Disney's MALEFICENT is coming to theaters March 14th, 2014!
Hey folks, Harry here... Disney announced today that the production designer, Robert Stromberg... the man behind much of the look of AVATAR, Burton's ALICE IN WONDERLAND and Raimi's upcoming OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL, is going to make his directorial debut with Angelina Jolie as the great Disney villian, MALEFICENT.
I love the Maleficent character as executed and designed in the classic Walt Disney animated SLEEPING BEAUTY - easily one of my favorite Disney films. I can see Angelina knocking this out of the park. This is being written by Linda Woolverton whose credits span BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, THE LION KING and Burton's ALICE IN WONDERLAND.
Disney says we'll see this on March 14th, 2014 and I have to say... I'd just kill to see Angelina in the classic Maleficent style costume and makeup. Her cheekbones are kind of perfect for this. So when do you think Disney will announce that this will be shot in 3D, you know they're going to.

Havn't seen it yet but from the trailers, that movie looks pretty damn awesome. They really nailed the production design for that version of Snow White, and any new "re-imaginings" of classic Disney tales should follow somewhat in terms of design, methinks.

I mean, for a climax Maleficent turns into a giant fire breathing dragon. In Snow White, she turns into an apple shilling old lady. Could be an interesting movie, if they make a character as compelling as the production design.

Sounds great on paper and I'm betting she'd look great in tight black vinyl now or even 10 years from now but it's too 'self-aware' for casting. But then, I can't say I'm all that psyched about a sexually externalized Catwoman - I don't think it fits in Nolan's context for Bats but I'll be happy to be wrong on that. Oddly enough, I'm so psyched for Prometheus that DKR has taken a somewhat quiet back seat. Tho - the lego version of the trailer was full-on sweet.

Yech. Although, I totally see Angelina as Maleficent, my favorite Disney villain of all-time. I sure hope they try to remain somewhat true to the design of Sleeping Beauty, which is one of the most beautiful movies ever made. Though she is looking rather bony these days, I would still do all sorts of nasty to her.

That's why all the cinephile love for SB. Also, how many bombs does it take for Jolie (admittedly still a superstar celebrity) to become a box-office disadvantage? She helped drag Depp and The Tourist down to ball-sucking level. Personality? None. Acting talent? None. Intelligence? None visible through her face. All she has going for her is $3 million dollar tits and lips.

... unless they have some really, really amazing scenes that require it. Disney has been throwing huge sums of money at some of their recent films including Mars Needs Moms and The Lone Ranger and I think they need to tone down a bit. I'm interested in the concept of doing a Maleficent movie but I'd rather see a traditionally animated version. That's just my two cents.

Well, at least I think so. There is no bigger fan of the character or the Sleeping Beauty film (my fav film of all time, I might add) than me. That said... Gotta say... FUCK! Why oh why are they doing this (yes, I know... $$$)? They have to RUIN every fucking thing that's cool in the film world, don't they? Maleficent is a BADASS and she'll only stay thay way if she doesn't become an over-exposed cliche of herself. That's exactly what's going to happen here. Can't wait for them to follow this up with a direct-to-video animated "Sleeping Beauty 2". All the joy of film has been sucked out by the Hollywood greed machine. Fuck this and fuck NuDisney. ...I dropped my normally calm demeanor because frankly... I'm just SICK, SICK, SICK of this shit ahppening all the time. Every single beloved classic and/or franchise is being destroyed one by one right before our eyes. I don't know how much more I can stand this shit. /endrant
