The X-Men Return To Class In January!!
The Kidd here...
The bell for homeroom will start ringing in January, with 20th Century Fox setting a start time for production to begin on X-MEN: FIRST CLASS 2.
Matthew Vaughn had already signed on to return to the director's chair. However, the bigger question was how scheduling would work out around Jennifer Lawrence with Fox and Lionsgate battling for position with their franchise movies as both studios were looking at the fall to get the X-MEN sequel and CATCHING FIRE in the can. Fox could have pulled rank, as their option on Lawrence returning as Mystique trumped whatever Lionsgate had in their contract language, but a compromise has been reached with Lawrence shooting the second chapter of THE HUNGER GAMES trilogy beginning in August or September in order to be freed up for X-MEN at the beginning of next year, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
We should be hearing a lot on both projects fairly soon as CATCHING FIRE will need to move forward with finding a new director now that Gary Ross is out and X-MEN: FIRST CLASS 2 will be in the market to cast some new characters.

apart from the beast fur/ cgi and wooden performance by January Jones it was pretty darn good.

seriously? I hope they come up with a better title than "x-men: first class 2."

Beast sucked in First Class, Darwin was lame, so was tornado guy.
by Stereotypical Evil Archer
Otherwise I mostly liked the movie except some piss poor green screen and a real shakey frozen Kevin Bacon. Bring us Apocalypse!
-
They're back, and almost legal!
-
The previous movies sure knew how to fuck up the character of Cyclops. He was Wolverine's bitch. Let's leave Wolverine out of the picture and give Cyclops the attention he deserves. He's the captain of the team.
-
Longshot would be fun though. I am becoming a huge fan of Matthew Vaughns. I was immensely surprised at how good First Class was. And I thought the girl playing Mystique was terrible through the whole movie, but then toward the end I found myself moved the most by her arc and I realized that maybe she was unlikable on purpose... I don't know, it was pretty awesome and had the perfect amount of Wolverine. If wolverine is in this it needs to be another short and funny cameo, like he is trying to kill... let's say, Longshot, and he falls into a deep pit and lands in a huge pile of shit or something and then he tries to light a cigar and ignites all the methane surrounding him and burns all the hair and clothes from his body and has to start climbing out of the hole all shitty and bald and naked... all before Longshot even knows he's being attacked, because of the luck thing. That would be cool, any more wolverine would suck.

Now how about a better cast of X-Men this time?
-
After Kick-Ass I expected a LOT from Vaughn. But it was just going through the motions. Filling in the blanks that we didn't need filling in. Did George Lucas's mistakes teach us nothing? You don't need to turn unnecessary exposition into a fucking franchise. I seriously prefer Last Stand. Had it's faults, but at least it was fun and did its job of wrapping up the trilogy. Maybe with the 'reinvigorated' series opener out the way, part 2 will deliver a bit more of what was so great about Singer's two entries. But I doubt it.
-
easy kills thunderbird and dazzler!..i've completely forgotton about longshot! Would like to see colossus and kitty in a more prominent role. nsame with powerman and iron fist, i really want those guys to have their own big screen adventure. it would be cool if there was an alpha flight intro. I mean that would be cool!
-
Say some thing possitive, there is good in you...
-
You know, if the other movies are still valid.
-
But first off I think marvel holds the rights to luke cage and iron fist and BOTH of them are NOT mutants... but cameo's would be awesome. But even that is a longshot. Get it? ;-)
-
Hey, they fucked up with the White Queen. Why not Lohan?
-
I think I'd get more from screwing one of those cylindrical ice cubes than the dim, pouty, talent-free Ms. Jones.
-
Make the villain Apocalypse, waking up from a 2,000 year slumber in the desert. Everyone has to work together to beat him (and maybe his Horsemen), and there's hope that Xavier and Magneto will kiss and make up (except we know they won't).

I say screw the other movies Give me Cyclops, Storm, & Colossus DONE RIGHT
by Wcwlkr
Don't get me wrong I thought X2 was pretty great! But upon further viewing the first X-Men was just meh, and X3 was an abomination. X-Men First Class not only was great but it also gave the idea that you could just restart the whole thing. There was a lot of stuff done in the first X-Men that was simply ignored by First Class like the building of Cerebo & Magneto's helmet. In the first X-Men Magneto & Professor X supposedly built Cerebo but in First Class you see it was Beast. Also in the first X-Men Professor didn't seem to know how Magneto was blocking his telepathy, where as in First Class you clearly see it was from Shaw's Helmet. I say just keep with the fresh start introduce the original X-Men the right way. That way you can wash the taste from the GOD AWFUL X3 and Wolverine out of our mouths.
-
It was by far my favorite of the X-Men films and one of my favorite SH films. Can't wait for the sequel.
-
These are movies and in the movies Cyclops is basically a non-entity thanks to Hugh Jackman's alpha maleness. In a comic book a guy who can blast things with his eyes is cool and Cyclops as leader works, because having to wear a big yellow visor is no big deal in a personal relationship. In a movie, the guy who can't open his eyes for love scenes ain't going to be your lead.
-
I thought they did a great job on him... Anyway, the one thing I want to see really REALLY badly? Magneto responsible for the Kennedy assasination. 'Magic bullet' explained right there. With Mystique and Angel Salvador switching sides and Darwin pushin' daisies, why not throw in Mimic or Changeling (to take the place of Mystique), Sunfire, and Thunderbird? Fun characters, one of them dies a dramatic death. You got it made. Set it in the late 60's and make it a mix of X-MEN and RESCUE DAWN.

...nut the whole Seventies thing with the X-Men and their non-mutant allies was cool. Colleen Wing and Misty Knight, for example. The occasional 'hi' to Spider-Man. The way the whole Marvel universe interacted at that time before everyone had to have their own spin-off series... Oh, and if we do go Seventies, then Arcade and Murderworld for the big bad, please!

Matthew Vaughn already posited starting out the sequel with Magneto being responsible for the magic bullet
by Joe Graig
It's on the Wikipedia page. If that's the route they go with, that would be awesome. I also don't get the hate for Beast. He was fully practical effects/makeup and Vaughn specifically wanted fur. In the huge making of on the blu-ray the make up artists were under the gun to get it right and you could just tell if they had more time it would have looked better. It looks way better than what they came up with on Kelsey Grammar, who literally looks like he has hair glued on him. And yes, I wasn't a fan of January Jones either in First Class, but after watching all the behind the scenes footage I realized that she was directed to be that way. Because you know, the character of the White Queen would never show her emotions, always have an 'icy' demeanor. The soundtrack for First Class is really well done as well. Actually has recognizable themes throughout, especially for Magneto. Works very well as a stand-alone listen. Vaughn shot this film under the gun and it still turned out pretty damn great. Let's see what happens when he has the time to get everything right.

What disturbs me about this is that there has been no mention of a script thus far but a target date to start shooting in January. Sounds like they are utilizing the strategy they had with the earlier X-Men movies, particularly X3, which didn't work out well.

then the fault lies with him and not ms jones ( now im not sure who to blame i dont know if i should apologize or not? uh. sorry.. just in case!) i dunno, maybe she was just wrong for the part. Emma Frost to me has always come across as a dominatrix type not wooden.

To me, the best parts of FC are without question the Nazi hunting scenes..what little there was of them. And January Jones was terrible, eye-candy only casting which is just MichaelBay-dumb. Is she wooden on 'Mad Men' as well? Cause I don't see how she even gets work..she was bad in that amnesia Liam Neeson movie too..may as well hire one of those Kardashian idiots or a porn star (they're all hotter than those Kardashian idiots anyway). Bacon was fantastic though as was Fassbender. McAvoy was good but didn't work for me 100% (Vern I believe even said it seemed odd to be taught by someone a few years older than you are - make him more obnoxious and arrogant as opposed to wise, etc - I agree..there's no way Xavier is smarter than Beast anyway). I also liked the character for Darwin and given his mutation, he may very well not be dead. He's practically invincible - and others beyond me have considered that he may have just turned into pure energy to escape Bacon's energy blast (though the look he gave Havoc tends to lead the viewer to a different conclusion, its still possible). As cute and good as Lawrence was, I don't think this would suffer greatly if we got someone else...age the characters enough and you can use Rebecca Romain - she's under s ton of makeup anyway and even in her what, mid-30s, she's still crazy fine and also very capable as an actress (Lawrence is probably better in that regard tho). And please..no more Wolverine. Resist the temptation to put him in yet another Xmen movie. Not with Jackman anyway. He's great as the character if not physically right for him...but enough is enough already. He's got his own sequel coming and that's plenty. At this point, I'm expecting him to be caught up in some sort of real estate crime, probably launching nukes at the fault line in California or trying to create a new continent out of adamantium or something, if this continues any further.

So even though at the end of First Class, Mystique's character arc made her stay naked and blue, but now since Lawerence is a star she'll be "normal" moreso
by Al
Unless Mystique is "undercover" as a human more of the time of the film. If she's just chilling with the Brotherhood as Jennifer Lawerence, that's clearly just so they can put her face up there more often. Yes, she did that in First Class, but she was trying to fit in with the other normies. First Class rocked. They yanked and pulled from different continuities and characters and mashed it together, cool stuff.
-
April 6, 2012, 5:47 p.m. CST
Anyway, yeah, cut back on the kids and ratchet up the Fassbender / McAvory quotient more

That was my biggest gripe about First Class was the First Class of it all. More Magneto and Xavier saying serious things to each other seriously.
-
I want Mystique less naked, with a long white dress and longer realistic looking hair.

Just ignore continuity and the past movies and do what they want. X-Men First Class is the best and only truly decent X-Men film. Good work.
by reflecto
-
He's IN the movie, lol. And his age doesn't mesh with Wolverine's version of him.
-
...I would smile for an entire day if any movie came out with Luke Cage, Iron Fist and...if I may...the Disco Dazzler. That would be fun, no matter how badly it turned out. Then maybe a Moon Knight movie. Maybe Nolan can direct, since he's done with Batman. It's possible his experience on those movies might be somewhat applicable.
-
I loved First Class, but I really hope they do something fresh with the sequel. Have a threat that both the Xmen and the Brotherhood have to fight, with them getting into a scrap or two along the way. That gives you the opportunity to bring a bunch of kids into it. I doubt they'll be using anyone from the original trilogy, but they've already gone ahead and used Emma even though they used her in Wolverine Origins, so who knows? I'd like to see them use some of the X-Force and X-Factor characters instead of just making some up.

First Class syncs up enough with the original continuity. There are glitches but really minor
by Al
My biggest gripe was how Mystique was in it, but they tossed in a throwaway line by Beast that she would age at half the rate of everybody else. Now, if they did something and flat-out had Cyclops, Jean Grey, Wolverine & Storm & Nightcrawller, & Rouge in the next movie, yeah, separate reboot. But it fits close enough. The rest are mostly minor and can probably be No Prized away anyway.
-

-
Alpha Flight rocked (the original Claremont/Byrne run, anyway). I'd never considered it before, but Dinklage as Puck would be a scream. I'd be more interested in who they cast as Snowbird - a hot blonde who's a bit 'vacant' - surely THAT was the right role for January Jones? And then there's Aurora...
-
ghost-of-chainsaw - you're probably right. The whole underground pinball stuff was a bit lame, but it rocked when I first read it (I was eight). That said, there's no reason Murderworld has to be goofy. Design it with Westworld/Man With The Golden Gun influences in mind and tone down Arcade's idiot personality - it could still work. Especially if they REALLY went for the whole Seventies vibe with a straight face!
-
I'm with uberfreak - please can we have a CGI Kelsey Grammer back (the only thing that was good about X3) because the practical make-up from First Class was bad. As in 'pulls you out of the movie' bad. ...and lutz - nice casting! Though part of me would really love to see a 'Firefly' era Christina Hendricks in a skintight Phoenix outfit. Guess which part?

It felt like they were rushing to put into one movie what ought to have been the story told over at least two. I wanted to see a lot more of Magneto and Xavier as allies, and see that friendship severed later. Magneto was easily the best character in First Class. I'm pretty confident Vaughn et al would have paced things differently if they'd had proper backing and reassurance from Fox.
-
April 7, 2012, 11:31 a.m. CST
one of the biggest details I didn't understand about First Class -- Magneto has an American accent... ? WTF?
by TheSeeker7
christ you even have a British actor playing the role. What happened to the original tongue?
-
April 7, 2012, 11:33 a.m. CST
and btw, I understand that in FC you don't have to be *that* anal with making as many continuity links hold up with the rest of the franchise as possible
by TheSeeker7
but still, that seems like a pretty easy and simple one. Erik/Magneto had a British accent (or at the very least, "unknown European") but Fassbender played it pretty much straight American.
-
Vaughn is quietly one of the best directors working right now. Definitely the substance to go with Ritchie's style in retrospect. However, Beast needs to be completely redone. He needs to not be a petulant, unsure of himself, tortured, emo-genius. They need to re-cast him a bit older, and with a Shakesperean actor like they did with Kelsey Grammer in X3. Have him drop his literary references and quotes with someone capable of delivering the lines.
