AIN'T IT COOL with Harry Knowles: Episode 1...
Hey folks, Harry here... I've been crazy distracted with this show. I know it's just supposed to be a YouTube show - but instead of seeing this as a cheap thing that I could just collect a check from, I decided to try to make something that I've wanted to do for a very long time... which is to translate the fantasy-esque world of Ain't It Cool News to a different medium. NERDIST has been wonderful to work with, giving me freedom that I wasn't even given when I shot that Comedy Central pilot with Moriarty and pseudo-Quint all those years ago. This is just the first 5 minutes of something that I think is particularly "Harry" - right after I post this - I am headed to the studio to shoot Episode 2 - I can already tell you, it will be even better. It isn't so much a NEWS show - as much as it is an AIN'T IT COOL show. In future episodes you'll meet each of the AICN contributors, special guests and go on unexpected and fun adventures. Now, let's go where it all started... My father's basement, where AIN'T IT COOL was forged 16 years ago...

i love aic, but this is retarded harry
-
One look at Harry knowles and my Harry bawles will never let me get an erection again. You can't unsee that beard!!! Cheers, Harry!
-
Can't wait till you really get in the groove with this show. Now... where's those DVD columns dammit?
-
Does Quint show up later as your magical Genie that you rub?
-
I liked it...you have personality and a passion for what you discuss
-
Liked it.
-
Re:"translate the fantasy-esque world of Ain't It Cool News to a different medium." Yeah, some fantasy. More like an adult nightmare. Also, Harry needs to start doing some pushups.
-
Great production, like the ideas, some of the jokes are good, but there's something extremely desperate about it all. And is there anything in this video that we havn't read about yet? ANNND havn't podcasts replaced these sort of programmes?
-
Or could this just be a response to the ongoing criticism of "hey harry you can't fucking write!". I don't know, all I know is that the boiler is pretty fucking passive aggressive.
-
Enjoyed the less serious, goofy feel, so sue me lol

The Boiler needs to be way more foul mouthed and call Harry a cunt...as a counterpoint for Harry's woeful comedic skills...

btw dont we have this show already, with funnier guys? Comic Book Men?

I get it. I think I had that Fraggle rock carrot vehicle when I was a kid. Wasn't that a happy meal toy? The memorabilia surrounding you seemed kinda random.<P> I think I would do something like this if I could. So, good luck. <P> Oh, and where the FUCK is the DVD/Blu column?
-
Make more! Not bad at all. Good humor. Who directed? Some nice shots/camera work there.
-
That's cool (see what I did there?) you have him involved. <P> Although, if it's just a paid actor, that's kinda creepy.
-
Maybe after the film has been viewed, yes. But unless you're directly involved with the making of the film you're just going to nitpick and anticipate things you've already read.<P> It's one thing if the movie is based on a book and you were already familiar with the material. But I can't imagine wanting to read the script for something so secretive as Prometheus before actually seeing the film.<P> To each his/her/its own I suppose.

Barring his health issues I figure Harry has a sweet job.
by SoylentMean
I know I'm jealous of his movie centric vida.
-
I know positive comments really aren't the common trend in this maelstrom of mockers (mosh-pit of mumblers?). However, I was really impressed with this first episode. Glad I'm subscribed to the Nerdist Channel. The episode was very reminiscent of Pee-Wee Herman's Playhouse. I dug it. Let's see if you can get Lawrence Fishburn to reprise his role for you!
-
Keep it up, and don't let the trolls get you down. Some people have no friggin' manners around these parts, sheesh.
-
Kinda like a "What's hidden in this picture" challenge?
-
So cool. Well done, Harry. FUCK MICHAEL BAY! ;)

Of course I'm thinking about one particular theme. It's only the greatest holiday in the history of days and holes, the one, the only, HALLOWEEN! <P> You can wait until October though. I will allow that.

I won't go incredibly in-depth for time purposes, but I'll give this a solid B+, which is fantastic for a first-time effort. The medium of AICN does translate well to an "internet serial," and Harry pulls it off with a recipe of 2 parts camp, 2 parts solid information, and a liberal dose of hamming it up. In other words, he's having fun, and inviting us to join in. The addition of the Boiler character is a double-edged sword. In some ways, it adds to the show by giving a Pee-Wee's playhouse zaniness to the tone. That said, over-use of the Boiler could easily become tired and played out, so I'd limit that to special appearances. The bright spot, at least for me, was the Kong Bomb. Harry discusses much of his prop and memorabilia collection on the site, but this is one of the first times we've gotten a taste of just how much this guy owns. Newsflash, Harry: We want more. Whatever you got, big man. Those props are awesome, and a 2 minute "show and tell" presentation adds a lot, and will keep people coming back for more. It loses a few points for being a little awkward out of the gate, but these are things that will easily be ironed out with some on-camera experience by Harry. Once he becomes more comfortable, it will improve the overall show. Final Thoughts: Great effort that resulted in a solid product. In a world saturated with handicam internet review shows, Harry's offering a more polished show that doesn't take itself too seriously, but finds itself in an endearingly silly niche. Hopefully it sticks around.
-
I didn't expect to, but fuck me ragged, that was exactly what it said on the tin.. Oh but wouldn't it be easier to tweet tmnt rather than ninja turtles...yes,yes it would having just typed them.
-
Dude, that's a bitchin' shirt. Would make a cool wallpaper for the Mac.
-
i love it, Harry! and now i finally have the perfect nickname for that friend of mine who is EXACTLY like Boiler! thank you!! :D
-
As it first started I was about to go get my boys to come give it a watch. Looked like a fun show to get them involved. Then it went all adult. Such a shame as there isn't much out there for young kids.

Careful Boiler, dont insult Harry or he will ban you from the boards.

Not sure when I got unbanned but this is my first post back.
-
Is actually kinda what I expected
-
Now up for bid this versatile, dual action mop (with attached squeegee wringer), once used in the cleanup of Robert Downey Jr.'s "breakfast" on the set of Chaplin. We'll start the bidding at $20.
-
Seriously - that was fucking awesome. I mostly cringe out in the first minute or two on film site podcasts and shorts because the production values are so low and it becomes clear they're just winging it, but that was beautifully done, the tone was great, and you know, of course, your shit. Please ignore the haters here and keep it up.
-
Still waiting...

What is the science behind the reading helmet/pasta strainer?
by SoylentMean
Is it a time machine? Does it allow you to read through osmosis or just read really fast? Does it overly excite the hair follicles?
-
Very well done. Wish it were at least twice as long but I get the quick fix aspect of it. I haven't seen any of these other Nerdist online channel shows but I am guessing that is a trend since most of our attention spans are so short.
-
April 5, 2012, 10:22 a.m. CST
Soon he will get political with it. The Boiler will spit out Mitt Romney.
by tony
And ofcourse he is going to say Prometheus is great (Which I am really hoping is true). Im sure that review was bought and payed for a long time ago. But if the show stays true to the site and doesnt get too sidetracked by his opinions, I think it could be a good way to spend 5 minutes of my week.

Love Austin, but miss having a basement ... especially during the awful summers.
-
Or did I connect two different projects there? Other than that: - great debut - natural hosting talent - Father Geek is awesome - love the Boiler - thank god you got the sound right, so many shows have shitty sound these days constructive criticism: - agree with a comment that the framing could be a bit wider at times - some of the color grading is a bit flat, try to crisp it up a notch - try a film-like shutter and a bit more light - pacing could be quicker sometimes, but you'll get there once there's more content - segment the show a little more using jingles or lead ins for different sections But overall, great vibe, way to go!
-
...it had no information in it. Just a ginger nerd doing... um... what exactly? But I don't want to sound all negative. What I mean is: beef up the content, make it longer and it will be a good watch.
-
A lot of TBers have mentioned similarities to Playhouse, but it reminded me more of Hey Vern, It's Ernest. Not just the production, but how it was edited. Good job.
-
YOKO FIGURE SOLD SEPARATELY u just know it comes with that,Ghostbuster slime, that will make u impotent if u eat it

Honestly - You're More Suited to This Than to Writing...
by Read and Shut Up
...Harry, THIS is your niche. Let others write for AICN - or at least edit your work. Stick to TV/YouTube - you're likable and it feels very natural.

-
is the way to go for this kind of thing. I must admit though, I would like to hear you talk more about your view on the prometheus script. Also, I like the face you have given the angry cynical TB'er! Good work.
-
I know EXACTLY what you are referring to and can't even argue. That's me in 15 years.

First, nice job brother. You seem to be having a blast and I like the PeeWee's playhouse vibe. Are they going to be covering the marvel auction on Hollywood Treasure, the Profiles In History show on Syfy?

-
April 5, 2012, 10:57 a.m. CST
But seriously: The best part of the show dealt with Harry's strength...
by obijuanmartinez
...which in the opening minute or so felt like an updated channeling of Forrest J. Ackerman's expertise on movie lore, props, etc. Harry, you were spot-on here, and I'd love to see you focus more on this bit - it definitely plays to & showcases your strengths! Either way, congratulations...
-
Harry - thought you said that line made it into your first script? Did you get edited?
-
Harry is pretty sure you have next to no clue how much goes into that column Said so. to me. yesterday, when i complained to him what defuck was taking so long.
-
Even just a straight video blog, with none of the extra fun shots, would have been great. Harry, you come across better here in this clip than in writing (mostly) so I say keep it up!
-
Inspiring.

by Aaron
Seriously. If you are a true lover of this culture then you have done something like this with a camera in your basement or whatever. It is great.
-
It's the first one out of the gate - every show needs a few episodes to find its voice. One thought - get some guests in over the next few months to debate the merits of the summer blockbusters.
-

Opening reminded me of that Ray Bradbury HBO show
by Melanie Griffiths Sour Patch
I liked it. The opening totally reminded me of that Ray Bradbury HBO series from the 80's. Good sense of fun and I wasn't bored and thinking of surfing away. Nice job Harry! If you could work out with Hitfix how to get Moriarty to appear as a ghoul in chains or as a robot that would be super.
-

But what I want to know is if there is a basement in the Alamo?
by DanielnocharismaCraig
I just had to add that line. Just had to.
-
he has the right to gripe about its content. Not every defense has to be GO MAKE YOUR OWN SHOW/FILM IF YOU THINK IT SUCKED. What exactly was the point of the episode? no reviews? no new news? I liked it but thinking about it, i feel that it missed the point. It was just Harry sitting around in a basement (way to break free of that nerd stereotype) and showing off his goodies. THAT SAID, it was the pilot ep. i will definitely give it another go. i wish, dare i say it, it was longer. having more time might give it a format. As is, it seems a little ADD rattled.
-
Just keep doing this....I like it.

Fantastic! At first I thought this was shot in the 90s.
by aceattorney
Looking forward to more episodes, and please get the other writers to make guest appearances.
-
Part of the apeal of AICN is the amateurness. I would rather harry just deliver some off the cuff blather with some of the other guys than do this scripted stuff.
-
Keep them coming!
-
As the show is filmed the week prior to airing, and in today's age, if a story is a week old - then it's old news. I suspect Harry will be able to get a few actual news bits in the future that he will hold onto for his show - and might just surprise us once in a while. Come on, people, this is a first show, give the big guy a break, and maybe encourage him with ideas to make it even better instead of dumping on the guy for trying something new.
-
Some of the edit's were a little rough and it could be longer, but other then that, I thought it was pretty sweet. Looking forward to more episodes.
-
Give it 10-15 min instead of 5 and get some of the reviewers on here to dress up as their avatars and in a season or 2 it will gel. You dont have a network paying for this I hope? Like the one that will probably soon kill Comic Book Men? I actually like the show. More genre insights and less money and it too can work.
-
I guess Harry doesn't want to try to reach kids with this.....soooo then who the fuck is this meant for?
-
If it weren't for you, they wouldn't have this site to complain about everything on.
-
April 5, 2012, 11:33 a.m. CST
Get rid of Boiler's silly voice and have weekly guest cameos do it instead.
by Robert Evans
When you have the mods interview celebs, have them do a line or two of dialogue. or if they arent game, edit their words together to fit the dialogue, like Werner Brandis in Sneakers.
-
Oh man, i had a blast with this first episode. XD Definitly felt a tiny bit 'Peewee's Playhouse' inspired, which is a GREAT thing(Ahem, one of my all time favorite shows period) considering that's easily one of the most bug nuts and imaginitive brilliant shows to ever grace TV back in the early 90's. ;) Looking forward to episode 2! Hope things get even crazier.
-
...and it is Harry Knowles. Very nicely directed and produced. Anyone who visited the Ackermansion in person will sense deja vu.
-
be invited on the show and do scriptreviews on a regular basis. And I agree with Mr. Choppah on the Boilers voice issue. Guest cameos would be sweet!
-
I mean, some part were a bit goofy, but all in all it was entertaining and I could've watched it for much more than 5 minutes. Keep it up, Harry.
-
...wait at home while you see The Avengers?
-
The atmosphere created by whoever did the camerawork was the best part.
-
Also, an exorbitant amount of lawn gnomes.
-
Like Paul Zaloom. I mean Chris Hardwick already is so this would all make sense.
-
Good production value, but the content was very weak.
-
I actually watched he whole thing. It was good.
-
he's one butt ugly dude. Harry, you could be a vocal stand-in for Dr. Demento. Don't ever have him on the show....the world would implode.
-
This is why I miss Siskel & Ebert as a team. They were sincere, honest about their dislikes and passions. None of this goofy, pandering, gimmickry horseshit.
-
Looking good Harry, keep it up.
-
. . . they didn't think they could possibly be more envious of Harry and then BAM . . .

Holy shit, either grow it in full or shave it off. Don't frame that mug, it is too much a strain on traffic and passersby!
-
But I agree, somebody has to cut their nails!! Gross!
-
And cats.
-
This is just another self endulgent ego trip from Harry The Idiot. Obviously he has been too busy with this bit of look at me - look at me garbage to actually fix this site. He is never going to change whilst the small amount of sycophants on this site keep telling him how great he is without objectively looking at his contributions. Harry The Idiot's ego will just grow and grow, inversely proportional to his actual talent and skill as a writer and supposed movie expert. The one good thing to come out of this is that perhaps a few other people will see Mr Knowles for what he really is; a talentless hack who just for lucky by starting a website before anyone else did. I'm probably going to get banned again for saying this. Oh no! What a dramatic affect that will have on my life!!!
-
Harry attempting to stand...to be continued.
-
do it again, and again, and again. as somebody who has never seen a video of you before (having read you for more than ten years), my image of you has completely been re-drawn. i always loved to read your posts, but now i think i 'get' you a bit more than before. i absolutely loved it, and i would welcome the chance to see this series grow. ideally as big as this site.
-
Good production values, editing, sound. Looking forward to the next one! This stuff ain't easy to do, take a look at 99% of what shows up on YouTube.
-
That was pretty bad!!!
-
April 5, 2012, 12:06 p.m. CST
I think this show would be good as a half hour cable show- very entertaining - well produced - it would be popular - out it on AMC right after Comic Book Men!!!!!
by Michael Lunney
Harry- good shit man- you are a true geek who does not deserve all the shit you get here, and I would be proud to be your friend- you remind me a lot of me- and you look like an old college roomate of mine might look today, if he hadn't killed himself in the 90s. His name was Dan Silk- anyone who saw Romero's Dawn of the Dead saw Dan as a zombie getting hit by a Mack truck during the sequence where they are starting the Mack truck to block off the main entrance of the mall. Loooking forward to more of this stuff!!!!!!
-
No..I'm not kidding Solid production values with some good camerawork there and lighting. I feel you could at least double the length and make it 10 minutes, so it would be a bit less ' hasty' This is a job well done, Harry and you have another subscriber
-
This is on the nerdist channel. Fuck almighty some of you guys are stupid as fuck.
-
Been reading this site for a looong time now, and this is the Harry I've come to know through his writing: passionate about film, excitable, and not afraid to let his goofy geek flag fly. Keep it up - you'll get into the flow of it as you do more episodes. Some things the Doc would love to see: More props - maybe a "Prop of the Week" More of the AICN Regulars More actual news - just to put some meat on the bones Fun stuff, Head Geek!
-
Ah script girl haha. But seriously, I wanted to be cynical, but te nerd in me smiled. Well done Harry.
-
For your first online video venture, it actually was pretty good, and surprisingly, you have a natural on air personality that lends well to video. Nice to finally put a face and voice to the cloistered geek behind the reviews. I prefer hearing/seeing you talk instead of trudging through your long winded, geeked-out movie reviews that often border on superfluous. Make the video segment twice as long (10 minutes), and actually do a movie review or two instead of all the zip-zoom nonsense with the editing. Fun and easy to digest. keep it up.
-
I like it, Harry. But I'm a little confused as to your target audience on this one. This video is very cartoony and reminiscent of Pee-Wee Herman meets Svengoolie. If it weren't for all the swears, I would think your target audience is for kids. Fun video though, keep up the great work.

by DoctorWho?
And Harry gets to condense their whiny bitch-rants into pithy segments where he can dismantle them. Or at least try.<p> Next episode Harry... have Boiler grumbling about how Thor doesn't wear a helmet or how the star on Cap's shield is too small.

I do

Hey Harry!!! Just want to say congrats on the show. Keep them coming. I enjoyed it here at work while I'm stuck working for Gorns!!!

Very well done! I'm looking forward to the stripper poles that you're having installed for later episodes. A hot stripper or two in the background does wonders for repeat viewings. For comic relief, you can have a pile of coke on your desk and fling it behind you periodically to get them moving.

Harry I'm cursing you on AICN since 1998 but you redeemed yourself, partially...
by Ricardo
AICN was going to the shithole if you didn't pull out something like this, way to go. Good production value, although a bit short on content. Let's see what comes next. And PLEASE don't write your own material and review the whole thing several times later, so you don't fuck around and say Brian Cox was in Clockwork Orange or something.

summaries of talkback vitriol. I'd skim talkbacks for particularly inspired rants and give them to Boiler word for word...and I'd let him make good points from time to time. Let him represent talkback in all its furious, foul, emotionally and intellectually unstable, hilarious, and occasionally brilliant glory.

WOW !!! Just wish it was a regular half hour time slot, buuut its a weekly show running at least through the end of November with a shot at twice a week with the possibility of double, or even triple the length of individual shows. The family has been planning & work'n on this for some time now sooo its a relief to have the air'n finally get on the way. There will be tons of surprises in future episodes starting with next weeks installment annnd they will definitely be full of addictive geeky stuff with news, drop-in guests, collectibles, side trips, interviews, and sneak peeks at film, comics, toys & all the regular Aint It Cool lineup of interesting entertaining information... you'll never know what to expect when, so Stay Tuned right here...

Welcomed addition to the site. I like what I perceive as the new video segments between this and John Ary's segments. And I definitely felt that Pee Wee's Playhouse vibe too soylentmean, in a good way.

I do believe I spotted Danny Boiler first so I will await my "get out of banned state free card" in the mail too. ;D<p> BOILER ALERT!!

-
Just a little bit over-done. However, I think a few shows under your belt will help you figure out what works and what doesn't. Your passion comes through loud and clear Harry, and that's the most important part. When I say over done, I don't mean the ideas or presentation (like the boiler or the mini-fathergeek, those where good), I just mean stuff like the editing when the mail came in or the repetitive sloping shot of the boiler. Like I said, a few shows worth of experience will polish things right up. I look forward to seeing more of these. I think you guys can get all kinds of creative with this. Best of luck and stay passionate.

Your "needlessly harsh" characterization of Antonio Bannederas fits YOU to a tee! There's miles of talkbacks to prove it.<p> And my guess is...you don't have kids. At least I hope you don't.<p> Stay classy.

Oh, my God. When did Harry get so big? It seems like the last time I saw the man he was pretty thin. If he's not careful, he'll end up with diabetes after putting on that many pounds!

I look forward to more installments of you hiding in your basement from tornadoes.
-
I was completely prepared to slam you, but I found it fairly entertaining. I do agree that the additon of Script Girl would improve the sexiness factor of the show from it's current level of -15 up into positive territory. Just have her act as your new Mail Box and deliver letters and such to you on all fours with the mail in her mouth. We get all of the tits and none of her talk, it's a win-win. I also suggest upping your Set Design budget beyond X-Mas lights and a fucking cardboard box for Boiler. If you can afford all that movie memorabilia, put a little more green into presenting yourself better.

-
It's an episode 1, so we can expect improvements. But it was pleasant to watch. Keep on with the good work.
-
But I actually enjoyed it considering it was the first show. I think it will be essential viewing once you include more content and it develops. Please ignore the armchair critics; to paraphrase an old saying, "Those who create, do - those who can't, criticise." By the way, Harry - what happened to the little slot you used to have on Sky News in the UK? I used to watch that regularly.
-
Boiler: 2+2 = 22 Harry: No 2+2 = 4 Boiler: You win this round Harry, but I'll be back!!! If only it was that simple, eh Harry? May be in your bizarro world.
-
Reminded me of quality TV shows I watched as a kid. This was really professionally done, pat on the back for you guys nailing it.
-
Also, after watching the first minute or so....I gotta say, you really remind me of that Pawn Stars expert Mark Hall-Patton, lol. Really hope this takes off, it'd make a nice companion to AMC's Comic Book Men which I think runs a half hour too long. Good work Mr.Father & Headgeek sirs! Can't wait for the next installment.
-
Is that meant to invoke a certain personage with a hemophallic appendage? And did I just invent a word that will only ever make sense on talkbacks?

Five minutes is a good running time, though. Unless you get more talent on the screen, keep it at five minutes.

Harry now that you are Buds with Chris, Can you please try to get some exclusive "Lords of Salem" pics/news/vids/info?
by TheJudger
I really like Rob Zombie as a Filmcraftian. I'm pretty sure he's done with remakes entirely now. Say what you will about his Halloween's. I honestly believe his H2 was more creative than any of the sequels that franchise ever came out with. Ok, well Season Of The Witch was one hell of a creative detour and I love it so. Still H2 had balls. His original film creations are pretty entertaining and he really strives to be different and raw, he respects the audience more than most. I haven't seen smack all in regards to any news about his new film The Lords Of Salem. I have meet the man, but it didn't make me bias, as I was always a fan of his stuff before this. He is cool as shit, down to earth, and a true artist with a drive to entertain. Sure he might not be everyone's cup of whatever, but I think it sucks that he doesn't get more love around here. The guy tries to do it different, and as a horror buff and a film lover. Isn't that what fans of film look to support/champion. My soap box is breaking. It was worth the time to say something here though.

Okay, maybe this site isn't what we'd do with it. Boo frikken hoo. The big guy's making bank doing what he likes. Good for him. Must be nice. One more thing though. Grow a damn moustache. That Amish look is played. That's my only gripe.
-
This made me happy! I'm so glad to see you putting yourself out there like that. And doing such a good job. Your enthusiasm just shines through, and I love the fact that while you have this child-like enthusiasm driving you, there's ample swearing to balance it out!
-
That is very, very cool. Best thing I've seen on the site in a long time. Harry, your charm and enthusiasm for movies, comics and all things "cool" really shines through in this. Well done! I'm looking forward to seeing the next one.
-
...in every episode. I'll be there every week! (Though my Mac will probably end up looking like Randy Marsh's computer in that South Park episode)
-
A farting robot would be cool.
-
I still *hate* how far this website has fallen into disrepair, and I hate that no one seems to have tried to fix this shitty talkback code that was a result of your site getting hacked (you know, the kind of code that erases your entire post when you try and quote something, unless you know the secret). But, that was still pretty cool. It needs some work as far as structure goes- it seemed to just meander all over the place (movie prop, mail, boiler, script review, Pops, etc) without feeling like it was supposed to be an organic flow from one thing to the next. I do love that Boiler represents the angry talkbacker, and I like that both viewpoints will get represented on the show. I do love that Pops is tiny and lives in a tiny projection booth and can bring up movie clips at your beck and call. Very cool. Also, I love your McDonald's Fraggle race car. I had those as a kid too.

Harry doesn't use it as a tool to always get the last word in against the Talkbackers. Despite what many of the mods think about them, Talkbackers can have some great insight and some very valid points. I'd like to see that presented every now and then.

The Lighting and Mood Is Very Mid-80's (Goonies/Back To The Future)
by soladeo1
I have to say I am impressed! I love how the 'feel' of the episode's camera and framing, not to mention the moody lighting (with the visible dust slats of light from the windows) is a subtle homage to the young adult films of the mid-80s where Harry first fell in love with film. Anyone else see that?? I think in smallish doses Harry has some genuin on-screen chops. He's very knowledgeable, no doubt about that. I look forward to future episodes for sure! A lot of you are surprised at Harry's voice, some of you finding it appropo given his persona and some of your thinking it's not what you expected. Harry's voice fits him: Nerdy, impish, exciteable, with a noticeable Texas Twang *. * Note: ScoreKeeper's voice is very similar.
-
People rag on you all the time here, but you can see that we also respect quality. You have good stage presence and delivery...and very well produced piece...great job.
-
It takes place on a planet they call Zeus. It doesn't lead directly into Alien Harry's actually going to post a script review?!!
-
As many have stated, quality production values all around. I wasn't particularly engaged by the content, but hey, it's a first episode. I can't/don't expect that everything on AICN will cater to my every desire. I'll give a look when future installments arrive!

by conspiracy
There is potential here... My advice...don't do "News" as due to the time it takes to do these it'd be old by the time they aired. As others have said...stick to dispensing knowledge of geek film and film lore, with maybe some tidbits on current films;...it is what you love most, and honestly is what you are best at. We may question your reviews...but nobody will question your love of film geekery shit.
-
After Siskel died, you don't remember Harry sitting in balcony? I don't know if it's the makeup, but he looks much better now than he did then! Breezy, fun factoids - keep 'em coming, Harry.

by John_Cocktoasten
I had fun with it even though it was a little disconnected and I wasn't quite sure what the show was supposed to be about. I still enjoyed Harry's geek fest because of the sheer joy he puts into it.
-
You need some Vagina on this show as well...has to be a few Kari Wurher wanna-be's who will work for Taco Bell wages hanging around Austin...
-
Sorry Michael Bay is still a HACK!!!!!!!!!!
-
I love the whole Joe Bob Briggs/Pee Wee's Playhouse/MST fantasy deal going on with this. You don't get stuff like this anymore and I missed feeling I used to get watching shows done in a similar fashion. Great job! The set was great also!! One complaint...The time limit. It was over before it began...unfortunate.
-
But yes...Harry looks a little Healthier now. Keep it up Harold...healthy is good, an early death fucking sucks.

and just talk about shit you love. You have such a great passion for film and geek stuff that just doesn't come across here. I'm sure you already know this but don't listen to the hate. We love you, that's why we're here. Thanks.
-
you really think this was good? great, even? there were a couple potentially funny jokes, ruined by Harry's laughable comedic timing. for a group who shits on 99% of all movies, i am shocked at all the positive feedback. i'd rather watch dumb and dumberer and Zohan back to back than sit through this again.
-
...and I really miss the old KING KONG wallpaper. I would prefer a longer episode though. And, of course, less monster wall that pukes toys. However, this show could be big on G4 television! I would watch it.
-
Lose the gimmicks, it just seems like a joke. And it shouldn't be. You LOVE film. so fucking SHOW it man.

And does this mean that Harry has pointy nipples?

-
That would drive about 17% of the talkbackers heads to go all Scanners style.
-
Enjoyed it! I'm a subscriber! :-)
-
But I confess I kept thinking of Syndrome.
-
I really like his hair, and coupled with the glasses he looks pretty cool. Some of those hand mannerisms are Cameron-esque, though... You know, Cameron from Modern Family.
-
Possum.
-
I liked the set, the music and the angry thing in the basement. Well put together. Very entertaining!!!!
-
And it's probably the main reason I still read this site. (That, and to see the TBers whine) Cynicism is such an easy path to take. It's always nice seeing someone talk about movies without relying on such a negative from of thought. Don't lose that Harry. It keeps you head and shoulders above the scum who post anonymously (Myself included to some extent) Anyways, ep 1 was surprisingly enjoyable. I dig the playhouse vibe. I suppose the best compliment I can give is this; I wish it had been longer, because I definitely would have watched more. Congrats.
-
Probably the best compliment I can pay is I wish it was longer. Look forward to next week!

This was great! Awesome set, cool music, great cinematography and Harry is a very likable dude.
by 88mph
-
That was most unexpected. I'm sure you guys are tired of hearing all the criticism about how AICN doesn't do the "cool" and (spoily) stuff it used to...but that was a nice bone to throw. I understand that some of that stuff served to destroy certain movies before they saw the light of day...and unfortunately in this biz the failure of any genre film (good or bad) affects the rest of the projects in the pipeline...but I think all early buzzed also did an equal amount of GOOD. I've grown old enough to learn some self-control and stay out of spoiler territory if I really want to (and thank GOD I did for tonight's screening of CABIN IN THE WOODS). I think most of the folks who still visit the site do as well. It's harder than ever with Twitters and Facebooks and all that...but I think that whole social media aspect helps out a lot too. I dunno. My two cents.
-
I remember reading about the comedy central show back in the day, but was never able to see it, (not even sure if it aired or not, or what the story is there)....but anyhow, i just wanted to pipe in here and say i thought you showed some real promise.....you're not quite there yet, and have yet to find your real onscreen 'voice' but man...i LOVE where this show is going... I'll be watching......which probably isn't a surprise...i imagine most of your readers will check it out.....i've been coming here for almost 13 years now, just about every day....
-
That was fun. I've been coming here since 1997. Nice to see some of your "toys" that really reflects your love of movies. Keep up the great work.
-
Seriously. So awesome. I know Harry isn't an MST3K fan, but the set is oh so Best Brains Satellite of Love style in the absolute most delightful way. This is certainly something that's missing from so much online movie "critic" sites today, too: a genuine, heartfelt enthusiasm and love for movies, and a charitable view toward things. Only Harry could out-geek the geeks with the TMNT argument. It's fantastic to see your dad involved, too. However, the Awesomeness of Jay always stands to overpower everything he touches, which is why I am guessing he's been miniaturized to minimize that affect.
-
To be fair, Harry, I don't think Michael Bay was really implying that the MUTAGEN was from an alien race. He seemed to be pretty strongly implying that the Turtles themselves were in the movie. As much as I enjoyed your exchange with Boiler, it felt an awful lot like you kind of twisted the argument to suit yours better...
-
He's weird.
-
I LOVE the idea that Boiler represents the bitchy TalkBackers. Inspired! :-)

And who are these censors trying to protect kids and shit? Uh, been coming to aicn since I was a Kid, and here I am today. They'll survive, trust me.... Great job Harry. But tits, man... tits...

Best thing to come to this site since Coaxial. Also pops would make a fantastic Santa.

well played sir.
-
ever since Harry gave The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull an overwhelmingly positive review I've been forced to scrutinise everything he does. That or just avoid altogether. Even the good people that made that film admited it was a load of old boo hockey. So I wouldn't be particularly interested in Harry's opinions. Save it Harry, I for one don't want to know. YOU are the reason John Carter is the biggest loser of all time!
-
Does that mean we'll never see what that attention whore has in store for us in her chesticle region ever again?
-
Because AICN made such a big deal about her, pretending she was a contributor doing work for US, the AICN readership, when in reality she was doing it for *herself*, on her her own YouTube account, completely independent of AICN. It was a dark time for this website, relying on the boobs of an unrelated person to try and get people to come here and read its lackluster stories. Of course, all that being said, her boobs were absolutely magnificent. And one talkbacker who was particularly defensive about her got to play with them, I'm sure.
-
I joked about how he'd star in a remake of "He Knows You're Alone" with her....and end up doing something resembling necrophilia with her after she rejects him, resulting in my banning by Moriarty. <p> Those were dark days, indeed. Anyone who wants Script Girl to make a guest appearance in these videos is a certified retard. Fact!
-
I signed up for a login and password, just to say that Harry knowles is truly one of the most disgusting humanoids I've ever seen. SHAVE OFF THAT HIDEOUS NECK BEARD. Seriously. Just....oh, man. Just thinking about your pasty ginger sack of flesh makes me gag. I've heard people talk about how your wheelchair bound corpse reeks like BO from 40 feets away. You take everything that is cool and artistic and wipe your fat sticky fingers all over it. Just shut up.
-
Yeah, she disappeared from the site years ago, but she was quirky, sexy, and fun. I think you need a female host like that. Oh, and trim the beard down a bit. You kinda look like a hipster with it, and I don't like hipsters much.
-
More, please!
-
THis is the final prove of why Harry is the worst critic in the world . Please bring Quint and Capone
-
April 6, 2012, 1:33 a.m. CST
that was awesome, but didnt i see that hairdo in The Incredibles?
by Arcadian Del Sol
dont wear a cape, Harry. You'll get sucked into Boiler.
-
fuck you for calling him a film critic of any kind
-
4 Hours of nonstop Jar Jar would be better than the the thirty second I spent watching the beginning of this shit.
-
harry, i will see you in your basement next time, you friggin psycho!
-
Anything with the episode 1 tag couldn't get any worse. C'mon Harry, stick to writing please. If you had to review something like this yourself you would have trashed it. The jokes are not funny, the pacing is off, the acting is hammy and it tells you NOTHING you didn't know before. Quite silly and brings your site down too...
-
May I suggest a Mary Hart guest appearance?
-
The fact that I was able to sit through it in its entirety is just one thing. I already like what you've got in place (esp. the boiler, fanboys will give you enough potential material that it'll be quite easy to give him a spot on every episode) and the production quality is pretty good. I guess this is the next logical step for you and I wish you the best in your new venture! I'll definitely be looking fwd to the next eps you've got lined up.
-
...but I see you are trying to distance yourself from the cult of Hate-Michael-Bay. Why, what has he done to derserve such fairness, you wise, disinterested judge you?
-
...where the heck is this Muppet test footage..? The Blade II review was, imo, one of AICN' defining moments. I can't find it online so, if this is in your possession, please roll the film! Btw, you remind me of my (also) rock'n'roll dad (except he dyes his hair and beard purple); he looks like a psychedelic General Custer! Btw, does Harry own any Evil Dead memorabilia..?
-
Much better production values than I thought it would have. Just the right tone & style for this type of show.(You might want to lose the salty language so it appeals to a broader audience though.) As a short filmmaker for many years, I only had 2 minor problems; the cutaway to the Avengers poster @ 1:49 didn't quite work. And the "Space-Age Helmet" gag was a bit unclear @ 1st as to what it was enabling you to do. Other than that, great 1st effort, look forward to seeing more.
-
Wasn't that bad. Would watch more.
-
is a Kevin Smith action figure that comes to life like Chucky and bleats/taunts "You'll never be me, Knowles! Try as you might, I will always outgeek you! I played the cool computer nerd in Live Free Or Die Hard, and you played a severed head in Ghosts Of Mars! Eat my dust, tons o'fun!". Then Harry goes outside to his backyard, and feeds the offending action figure into a wood chipper like that one baddie did to the other baddie in Fargo(and there was much rejoicing). Homage excelsior! Make it happen, Harry.
-
video leaked of creepythinman's wedding party! http://www.worldstarhiphop.com/videos/video.php?v=wshh4CcbV55Rv5UlkGTE go wildebeests!!!

nice work harry, as always..

Nicely done amigo! Now where are the babes?

With your network and your level of access I think this could be a good series.
-
that might be the funniest AND the meanest comment i've seen this year. or perhaps ever.
-

The only problem is the script is fake http://www.prometheusforum.net/fake-leaked-script.txt
by Jaster Mareel
Just sayin'....that looks pretty bad for you Harry. But it's FAAAAAAR from the first time this has happened.
-
Love the "Tales From The Crypt" vibe. Good on ya Harry!
-
writing, running a website, anything that takes structure or professionalism is not for you. Talking about your passions, that suits you perfectly
-
Loved it!! I come here mostly for the docbacks & the environment it provides. I really loved your show, Harry, & I hope you can keep it going. Really liked the kong bomb, by the way!! Good to see you're doing well yourself. Thanks.
-
I would rank it behind an episode of Script Girl. Brutal and embarrassing.
-
I even laughed a few times. Seriously, well done! Thats how you silence naysayers, by doing great work. Everything about that was professional, Harry, and I mean that in a normal sense and a Bale sense. The possibilities for this are endless. Get ready to have a 'moment', cause I think this is only gonna get better and gain more traction and viewers. Again, haters gonna hate, but that was very well done.
-
sorry harry. but it's true
-
April 6, 2012, 1:40 p.m. CST
So Harry made his web series debut talking about an officially fake script?

or something (and its long list of ridiculous whinny posts), and this is my first actual contribution to the website. I was prompted to sign up because I wanted to say "It's about time." This is what the website needed...... back in 1999.

April 6, 2012, 5:36 p.m. CST
i liked it. harry is not a bad presenter. his dad looks like a cool old dude.
by AsimovLives
could be the start of something good. and really, the furnace thing, it's an obvious jab at the more vocal critical voices found in here who can be pretty voracious about their dislikes and what they find wrong in a movie or movie-to-be (ahem!!). Though it also looked like a desperate atempt to defend the undefensablde: michael fucking piece of shit bay! Anyway... could be the start of something cool. let see how it turns out. good luck, AICN and Harry.
-
sign me up
-
April 6, 2012, 5:38 p.m. CST
wouldn't it be cool if Harry interviewed some of the more proeminent talkbackers in this show?
by AsimovLives
let there be faces behind the names. or in this case, nicknames/handlers/whatever.
-
Unlike his website -- that baby-shit-brown eyesore where the exclamation points jut out like the rusty nails in an abandoned barn -- the web series is professionally produced by the usually tasteful folks at Nerdist.com. Still, much like the website, the five-minute premiere episode is wretched, a trip to the heart of geekdom that is intended to be whimsical but instead comes off as a braggy bleat from a needy fool.
-
April 6, 2012, 6:56 p.m. CST
Yes, more of this please! Very good job for the first episode, but it needs to be longer.
by Mr. Moe
At first I was like 'WTF?', but as soon as it won me over it ended.
-
Harry reminds me of Sam Kinison (this is a compliment) Harry looks much younger than I thought (compliment again) This gave me a very Tales From The Crypt feel - which was cool. Also, funny that you mentioned Bill paxton, since he was in one of the most memorable Crypt episodes. And also.. that talking oven. Remined me of the scary oven in Home Alone. Am I off on this?
-
April 6, 2012, 7:06 p.m. CST
Harry the SITE is cool, but thats the dumbest shit I've seen in years...
by ShakaLaka Lambo
For real, who told you that was a good idea??? And why are you idiots applauding it? Its the LACK of crap like this that has allowed geek culture to gain the acceptance of the respectable society. Nice going Harry youve j ust set geek kind back 50 years, God that shit is lame.Go ahead and ban me if you want to, hell after that shit I'm considering banning my damn self!
-
Oh, this site is still hard to write comments on. I tried to quote the SF Weekly article above but all that actuially ran in the comments here is the quote with no context. WTF? Was this coded by 1998 monkeys? Anyway the article is mean and funny and worth googling and Harry can't ban it for telling the truth about his shilling.
-
April 6, 2012, 7:39 p.m. CST
That sf article is great, How the hell...blade 2 and huh? Meesa luved him!??
by ShakaLaka Lambo
But then I remembered Harrys thought Obummer would be the greatest president ever...how's that working out for us hmmmm..not to good, I will give you one thing Harry, the "show"wasnt as bad as our commie in chief's first (and hopefully last) term!
-
Not so sure I agree with you Michael Bay defense, but I like the show a lot! I hope it'll be successful!

Hot girl ones too...like a pizza delivery girl skit or something...yeah....
-
I enjoyed it. Your enthusiasm reminds me of myself. Keep it up!
-
Sorry Harry, love the site, but that was the worst thing I've seen in a long time. Misguided setup, awful fake forced humour, patronising tone, very little actual information, and, sorry to say, bad presenting... The whole thing is a big mistake.
-
Seriously...do we really need live action Harry? I'll stick to Half In The Bag!
-
Bad. Like 'Ed Wood' style bad, only without the fun. Just felt way forced-yet-pretentious. I tried, Harry... I really tried. I can't even rant on it, it would be like beating up a kid with Down's Syndrome---Ultimately, just sad and pointless.
-
April 7, 2012, 12:35 p.m. CST
shakalakalambo, stfu. Seriously. Set "Geek Kind" back? That's the nerdiest shit I've ever heard on this site.
by Mr. Moe
-
I look forward to see where this format goes! The genre could use more stuff like this.
-
I think it would do well with a 15 minute adult swim format, I think a full 30 would be too long-but really that depends on how many different bits you work in like Danny Boiler. Keep it up!
-
It's modern, slick you came off well... ...now if only you had a website to match!
-
And don't attempt witty remarks boy, don't you have school tomorrow.
-
Great job Harry.
-
1. I really enjoyed the way it felt like an old-school horror show like Tales from the Crypt or Elvira or something. (I'm from the UK so if this format is very commonplace in the US, apologies - it seemed like a welcome throwback to me..we don't have 'desk shows' in the UK). 2. Production value seemed surprisingly high. Direction was pretty good. 3. Harry, you looked well man, like...better than I expected given that all I know about you usually is a few old terrible pictures, being in/out of hospital and your 'look' on the animated gifs. In this you looked, dare I say, CURRENT! *** I'd seriously consider doing these once a week every week forever if I were you. I wouldn't be surprised if you got a TV show out of it. Also, just a thought: maybe save your reviews for these videos? That way you don't end up repeating what's already been on site.
-
Keep' em coming!
-
That was... Perfect. I didn't know what to expect but I quite enjoyed it. Please do more, Harry. I feel like this is really your thing--much more than anything else I've seen from you on this site. Kudos!
-
April 8, 2012, 5:55 a.m. CST
why do 80% of the talkbakers on here do nothing but hate on the writers and harry here?
by CoolerKing72
Oh i know why. Because your all cunts. Great work Harry and Co. I may not agree with some of your reviews but you guys love film and your alright by me. Regards from the UK

In Episode 2, Harry should titty-fuck that Script Girl chick (remember her?)
by Mr. Pricklepants
-
That reminds me of when I was like 10 and me and a buddy of mine used to make mix tapes and "play dj" in between the songs. That was back in like 86, so the production value was about the same. Wow, Harry, all that intense rehab really got you all shredded up, bro. Didn't you do the whole lap band/stomach stapling too? Sure you did, brudda, sure ya did. Either you are hard core full of shit or you are the only human being on this planet that can do the lap band AND go through months an months of intense physical therapy and not lose a pound. I love ya Harry, don;t get me wrong. But if you're gona talk about goin through all this shit, you can't expect people to refrain from remarking on just how superhumanly ineffective it has been on you. And have you ever thought about dying you hair another color. Like......anything else??? Been a member of your site for over ten years man, and I do have love for you but that hair and your bullshit physical therapy/rehab stories do you a disservice whenever you show yourself. You could go quarter speed on the reha and still see results.
-
April 9, 2012, 9:28 a.m. CST
yeah there is no rehab or lap-banding involved. lap band would show results.
by zom-bot.com
unless you just totally ignore the 'don't eat over x amount' rules and keep eating a ton of food, and end up shitting yourself every 15 minutes... everyone that has ever gotten that done loses weight. harry looks the same size or bigger.
-
this morning i thought to myself...hey i should go check out the DVD lists, i bet after a month there will be at least two to look at. but know, no updates since feb. its ok though. ill just watch this video a few more times...you bastard.

where you won't wear a shirt and you'll cry.

Not really a true geek if your siding with Bay.

That would make it Must Watch YouTube.

Any chance you're somehow emulating Half in the Bag and RLM's recent output?
by Denty420
I still think it needs lesbians.

I dig it!

Nicely done, Harry. This is only the pilot, give the guy time to smooth out the wrinkles. Wankers.

Your love of movies shines through. I really enjoyed that. And good production too. off to see ep.2

What a fucking joke, Harry. Your shameless self-promoting bullshit is woefully, laughably puerile and disgraceful.
