazing Spider-man.
-
Coz these guys did such a great job with Star Trek, right???
-
It just seems i've already seen this movie! I just hope for the sequel they bring in Mysterio.
-
raimi made a cartoon. a great cartoon. cartoon effects and camera angles and a more colorful/exaggerated canvas like burton's batman. it was the bridge movie franchise to get audiences involved. now they can take the subject more seriously - still with humor - but not have to make it look silly at times because they're afraid of treated the material with sincerity. tobey was good but not astounding (mostly just wide-eyed and dopey), and kirsten dunst was never that believable or magnetic to me. now you have a guy who actually looks like peter parker (with necessary acting cops), and this has a female lead with as much gravitas and charisma as margot kidder had in the superman movies. we'll see if webb can handle the effects, but i think it's going to surprise people.
-
This movie is going to suck my sweaty balls...seriously...the biggest waste of time and money ever...how 'bout taking some of the $$$ and feeding some poor people? Or buy some health insurance for a few thousand people who can't afford it...what a fucking waste...Sam Rami's next movie should be a short of his giant ass filling the heavens and taking a titanic dump on this re-boot...

Time for Hollywood to grwo some balls again.
-
Why don't we tell everyone that we're already working on a sequel? That way the audience thinks the film is too good to pass up! Let's try it with Green Lantern.
-
it's not like they are going to do a shot for shot remake or anything. Yeah Uncle Ben will die, he will get bit by the spider and discover his powers and stuff again...but I doubt it is going to seem as repetitive as some of you want it to be just so you can say "I told you so". If anything it looks interesting to see how they will play around with what we saw before cause I doubt he goes on a field trip and gets bitten while taking MJ's photo, chases down Ben's killer after the wrestling match, and says "it's you whose out gobby, out of your mind" or some stupid fucking shit like that
-
That's an interesting take on it. This isn't a straight comic adaptation like Raimis first (which i still rate, if only for the love given to it by the director) it's a new take on it, like Burtons Batman. We need a better Green Goblin for the sequel.
-
I agree. I'm betting that Webb is trying really hard to make this a decent film, since he has a lot on his plate and he knows that the whole world is expecting something great. This movie will surprise a lot of people.
-
Just because it's a superhero, doesn't mean it's gonna be a hit, Sony.

Her boring speeches and wise sage advice drove me insane and ruined all three. Don't give me any advice you stupid uneducated house wife. Not to mention Kirsten Dunst is ass ugly, Toby was a complete wuss as Parker, and the super hero gives up and then comes back when he realizes what is important is soooo played out it makes me sick. Fuck the first three, bring on hopefully some good ones.

The movie doesn't look bad at all but I still hold resentment towards Sony for being selfish with Spider-Man. We could of have Spider-Man in the Avengers.....SIGH
by Scottie Richardson
-
Obviously you cant get into specifics but how was the James Horner score? Is there a big heroic theme? Oh and what was the approx runtime? Cause I'd like it to be a big long epic origin unlike Raimis short Spiderman. I'm hoping Horner can deliver an awesome theme. Something that's been missing from superhero flicks of late. If you reply, thanks!
-
Make it so.
-
Especially on transformers 2. Michael Bay is the dude coming up with all the silly bits and these guys can't exctaly stop him from making changes to their script. And the first transformers was a ton of fun for a movie based on a cartoon/toy. Star Trek was good fun and so was most of Cowboys. You guys forget how much control directors have over a script. They can change things or cut scenes that have a huge impact. So chill out ladies and gents I'm sure they will deliver a good Spiderman script but it just depends on how the director interprets their script.
-
the spectacular spider-man
-
he should come back for every spiderman movie so everyone can get a chance to kill the mfer.
-
They put out a preemptive press release announcing that they're already prepping a sequel just to make it look like they have confidence in this shit sandwich. Not to do so would amplify the already bad buzz that is swirling around this pile of feces. They have nothing to lose by making an announcement like this, but it's just big talk at this point.
-
That's what this should be...Gwen Stacy nude and lots of stuff shooting from Spidey's...ahem...web shooter...
-
...I feel very optimistic that Webb nailed it. While there are things that some fan boys make bristle at in the film, I think this vision of Spidey will work. They showed about 12-15 minutes of footage and I was sold. While I enjoyed the hell out of SM 1 and 2, I never bought Dunst as MJ. Forget 3...what a train wreck of a film.

Haven't seen a post from him in a while ... I think the ban-hammer came down on him. Shame, he was quite funny. Anyway- I don't get why people are hating on this movie? Solid cast and director ... looks way less goofier than Raimi's vision. I am excited ... not Avengers or Dark Knight excited but very interested. Will be seeing theaters fo sho.
-
Sequel are the norm so this is no surprise. What vexes me is that the two hired writers have a lot yet to prove in my eyes and they shouldn't have got this job. Perhaps they lobbied for it and Sony bowed.

I want them to do it right and kill Gwen off in the second movie.
by freddofett
If they decide to make this a trilogy which most seem to be now. It'll be to sappy and not have the same impact if she dies in the third but if the Goblin were to kill her in the second one then you could have the third film have him dealing with the rage and guilt of her death.
-
until we get the real Spiderman. I'll wait. It'll happen.
-
I laughed at that reference above. That shit never sat well with me. That kinda crap just doesn't work well in live action. It's even WORSE when spoken in the effeminate voice of Toby MacGuire.
-
Raimi's trilogy was campy garbage. And people are finally starting to come around to that notion. I doubt this flick will be much either, but at least it probably won't be campy.
-
And other bits. Yes. Do that. Yeah, I know everyone thought that Stone would be MJ (actually, if you read up on it, even SHE did!) but she's gone back to blonde and seems like more of a geek that Gwen would be than the MJ sexpot. (Raimi made her more girl next door than party girl that she was) So, in my brain I'm thinkin either Mila Kunis with a red dye job for MJ or Ashley Greene. Do that. Go, go, go. And we better get an honest to god "Face it, tiger, you just hit the jackpot." this time around.

It did. Sorry. First draft had enjoyable stuff in it, but with every subsequent draft they took two steps back. The first draft contained NO ORIGIN STORY. None. Now it's ALL origin story. And everyone talking about "hey, Spidey actually has one-liners now." can breathe a sigh of relief because-no, wait, nevermind. The one-liners are absolute shit. Unless someone paid a joke writer to punch that shit up, those wisecracks will be terrible. For chrissakes, people, there's a Teen Wolf-esque basketball sequence. BASKETBALL SEQUENCE. How much more awful shite do you need to hear about? Emo douchenozzle whinebag Peter Parker? Or Gwen "I Know Peter's Secret From the First Movie" Stacey? Or Captain "Grr, stay away from my daughter, you fingerless glove douche" Stacey? It's awfulness. Pure, unadulterated awfulness.
-
... i saw those names. i'm more than willing to give the first webb film a break, but... spidey requires actual *character* development (his stories are really about peter parker), and so far, that has not proven to be their strong suit.

Despite what people may think of the quality of the film, let's get down to brass tax here: worldwide branding. you can't say it's this year's "Green Lantern" because, let's face it, nobody knows Green Lantern. Sorry haters, them's the facts. Iron Man or Burton's Batman probably come in tied for 2nd, with Dark Knight 3rd and Superman 4th. I don't know where the new Spider-Man will come in, but I can guarantee that an Orci-Kurtzman Spidey 2 will not break the top 10 "best" list.

Disney can get spidy back sooner than alot of people think..
by TheAwareness
if Sony's is embarrassed enough by this film,as in it makes some opening weekend "sucker" cash, but is mocked and panned as a result for most of its theatrical run ,its quite probable that disney could showing up in Sony,s current time of financial, need and bring spidy back to the stable.,Sonys film division(Columbia) may be on the chopping block after this summer, if MEN IN BLACK 3'S fails to make a nice dent gross wise, its budget is thru the roof,300+million, possibly Sony s John carter, and even worse, Sony s been under performing for the last two years. it will probably cost Disney an arm and a leg, but its definetley worth it in the long run (re-introduce spidy in avengers 2..it cant fail and it would be totaly bad ass.I keep thinking of Peter Parker walking into avengers mansion to "audition"to be on the team, with that great musical cue from ghostbusters when diana first walks into the fire house, awesome music by the way, Elmer Bernstein killed that movie. What do you guys think of Kevin fiege being approached to run Disney?,its not surprising, the guys a "Talent" for sure" ,i just hope jeph lobe doesnt step in to run take his place at marvel films, his work has been terrible in recent years Whedon would be a nice choice, but id rather he stick to film making
-
Yup. What's better than NY's best Mafioso. He could hire Villains by the truckload, he could add edge to Spidey without going all EMO like this trailer shows, and would actually be a formidable opponent because he has the money, the motive, and the man-power.

So many sincerely great moments that never fell forced, even hackman had some great stuff in there, and lets be honest ,the movie was great product of its time, Lex wasn't what he could have been too much buffoonery and not enough menace,,but that a small problem in a film that gets so much right, one of the few comic films were the origin is worth watching, where were not just waiting for the villain to show up to give the hero an excuse to use his powers, reeve's Clark was wonderful ,Lois interview with supes,John Williams i could go on and on.that move just bristles with love of the genre

Iger may like him, and see him as the more controllable, and disposable, candidate...but Ed Catmull and Lasseter are definitely gonna throw a roadblock up. Catmull is the obvious choice...a veteran familiar with Disney Animation and Pixar, knows the players, is respected in the industry, and is near the end of a damned distinguished career and thus won't interfere with what we are really talking about here....Who gets the DISNEY CEO Spot when Iger steps down in 2015. I can see Lasseter pushing Catmull (a key ally) into the spot to secure a path the the CEO spot. John Lasseter has his eye on that CEO position despite his lamentation he is a Film maker. Lasseter right now basically has final say on new projects in the parks, and is a key reason Ross was ousted...thought honestly he shoulda been gone months ago. Mark my words...Catmull or Lasseter will get the Job..unless there is a secret war I don't know about in Disney and Iger Cock Blocks them both. And Disney has the cash to snap up Sony...but it'd have to be at a fire sale price; Iger has been in an acquisition mood lately...so anything is possible...but I think it might take more than MIB3 flopping for that to happen.

Bob and Alex are into everything man, cool deal. And yes, the Green Goblin WILL eventually return. Dunno when but he will. And theres tons of other villains as well, The Hobbgoblin, the Jackel, Mysterio, Rhino so forth.

I really liked Raimi's first two Spidey films, but they're not movies I feel compelled to watch again. ASM looks like a perfectly decent (if unnecessary and ill-timed) summer movie.

I have a reeeeaaally bad feeling about this one.

How long will it be before popular blockbuster franchises have a string of would-be sequels in prep, all queued up like an assembly line, before the original hits the big screen? Of course in a sense they're doing that already with the Harry Potter, Hunger Games, and Twilight films, but at least with them the sequels are to already existing material, not brand-new stuff some poor sod is going to have to dream up from scratch and according to an accountant's deadline. In fact, you have to wonder how long it will be before Hollywood starts putting reboots as well as sequels into that kind of assembly-line prep. That way, if one of the would-be sequels flunks at the box office and ruins the current line, they can always pull out the reboot, dust it off, then rush it off to the mill, uh, production team?

A Spider-man movie aimed at illiterate 12 year old boys. Good move Sony. Can't wait to see that.

And I bet all the plants wish Nu Spidey had a Super Bowl spot and most viewed trailer on itunes behind it.... Would make their job easier.....

I'm serious that really bugs me. Plus all this pandering to tweens shit they're doing. Fuck this movie. Ice Age 4 will wreck this flick haha. I had no idea they even made 2 or 3 until I read that post above.
-
I mean, just look at their resume: The Legend of Zorro, Mission Impossible 3, The Island, Transformers, Star Trek, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Cowboys and Aliens... Wow, what an incredible list of genre classics!!
-
but there's no compelling reason to reboot Spider-Man (other than dreams of copious amounts of moolah). I expect big opening box office, then a perilously quick fall-off when people realize that they have seen it all before. Including The Lizard, who is perhaps the worse villain to choose to relaunch a franchise. A second or third film, sure; a reboot, not so much.

kwisatz-star trek and mi3 were good. oh wait, abrahms directed both..... hmmm.

Why didn't they just use the recasts and make another sequel? People would have been all over a Part 4 instead of seeing an origin story that is only ten years old. That would have been akin to Chris Reeve saying no after part 3. Part 4 comes along, cheaper, different cast, no Brando, no Hackman yet they tell the same story over again! Foolish, but the film will probably do good bank.

Wow the guys who wrote the quality screenplays behind Transformers: revenge of the fallen, the Legend of Zorro and the Island!
by baronweazle
I can't fucking wait!! Sarcasm aside, why do these guys keep on getting jobs? I mean I like some of the films they've written. I'm even one of the few guys who actually loved Transformers 2(it had a bunch of robots hacking each other up. I'm a simple man. Don't judge me!) But even the ones I liked, I didn't like for their great screenplays. The only 2 films they've written that I think have decent screenplays are MI3 and Star Trek and you know JJ Abrams had some heavy input in those scripts.

j.b.m.a., basic math and some business experience can answer that question.
by conspiracy
I'll address this strictly as a businessman...I won't even address the "Hollywood" shit. $2,300,000,000.00 That ^ number is why you keep seeing these guys names pop up in connection with these types of properties. That is the rough Gross of the two TF films, MI3, and Trek. Like any business...if it makes you more money than it costs, it is generally considered a good investment. So long as their stuff makes $..they'll have jobs.

So they're keeping to Webb's Parker Parent Mystery then?
by Larry Sellers
He said that's going to be the thread running through his series, which I can only hope is as intriguing as he makes it out to be. I'm really, really curious about this movie. I have no idea of what to expect from it. Surprise flop like Green Lantern? Or surprise hit like X-Men First Class?
-

Unfortunately this could end up like the Star Wars prequels
by WINONA_RYDERS_PUSSY_JUICE
In that with the built-in audience it is flop-proof even though the movie is shitacular. This is what the studios are banking on by releasing this low budget nonsense. This looks about as good as The Incredible Hulk. Actually it doesn't even look that good.

Is it just me, or do you guys also feel less and less inclined to go to movie theaters?

it was still a decent flick. I mean the first half was pretty great. I loved the Harry vs. Spidey fight, loved the Gwen Stacy rescue. The initial meeting with Sandman, even the Black Costumed Spidey vs. Sandman. Absolutely loved Harry remembering and that fight between dark Spidey and Harry. Now the movie takes a nose dive with the Forced down Raimi's throat Venom inclusion. But even the final fight was decent. Just pissed me off that's all you get with Venom. And that they just shoe-horned him into a story he didn't belong. But it wasn't a bad movie just a rushed one that hurt it's quality.
-
I mean it's Spidey, my all time favorite character, so I may check it out. But my expectations are so LOW I just haven't seen anything that just gets me fired up to see this. And with the Avengers and The Dark Knight coming out, it's hard for me to care.

wcwlkr...This is the Cinematic equivalent to throwing Christians to Lions.
by conspiracy
Good or bad...it doesn't stand a chance. Avengers Dark Knight Rises Prometheus Honestly, who gives a shit about a Spiderman movie with a nobody cast and a guy directing whose biggest success was a Weezer Video. I'm all for breaking NEW talent...but you usually don't throw such untested ppl such a big fucking bone. This film is nothing but a business expense to keep the rights...or Webb has video of the Sony CEO with some Laotian Hookers and a Baby Elephant.
-

Yeah, but the Christians in this case stand toe-to-toe with the lions
by Al
Seriously, I know people like to pretend they're hollywood insiders who can predict box office future (and Evil Dead 2 geeks who are still butthurt from Raimi getting tossed even though the proof is clearly in the Spider-Man 3 pudding) But, okay, here's the truth of what will happen with this movie.... You ready? It's Spider-Man. It makes at least 600 million dollars worldwide. Because that's what a Spider can do. Deal with it.
-
I'm totally jazzed for Prometheus (with my enthusiasm waning slightly when it gets it's PG-13 rating) but we're looking at a bigger budget version of "Snakes on a Plane" here. Not in quality. but in internet buzz. And the moral of the past 7 years at the movies is that Internet Buzz Means Jack Shit. Spider-Man is a worldwide brand. And it crushes. Maybe not as big as Avengers & Dark Knight cuz the brand has been tarnished. But it's still. Y'know. Spider-Man. And it makes a lot of money. Once again, everybody shut up.
-
That just about sums it up , ya know? But if your hung up on the suit in amazing whats wrong with you?? Seriously, mechanical web shooters, Gwen, wisecracks, and more practical stunts, whats not to love about that!? Really, you cats are a hard bunch to please!!
-
People have seen lots of Spiderman...I've actually heard people groan when they see this things trailer...a few "again?"s; there comes a point when perhaps there is burnout on a franchise. It doesn't have a name..the marketing has been weak...people expect a lot from a Superhero film with the bar being raised by the Marvel crew and Nolan's Batman series, it isn't gonna be enough to just show some guy swinging through New York like in 02...people have already seen that...3 times. If they made a good story and the critics like it, and it can generate some good word of mouth...it might make your $600M combined; but if it gets savaged by the film reviewers, if it can't generate some positive buzz and get ppl interested where the trailers have not...it just might die a quick death. Nobody knows anything, and strange shit happens when i comes to what ppl like...;but lets just say I didn't buy any Sony stock yesterday, but I sure as fuck added more Disney.
-
April 26, 2012, 1:10 a.m. CST
A Spider-Man flick will never die a quick death. Too much brand recognition. That's like John Carter making a billion dollars. Not possible.
by Al
Now, yes, buy Disney stock & sell sell sell before May 4th... then buy Sony stock & sell before the movie opens. Yes, you've heard whispers and internet people complaining. You know what that matters in the real world when it comes to real life human beings lining up for a summer blockbuster? Somewhere between Jack & Shit. and Jack left town. It's Spider-Man. It makes a ton of money. There's no way in hell it'll be a bomb because it's Spider-Man. Murmurs and heresy & internets people bitching is just that ... absolutely meaningless.
