Mike Wallace
1918-2012
The great Mike Wallace, who long hosted “60 Minutes,” one of the most popular and enduring television series in history, passed away last night. He was 93.
I don’t talk about “60 Minutes” much, but I watch it every Sunday and have for decades. Mike Wallace’s investigative pieces were the reason I got hooked on the show.
He was the first man producer Don Hewitt hired for the show in 1968 and he remained with the series non-stop and full-time until 2006.
I wish I could find embeds for more of Wallace’s “gotcha” stories. Most of them were fascinating and some of them were hilarious. Presumably “60 Minutes” will dust those segments off when it airs a tribute to the man next Sunday.

They didn't put up with crap. It was real journalism, they would ask real questions, and expect real answers not spin. That era is gone.

There was a quality and tenacity to his reporting that lent an air of prestige to his interviews.
by Mr. Nice Gaius
You got the impression that it was both a challenge and an honor to agree to a sit-down with Wallace. And woe to those who didn't bring their A-game. The grilling could get ugly. As time has gone by, the "power" of 60 MINUTES has somewhat diminished. It's still a decent investigative news program but it seems to have been swallowed up by the cacophony of the current 24 hour news paradigm. Unfortunately, there are very few doing the kind of in-depth journalism that is so very needed in these times. (Only FRONTLINE and documentaries like those by Charles Ferguson come to mind.) RIP Mr. Wallace. You cranky, hard-nosed SOB.

FOX News never altered the content of an important audiotape
by BoyNamedSue
But your cherished mainstream media did, so as to inflame already dangerous racial tensions......and kudos to Mike Wallace's son for asking the questions that the pussy liberal mainstream media won't ask Democrats because they are basically nothing more than press agents for the Democratic National Committee....Chris Wallace dared to ask Bill Clinton hard and legitimate questions that the mainstream media never would....and Clinton's ANGRY reaction was priceless!
-
...but Fox News is a major part of the mainstream media. Which, in turn and at the end of the day, isn't so much "liberal" as it is corporate. Big difference. I know how badly guys like you want it to be the other way but the fact remains: corporate interests will always trump any perceived ideological slant. Oh, and Chris Wallace is just a pale, limp-dick version of his father. You can tell that he doesn't even believe half the bile that gets vomited up by his own partisan network. But he'll keep collecting those paychecks like a good Murdoch soldier.

True and hilarious, they say the tower of babble was a "space port.("let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which his children built. Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language,.. that they may not understand one anothers speech)..hence the "spanking we got" by the E.T.s for getting to Big for our britches their eyes,) a profound message lies in that story that explains the planets current set up and why weave been made to endlessly fight each ever since(and probably before even that) We can be everything we ever dreamed of if we would stuck together as a "race",im not some Bible belt ass whoal with no worldwide perspective, far from it,i just think that's one of the few story's in the bible and in other ancient manuscripts around the world, that has remained viable thru all the various translations(from good 2 bad)it could seem like a fantastically obtuse tale if u dont have a nice grasp of the powers at play in this world,so it has mostly flyed over peoples head for century's

obijuanmartinez, did you actually even read that survey you linked to? The only thing that Fox News viewers were less than informed was the Egyptian protests.
by Coughlins Laws
Guess what, what's going on in America right now is a little more important than what's happening in Egypt. Frickin MSNBC viewers actually thought the Occupy Wall Street losers were Republicans. The survey only had a couple questions and it was limited to New Jersey. It was NOT a wide range of questions at all and it was NOT representative of Republicans or Fox News viewers as a whole. The survey proves nothing. You really show a lack of intelligence if you linked to that expecting it to prove to people anything at all...
-
Oh, and Chris Wallace got owned by Clinton in that interview.
-
Simple question, and you can apply this to nearly any profession: What's more important, the job or the person doing it? The answer is: the job. Mike Wallace may have understood this early on, and then said understanding lingered for who knows how long. But eventually, he decided to prop himself up on a throne and play judge, jury and executioner in his interviews. That's when he stopped being a responsible journalist, and started being a self-righteous jerk.

I mean, this is a fact I am sure we can all agree on? One advatange of Fox is that is offers someone like Romney the Corporate Raider! the 'Mitness Protection Program' ... Fact it, even you don't like Stewart- you have to agree that he conducts terrific and respectful interviews.

Mike Wallace was not without flaws but the guy investigated issues that we wanted to know about. I loved the ambush tactics from the 70s for interviews. No, judge briggs, we can't agree on that. You apparently have never watched the channel. A survey of news stories showed that during the 2008 election, Fox was indeed the most balanced news channel.
by Coughlins Laws
They had just as many negative stories about McCain as they did about Obama, while CNN, MSNBC, CBS, ABC, and NBC had almost 3 to 1 negative stories about McCain as they did Obama. Fox News does NOT always favor Republicans. Only one guy on the whole channel, Hannity, favors Republicans and he's more of a Conservative than a Republican. He only favors conservative Republicans and attacks moderates. O'Reilly defends Obama as much as he attacks him. And Greta is definitely a liberal or left-leaning moderate, NOT a conservative. As far as the hard news coverage during the day, I challenge you to give me any examples of Fox favoring Republicans over Democrats. You might be able to find a few examples, coming from analysts, but from the anchors, you won't. If you are just relying on biased polls from liberal websites or just clips from youtube, you aren't getting a full picture. Watch entire segments during the day or entire shows and then get back to me...

Wow - you really believe that, huh? You really believe that Roger Ailes'-run Fox News isn't a mouth piece for the GOP? Whoa. Sorry to break it to you, it is and everyone pretty much knows it. But then again, there is still a small percentage of Americans who apporoved of Bush's job performace before he left office. There are also people who believe that Saddam Hussein had a direct role in the 9/11 attacks. I don't have to provide an extensive list of Fox showing bias 24/7 in this forum because all that you have to do is google: 'Fox News Bias.' Then wah-lah, you'll find a vast amount of sources and examples of Fox being the mouth-piece for the GOP and distorting facts and/or lying. It's basically where Republicans go to have their views justified DESPITE the contrary evidence of the real world.

judge briggs, do you really think that going on Stewart is a pre-requisite to being President? And do you really believe he is respectful? Really?
by Coughlins Laws
But, yes, he will go on Stewart. His stupid handlers will make him. But he gains nothing by doing so. Nobody that watches Stewart is going to vote for him anyway...
-
Progressives shout, THAT'S UNPOSSIBLE! Oopsie. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AXAOT_swIE&feature=player_embedded

I never said it was a pre-requisite ... I said that Mittens doesn't have the balls to be interviewed by someone like Stewart who will, you know, actually respectfully challenge him through tough questioning. Mittens would rather received softball-like questions through the Mitness Protection Program that is Fox 'News.' Obama, however, does appear on Fox and is interviewed by O'Reilly and Brett Baer. Speaking of Baer, go check out the interview between Brett Baer and John Stewart ... Stewart made an excellent point of highlighting the differences between how Baer interviewed Bush and Obama. Go ahead, I dare you to watch that interview.

April 9, 2012, 12:13 p.m. CST
As far as Fox News bias, I will go beat for beat with you and for every single item you think is GOP bias, I will show you 2 examples of Democrat bias from MSNBC, CNN, CBS, ABC, and NBC. What you come up with from Fox News won't even be close.
by Coughlins Laws
And for the record, since you probably don't know the difference, we aren't talking about opinion delivered from labeled commentators, we are talking about news coverage. Sean Hannity, or Alan Colmes, or Mike Huckabee, or anybody you want to point out that is a clearly labelled analyst or commentator, are paid to give opinion. Your challenge is to show me bias coming from the hard news segments from the anchors during the day. The burden of proof is on YOU, not me. Anything Sean Hannity says at night is clearly going to be biased from his admitted conservative point of view. That is different than what goes on at CNN or MSNBC, when commentators pretend to be objective, yet take the liberal point of view 99% of the time. Do you really not see the difference? Fox News, when they have on, almost ALWAYS an equal number of liberal and conservative analysts, make a point to label them so you KNOW which side they are going to take. They don't have on anchors like Soledad O'Brien, or Norah O'Donnel, or Lawrence O'Donnel, or Martin Bashir, or Anderson Cooper, who they pretend are moderate, yet take the liberal point of view on almost every single topic. Do you understand the difference? Yes, it's true, you get more Republican and conservative points of view on Fox than most stations, but it's alot closer to 50/50 than you claim. It only appears to be slanted heavily Republican because CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, PBS, and NBC are about 10 to 1 Democrat to Republican. Quick outside of Joe Scarborough (who's clearly now a moderate), name another Republican on MSNBC? They put him on during the morning, one Republican, with about 8 Democrats. All day long you can go without seeing one Republican without the occasional guest...

-
Facts are facts ... just because they don't conform to your reality, they are still facts. Which is why I have so many problems with today's modern GOP. They simply do not believe in science and facts based on emperical evidence and peer-reviews social/science. For example, climate change is man-made. Fact! Republicans turn to Fox because their beliefs are justified by its programming- even when facts don't conform to its programming. Check out the study by PIPA (http://www.worldpublicopinion.org/pipa/pdf/dec10/Misinformation_Dec10_rpt.pdf) PIPA found: Researchers found that Americans who paid more attention to the news were more likely to know about current events. But Americans who relied on Fox News were “significantly more likely than those who never watched it to believe”: * most economists estimate the stimulus caused job losses (12 points more likely) * most economists have estimated the health care law will worsen the deficit (31 points) * the economy is getting worse (26 points) * most scientists do not agree that climate change is occurring (30 points) * the stimulus legislation did not include any tax cuts (14 points) * their own income taxes have gone up (14 points) * the auto bailout only occurred under Obama (13 points) * when TARP came up for a vote most Republicans opposed it (12 points) * and that it is not clear that Obama was born in the United States (31 points) This point, in particular, seems especially noteworthy: in some cases, regular Fox News viewers would have done better, statistically speaking, if they had received no news at all and simply guessed whether the claims about current events were accurate. What’s more, , this isn’t necessarily about party affiliations — Democrats who watch Fox News were worse off than Democrats who relied on legitimate news organizations (though Dems who watch Fox News were still less confused than Republicans who watch Fox News)." .... This is why Fox is a dangerous joke ... because people take them so seriously and they shouldn't be treated as such because they make up their own shit so their realities are justified no matter what the facts say.
