Due to my strong personal convictions, I wish to stress that this Behind the Scenes Pic of the Day in no way endorses a belief in the occult.

Published at: April 7, 2012, 12:24 p.m. CST by quint

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes Pic!

This weekend is all about a resurrection… or an angel of death, depending on your religious preference (there's also marshmallow baby chickens, but that one doesn’t really fit with my picture, so I’m going to ignore it), so I got you covered on both with today BTS.

We have zombies, which are dead things that resurrect, so two in one!

This isn’t the first time a shot from Thriller has made its way into the column and it won’t be the last. It’s an iconic moment of pop storytelling. You have John Landis fresh off of An American Werewolf In London and Twilight Zone, Michael Jackson in his prime and Rick Baker along for the ride.

Despite Jackson’s disclaimer before the film (paraphrased in the headline), he was a big horror fan. In fact, he used to go to monster conventions dressed head to toe in disguises so he wouldn’t be recognized. The most famous of these is a Nosferatu costume he dressed up, mask and all. It’s the modern day equivalent of being a famous geek and dressing up as a stormtrooper so you can actually go to Comic-Con.

We’ve seen Jackson in his were-cat getup, now we get to see Rick Baker touching up MJ’s zombie make-up while Landis looks on. It’s a great shot and I hope you guys enjoy it!

This is another one courtesy of Pat Barnett. Click to (slightly) enlargen.

If you have a behind the scenes shot you’d like to submit to this column, you can email me at quint@aintitcool.com.

Tomorrow’s pic is holiday themed! And from the golden era of Hollywood.

80s directors didn't transition well to the 90s and beyond

    by cookepuss

Guys like Landis and or John Hughes produced amazing movies in the 80s, but their movies only really spoke to the moviegoers or issue of that decade. The type of movies that were produced after that demanded different directing or writing styles. Could you imagine Hughes writing American Pie or Landis doing Hostel? Their sensibilities were different, which is why a guy like Woody Allen feels almost anachronistic since he's a product of the 70s. It's pretty rare that these guys make the transition. You've got to be a Steven Spielberg to break out of your key decade. Hughes was lucky to have Home Alone in 1990, but ended up writing 90s trash like Beethoven or Dennis the Menace. With John Landis.... Blues Brothers 2000. The less said the better. Writers and directors don't always transition well. Writers write what they know. Directors direct according to their sensibilities. That stuff is locked in more than with actors. Actors fare better because they're playing roles. They're always being asked to change. They're never who they really are. Every bit of a director or writer is on screen. So, if you've got a flare for all things 80s then you might not do so well in a market 30 years newer.

Funny you mention that. Esquire did a piece on Justin Timberlake a few months back where he and the author dressed up like Ernie and Bert in these cheap knock off costumes and went to Comic Con. Took pictures with unknowing attendees etc. Did anyone reading this attend Comic Con and get their picture taken with someone wearing a third rate Ernie and Bert costume?

    by VoiceOfSaruman

You jackasses. I actually knew MJ, he was the kindest guy in the world who wouldn't hurt a fly, so talented and very humble in his private moments. If you look into those abuse allegations, you'll find both parties that sued him were ridiculously questionable people and suspicious circumstances - people who took advantage of him. The LAPD tried for years to nail him - and never could because there was never any evidence whatsoever. But you guys are all brilliant judges from your computer chairs, right? Love how the internet means you can say anything and it doesn't mean shit anymore.

the love for him. Whether he kiddie fiddled or not (and I personally don't believe he did) I still couldn't get past the surgery, femanine voice and annorexia. He was a creepy freak for other reasons. Elivs was a man. Madonna's a man. But Jackson??? The guy floated gigantic blow up statues of himself down rivers and harbours around the world. He took narcissism to a whole new level. Take the film clip for Bad. The guys poncing around a carpark like a deranged drag queen. "I'm Bad" Oooohhhh oooohhhh. Oooh I am scared! Quick everyone run before Michael gets you because whos bad? Micaheal apparenly? If I ran into him in a car park looking like that I think I would piss myself laughing. Is there anyone on this planet who knew him at the time and approached him and simply questioned his look. "hey Michael - do you think you might want to re-think the leather and wet perm look?" It's kinda not tough. Bad was certinly more disturbing to sit through then Thriller. Never got it. Still I don't mind some of his early dico stuff but it was all down hill after Thriller.

    Killik: umm... Vitiligo=nose job?

    by Monroville

I highly doubt a disease involving the dissipation of skin pigmentation would lead to a thinner and thinner nose and a Kirk Douglas chin dimple. Even so, I can go either way with Mike. I can't say he is guilty of pedophilia one way or the other, as I can see it being true or not (just a naive kid himself, or went overboard wanting to please children that he PLEASED children. It's like the old saying: "You can love your pet, just don't LOVE your pet"). I would save my wrath for Landis. I would like to ask the talkbackers here a question: between Landis, Polanski and Gibson, who should be given a second chance?

Junkie? Didn't Jackson die due to his addictions? Don't blame the doctor. He did exactly what Jackson instructed him to do even though it was illegal. Skank? wasn't his feet covered in crusty fungus infections that stank and his body in a general state of decrepancy upon death? Vitiligo? So why did he have mascara tattoos? The autopsy proved it. He was a vain narcissistic mess. I have also never heard much about Vitiligo sufferers being "forced" to have surgery. Besides what does plastic surgery have to do with a skin condition? Reshaping and destroying your nose does not help keep Vitiligo under control. I will give you his music - one mans trash is another mans treasure. But don't defend his character. Whitney, Elvis, Michael, Winehouse etc.... never understood admiration for junkies. I am sure there are pleany of junkies huddling under overpasses who can sing a note or two. Addiction is a sad thing and I empathise with anoyone battling it but I would never admire anyone for being a junkie.

apparently he was forced to put that there by the jehova's witness group he was a part of a the time. i guess the occult and whatnot is against their beliefs so they made him put that in there. if i'm correct he left them and/or the religion not long after. there was a whole magazine dedicated to that video back in the day which was filled with 9x10 posters, i had a whole wall covered with them for a good while until i got freaked out. the zombies eyes practically glowed white in the dark of night...it was creepy. lol i still think jackson himself looks sooo creepy when he does that "dead stare" thing while in zombie mode. the kitty/werewolf i could pet....zombie jackson better stay away from me!!! :P

The only reason John Landis did not go to prison is the district attorney's office was in some political turmoil and they screwed up his trial. He was guilty as hell.

  • April 8, 2012, 2:08 a.m. CST

    by KilliK

i love it how you try to reverse the initial comparison now that it turned out to be unfounded.but here we go: =Junkie? Didn't Jackson die due to his addictions? = actually he died because he had severe insomnia problem and asked from his doctor to make his sleep.the doctor fucked up by overdosing him and killed him.at least that was the final verdict in the court. =Don't blame the doctor. He did exactly what Jackson instructed him to do even though it was illegal.= well the court had a different opinion on this matter. = Skank? wasn't his feet covered in crusty fungus infections that stank and his body in a general state of decrepancy upon death?= i dont know.do you have the coroner's official autopsy report to have a look? = = Vitiligo? So why did he have mascara tattoos? The autopsy proved it. He was a vain narcissistic mess. I have also never heard much about Vitiligo sufferers being "forced" to have surgery. Besides what does plastic surgery have to do with a skin condition? Reshaping and destroying your nose does not help keep Vitiligo under control. = are you a doctor? do you know how the disease affected his psychology and his body? but let's accept that he was indeed a vain narcissistic mess.which is a common trait to popular and genius artists anyway.this is a crime and makes him a freak because? he didnt hurt anyone and what he did,he did it to himself. so tell me. why is this so much reprehensible to you? why? =But don't defend his character.= i will defend his character in the same way that a nobody in the internet trashes his character without knowing him personally.if you have a problem with it,just learn to accept it. = Whitney, Elvis, Michael, Winehouse etc.... never understood admiration for junkies. I am sure there are pleany of junkies huddling under overpasses who can sing a note or two. = what do you mean? what's your point/

  • I knew the talkback would be packed with people spouting half-assed condemnations about shit they know nothing about. Thanks for not disappointing me, talkbackers. You know, I have no idea if Jackson or Landis are guilty. And neither do any of you. But nuanced discussions about the possibility of events that none of us were personally involved in don't make anyone feel like they have the biggest swinging dick, so they will never exist on this site. Hey, did you guys know that Al Pacino killed and ate a dog? I just made that up, but I can't wait to hear it regurgitated as internet "fact" in a couple of weeks. The truth isn't nearly as fun as blindly accepting any juicy gossip you hear. Can't wait to meet our new talkbacker, al_pacinos_dog_related_diarrhea, when he inevitably shows up.

  • Now if you have film of Al Pacino killing and eating a dog I'll listen, otherwise shut your ignorant mouth!

    @monroville

    by KilliK

From wiki: Jackson's father was also said to have verbally abused Jackson, saying that he had a fat nose on numerous occasions In 1979, Jackson broke his nose during a complex dance routine. His subsequent rhinoplasty was not a complete success; he complained of breathing difficulties that would affect his career. He was referred to Dr. Steven Hoefflin, who performed Jackson's second rhinoplasty and subsequent operations.[23] So again i ask you,are you a fucking doctor? do you know in person the psychological and biological problems that MJ used to have? because right now you are simply some anonymous guy in the internet who reproduces all the bullshit that you have been fed by the Media. your turn.

  • April 8, 2012, 1:50 p.m. CST

I've found this Landis/Twighlight Zone stuff quite shocking..

    by paul burnett

..obviously i've known for years about the accident and deaths that occured, but until this talkback i had no idea how culpable Landis appears to be in all of this. Did he accept blame in any way?, even if he wasn't breaking any laws, surely he must have shouldered some responsobility in the deaths. I looked at some of the youtube footage (not all) and i've got to wonder what he was thinking. Unrelated but to think Gibson gets crucified by all and sundry while Landis is forgiven is a joke.

  • April 8, 2012, 1:52 p.m. CST

If anyone wants to talk directly to Landis about the accident --

    by MooseMalloy

-- just move to Los Angeles. I lived there for about seven years and saw that fucker about 3-4 times randomly around town. The first time was at the old Golden Apple where he was buying a huge stack of comics.

  • April 8, 2012, 2:41 p.m. CST

@icanthavethat nope, Landis got away completely scott free

    by AlexDK

He has never, ever admitted having any blame for the accident, and was completely acquited from the manslughter charges, even after many members of the production crew testified that Landis was well aware of the risks. One of the lawyers actually used a mind-bogglingly callous (paraphrasing here, of course) "if flimmakers aren't allowed to take risks, the art from wouldn't advance" argument during the trial. Disgusting. On the other hand, his career suffered greatly for it, and never recovered, in great part because Spielberg stopped giving him support. Oh, and he DID break laws, those children shouldn't be there at all.

  • and yet compared to Landis, whom I hear described in glowing terms, did very little. Yes, throwing around a few racial slurs in no way compares TO BEING RESPONSIBLE for the deaths of two young children. Oh, but I forget- Landis was never convicted hence no crime.

  • April 8, 2012, 5:05 p.m. CST

Heavy shit. But still, people hold up D.W. Griffith all the time. Mad Max is amazing. So is American Werewolf in London. I don't think we forgive the artists, or let them off, but we can accept great art from flawed individuals.

    Take that as you will.

  • I read about the incident and the subsequent trail in depth the other day and from what i read, he did play a part in the tragedy. Landis rejected all safe alternatives (dummies, stunt dwarfs etc)to shooting the scene that killed morrow and the 2 children. In addition to being behind the needlessly dangerous shoot, Landis also knowingly hired the two children illegally. So he got away with involuntary manslaughter , negligence and hiring illegal labour- he must have had one hell of a lawyer! He's made some great work (including the best werewolf movie ever made) but the way he handled that shoot was wrong and im shocked that he didnt get arrested for it!

Not fair to George Miller...or Michael Jackson...

    by Darth Macchio

I haven't seen all the little details but I did see Twilight Zone in the theater as a kid and I do remember seeing the reports on the news about the accident. Not sure if were talking about someone who disregarded basic safety guidelines in pursuit of a shot or if it was something worse or not as worse - though disregarding guidelines would certainly be enough, obviously. But I find it all a bit unfair to George Miller - who I think may have directed some of the best horror ever put to film in his version of "Nightmare at 30,000 Feet" Not fair to lump the failure of this movie, if that's what its considered at this point, for something someone else did that involved people getting killed on set. And I think some of the accusations against Michael Jackson are unwarranted. While I could certainly be wrong, the whole pedo thing I think was some money-grubbing assholes ripping off a very weird guy and getting away with it precisely because Jackson was a very weird guy and people love to bash, and gleefully participate in group bashing, the different. But all that is besides the point - what would you be like if you had more money than you could likely ever spend? I don't mean a few mill - I mean hundreds of millions, almost billions. Would you be like Oprah Winfrey or Bill Gates? Or some wealthy politician? Would you be like Jackson? Maybe Floyd Mayweather fanning himself with thousand dollar bills? Or perhaps Donald Trump? How about like Nic Cage or Brando by owning (renting) your own island? Would you spend absurd amounts of money on what most people would consider a waste (movie memorabilia)? Would you surround yourself with super-hot pornstars and random scantily clad woman (or whatever gender you preferred?) Would you have your own "entourage"? Or would you just build a moat around some castle like fortification to keep out the riff-raff? In many ways, money is like alcohol, it brings out the real person. Whether that person is someone like Jackson, or like those that he chose to keep as company.

    Here's my thing...

    by Jon Forbing

While I admittedly don't know all the details (I was unaware of there being video of the accident in which you can hear Landis saying "Lower", if that's true), my issue is with the fact that everyone states these things as fact. And it really hurts the whole argument when most people have lumped it in with the Michael Jackson thing, i.e. "look at these 2 pieces of shit in this picture LOL", when obviously there is waaaaaaay less evidence on the Jackson case. Maybe some of you have taken the time to research the hell out of the "Twilight Zone" incident, and make an informed decision. If so, I wasn't talking to you. My point was: 1) Most people didn't. 2) Most people just like stirring up shit on the internet because they're sensationalist dicks. 3) None of us were physically present at the time either of these supposed crimes occurred (or possibly not occurred in Jackson's case). 4) A fun behind-the-scenes picture of a beloved piece of film history is very quickly ruined by a bunch of people yelling the same shit that has been written on a thousand other comments sections (many of them on this site). I'll shut my "ignorant mouth" now.
