Everyone's In For DUMB AND DUMBER 2!!
The Kidd here...
The Farrelly brothers have been talking for awhile about possibly revisiting the lives of Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunn for a sequel to DUMB AND DUMBER. There's been some interest expressed by Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, and a script was being worked on late last year by Sean Anders and John Morris (HOT TUB TIME MACHINE). Well, it looks like things took a big step forward over the weekend to DUMB AND DUMBER actually happening in that Peter Farrelly told Coming Soon that the follow-up is set to start shooting by the end of the year.
"We're getting set to shoot DUMB AND DUMBER 2 in September. It's the first sequel we've ever done and we've got Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels back."
I've always been a big fan of DUMB AND DUMBER, so I'm looking forward to seeing where this idiotic pair is in their lives almost 20 years later. If anything, it'll at least help get rid of the awful taste left behind by DUMB AND DUMBERER: WHEN HARRY MET LLOYD, which the Farrellys had nothing to do with.
I realize the Farrellys haven't exactly set the world on fire since they opened their careers strongly with DUMB AND DUMBER, KINGPIN and THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY, and they've largely been coasting on the reputations built by that trio of films, but I'm hopeful they might finally be able to bring us a comedy that is actually funny once again by going back to what got them started.

Frankly, Kingpin was only ok and I didn't like Something About Mary at all, though I know a lot of people did. Dumb & Dumber is completely charming and hysterically funny. I think it was the mean-spiritedness of Mary that really turned me off to it.

It's a shame, being from New England and having strong roots in Rhode Island... I loved Dumb and Dumber, Outside Providence and the Farrelly's. But they've put out stinker after stinker... gotta wonder if this is the last-gasp attempt to keep their careers alive.

Their Three Stooges movie that's about to drop is going to rake in boatloads of money, despite being far removed from our culture by now. Most likely will even have a sequel. I'm not a huge Three Stooges fan, and I don't know many around that are, but this movie is going to succeed. I can't say why, but I just have that feeling. The same way I thought Alvin and the Chipmunks and the Smurfs, being a thing of the past, would fail, they are just stealing away our money, and this one will too.

Borat is still number 1 in my heart, but D&D would have to be in the top 5. I saw it in the theatre with a group of college buddies. I remember a kid laughing so hard in front of us he puked all over the floor, and it stunk so bad we changed seats. Then that Jeff Daniels in the bathroom scene - no lie, that almost exact same scenario had happened to one of my buddies not long before that - at a girls' house, he plugged her toilet when she yelled into the bathroom not to use that toilet, it didn't flush. We all laughed at him and the scene simultaneously.

Why can movies only have 2 directors if they're brothers?

Not that I mind, it's just always struck me as a bit odd that there are so many brother director pares, but you don't really see many other movies with multiple directors and I'm not counting anthology films that are essentially multiple short films, or movies where the director was fired and another had to take over. Sin City is the only one I can think of.

Creepy indeed..I actually felt bad for the guy cause he obviously doesn't get it. Something about the whole '2x or more' her age thing...or something... But, in an indirect way, Emma Stone (with red hair) does have a slightly passing resemblance to the very lovely Lauren Holly (one of my favorite aspects of D&D, natch). But since when is this the "funniest movie of all time"? Really? More so than Pet Detective? Or..gasp..other comedies? Funny yes but the funniest? Well, subjective and all that... Oh and Jeff Daniels looks to be doing an interesting new HBO series about journalists and politics.

When Dumb and Dumber came out, slapstick, over-the-top, physical humor were huge. This is what dominated the 90's, and is also why Jim Carrey was so big and this movie was such a hit (Not the only reason, but a big one). Unfortunately for this film, the type of humor that is big now is the awkward-type, random-yet-sophisticated, none-sense stuff that we see in Apatow movies. It's more clever (Evidenced by the failure of garbage like Jack and Jill, Three Stooges remake, etc). Not to say I myself wouldn't see a sequel to one of my favorite comedies of all time in an instant, it's just something to consider. The times are a-changin, so hopefully the Farelly Bros have taken this evolution of humor into consideration for their new script.

Luckily I snuck into it after watching 2 Fast 2 Furious (iirc), which wasn’t great either, but at least I didn’t pay to see Dumb and Dumberer.

Just the thought of those two getting back into character is going to be my bestest christmas present this year...Every time I finish watching D&D I get sad because there's not more movies like it. As much as I love teenagers saying bad words and Judd Apatow trying to make me chuckle and cry at the same time, there's just nothing that compares to laughing my ass off watching Lloyd and Harry do stupid shit for a couple of hours... it's just the best, and one of the few comedies I come back to over and over again (and still laugh my ass off).

I had NO idea they made Outside Providence. There's quite a few good parts in that movie actually. My personal favourite is when he's leaving the house with his bong and tells his dad it's a musical instrument, his dad's poker buddies ask to play them a few notes so he tries to. Come to think of it, I really enjoyed Outside Providence.

Funnier than Blazing Saddles, or Young Frankenstein, Monty python's Holy Grail,The Man with Two Brains,Better Off Dead, or about 10 other films that I can easily name? Nope. But I'm always hoping Carrey can make a comeback. I just think the Farrelly's ran out of juice a long time ago, and were one upped by Judd Apatow's gang in the raunchy but funny category a long time ago.

The prequel did have (only) one funny moment. And, I think 3 Stooges are going to do pretty well. Look at something like Paul Blart, it should not have been that successful.

Make it more like a dark comedy. Harry and Lloyd have gone absolutely nowhere thanks to their idiocy and they have the alcohol addictions and credit card debt to prove it. Thanks to mortgaging 130% of their condo's value before the sub-prime meltdown and blowing the extra money on strippers and porn site subscriptions, they're forced onto the streets and begin dealing meth and squatting in an abandoned toilet factory. Things seem bleak until they find a roll of toilet paper with a mysterious coded message on it, apparently promising millions from the toilet scam that shut the factory down. Can they decipher the clues before the cops and/or their meth suppliers track them down? Turns out the message on the toilet paper just ends up being a bunch of shit smeared on the paper, leading to nothing. As all hope seems lost, the duo is saved by a fellow squatter seeing the image of Jesus in the shit-stained toilet paper and Harry and Lloyd make a killing duping gullible Christians into paying a dollar to see the holy toilet paper shit-Christ. The end. Oh, and they bang a hot nun, too.

But they need to be part of a creative team that works exclusively together. Jim Abrahams and the Zuckers were credited together, for instance. They USUALLY are brothers, but is not the norm. You could also be credited with other directors if each directed a separated piece of the movie (like The Twilight Zone). What the Director's Guild will not accept is 2 directors, let's say, Spielberg and Nolan, doing directorial work for a single time in a movie. That is not allowed. This is why we haev only 1 director listed on Poltergeist!

I'm deffinitely in the camp of the original being one of the funniest ever made. I'd be hard pressed to come up with even 5 movies I'd consider better... Volstaff - I'd agree on Monty Pythons Grail, I'd say D&Dr holds it's own against Steve Martin classics, and personally I was never a fan of Brooks' heavy pun humor.

would be my choice for a Carrey sequel. The more I think about it, the more cool I think it could be. We never really new much about Chip. How would he handle the new media age? Not well, I'm guessing. Cable Guy is my favourite Carrey movie, and I've never quite understood why more people didn't dig on it.

He's one of those "actors" whose schtick has gotten slim with the public. Going back to a familiar hit is usually a sign of a flagging career. What Carrey needs is to push the envelope a bit more, take on something more serious. He can actually act, but he's always had to put some kind of weird spin on his more dramatic work that distances us from the feelings, as if he doesn't quite trust his own talent. That's my take on it. Still, D&D was a guilty pleasure of stupid fun for me, so I'm hoping they actually make a good film here. I have my doubts.

Killed some of my brain cells. I'm convinced, given how I cam out of it in some strange, altered state of mind. I had this scene looping in my head for two hours afterwards which to this day,perfectly sums up what the film did to me. I simply cannot see myself wanting to damage more brain cells because some person has a psychotic sense of nostalgia, and the ability to make nightmares real.

anybody is beating down his door to have him star in something serious for anything but chump change. He's in the same boat Tom Cruise was in in not having a hit for a while. So they go back to the well that you're bankable in to be able to generate the power to get the other stuff. As such, here is Tom is M:I-4, and here is Jim in D&D2.

It's a great film. Bill and Chevy are quite funny in it, but they are secondary characters in an American Pie-type coming of age film about a caddy.

A few years ago I was the sober driver guy for my wife's birthday and the last place our group stopped was this bondage-a-go-go type place in Minneapolis. So here I am completely sober and surrounded by drunks, gyrating leather dudes, bored dominiatrix chicks, and my 350 lb friend dry humping everything in sight...including me, when all of a sudden on the big screen at the front of the place comes Dumb and Dumber complete with subtitles. I stood there and watched for an hour and a half completely oblivious to everything else going on around me. Made my night. Wary of the sequel however...that kind of magic may be difficult to bring back.

Not so sure how this will turn out nearly twenty years after the original, but I am anxious to catch up on the exploits of Lloyd and Harry and see what they've been up to. Pretty good news.
