Guy Pearce In Final Talks To Join Downey & Co. For IRON MAN 3!

Published at: April 20, 2012, 4:17 p.m. CST

Beaks here...

Want another reason to be excited for the Shane Black-directed IRON MAN 3? Here goes: acocrding to Variety, Guy Pearce is in "final talks" to play geneticist Aldrich Killian.

The film is evidently based to some extent on Warren Ellis's six-issue "Extremis" run on the IRON MAN comic book. In that version of the story, Pearce's character invents some kind of nanotechnology that Tony Stark incorporates (I'd be more specific, but I haven't read an IRON MAN comic since 1988). Sounds cool. I'm just happy that a consistently great actor like Pearce is joining the likes of Robert Downey Jr., Don Cheadle and Sir Ben Kingsley.

IRON MAN 3 begins shooting in May, and will hit theaters on May 3rd, 2013.

Not long ago, a big movie took 3 years to produce. Granted, the first year was usually concept/script/casting, but still. The fact that this comes out exactly one year after production begins has me a little worried.

Guy Pierce and Tim Daly are indistinguishable.

No slam on either, they just look the damned same...like Francis Lawrence and Bradley Cooper.

    by Raggles Wimpole

Even consistently great actors make the occasional bad choice. I'm of course referring to the atrocities known as "The Time Machine" & "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert." But because he was in "Animal Kingdom," "Ravenous," "The Proposition" & "L.A. Confidential" all is forgiven. Oh, and "Prometheus" too. So yeah, Pearce is awesome.

agreed. The Proposition was an awesome small movie!

  • ...and not go back to the one-off Thor, Ironman, Capt A, standalones. I've enjoyed all the marvel studios films so far, but part of what made them cool was they were all building up to the Avengers. Now that the experiment has paid off and the Avengers is almost out, it just feels like a step backwards to go back to Iron man 3, thor 2, etc. Maybe that's just me Having said all that, Shane Black is great, the cast for this is shaping up nicely so I'm hopeful it will be good. But then I think I'm the only one who prefers Ironman2 to Ironman1

Of course is still Guy's best movie by miles. When i read this news I was hoping he'd be a super-villain or someone with a bit more meat to their character..not some nerdy scientist :-( unless anyone knows something I don't ?

  • I love Guy Pearce, and I'm glad to see his stock rising again. With Shane Black doing Iron Man 3, and Guy Pearce joining the cast, I believe this is going to be EPIC. It certainly has to be better than that horrible 2nd movie.

Iron Man 2 was terrible but the first was great

    by theyreflockingthisway

I was especially confused with new actor who played War Machine. He looked and acted to different to the original actor that I wasn't even sure it was his replacement or someone new until his second scene. I also hated the battles at the race track and at the party. It was just like they said "wouldn't it be cool if Iron Man fights on a race track and then he can fight War Machine whilst we have cool music playing at a party". It was just so set up - didn't feel natural. Especially how everyone evacuates except the DJ ... On the other hand, the first film is just fantastic. Considering Iron Man was seen as a lesser super hero before the film, it did a tremendous job as he's now seen as one of the most popular.

Guy Pearce has the necessary "cool" factor to compete with RDJ.

    by sweeneydave

Maybe even knock Tony Stark off his high horse and humble him a bit. With Stark's charisma being his greatest asset, we need a villain who will win over the people. Vanko showed the world that Stark can bleed, but he was still just a villain that the world needed Iron Man to beat. Hammer could never get higher than chasing Stark's shadow. Stane was a great villain (almost successfully gaining Stark Industries) before he became brute force "Iron Monger". We need a golden god for the people to replace Stark. Someone who must be defeated on multiple levels. Just my thoughts.

    atomike2: Film Turn-Around Time

    by Munro Kelly

I would only worry if the script hasn't been written yet. Hollywood can easily do most films in that time period. Ghostbusters was done in exactly one year, from greenlight to release. I doubt this film will need more than 12 to 16 weeks to shoot. They'll have a 2nd unit helping and maybe a 3rd, if they feel they need it. Digital post production has sped up the process dramatically. Editing of picture and sound is a much faster, compact procedure. The process used to be so labor intensive and organization and keeping track of all the pieces of picture and sound was crucial. Now, a handful of people can do it at home, on the beach or on a plane. Visual Effects is much easier to deal with today. When the optical printer was the hub of vfx, the process needed a lot of lead time and very few facilities were good at it. When we go on the internet, teenagers are turning out Hollywood quality vfx. It's real easy for productions to throw bodies on a job, to complete it on time.

    A bit soon for Extremis?

    by Bedknobs and Boomsticks

Any recent stuff in the books will most certainly make their way into the movies. The writers should test this by creating absolutely idiotic concepts. And we will probably still be stuck with Adi Granov Iron Man suit. You'd think there were no artists before him. I hate the way the tail wags the dog because of recent superhero movies, as well. Any new dull dull costume gets forced on the books, like that bro-friendly Hawkeye get-up.

  • April 20, 2012, 5:39 p.m. CST

isn't this a relatively minor role?

    by oisin5199

The bigger question is who will play Maya Hansen. I hope it's not one of those "Denise Richards as a nuclear scientist" actresses. No supermodels with glasses and hair up. Cast a substantial actress. But if they go the route I expect, Ben Kingsley is SO the Mandarin, but not the Bronze Age racial stereotype. Rather, the version in the Extremis story who is a smart and calculating businessman/scientist. Who just happens to model himself after Genghis Khan. You know it's going to happen - they even said that the movie will have a Chinese aspect. What better way to have Chinese villains in this day and age, than to go the economic/technology route.

    by Henry Fool

Guy Pearce (despite having a name that makes me want to reference the South Park episode, "Canada on Strike!") is one of the best actors in Austraillia (a country that seems to produce a lot of quality acting talent).<br /> <br /> L.A. Confidential, Memento and The Proposition are all on my top 50 list for my favorite films of all time. The guy is as talented at picking good projects as he is at the actual craft of acting. That's something that shouldn't be ignored. I think he could be a big star if given the right role.

  • Nothing wrong w/ cashing in while the irons hot. Don't get me wrong he's a brilliant actor I just don't think he's a leading man he must want to become. In order for him to play the main guy you're gonna have to cast the whole picture w/ shorter folks. It sounds like I don't like him but I do. I still think they should have switched the two characters in Holmes. Law and Robert played the wrong characters I think.

Years ago a major event movie having screenings would have had a ton of reader reviews coming in. Sad times for aintitcool.

    lol@banning me

    by Russell

I posted on here first earlier that Francis Lawrence is directing Catching Fire and I posted it on a few articles to point out how slow and behind AICN is. It's hilarious to me that pointing out the obvious got me banned. It's now 7:30PM EST and still no post about this news. I also said I don't give a fuck about the news but it's pretty sad that there's no post about it on here yet when it's been reported everywhere else and beforehand Billy the Twat was posting about the directors for Catching Fire that Lionsgate had on the shortlist. You can ban me all you want but i'll always come back and you banned me for no reason to begin with other than for me pointing out how behind and lazy this website is. I can't find the link right now but it's the recent article another TBer wrote about how out of date this site is and behind on news. He regulary criticizes Harry about his poor grammar and other lame shit about this website. I like coming here for the TBs and the other comments but to ban me over pointing out the ridiculous shortcoming that every single writer for this site is clearly aware of, is absurd. For Zod's sake, you posted about Dick Clark's death A DAY LATE. Still no post about Lawrence directing Catching Fire either.

    by Russell

Apparently the embargo on reviews for The Avengers has been lifted early because it comes out overseas next Wednesday. I also expected to see a lot of reader reviews on this site for it too. This along with no post about Francis Lawrence directing Catching Fire is really pathetic. Also Mickey Rourke and Rosario Dawson have been confirmed as returning for Sin City 2 and no post about that either. There's also a new Japanese trailer for The Bourne Legacy with a LOT of new footage and again no post about that on here either. AICN should seriously consider hiring someone to just check comingsoon.net and worstpreviews.com and joblo.com every day instead of whoever checks it every 3-5 days. Seriously.

The only reason I still return is for the tailbacks and some of the reviewers but even they seem to be slacking of late. Aintitcool used to be about not caring about embargoes. Avengers is frickin awesome. I'm sure Disney won't care if we're all waxing lyrical about it. I mean I saw the movie last night! They didn't tell me I couldn't write about it. Loads of reviews have run online. All the UK papers reviewed it today. Variety, Hollywood reporter etc have their reviews up. It's getting pathetic. The final 45 minutes of Avengers is about the most awesome geek nirvana ever put on screen. Harry and co should be going gaga hyping it up.

    by gary_buseys_upper_half

I've never really understood why it gets shit on so much. Is it as good as the first? Not by a mile, but there's some great stuff in it - the racetrack scene was pretty thrilling, Don Cheadle was an upgrade over whats-'s-name, granted Rockwell was underused and Rourke was miscast, but still it was fun and way better than Thor and on par with Captain America.

I'm not a fan of the books and I saw the movie after sneaking into it after I paid for 21 Jump Street, but this is clearly a major story and no post about it as of 8:15PM EST where I am. by Rebel Scumb

I remember at the time Nolan first got attached, before Bale was cast. There was an interview with Guy Pearce where people asked if he would be playing batman, and he said he had no interest in appearing in any superhero/comicbook movies, but that if he did, it would only be for Christopher Nolan, but that it just didn't interest him as a genre. Obviously that's changed since he's now going to be in Ironman, but it seems pretty clear that back than that even if Nolan had offered Batman begins to Pearce, he would have turned it down, or so he says anyways.

    I like both Iron Man's

    by darthvedder81

I'm in a weird minority that thinks Part 1 is slightly overrated and Part 2 is slightly underrated but they are both good fun. They are action/superhero movies that don't take themselves all broodingly serious but also aren't stupid or campy. That's a rare thing in motion pictures these days which is why Shane "Lethal Weapon" Black is a great choice to take over the franchise.

  • April 21, 2012, 1:33 a.m. CST

Okay, NOW I'm really starting to give a shit about IM3!

    by DarkHawke

The Extremis storyline was BAD-ASS! Warren Ellis is one of the very few super-high profile comic writers who truly does deserve his hype, and he delivered in spades with this one. The art was fantastic as well. It'll take some doing to get a fully satisfying movie out of it, but I think Mr. Lethal Weapon can get the job done. I suddenly have some VERY high hopes for this one!

  • April 21, 2012, 2:30 a.m. CST

I'm down with all of this... Especially a modern Mandarin

    by Andrew Coleman

I have a lot of faith in this. Sad they won't use the set up Iron Man 1 did for Mandarin with the "Ten Rings". Still the idea of a modern and non-racist Mandarin could easily work. I just don't get why evil nanotechnology is fine but magic rings are somehow too much. Audiences are not fucking morons they will be able to accept magic rings in a super hero movie. I don't hate Iron Man 2. I understand why it is what it is. They went in without a script. Marvel obviously had serious influence since it was mainly all Avengers build up. I liked Whiplash actually it was Hammer that was used horribly. They needed a balance of having a rich/smart villain with the muscle of Whiplash. Instead they made him a goofy idiot. Still the movie had some bright spots and shouldn't be blindly dismissed.

what do you want people say about Iron Man 2 besides the obvious and what they say about any bad movie? Poor plot, dialogue, and characterization. But I agree that Iron Man 1 is way overrated.

I have some faith in Black to remove the stench of Iron Man 2

    by papabendi

Am I the only one who was glas to see Favreau leave? He did a great job introducing the franchise and getting Downey Jnr on board, but he clearly said everything he needed to about Iron Man in that film. Iron Man 2 was just a re-tread without the fun. The fun of the first film was how they established Stark and the set up in general. We were familiar with Stark and the dynamics of how he worked with the people he did by the second film. They also shoe-horned in another sub-Iron Man foe, involved in another corperate battle story line. Zzzzzzzzzz. That's getting like the Superman films and Lex Luther's real estate scams. It's time to take Stark and Iron Man into new territory, and Favreau had to go to get that.

Not sure how Extremis will work

    by Brigon

A fair chunk of the story was retelling Tony's origins, to update it from Vietnam to Afghanistan. Pepper wasn't in the story heavily so I can only assume they will add some tension between Pepper and Maya. Why is Kingsley playing the villain? Surely he is a better fit for the Mandarin.

Iron man 2 (I'm also in the minority who likes it)

    by Rebel Scumb

It has a great cast, all of whom are just given the ball and allowed to run with it. The only two criticisms I have are: -Not much of a climax -It's more effective as a Tony Stark comedy, than as an Ironman action movie But those two things are equally, if not more true of Ironman1 That's why i don't understand the hate for Ironman2, it's just more of the same of what was in the first film, except with a bigger budget plus: Mickey Rourke, Scarjo, Rockwell, Slatterly, Sam Jackson, Larry Sanders & Don Cheadle all joining Downey to chew the scenery. The first film handles the origin well, and I'm not saying it's not a good movie in and of itself, but I think people have a pretty disproportiate love of the first film and hatred of the second Actually of the Marvel studios films to date, I probably rank Ironman1 near the bottom of the list for me. I think they are all mostly on par with each other, but having rewatched 1 & 2 recently, I stand by my stance of 2 being a more enjoyable movie (for me) than 1.

Don't forget Gwenith Paltrow! She a damn good actress!

    by kbarber29

  • I'm not sure I'm thrilled about that.

  • The central problem for me was the conflict. I thought Whiplash was a weak villian. The concept started strong with his motivation for revenge for his father, and he was a nice gritty/blue collar mirror image to Tony Stark's slick, rich playboy, but after their first (admittedly cool) confrontation, they had very little screen time together until the climax. In the middle of the film, Whiplash becomes such a limp and sympathetic character that he loses his threatening edge. Mickey Rourke is good, but he isn't given much to do. The big letdown was the climax itself. There needs to be some human conflict to make it interesting. In the first film, it was two guys in big robot suits duking it out, but the film never lost site of the PEOPLE in the suits. In "Iron Man 2," it's just two guys in armor fighting a bunch of non-entity drones. Boring. It might have just as well been "Transformers." When Whiplash finally does show up, the fight is over in seconds. Another issue, for me, was the replacement of the Rhodey role with Don Cheadle, who fans cheered on as an "upgrade," but the result was an actor sleepwalking through the role who did nothing Terrence Howard couldn't have done. The rapport built by Downey Jr. and Howard in the first film was lost, and this was compounded by the subplot that immediately forces a rift in their relationship before we care about the new chemistry. Tony Stark truely went on an arc of self discovery in the first film, but in "Iron Man 2" he's pretty much the same guy at the begining and end of the film. "Iron Man 2" is entertaining enough while I sit and watch it, but when the credits roll I'm left with a hollow feeling. It's rather empty compared to the first film which had much richer themes and inner/outer conflicts. It's just a bunch of robots fighting

  • More action hero stuff please!

    by Pipple

I can't believe people are saying the first two are good, but I've been online long enough to know that there's always somebody out there who thinks differently, so whatever. But it should have been better than what we got. I liken them to the daredevil movie, serviceable but no where near what it could have been. This movie needs to lose the mtv bullshit and take iron man seriously, like superman the movie took superman.

I appreciate you sharing your thoughts on IM2, and it's one of the first times I've really seen it thoughtfully and evenly criticized. I don't really disagree with anything you said, it's more just that I felt the same issues were (for the most part) true of the first film as well. In both cases the fun factor and mainly cast charmisma was enough for it to elevate the material for me and enjoy. I do absolutely agree that neither film has anything remotely approaching an exciting or satisfying climax.

    by Immortal_Fish

Guy Pearce would have been an awesome Matt Murdock. He has the perfect jawline for a superhero and I can picture his stubbly chin under the red cowl perfectly. I know Evans has proven that an actor can pull off playing more than one Marvel character, and extremely WELL at that. But let's face it, once you've played one, it's pretty rare you'll have opportunity to play another. Yeah, Pearce is short. So? USE THAT as another character flaw. These guys don't all have to be over six feet tall.

  • April 21, 2012, 5:06 p.m. CST

    Cheadle was a shitty Rhodey

    by Russell

and he should be replaced. He sleepwalked through the role and Terence Howard was much better. Marvel and Avi Arad or whoever should have just paid him what he was asking to have him in IM 2 and 3. I like Don Cheadle as an actor in the right part for him like Boogie Nights and Hotel Rwanda and other films but he was a terrible choice for Rhodey. Michael Jai White would have been my choice or possibly Taye Diggs for a replacement but definitely not Don Cheadle.

  • I'm okay with him coming back, as long as they give him something to do, both in and out of the suit. And some memorable lines would be nice.

The truth about entitled talkbackers and trolls

    by Hey_Kobe_Tell_Me_How_My_Ass_Tastes

centers around those who think that just because they are allowed to post here or have been doing so since before such a thing called a smart phone existed - which allows them to post while taking a shit at the same time, or post their shit as such the case may be, then they are somehow entitled to being treated like fucking hands off royalty. furthermore such entitled fucks think they have the right to criticize anyone and everyone with impunity because afterfall harry is beholden to them and their daily hit counts for his income and fame which they deride constantly and threaten daily by saying they will never return because this place just aint what it used to be, but strangely enough they do return.news for all of them, if this site was mostly beholden on talkback hit counts it would have went belly up a long long long time ago. they will not believe me, even though the proof is on the posting page and can be found with a google search of site hit counts. they will continue to exist in their entitled little world because this place is important to them, they need this place far far more that it needs them. the d.vader banning of a year ago and subsequent moaning and bitching and screams of 'im never coming back' really did spell the doom of talkbacks and aicn. oh wait a minute, no it did not. the site miraculously kept going and the place was actually better off because all inbred trolls and their sock puppets stayed away until they realized how desperately they needed this place and how much it did not need them. that is the bullshit i rail against and why i heap scorn on choppah and his sock puppet echo chamber ilk and all the anti social trolls who would cry for years if this site truly went belly up. actually this site performs a public service keeping assholes like ctm and that pedophile conspiracy from the general public

I agree, Cheadle is a fantastic actor but he was a "shitty Rhodey"

    by ganymede3010

That should of cast Michael Ealy to assume the role, both him and Terrance Howard share similar anatomical features, so it would of been a seamless transition IMO. I really hope they replace Cheadle.

  • April 21, 2012, 9:43 p.m. CST

Absolutely correct. Cheadle is amazing, but they were just looking for a black body.

    by Grammaton Cleric Binks

They should have stuck with Howard. In the congressional hearing scene when Rhodes is called in he says something to Tony like "I'm here, deal with it." or get over it or something. An obvious Howard reference. Ugh. Also I never got the Iron Man 2 hate. However, one thing that did piss me off is if it is a Stark expo, what gave Rockwell the right to crash the party and give his presentation. There's suspension of disbelief, and then there's stupidity.

yes the two Iron Man movies aren't that good but look at worldwide box office for both. It's the same with Transformers 2 and 3...shit movies but people eat it up and billions for the studios. Blame the people who buy tickets.

  • It was way too short and in that fake looking garden area and contrary to what Jon Favreau may have thought, the drones flying around going apeshit was NOT the most exciting part of the 3rd act. The final battle obviously should have been but instead Stark and Rhodey did some piss-poor dopey and weird fatality on him with his whips and it was just poopy and lame. It should have been Tony being brutalized within an inch of his life or something like that. If Ben Kingsley is The Mandarian which is already weird to begin with, I hope he actually fights Iron Man in some way and it lasts longer than 2 minutes.

Rockwell and weak Whiplash were horrible!

    by Andrew Coleman

I really believe Rockwell's "villain" was what was really wrong with everything. Why do you make one of the main villain's a whimpy dumb ass? He never felt like a threat at all... They also set up Whiplash and everything really well and never used it. The scene where Stark essentially interview Whiplash was great. The end battle should have been brutal... Instead it lasted one second and you could have cared less. That was IM2 failure. Sure Iron Monger wasn't great in IM1 but Stane was menacing. He was a fucking prick and was one powerful dude. Whiplash was powerful for like one scene but then basically became Bane from Batman and Robin... Then you have Rockwell's character just being some butt hurt idiot with money... Was a horrible decision all around.

    EXTREMIS? Hmmmm

    by SHADOWPRIME

I enjoyed IRON MAN 2. Was it as good as the first? IMHO, no, it wasn't. The first IRON MAN was a rarity on a lot of counts - a genuinely interesting "origin" movie, a movie where the hero is as interesting out of costume as he is IN costume, and a movie where the hero and the villain are both compelling (thanks in large part to the actors, of course). IRON MAN 2 couldn't recapture all of that - not quite. Rockwell (and I like him as an actor) was a silly villain - he was presented as an incompetent, and thus, never a credible threat. I liked Rourke, I liked the Black Widow, and I thought the Iron Man/War Machine and racetrack action scenes were pretty well done. BUT...overall... it just didn't come together as well as the first, and the final "big" fight was a let-down. But the bomb some here like to assert? Not seeing that. As to EXTREMIS...hmmm. Not sold, entirely. I just recently watched the animated version on NETFLIX (worth it if you enjoy superheroes, BTW), and while it was interesting, it really radically changes the basic concept of who IRON MAN "is". SPOILERS - as somone else here noted, it takes Stark from being a "man in a suit" to something else... a super-sophisticated cyborg, who is physically tied into technology, whose mind is almost wired into a worldwide technological web. He can literally "see" through satellites, he is tied into the power grid, etc. It is a cool idea, but for me, that's just not Iron Man.

  • April 22, 2012, 2:08 p.m. CST

The concept of IM is that he is a guy in a robot suit.

    by Bedknobs and Boomsticks

They shouldn't make it any more complicated than that. Truth be told, the idea that he is a guy in a fighter jet suit takes it to an annoying place. The character looks better as an iron MAN, not Iron Adi Granov Maya Fighter Jet Man. He lost his iconic look.

  • April 22, 2012, 2:19 p.m. CST

Iron Man 2 wasn't that great

    by jellypop

Having Tony Stark at his party dressed in his suit was pretty awful and the rumble with War Machine that followed was just as dopey and ruined the movie for me. I couldn't swallow it. The addition of the Black Widow into the mix also jarred me because ScarJo just didn't have the acting chops IMO to play the character with the required 'guts' and come off as tough as she is meant to be. The fusion of the two villains that Rourke portrayed had so much scope but was reduced to that silly slam-bang end sequence in the garden. I would have enjoyed it more, I think if any other setting had been chosen for the pay-off. The flying drones were also a waste of time as the dedication spent by the character in putting them together should have resulted in damage/destruction that sould have been interesting to watch. It ended up looking like the Iron Giant taking on Disneyworld. However, with Guy Pearce joining IM3 I have renewed hope it won't suck.
