Japanese Trailer For AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Has A Little More New Footage!

Nordling here.

The more we anticipate this summer's releases, the more THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN has become something like The Little Engine That Could.  Sony's movie enters an already heavily saturated market, but I think the X-factor that makes this movie really compelling for me is Andrew Garfield.  I think he embodies Peter Parker from the footage I've seen, and he's the main reason why I'm really excited to see it.

Plus, unlike the Raimi Spider-Man films, which are perfectly fine, don't get me wrong - there's something about everything I've seen so far that really hearkens back to when I read the comics fanatically, back in the 1980s.  It feels straight out of the John Romita Jr. years, and for me that's great.  Anyway, here's the Japanese trailer, that doesn't have a whole lot of new footage, but opens up the story a little bit:

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN opens this summer.

Saw this before John Carter the other day...

    by AndoSoundsLikeAMong

I think the first opening day double bill ever in which the main character has been the same actor - John Carter and Battleship. It was kinda a headfuck, actually. Not sure two films starring the same actor would go head-to-head in many other territories... Rebooted Spidey is released almost first in the world over here, so I'll pretend that makes up for the +3 months I'll be waiting for Avengers and see it a day or two before you guys. Great.

I thought the Raimi movies were ok, but THIS is the Spider-Man movie I've wanted since I was a kid. Tobey Maguire was horribly miscast. Garfield looks like Peter Parker, and the fact that they've got him making wise-cracks... And Gwen Stacey? Come on... Search your feelings Spider-Man fans, this is it. This is going to be great. Bring it on.

    by seasider

Yes there has been a good deal of skepticism surrounding this movie in the media and internet blogs but with a $220 million budget this film is anything but "little." But the movie so far like it will at least be worth watching. Andrew Garfield is a decent actor but so far I have yet to be won over by his take on the character. He's just too brooding.

    by Robusto

On one hand this looks like a derivative cheap cash-in and strays so far away from the spirit of the universe it annoys me. On the other hand taking the character and making it a dark action movie with the main villian having a horror element feels kinda fresh and interesting... so confused. I guess it will come down to execution

  • I'm hoping I'm wrong, but nothing about this feels like Spider-man. There's a sense of fun and wonder at the core of Spider-man and Peter Parker (all versions) and everything I've seen about this doesn't have that core. It seems moody and depressing. And while Spidey often hits rough times, moody and depressing is NOT Spider-man.

I understand what they are doing now. They made this for the teens who liked "The Hunger Games". As a fan of the comics and Spider-man I dislike this a lot. But I can understand the Twilight crowd loving this. You can see that in some of the comments here already. My problems... Just doesn't feel like Spider-man it's obvious attempt to make this edgy with a dash of Twilight. All the action happening at night... IS NOT SPIDER-MAN. Period. They ruined The Lizard. So I will sneak into this and pay to see something else. Not giving this trash my money. I'll let the Twilight crowd do that instead.

Plenty of Spider-man comics have gotten way darker than any of these trailers have implied. The tone of this movie seems just right to me.

Let's be honest: Tobey Maguire wasn't that great.

    by Huey_Freemans_afro

He played Peter Parker as the biggest dweeb ever, which was not necessarily the character. He was also painfully unwitty as Spider-man. Maguire was like this every movie and we have Raimi to thank for that.

    by HaggisHunter

This looks to be the best yet! Mister Lizardman is my favourite Spidey bad guy! Anthony Hopkins has slimmed down for the part and it shows! He's brought a great lean, mean look to the role of Doc Conner. But what's up with Tobey Maguire's new hairstyle? He looks taller and older somehow, dunno how I feel about that, it kind of unsettles me. What does he do with all that hair when he puts the mask on? But I love the fact Kirsten Dunst has gone back to blonde from red, she looks great in this movie!!

I still don't understand the hate for Maguire. But then some of us had Nicholas Hammond as their Spider-Man back in the 70s and can still remember walking out of the cinema going "that wasn't very good". So some of us are forgiving, I guess. I like Garfield in the role, but don't need a re-imagining of the origin story. It's like Ang Lee's Hulk all over again. Just stop it. They've made Doctor Connors into an egomaniac monster, rather than a sympathetic character. And what's with the Aunt & Uncle? Awww, gawd. This is going to stink up the place, mark my words.

At this point, only Marvel should be allowed to make these...

    by SK229

I hated the Raimi films except for a few parts in the first one. I thought the second one was the biggest piece of shit I've ever seen, with incredibly overwrought (even for a comic book film) dialogue, awfully staged action, and bad effects. Didn't even see the third one. As a matter of fact, I enjoyed the Fantastic Four movies more. I know that's probably sacrilege, but what can I say? They felt more like comic books come to life to me. I love Batman Begins and TDK, but I still think the DESIGNS are kind of boring... think he could have had just a tad, A TAD more fun since it's a movie about a man dressing up as a bat to fight criminals called 'The Joker', Scarecrow, and Two-Face. The original Superman is, in my mind, the only super hero movie ever to get close to perfection for me. I honestly have liked all of Marvel's movies so far, INCLUDING Iron Man 2 and The Incredible Hulk because they feel like comic books come to life. They always have moments that give you that exhilaration of seeing these characters brought to life, and there's always a certain look and feel that I can't put into words, but it seems like they know what needs to be done and what the audience wants and they GIVE IT TO THEM, rather than overthinking everything. They're not the greatest films ever, but I don't think they need to be or should necessarily even try all the time, they should just try to be true to the character and the expectations of the audience. One big reason for this, I think, is that Marvel only has to worry about Marvel movies. Something like this is being made and overseen by executives who oversee ALL kinds of movies and they tend to bring the thought processes from those into this and it usually fucks it all up. That's what happens over at Warners with Superman and the other characters (even Batman if you don't have a visionary director), they're are just too many cooks in the kitchen who have no business giving their opinion. What would be bad (but probably not happen for many, many years) would be if Disney starts meddling too much in the affairs of Marvel, making it as mediocre as its own efforts. Whatever Marvel gets wrong, they often get a shit-ton right, and for that I think they should have final say over ALL of their properties... in due time, I guess. On a side note, how soon before we get a Marvel theme park at Disney? How long does Universal have those east of the Mississippi rights?

elsewhere, Batman's not usually a fun character

    by rev_skarekroe

At least not since the '70s when they moved away from the tone set by the TV show. Spider-Man always works best when it's fun to read (or watch) even with all the drama. When Spidey gets too dark, I lose interest quickly. The wisecracks in this movie make me think they've got certain aspects of the character right, but it also seems way more moody than I like this character to be.

    by Jay

Talk about flip flopping. It's amazing how one bad movie (spidy 3) effects the narrow-minded fanboys. It's also the Batman effect all over again. "What, a new movie is coming out? No way I can like them both. Fuck the old one!" It's such a pathetic way of thinking. Its why you all hate remakes. You're apparently unable to like both. News flash shit-for-brains! Attempting to tarnish the originals reputation on the Internet won't make the new one better than it actually is. Spider-man 2 is a great fucking movie. I hope this new one is even better. Why? Because I like great movies, and I don't give a fuck what they're called or the circumstances in which it was made.

That's the Crocman, not the Lizard

    by christpunchers2007

Look at how they're portraying Connors... like he's partially mad or evil. That was the good thing about Raimi's Connor. Though we never got to see him turn into the Lizard, he came off as a likeable character. That's why we would feel more for him when he does mutate. Based off these clips, I really can't give a shit what happens to our Crocman. I have no empathy for him at all.

    by Andrew Coleman

Sure hate the Raimi movies... That's fine. But look at this piece of shit. It is obvious they want to make Spidey Batman by making it "dark". It also helps them cut costs by having every action scene in the dark. They also won't make Peter a funny guy. They'll make him a bitter asshole. He essentially treats a robber like shit and then beats up cops. This is aimed for teens... You know the little fuckers who hate everything? That is what this is aimed for. They added the parents thing to try and connect this film series to Batman... It's fucking pathetic. They on top of that got The Lizard all wrong.

The black and white "flashback" scenes look lame as fuck

    by christpunchers2007

Raimi did not use a single black and white scene in his first two films (I'll pretend that in 3, he didn't give a shit anymore because the studios were forcing shit down his throat). He did a great job in SM2 in the Peter/Uncle Ben scene in the car scene using an all white background so you know that while it's not a flashback it still is a reference to the past. Now look at the trailer that we got here: a young toddler Pete in all black and white... going back to his memories in PERFECT 1080P SHARPNESS... does that even FEEL like a genuine memory to you? It feels forced, like the director doesn't know how to frame something uniquely so he goes with the conventional approach. Totally uninspiring. That alone proves how amateurish this Marc "Webb" fellow really is. He goes through the usual hoops of whatever school one goes to to get his shot at directing, and here he is using the most common method of shooting a flashback/memory scene... in the EXACT same manner as any 12 year old child would had the kid seen a few Hollywood blockbusters made in the last 40 years. Where's the originality? It certainly doesn't give us any hope. How is anyone with more than two brain cells supposed to take Webb seriously? His level of craftsmanship appears so dull and boring... and somehow that's supposed to surpass Raimi's vision (i.e. an unsettling Darkman from 1990 that still bests most superhero flicks today)?

  • You better get use to Garfield, he'll be Spiderman for the next 6 years at least.

This isn't for we Spidey purists, it's for kids...

    by Octavian

... Like the ones I stood next to in the newsagent yesterday who were drooling over this movie in Empire magazine. They don't know that this version of Lizard is rubbish, that the Spider-Man-ga costume is wrong, or that the backstory is a joke. They just want to see the movie. Hollywood, or in fact Marvel themselves for that matter, care not a jot for the source material. Spider-Man might be a pop culture icon to me and many of you, but he isn't really. He's dollars and cents. Nothing more, nothing less. If they thought they make another quarter by giving him wings and a tutu he'd have 'em.

totally agree, the tone, pace, and feel of that movie was so perfect. It was only 8 years ago, yet i feel like its a classic summer movie already. I have no idea how 3 could end up so bad, but also how could they get the tone and feel so wrong? it felt nothing like a spiderman movie and on top of that, they made peter unlikeable and stupidly turned the kiss from spiderman 1 into a plot point...how fucking stupid!

  • It bothers me when people do that.

    by Orbots Commander

One thing I did notice is that all the inter-cut action shots in the trailer all seem to come from one long action scene from some point in the movie. I guess I'll likely end up seeing it in theaters at some point, probably a 2-D matinee, but it's not something I'm really looking forward to, like Prometheus or Dark Knight.

  • embarrassment.. say it with me

  • And Spider-Man 2 was a great ride on opening night. Saw it a few times that summer. It made me wish there was another episode to see right afterwards. Batman Begins and The Dark Knight also made me eager to see another immediately after--BB was note perfect with Gordon handing off the Joker evidence to Bats!

  • However in that clip of him jumping on the subway ceiling after being startled out of his sleep,he was able to "wallcling",so i don't know.Ether way im not seeing this. ill watch that fantastic moment of spidy desperately trying to catchup with the subway train after being knocked into the traffic and rebounding into the sky while resuming his pursuit of Doc ock in spider-man 2 50 times in a row, before i plunk down any cash to see this shit.Such a great moment, one of the few pure moments of escapist ecstasy from that film, parker leaping along, atop those buildings and dive bombing toward the back of that train..stiring.that small moment encapsulates everything that spider-mans about visually and philosophically. that single moment is right up there with Superman looking at the sunrise at the end of the Donners wonderfull film, wort's and all. the kind of powerfully, timeless iconography that i promise this film wont even come close to capturing, mark my words. i hope im wrong..but this just seems shallow.

And for what it's worth, I think this flick looks decently shot and that they appear to have spent the 80 million well: Good cast, effects looks slick. But it will be the script that makes or breaks this reboot. I am skeptical but less so than when the project was announced. I can live with two different Spider-men. I LOVED the Raimi versions

    by pumaman

This looks cool as all Hell, but its almost like shitting on the previous 3 movies by saying now THIS is how it should be done, when its pretty much the exact same shit. Backflips, spins and dives in the air, web-slinging, explosions, and a sexy new super-villain ! The inclusion of Martin Sheen and Sally Field is a nice touch, seeing as they are veteran actors, but that only makes me more mad in a way, as it also cheapens the Raimi versions. If this new film had a Bruce Campbell cameo, then all would be forgiven. Either way, most of us will still watch this regardless.

  • April 16, 2012, 9:09 a.m. CST

    The Black & White Flashbacks.....

    by pumaman

...are far easier to watch then the crap I watched on Netfllix last night. The old movie 'The Watcher' starring a long-haired Keanu Reeves and a younger more handsome James Spader. The hazy, juddery camera flashbacks in THAT boring turd of a movie made me feel physically sick. Cloverfields shaky-cam was easier to watch!!!

  • I still have trepidations of course, but I'm not too worried about it. I can't stop thinking about director Marc Webb saying this isn't a reboot, it's just filling in the gaps of the original Raimi film. Sorry but, that's fucking bullshit. Peter didn't know Gwen Stacy in Spider-Man 3, and yet here she's his fucking girlfriend, or at least a girl he's interested in. And of course the mental pretzel-bending you'd have to go through to make any kind of logical timeframe around Dr. Connors becoming the lizard BEFORE being Peter's professor is kinda fucked-up.

  • Ever hear of the fucking WEEKEND? And in the summer it stays light until fucking 8:30 at night, 5 HOURS after school concludes.

  • I LOVED Spider-Man 2 I thought was perfection! That movie was freaking AMAZING to me, and I greatly enjoyed the first half of SM3 if Venom wasn't shoved down Raimi's throat I could've easliy seen him still doing it. If this was just a next chapter SM movie I'd probably feel better about it ala Bond. But the fact that they just rebooted it, that they're doing the origin again just pisses me off. But because Spider-Man remains my all time favorite charcter I want it to succeed.

Because the fact that I'm seeing all the action take place at night gives me that feel. Spider-Man to me has always be bright with a hint of dark. With the Great Power Great Responsibilty. But let's have all the action take place at night. Let's ignore his Uncle Ben being killed as the motivator. Let's pretty much takent he Batman Year One story and insert Spider-Man with him vs. the cops. I just don't like that. Spider-Man isn't Batman he's the everyman of comics and I feel like they're trying to turn him into Batman Jr.

McGuire always had that Art-house goon syndrome

    by ZodNotGod

about him, humorless, vacant. Garfield at least looks and sounds like a smart-ass. Not some mopey, emo-homo looking for a dong to suck.

When it was announced that Tobey would be Parker...

    by Jaster Mareel

I thought =Shit, that is fucking perfect casting! Nobody will have a problem with that.= And I thought he did a fantastic job in all 3 films. I still don't understand why there are so many pussies leaking over his casting. I'm sure Garfield will be great as well.

  • They seem to be trying to imply that Richard Parker was working on the Super Soldier Serum without coming right out and saying it.

Also, is Rhys Ifans doing an impression of David Warner?

    by Royston Lodge

    Seems like it.

Sally Fields is so wrong as Aunt May.

Shoulda got Helen Mirren for a GILF Aunt May

    by Joe Plumber

  • The casting in this just feels not right to me.

  • Look, Im a major comic fan & have been for over 40 years, and while I agree with a lot of the criticisms--CHILL folks--no need to go all haterish on each other. its just a freakin MOVIE--even if it toally sucks, life goes on

    GOOD!

    by Redmantle

Looks a hell of a lot more modern than the cheesy Sam Raimi stuff. Sam made a sob fest wit the snaggletooth Kirsten Dunst who should have been recast... and Tobey was never able to pull off the humor. Plus that "little old aunt may" shtick... worked for the 60's maybe but something a bit more nuanced was needed for a modern audience I think so this seems like a good update

    All lies...

    by Darth Macchio

I've been microwaving spiders for years but they all just explode into powder or just liquefy into some weird spider puddle. Friends. They are LYING to us. (I wonder if they'll go the Lee's Hulk route and have Parker be "amped" in some way from birth due to his parents involvement with the government (sony has no rights to s.h.i.e.l.d.) as 'super-spies' and the spider-bite just catalyzes what was already in his dna - instead of just having it be a radioactive spider) While I want this to be good - changing the fundamental beats of Spidey's origins smacks of the writers/production *knowing* another origin story is not what people want so instead of going the pure reboot path, they're changing it so it's "new". They should have taken Leterrire (sp?!) choice for Incredible Hulk - doesn't ignore or attend to Ang Lee's version but acts just fine all on its own. Altho admittedly, I won't miss Raimi's version of Aunt May - her character was hardly even a human being, more like an inspirational poster in human form, spouting cringe-inducing aphorisms nonstop.

There's no problem with a wise-cracking Spidey. In fact, if it can provide some comic relief at the right time, it'd be an improvement over Raimi's work. But it can't be there just for the sake of laughs, especially if it just makes Parker look like a raging asshole, getting back at other people because he used to be some whimpy guy.

    by darthSaul666

Hey I get your point... I really don't have any real problems with the wiscracks... Just with those who seem to think it's the be all and end all character trait that makes the character authentic...

That's right, it's not one of Spidey's central traits... and when he does wise crack, it should come off as intelligent and genuinely funny... it shouldn't be full of malice and anger like what saw him in the clip of him torturing a common thug.

It looks like, if anything, a slight step up

    by Jeremy Jar Binks

from Raimis first Spidey. And I do mean slight. Also, is it always dark in this version of NYC? I don't remember the comics ever being done in the dark. Oh, wait.. that's because they weren't lazy and didn't want to get away with attention to detail It's probably going to be good enough, I'm just not feeling a huge step up or forward here.

...I just feel asleep watching the trailer. I think it was the self-hypnosis from saying over and over again, "Why? Why?Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why?"

Big fan of Raimi but his Spider-Man sucked

    by Captain RawBeard

Seriously wish everyone would stop jizzing over Sam Raimi's Spider-Man films. 1st was Meh! 2nd was Ok-Meh! 3rd was Shit. Here's all 3 films Tobey Maguire was HORRIBLY miscast as Peter Parker, fancied the equally miscast Kirsten Dunst. Tobey is bit by a Spider, his Uncle dies, Tobey cries. Green Goblin was a Power Ranger, Macy Gray sang, Green Goblin kidnaps Dunst, Tobey cries, Goblin dies, Tobey Cries... Tobey is stressed at being a superhero, cries a lot, meets Doc Ock, Tobey loses powers is happy, then cries. Dunst is kidnapped, Doc Ock dies, Tobey cries... Tobey is with Dunst seems happy but looks like he is about to cry with happiness, then he gets infected with Venom. Flint turns into Sandman which was cool. Topher Grace turns up and is a better Peter Parker than Tobey. Tobey blacks up as Spidey and Emo's as Peter ruins his relationship with Dunst, and cries. Fights Sandyman... forgives him cries, Sandy also cries and floats away in the wind

    One more time.

    by Fletch_Bohanski

Okay, NERDS: I want answers. Freakin' Spider-Man. Everybody says Spider-Man is so relatable because he's an outcast and a nerd and has every day problems like failing classes, can't get a date and he never has any money. My question is this. How in the hell can a super genius high school student be gifted enough to create not only this amazing synthesized / biodegradable / proportionately strong w...ebbing, but also a device to dispense it in a way that allows control over it's use, but he can't breeze through his classes or get a job doing science? Hell, Billy Mays would have KILLED for that webbing. Sure, I buy the logic of suddenly because he was bit by a spider he is now also a world class acrobat, strong enough for a man but made for a woman and all that... but this just feels stupid. And he had to manufacture the components himself too! So he's a super genius, world class parkour champ, inventor, scientist, teenager with the body of an underwear model / gymnast and you want me to believe he is not well liked and cant get a job? NOT TODAY!
