The Behind the Scenes Pic of the Day kicks ass for the lord!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes Pic!
We’ve covered Peter Jackson’s Braindead (aka Dead Alive) before, but there’s never enough kicking ass for the lord as far as I’m concerned. I love this film to death (and undeath for that matter) because it seems to be Peter Jackson at his most pure. His imaginative filmmaking is unrestrained by the obligations of a big budget and he’s unafraid of offending anybody’s delicate sensibilities.
There’s a crazy EC style vibe to this flick that works so well. From the photography to the score to the performances to the set pieces and dark humor this one just works for me.
Today’s pic shows off Peter, Richard Taylor and their team giving some scale to their model work used to send modern day Wellington back to a few generations with a minimal budget.
Enjoy and click to enlargen!

If you have a behind the scenes shot you’d like to submit to this column, you can email me at quint@aintitcool.com.
In tomorrow’s pic’s dreams it’s the dungeon master!

Loving it!!!

The details on the street are what really caught my eye. If their heads weren't in the pic I would never have known it wasn't real.

Well, I guess it's time for me to turn in my geek card.
by SebastianHaff
I've seen this film dozens of times and never realized that was a model. Outstanding!
-
I used to watch the exterior city scenes and wonder how the fuck they could afford those period shots on such a low budget. I'm so ashamed right now.
-
..Bad Taste is till my favourite Jackson film, the work he did in models and props for that movie is mind bogglin. Astro Investigation Defence Service. Wish we would change that name.
-
Dream Warriors!!!
-
And I too never realized it was a model. This film is a practical effects bloody wet dream. Bad Taste, Feebles, Brain Dead - I wish Pete would return to his roots and give us a fun one like this again.
-
He kicks *ARSE* for the Lord.
-
How on earth... I too will be resigning my geek card. It's been real, guys.
-
I'm glad to see I'm not the only one here who never realized that was model work. Very impressive!

This movie's so gory it makes the Japanese tremble
by Christian Sylvain
Gotta love Braindead.

I had no idea there was this kind of model work on this movie. Amazing.
by JediRob
Simply amazing.
-
lots of great model makers in NZ,Knowing many model railroads there,.....outstanding work!
-
And yes it's called Braindead, not fucking Dead Alive.
-
That IS stunning work. If the crew was not their, it would look like a midday shot in some small town. By the way, if you guys want to see great special effects work with forground miniatures, check out THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS. John Richardson fooled so many eyes. Cinefex did a retrospective on his Bond work and I was amazed at how many shots were combinations of miniatures, forced perspective and other in-camera magic. The magazine speculated that he had never been nomiated for a special effects Oscar because no one knew they were looking at an effect. At the end of THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS, when Bond's mujahadeen allies escape across a bridge, the bridge and the whole chasm and stream under it was a miniature positioned a few yards in front of the camera while the actors raced across in the distance. Flawless work.

Still, the goriest movie ever made. I don't think anything has even come close.
by JediRob
Pretty impressive.
-
..."I kick ARSE for the Lord!" This isn't the first time you guys have misquoted this line! tut tut...
-
... not all of it.

Does anyone on this site know how to fucking punctuate?
by Gabe Athouse
The run-on sentences are endless it's hard to, take these people seriously they don't know; how to use punctuation at all. Criticize them for this and they laugh at you

Such a fantastic blend of humor, thrills, and insane amouts of gore!
by Sumatran_Rat_Monkey
Look at the handle; of course I have to make a comment or two! Love the fantastic model work and I am continually impressed by the work created by Richard Taylor. Cheers for another great Brain Dead image Quint!

Does anyone else have the same reaction when DEAD ALIVE/BRAINDEAD is ever mentioned --
by MooseMalloy
-- that being the image of the "neck feeding" coming immediately to mind? Also, there is model work in THE FRIGHTENERS too.

Im watching movie on tv right now called Untamed Heart where Christian Slatet plays a retard with a monkey heart
by ajit maholtra
He's stalking Marissa Tomei and he works as a dishwasher at a restaurant witn her and that dirty Mexican lady Rosie Perez. But then the monkey heart stops working and he dies. It's a very nice movie. Very nice.

and wondering why so many gory films the BBFC cut and banned in the UK. Then I realised that they actually GOT the humour. I think the director confessed that he loved Evil Dead around this time.
-
Jk :) Wonderful picture for a truly magical movie. My favorite Jackson followed by The Frighteners. Never heard much from him after that.
-
i'm sorry, what does EC stand for in this article? All i know is Eric Clapton, or possible Early Cretaceous.
-
-- which stood for "Entertaining Comics". Look it up.
-
This movie was fantastic...& the "I kick ass for the lord" has stuck with me since I was a yungin.
-
That is all.
-
I didn't know what EC was either (hangs head in shame) love the early Cretaceous guess :-) this column rocks, thanks Quint!
-
I should see this movie.

Remember, Jackson? That's what a real model looks like, in real daylight, not in that damn studio stuff you rely so much upon nowadays.
by Bloodhound

...not all of it...
-
Lovely miniature set they have there. Yes I know, CGI is better and more advanced... blah blah blah... The thing is, CGI just doesn't have that special magic mojo that practical effects and miniatures do.

I fear the day when a Braindead/Dead Alive remake is announced
by lv_426
You all know that day is probably coming soon. Possibly if the Evil Dead reboot is a financial success.
-
Here's proof that the best special effects are the special effects you didn't know (or forgot) were special effects.
-
Are you guys sure about that? I've spent A LOT of time down in New Zealand and they don't say "arse" down there. At all. That's more of a UK thing. And Cotton, not sure if you trolling or not, but you've not only forgotten the opening of Braindead, but forget where and when it's set. '50s Wellington wasn't exactly culturally diverse.
-
With all due respect to my learned correspondents, I'd have to say that with a huge Kiwi expat population here on Queenland's Gold Coast, not to my mention in my own workplace, that NZ Arse is definitely the preferred way to go :)
-
Was a riff on a past ridiculous thread about the lack of black people in LotR. Arse v. Ass In the movie, the priest is hamming it up so much that its difficult to tell. I always thought it was Ass. Next time Jackson gets interviewed, the lead question should simply be, "Ass or Arse?"
-
Weren't some of those evil orcs that grunt and kill people black?
-
Quint! I haven't said it in awhile but I really enjoy these posts. Seeing these tidbits behind the process of so many great movies is always really inspiring to an aspiring filmmaker.
-
...but if someone can prove otherwise, I will stand very much corrected. Someone get on the phone to Jacko - this is bugging me now...

Always thought this was one of the best miniature uses. Jackson did his own stop motion as well. This movie is up there with Robocop. Everyone should re-watch it immediately. Pure genius.
by UltraTron
The establishing shots with these miniatures are used so cleverly that it fooled most of you it seems. This is my favorite Peter Jackson film and I love the shit out of kong and rings. This movie shows more imagination than any other.
-
It's been awhile since I've seen it, but that quote is burned in my skull. As I hear it in my head it sounds like "oss " as in boss, which I always took as ASS with a kiwi accent.
-

I kick ass for the lord! Watch this and then centipede 2 back to back. Then speculate whether or not Six will ever branch out and make a rings trilogy

i was sort of hoping for a picture of the kung-fu priest
by Todd Slade
not that this isn't nice, love the early pics of these guys (and their cute miniatures!), but the quote got me psyched up...
-
Seriously, i had no fucking clue that the exterior shot of the tram moving through the town was a model - Amazing work! Also, yeah brain dead is a classic. Its hilarious, but scary when it needs to be . Definitely one of the best zombie moves ever made.
-
..those are giant people

Definitely one of the best horror comedies of all time...
by Jon Forbing
One of the few movies that is pretty much universally beloved by genre fans. If you don't like this movie, it's pretty hard to call yourself a horror fan.
