And OLDBOY's Villain May Be Played By...
Nordling here.
According to Variety, the part of the mysterious man who seeks his vengeance on Josh Brolin's character has been offered to Sharlto Copley. That's good casting - obviously he's tremendous in DISTRICT 9 and very fun in THE A TEAM. I'm really excited to see Neill Blomkamp's ELYSIUM, but Copley playing this character is a good choice.
Also a good choice - Elizabeth Olsen, who will be playing a caseworker trying to help Josh Brolin's character figure out what has happened to him and why. Will she be playing... well, if you've seen OLDBOY, you know who she could be playing. But Olsen is so good in MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE, and I'm looking forward to seeing what she does with OLDBOY. Spike Lee's got a great cast so far.

I don't really dig Spike Lee's work, but it would be nice to see what he does with this movie. I should add that I see no point in remaking this and whatever they do is going to be a poor excuse for what is already an amazing film!

Call me a purist, but you could literally cast my three favorite actors in the world in this movie (and Brolin and Copley ain't far from it, honestly) and I'm still not gonna see this. The original is near-perfect, and in America they will have to pull punches.

I normally try to avoid the pre-movie hating game but WHAT THE FUCK?!?! The original is so visually inspired and magical in it's direction. Spike Lee is a bare bones storyteller by nature, not a visual artist... the complete opposite side of the spectrum. How can this possibly be a competent movie when you strip away what made it great? Even with a wizard cinematographer it still can't make the cut. Casting against the grain does not mean being a fucking moron.

I gotta admit that the casting seems very good. Spike Lee is hit & miss with me, he can make great films like 25th Hour, Inside Man and Summer Of Sam or some of the worst films I have ever seen like Bamboozled.

Thanks s0nicdeathmonkey for pointing out that Spike is an incredible film maker and hardly would fall under barebones. He's had some clunkers and some good if uneven flicks. But many of them come at the expense of him trying something different and ballsy, which is the type of director they need to make this film. The key is the studio letting him make it as it should be made, not Spike.

Even after cutting up all the pieces (of the cow), the nerves are still active and the body parts will move -- sometimes, ferociously. If Spike Lee wants to match the squid eating scene, and maybe even do one better, he should have Brolin's character go to a butcher shop and eat a fresh, twitching cow leg. Americans>Beef>Cow

It's his girlfriend in college who kills herself because everyone believes the rumor of her being pregnant, or on meth or something trashy. The social worker will now be his step daughter whom he will only kiss and fall in love with. No sex. He will probably sacrifice himself to keep the secret from her. Hammer scene will now be a hallway shoot out. Because little was more with the realism hammer fight. The Raid topped that with machetes. Only way to beat that would be to have a shoot out or....skip the hall battle, but show the tight elevator fight that ends with the doors opening and the piles of bodies falling. That could be tight and gritty.

Seriously, I tried to watch that film 3 times before I could sit through the entire movie. Had to be the most overrated and overly boring film I ever saw. I'd rather watch The Last Airbender than Oldboy again. I might see the remake, if I have nothing better to do....but the original was a piece of shit and pretentious people say they liked it because it's "cool" to "like" that film...

You know, it's one thing not to like a movie. Fine. I can't imagine how someone could not like "Oldboy," but it's not for everyone. You, however, are obviously completely incorrect when you say that people only like it because "it's cool to like it" or whatever useless drivel you said.
