Lucas On STAR WARS VII, VIII, And IX: 'Never!'
Merrick here...
With so much recent activity on the STAR WARS front...the release of Episodes I-VI on Blu-ray late last year, the ongoing STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS animated series on Cartoon Network, the upcoming issuance of KINECT STAR WARS for XBOX 360, and persistent chatter about the looming STAR WARS: UNDERWORLD live action television series...it's hard to wrap one's brain around the possibility of never again seeing fresh STAR WARS movies on the big screen.
Nonetheless, George Lucas seems to be sticking to his recently stated intent to more or less step aside from big-project filmmaking (not sure how the exceedingly complex UNDERWORLD doesn't qualify, but whatever) - a notion newly validated by the TMZ embed below.
A cameraman asks Lucas when we'd see the legendary STAR WARS VII, VIII, and IX... rumored to return some of the original trilogy's cast for adventures set far after RETURN OF THE JEDI. Lucas' answer was quite concise: "never."
See for yourself...
Does he mean it? If Lucas is calling himself "retired," how does this impact a possible INDIANA JONES 5 - which as recently as February he'd said he needed to start working on? My suspicion is that Lucas will never be able to fully divorce himself from creative enterprises , and may (** at most **) merely step back to take more of a supervisory capacity on future endeavors. Whether this means he'll never, evvvvveeerrr let ANYONE make more STAR WARS movies but him? That certainly looks to be the case. Although, personally, I wouldn't be surprised if some other film set in the STAR WARS universe came down the pipeline at some point. Whether our of irresistibility, or necessity.
More as we know more.

I'm halfway through Clone Wars S4 now and it's probably the best the show has been. Who needs ep 7-9?
by Al
I think the episode in the middle chunk of the season with Krel the Crazy-Ass Jedi General was actually some of the best damn stuff they did on the show. He wasn't a Sith, just off his rocker, which happens in war. And, as I mentioned a few minutes ago, Favreau as the Death Watch Leader may be the most menacing character he's ever played, and he's actually pretty damn good. Hope they don't kill him off. So, yeah, don't need episodes 7-9, there's lots of wiggle room for offshoot products which will probably be better than what 7-9 would be anyway.

Anyway, the "sequel trilogy" would stomp all over the face of the EU and that would really suck for fans

Just because, y'know, they invested years and dollars into the continuing adventures of Luke Skywalker & Co. (and their kids!). In fact, aren't most EU stories now just the Solo / Skywalker kids? They've really drained that well fairly dry by now.

I'd be talking crazy shit just so the "reporter" wasn't able to ask more dumb questions. I have no doubt that, or something similar, is what Lucas was doing here. And if he really IS retired, I'm sure that'll last as long as it takes him to get bored with and/or feel unfulfilled with his body of work.

Good for him. They won't happen for the same reason Tolkein abandoned LOTR 2
by Logan_1973
JRR started penning a LOTR sequel before realizing that any further adventures would diminish the deeds of the characters in the original stories. George knows that JEDI was the final cap to the timeframe he wanted to create in. Yes, we may see UNDERWORLD or maybe even pre-MENACE stuff, but never anything past VI.

Best thing that could happen is one-shot movies by different directors.

How cool would a Luke Skywalker (in his old age) movie directed by Darren Aronofsky be? How cool would be a StarKiller movie directed by Ridley Scott? Or even the Thrawn storyline directed by Speilberg? Of course, the scripts would be done by someone other than Lucas. This would work. This would be cool. Star Wars could be cool again.

Homelessness is up 40 percent. Alderan refugees are given a new colony on the planet Issurden to the dismay of the people who already inhabit that planet. But the Senate urges that Alderans colony be recognized since the destruction of their own planet at the hands of the Empire. This cause a rift in the Senate but the people are weary of causing another seperatist movement. As tensions run high the Republic is faced with the reality that the Empire had squandered most of it's resources on both Death Stars and it's massive fleet and armies. It also has a shortage of employment since the New Republic is only interested in peace keeping and disarmament. Without the massive peace keeping force we see crime rise as the syndicates begin to claim planets and territories as their own. The Black Hand openly kidnaps politiicians and citizens alike in their own star systems. Poverty reaches a record high. The galaxy calls out for justice and a new hero. But who will answer the call???
-
Why? Because it's entertainment and you're not fucking entitled, regardless of what you believe. We have 3 great movies and 3 mediocre movies. People complain about new films. People complain there are no new films. The man is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. He tried again and failed in most of your eyes, to inexplicable venom. Enjoy what you will, stop complaining and move on. And the general buzz (not sure if he ever explicitly stated this) was that he would retire from big budget movies after Indiana Jones 5.
-
cause most people would rather see a well written, well directed, well-acted movie movie that Lucas didn't touch. It could easily break records. When he dies this may all change. Let us pray.
-
Like we need a Back to the Future remake or a Ghostbusters III. Time to let it go.

He's getting old. He obviously doesn't need the money. And look at all the vitriolic backlash he has gotten from the prequel trilogy. Why would he want to invest another 10(or more) years into making 3 more films that have a 99% chance of being absolutely panned by fans worldwide? I wouldn't do it either, if I were him. Don't get me wrong... it would be cool to see. Especially if he just wrote the films and let some substantial genre directors lens the films. But like I said, I don't blame the guy for not wanting to.

Myself, George and Kasdan came up with a third trilogy in the mid 90's
by JettL1993
This was before the prequels had been written and our drafts wouldn't make much sense now in their present form (specifically because of mentions of the Fett's as well as papatines rise to power) but In 2006 George asked me to rewrite the scripts in a way that they possibly could be filmed and fit into the current saga. They would contain very little of the skywalkers (Luke only appears in the middle of the first film and at the end of the third film, and Leia is only seen in the second film). George is very picky about what he does with the franchise and he's still uncertain if he'd film my script rewrites (Kasdan's name no longer appears on the draft at the request of Lucas) but I can say as a dear friend of George and someone thats played a part in the development of the entire saga that there's still a chance the films could be made within the next 10 years I sure hope they do as i'm very proud of the story we'd set in place

God I hate TMZ. If there were ever to be episodes VII, VIII, and IX it would have had to have been filmed in the early 90's at the latest. Last time I saw Hammill wield a lightsaber was in Jay and Silent Bob strikes back and thats the way I want it to stay. Do a CG version of the Thrawn Trilogy, but lets let Star Wars breathe a few years as a live action movie and bring it back in a different time frame with new characters. I'm with the legions of fans that would love to see an Old Repbublic movie personally.
-
I'm not exactly a prequel fan (Ep 3 and that's it) but I love the Clone Wars cartoon. At it's best, it's a great serial adventure that captures some of that Ep4 sense of excitement. I want another Star Wars Animated show. Place it between Ep 5/6, Shadows Of The Empire style. I also want an Indiana Jones animated series. Base it on the series of books that detailed his life after college. And while you're at it, make a Red Tails series. Who wouldn't want a WW2 aviator-themed animated series? I'm sure many think I'm being sarcastic, but I'm not. He hasn't had great luck with movies. But he's had tremendous luck in the EU verse. Most of it turns out great. Focus purely on that. Oversee it, but let others write/direct.

Hungar Games Is Better Than 4 of The 6 Star Wars Films
by Media Messiah
Return of The Jedi and the Star Wars prequels sucked, and I just found it ironic that a book series made for kids and teens, is actually more adult, has more integrity, is better written, and is more emotional, than most of the Star Wars films--that series being The Hunger Games? The original Star Wars film had it right, the emotional tone, and then Empire...was all the more challenging and emotionally gripping, but all went wrong with Jedi, and it has been all down-hill ever since, so I don't feel sorry if we never see a new Star Wars production ever again. If its own creator doesn't respect the material that he created, then why should I? The Hunger Games really made Jedi and the prequels look like the childish fluff they are. I loved The Hunger Games for having the courage to not pull its punches, where George Lucas and crew began pulling their punches where Star Wars was concerned, all for toy sales--damn the story, damn integrity, damn the fans, damn respect for self or for the material, just show me the money. Goodbye...and Rest In Pieces Star Wars!!!

Lucas only made the prequels to showcase his digital technology, he has no reason to make any more Staw Wars films with their make-it-up-as-you-go stories because he simply DOES NOT CARE! Through out the making of TPM he frequently told the crew that Jar Jar was the most important character, if they don't make him work then the film doesn't work! This sound like a man interested in telling stories or a man focused on pushing the envelope on special Effects? And what happened to Jar Jars importance in the following films? That proves nothing - The internet would just about explode with the dark side lightening if given a 'yes'
by even9
Is that a packet of ciggs in George's pocket? :) A trilogy of CGI anime of the kinda quality as say, the Aldaraan piece for the old republic game, would be the way to go & some of the old crew could do the voice overs. Also because it's in animation, the story could be more of an expliciit full on unrestrained un P.C. 'trip' without people being offended, as an animation trilogy - even though totally photorealistic - is a break from the previous live action Star Wars, so as a stylistic thing it would be less touchy to the vocal die hard Anakin classic trilogy mindset. I don't think a live action movie trilogy is a possibility, they would be literally be underseige for the 6-10 year period it would take, & that probably starts to grate when you are at the epi-center after a while... Extended episodes 2 & 3 would be cool though, as there are a few plot things and character develoments that could do with abit of a touch up or embellishment. And also you could re-edit/re-make the entire Geonosis arena battle so there is actually a narrative to the action, which wouldn't hurt.

I like that tone. Nobody seems to do that 70s film school verite like...I dunno...Soderberg? I think if Lucas can tap into his early 70s self, he still may have some interesting stories to tell.

And, frankly, I believe Lucas. He knows all he'll get for additional films is grief, and deservedly so. He was a good, not great, filmmaker in the 70's and has sucked ever since. He is a Hollywood master as a producer, but get him behind the camera and every bad impulse shows up on screen. I appreciate Star Wars, and even more than that Empire, but I dearly wish he'd never made the prequels.

Well If He's Going To Do It Even Those Original Actors Aren't Getting Any Younger Either
by Real Deal
I think the sequel trilogy would be an easier sell with a decent script. The thing is you don't already know what happens like the prequel so with a decent script it might be a fun thing to watch. Like I've said before I believe the prequel had a built in handicap. That was a big difference between it and the original trilogy. Just like the saturday morning serials it was patterned after the thing that keeps you going is you want to know what happens to the characters. With 1,2, and 3 you already know the outcome ( just not how they got there ) and with the first trilogy there's no resolution with a negative but tacidly hopeful ending. The other problem was it wasn't fun like the original trilogy. Much darker with it's decent into the empire. I've never bought the spoiled Jedi character Hayden Christensen tried to bring to life. It kind of made Darth Vader pathetic. But a sequel with some of the old characters and some new ones ( made in a less dark way ) might just work. The Empire Strikes Back had a bit of this same problem ( although many say it was the best of the original trilogy ). It ended on a negative cliff hanger but had the benifit of resolution with RTOTJ. Oh well it sounds like they may never do it but as it's been pointed out before in Hollywood never say never.

Lucas can't direct for shit, he's made two good movies; American Graffitti & Stars Wars. The best Star Wars movie was the one he didn't touch and he hates it. Of course there will be more Star Wars movies - you dont leave a multi billion dollar franchise grow old gracefully, you fuck it until it dies - and of course rhey will be shit. I left Star Wars alone after ROTJ, never seen the prequels and never want to. Darth Vader as a petulant emo teen, no thanks. Star Wars need to be released from Lucas if it's ever going to have any glory. Star Trek soldiers on with different directors and has been energised for a newer audience, Star Wars needs to do the same.

Yes...we made him filthy rich. And we got what we bought from him whether it was the dvds, the posters or whatever trinkets he sold you. TRANSACTION OVER! You get it? Done! He can do whatever the fuck he wants with his - I repeat - HIS property! For the record: I loved Star Wars, thought The Empire Strikes Back was better, but I don't love it like Star Wars, and thought Return of the Jedi was a step down in greatness from the two that came before, but hey...that's the way it goes. I did not like the prequels at all. I have Star Wars original version on DVD and I'm happy with that. Thanks George! Great movies!

I recently watched the new Star Wars porn parody. It was actually funny as hell at times. Tom Byron's Obi-Wan Kenobi was comedic gold ( *You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. While he's riddling his prostrate corpse with numerous blaster bolts, he turns to the bartender and says: *Shoot first, and shoot often!*

Why has no one made Sci-Fi movie that eclipses Star Wars?
by The Outlander
Star Wars was awesome in 1977, but why have we not seen other Star Wars like movie since then? With all the money that George Lucas has made from Star Wars, you would think that other studios would have had a go at producing a space opera like Star Wars. This is very puzzling to me.

-
The Clone Wars are nothing like they were in the EU written before the prequels.
-
In his mind, Star Wars is whatever he craps out, and we're supposed to lap it up in awe. He WOULD think its punishment to take his ball and go home. I hope he stays true to his word and never makes another SW film in the New Hope timeline. Some of his revisionist thoughts on the Star Wars EU would be laughable if he werent serious. Mandalorians as a pacifist people was my favorite... its like he does this shit just to stick his thumb in the fans collective eye. Im looking forward to when control of the story passes to the family. Then Id watch eps 7,8,9. Star Wars might become a Bond-like franchise. Lucas doesnt understand or respect the relationship that fans have with "his story." The only anology I can come up with is if Abner Doubleday decided to change the rules of baseball in his old age to suit his temper and advancing age, telling everyone to fuck off cuz its his game! ...ok, i just remembered Abner Doubleday didnt invent baseball... damn you Lucas!

Really? that's the only criticism? How about the fact that Ford very clearly didn't want to be there? Or the existence of Ewoks when we COULD have had Wookies? Or that cool looking bounty hunter who managed to take down Han Solo getting accidentally bumped into and sent to his death? Or how about how Princess Leia is basically just along for the ride? Now, I like the movie, especially in comparison to the prequels, but there's plenty to critique in that movie.

Not very many original ideas have been made in outerspace. How about instead of rebooting Star Wars or making episodes 7, 8 and 9, do something original. One possible reason Lucas is not making VII, VIII & IX...
by WeylandYutani
is because of douches like that guy. I am sure Lucas loves what SW has brought him (more wealth than you can imagine). That and the Indy sequels are all that people are are willing to ask him about... repeatedly. I don't blame him for saying "fuck it, I'm done." I am sure he will produce other works for filmmakers he finds to be interesting, perhaps without taking credit like some projects he did in the 80s. He may even change his mind at some point and pass off the franchise to others. But I am sure that while he feels incredibly lucky to have the fortune he does and his place in American movie history, my guess is that all he wanted to do that day was to have lunch with his daughter.

Someone comes up with their own intergalactic tales. And neither does Ridley Scott. Damn, these baby boomers won't go away or retire. Indiana Jones 5 is a disaster waiting to happen (and I'm the biggest fan of the original trilogy)
-
Heir to the Empire (1991) Dark Force Rising (1992) The Last Command (1993) If Lucas never makes anything to override Zahn's novels, whose success is largely responsible for reviving the virtually dead post-Ewok Star Wars market, this story is what happened to Luke, Leia, and Han. And history has shown that Lucas may or may not have been able to write anything better.
-
If a fucking liar. Because if you did, you wouldn't be here giving a fuck. You wouldn't follow every little news article about your childhood father figure. Lucas didn't ruin Star Wars for you. You just don't like the new shit that wasn't produced during your childhood (What a shock!) You clearly still love the original trilogy. But luckily that doesn't mean you have to like the rest (A common misconception it seems) It's always all or nothing with the fans. Do you enjoy every single episode of your favorite TV series? The mouth breathers who claim to be over Star Wars are the worst of the bunch. They clearly want the benefits of being a fan, but they don't want to put themselves down to that level. So what do they do? Put themselves on a pedestal where they can spout their opinion. But they're not like the rest, they're "done with Star Wars". So in other words, you're simply embarrassed to be a fan. What a fucking joke of a fanbase...

He's been saying this for years. He's been denying that he ever had a nine part trilogy since at least TPM.. but he's on record from around the time of the original trilogy of saying it was a nine chapter saga. So yes, his story changes. But I think he's mostly done with SW movies proper for a number of reasons. 1. When it came up about episodes 7-9 during prequel production, he said he never had plans for those, but he also said that after the amount of time and energy the prequel trilogy took, he couldn't imagine putting himself through that kind of commitment again. I don't think he himself would, and I'm not sure I see him passing his baby off to someone else with him only as a 'godfather'. 2. The expanded universe is the best indication. He's allowed people to play with his characters. I don't think he would have allowed that if he had plans for them. I think this is the best indication. 3. After the fans picked apart and blasted Lucas over the prequels, I'm quite sure he doesn't want to go back to the universe after he was picked apart. He doesn't need the money. The caveat is, i could see him writing them and passing off to other directors, but after recent public comments, I don't think he's going to go that route. Just my gut though, I think he's done with the saga itself. He could surprise us all and open it back up.
-
PREACH IT, brutha!

EPISODE 1: Was to focus on the origins of the Jedi Knights and how they are initiated and trained EPISODE 2: Introduction and development of Obi-Wan Kenobi EPISODE 3: Introduction and life of Vader EPISODE 4: There were seven different drafts of the film. At one point, they pursued buying the rights to Hidden Fortress because of the strong similarities. At one point, Luke was a female, Han was Luke's brother, Luke's father was the one in prison (interesting point for some debates) and the film featured 40 wookies EPISODE 5: Once written, the screenplay of Empire is almost exactly what is seen on screen. The only cut scenes were those involving wampas in the rebel base (cut because of time and unsolved technical glitches) and about two minutes of Luke/Yoda Jedi training with no real dialog. EPISODE 6: Leia was to be elected Queen of her people leaving her isolated. Han was to die. Luke confronted Vader and went on with his life alone. Leia was not to be Luke's sister. EPISODE 7: Third trilogy was to focus on Luke's life as a Jedi, with very few details planned out. EPISODE 8: Luke's sister (not Leia) appears from another part of the galaxy. EPISODE 9: First appearance of the Emperor.
-
SW: Rebellion. Focus on Mon Mothma, Bail Organa, Ackbar and the others involved in lighting those fires. Vader, Emperor are in the back ground. Rare appearances. Bounty Hunter stories, gangster stories....

johndalf, nah, Krell got shot in the back in Clone Wars, which is why it was a very well done episode
by Al
Point of it was that even in war Jedi Knights who aren't straight up Sith bad guys can go off their rocker (he was babbling about joining Dooku and the Sith at the end before one of the clones popped), which I thought was a nicely grey area for Star Wars to go into considering how mostly black and white it was. And, yeah, it really wasn't a "kids show" have fun time episode at all. Yes, they all die. That's how everybody's story ends. We all fucking die. But the cool thing about Clone Wars and spin-offs are that you can do these different types of stories (Clone Wars bounces freely within different genres from episode to episode. If Star Wars is taking different genres and mashing them together into a single film, then Clone Wars lets each genre breathe. Christ, I'm watching an episode now that, for half of it, it's a freakin Prison movie. That's just really unique)

the fact that Maul came back was impossible to avoid but I don't know the deets yet. I'm assuming Sith magickery. But not on that ep yet. so I'm probably gonna bounce from this TB just to keep spoiler free. Anyway, the point is. Yes, we will not get a sequel trilogy. Yes, there will always be more Star Wars, which allows the series to spin off into different directions, just not live-action cinematic outings. But there are always different mediums and ways you can go, since it's multi-adaptive.

George Lucas is upset at the critical reception the prequels recieved
by DARTH VOODOO
From what I've read George Lucas was very upset about the negative reaction the prequels recieved when they came out. Believe it or not his feelings were hurt. Sounds silly, but it's the truth. He has been quoted in the last year as saying "why even make the movies if nobody likes them?" I hate to beat a dead horse, but Lucas gave us really Star Wars films that were inferior to his classic trilogy. In the end the prequels (which were the most anticipated movies of all time) kind of sucked...That said the personal attacks on Lucas (George Lucas raped my childhood) were over the top. I could see where he woould want to walk away. The George Lucas that existed in 1999 was very different from the George Lucas that existed in 1977. Along the way he also lost touch with his audience and it's expectations of what the Prequels would/should be... We all wanted epic/mature Sci-Fi films about the fall of Anakin Skywalker and the rise of Darth Vader. Instead he gave us films about little boys "cool wizard" and another film with an Anakin Skywalker that looked and acted like he belonged in a boy band...Where was the Dark Lord of the Sith we waited all our lives for? To this day I don't think he undestands why we didn't eat up Jar Jar Binks stepping in poop, OR C3PO's head being replaced on the battlefield Mr Lucas just doesn't get it and the people around him are simply ass kissing yes men who tell him everything he does is wonderfull.

Someone should do a jokey riff on this where Lucas is the Emperor and the body guard is Vader or some kinda other Imperial bodyguard/thug.
by NeonFrisbee
Spacepapparazzi: "Will you ever slacken your grip on the galaxy?" Emperor: "NEVER!" Vader: "NOOOOOOOOOOOOO more pictures!" (Then they scurry off inna spacecar to some other place of interest. Or, as in the case of the prequels, a place of complete and utter disinterest.)
-
Like Star Wars didn't rip-off its source material? Everyone does. Want to make a Western, well somebody has already done it. You want to do a comedy, well, someone has done that too. As well, they have done action and adventure, fantasy, and space opera, but what Hungar di right that Return of The Jedi and the prequels failed to do, is place the tone of the story ahead of product tie-ins. No, they weren't trying to please toy companies and Burger King, Nabisco, Kellog's, or General Foods, they just made the best movue they could. Shaky-camera, here and there, I could have done without it, but some people can do without steady-cam, or motion-control, slow-motion, fast motion, lens flare, CGI, practical effects, green-screen, etc. These are production, cinematography and editing techniques...in a entire mixed bag, so it is all about balance. The majority of the Star Wars films sucked, because the story tone was off, even the character interactions and motivations.

How much does a show like GAME OF THRONES cost? Or TRUE BLOOD? I cant believe that a network like HBO or SHOWTIME or hell, even one of the lesser cable-networks like SPIKE or SYFY wont pony up the $$$ for the live-action show to go into production. Even with all the prequel bashing,a STAR WARS show is a license to print money. It could be about the live-action adventures of Jar-Jar Binks love life and it would still make a fortune...why doesnt someone get this ball rolling before its too late?

How about a series of one off movies, each by a different director and set during any place or time in the SW galaxy.
by la te ral us
With high profile directors who've been influenced by Lucas, ala spielberg, fincher, Cameron, cronenberg, get David lynch out of retirement (he considered directing Jedi after all). And after clone wars is done, I hope hope hope they do an animated OT show!
-
The hate didn't come on until well after phantom menace was released, and even then it's been primarily only the hipsters and whiney Internet geeks that have trumpeted the whole "George Lucas raped my childhood blah blah blah...", all three of them, and especially ROTS, we're pretty well received by critics. I imagine he's only saying this now cause he's probably stayed away from sites like this for the most part. And if you did stay off the net, you'd have no idea what the cynical minority thought of them. They ALL had fresh ratings at RT until phantom menace just barely dipped below 60 after the rerelease (shocker!). ROTS actually has a HIGHER tomato rating than ROTJ, and rightfully so, I can't fault Lucas for sith, he finally found his stride and knocked it out of the park. But I distinctly remember when menace came out and I was clipping out reviews like crazy, and the majority was certainly favorable. People forget that now. It became fashionable to lump the prequels into one entity and repeatedly bash the shit out of it, now that mentality just seems sad.
-
when the showrunners of game of thrones are done, they make new star wars movies with new characters, (i say before the prequels by a cuple hundred years so yoda is still in it, but hed be the only returning character). they certainly know how to do epic.
-
After those terrible prequels, I mean who cares? After those and the latest Indiana Jones movie I haven't been able to bring myself to watch anything with the name George Lucas attached to it. Now that I think about it, with the exception of "Munich" I could say the same thing about Spielberg.

Of course, the one thing that could be good because the original characters are still alive, and he could hand it off to someone else to direct.
by travismays
Why would he make that?
-
Too bad, instead we got 3 shitty prequals from a man who refuses any outside creative advice. Its obvious now that Gary Kurtz was just as responsibe for Star Wars and Empire being the masterpieces they are. I respect his initial vision and the fact that he changed cinema. The problem is he stopped being a visionary long ago. James Cameron has more then taken his place at the head of the table.
-
When the Money dries up Lucas will do another one. If he does I would like to see one set 1000 or more years before Yoda was born.
-
A billion dollar brand does not get dropped. New media versions are crucial for continued toy revenue. It was 22 years between Epi4 and Epi1. By 2021, we'll have another Star Wars film franchise from his daughter (currently one of the main writers on CLONE WARS).
-
First, I like Star Wars. I like the universe he created. I like far more about it than I will ever be able to dislike. People are too tense about all this shit now. The prequels are old, already. Let the drama go and just enjoy the vastness of what this man unleashed upon the world. <p> Second, I think he could probably make a better batch of films that Ep I-III. I don't think he'll ever do anything to equal Ep IV-VI, but I don't think he needs to, either. It's too bad there's so much baggage attached to the prequels, because that will probably keep him to his word. Which I honestly think is our loss.
-
Love LEGO Star Wars.
-
If only to re-invigorate the star wars franchise again and make it worthy of its once phenomenal popularity rather than becoming star trek which is a mixed bag of brilliance and garbage. Will it happen? I don't think even Lucas knows. We all know he's full of shit by now... Fuck but then I think he'll cast justin bieber as hans son or some shit like that... -
...to Jackson's removal of Tom Bombadil from LOTR. Bottom line is that no matter how loyal and rabidly protective (critical?) the die-hard fan base is, the majority of the movie-going fans are just that. Movie-going. They'll never read the books or buy in to the canon. I'd call myself a Star Wars geek if someone asked, but the only times I've ever strayed from the flicks, or the occasional tv show, are the odd, random book or three I've picked up from friends, and the Salvatore-penned book in which Chewie dies. And I forget most of that. Hard to sell mythos to people who, in the end, really couldn't care less.

-
The story of Star Wars is over. Everything outside of the movies (the good and the bad) is first generation fan fiction at best.
-
Because I'm a HUGE (and I mean ginormous) Tolkien fan and even I have to admit that most of the people in the real world who I discussed the LOTR trilogy with had no idea who Tom Bombadil was, had forgotten about him while watching the films, or simply didn't care. <p> I often forget that because I'M a geek it doesn't necessarily mean the unwashed masses feel the same way. You're probably right. Most people wouldn't care if he did a third trilogy that completely ignored everything previously released covering the time period post RotJ. It would be disappointing for those of us who have followed along through all that material. But I guess it wouldn't stop me from wanting to see it, either. <p> I'd certainly rather see that than ANY re-release of Ep I-VI... again.
-
...I mean, he was the friggin' embodiment of Middle Earth! But it made sense to leave him out. He was in the books for what? 2 chapters? It just would have confused and then angered said unwashed masses. (love that, btw) As for Episodes 7-9...I didn't necessarily mean that they'd have to stray from the canon. It's canon for a reason. But he could do, say the 3 Zahn novels that nem_wan mentioned earlier, and the bulk of ticket-buyers would walk out of the theatre thinking that Lucas had just redeemed himself. The rest of us would just be happy he didn't fuck up his own creation even further

Well since you must catagorize everything THE CLONE WARS is considered "All Ages". I've been surprised a few times with the level of intense combat/violence that has been portrayed in the series. Also, there were Zombie Geonosians for chrissakes! It's weird you consider the level of gore such an important factor for a SW product. THE CLONE WARS markets to kids heavily, just like all the movies have way before it. You just sound like an idiot with the whole "kids cartoon" thing. I also watch YOUNG JUSTICE. Oh oh, Superheroes! Lets hear you complain about that now. And just for the record, I've seen only about half of this seasons TCW episodes. So I still put half the energy into enjoying SW as you put into hating it.
-
I have the original cuts and special editions on DVD (both bootlegged and official) and the Bluray discs. And I remember seeing them in the theater. My childhood hasn't been raped.
-
NO MORE STAR WARS! Its eternally ruined. Just leave it.
-
Star Wars isn't and has never been Science Fiction. It's a Space Fantasy film series in the tradition of Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon for 12 year old boys. Adults expecting mature Sci-Fi from Lucas are going to have to be content with THX-1138, because that's about as close as you're going to get from him. Star Wars was never meant to be anything more than a throw-back to the kinds of films Lucas grew up with as a young boy. I don't know why so many of you have a hard time understanding this. It sticks out like dogs balls!
-
Lucas clearly said when he announced his retirement that it wouldn't include Indiana Jones 5, which he is working away on. Can't wait to see the next phase of Lucas's career, THX 1138 and American Graffiti were sensational films.
-
Anyone ever expected the prequels to even remotely compare to the original trilogy is still beyond me. Even if there was no Jar Jar, or field-frolicking, or shitty acting, it would have been, and still is, impossible. Episodes IV through VI are untouchable.
-
Just set in space Lucas even admits it on the HF DVD. Yeah it was good fun film ( albiet with a few slow/pointless scenes) in it but people shouldnt pretend it was something it wasnt. Anyone dont believe me go and watch the Hidden Fortress and watch Lucas little introduction! You could tell by RTJ Lucas was running out of ideas what with another Death Star and Leia suddenly becoming Lukes sister etc. Only the Luke/Vader/Emperor scenes stop that film being a total cluster. Hell ESB was the best of the bunch and the one Lucas had the least input should say it all. As for all this make Independent movies shit. He has been saying that bollocks for years (since 83) and Im betting instead its gonna be another OT DVD set released with a couple more pointless additions to try and even squeeze more money out of that cash cow.
-
Cue the opposition. His skills lay in creating that Star Wars universe. No one can legitimately argue aginsed that. He's clearly burned out, mostly by posters on this web site, slating the prequels. OK, they may have disappointed many, but give him a break, he's still created some amazing work. Personally, I can't blame hin for stepping away from writing and directing Star Wars, who would invite the vitriol? But he could still produce and have a hand in the creation of more installments. Written and directed by others, but still a Lucas inspired work. Theres far more mileage in the characters. he's given clearance for clone wars animation and SW graphic novels/ computer games, all hugely successful, Go on george, make the movies happen. Handing the reins over to others, choosing carefully who gets involved will bring cudos back to the mighty creator.

The best place, as everyone knows, to get a well considered and honest response from any one on any subject is leaping on them, tripping over the kerb in the fucking street. I cant count how many interviews i've read with Georgie saying "i've left very specific (legally binding no doubt) instructions saying NO MORE STAR WARS MOVIES" after he moves into the wooden bungalow . The only chance is some murky twat, pouring over the estate afterwards, getting around that with some sort of legal wank. Who the fuck wants to watch 'Star Wars' that doesn't have Darth Vader and Stormtroopers in it anyway? You want more 'Star Wars'? Renumber the OT to Eps 7-9 and make a new trilogy of 4-6 that takes place between 'Sith' and the original 'Star Wars', with Darth fucking Vader and Stormtroopers. 'Star Wars' is bullshit without Rebel Alliance vs Galactic Empire.
-
Whoop-de-fucking-do.
-
Lucas has always stated there would be 9 chapters. He's just tired of people asking him so he's having a tantrum. Honestly, i'm with the general census that someone else should direct these films. What kills me is that Dave Filoni doesn't get enough credit for directing "The Clone Wars' that he should. Many times I see GL's name on the ending credits. one can clearly tell which episodes he directs and those are typically ones with Jar Jar or just the droids. Othewrise, I firmly beleive any episodes with TRUE SUBSTANCE are done by Filoni and Co. Star Wars was phenomenal in the '70's. But lost it's luster on us in the '90's with EP I, and II. III was real good imo and more gritty. But we need a more 'intelligent' Star Wars. I mean, look at Mass Effect, it's lacking Lightsaber's and Jedi's, sure, but there's this awesome human connection between the different races of aliens and stories that one can relate too. Sort of like the new BSG. Anyhoo. It would be awesome to see Star Wars Re-envisioned. it's high time and if they have to do it in EP. VII, VIII and IX then so be it! my .02 -Rex
-
Take some time off, vent, get it out of your system, maybe make some smaller movies if you're ever going to, then come back to SW and let someone else do the heavy lifting.

George Lucas can't take a piss anymore without some sort of criticism or being blatantly called a child(hood) rapist. If I was I'm, i'd hold a press confference, tell all the Star Wars fans, in no uncertain terms, "Fuck You. This is my story, and I'll tell it the way I like." (Which of course, he's been doing for 35 years, but...) Then I'd leave someone competant in charge of the rest of the businesses and head to Tahiti to live out my life surrounded by naked native girls (in Twi'ilek makeup.)

it wouldnt bother me in the least to see an episode 7 8 9. I would pay to see that in fact. Actually I dont see G. I hate to say it, but I think this is the George Lucas fandom created.
by gotilk
Successful, but a little bitter, jaded and in a way... vengeful. I think these little things he does now, these statements that he knows will rile up fans, are very much on purpose with the intention of pissing off a certain kind of fan. One who still holds him in high regard for what he's done in the past but hates him for the changes he's made to his own work and the focus on making films/tv specifically (and exclusively) for children. Combine that with the bubble these successful men live in, and you end up with disaster for the work itself. I'm not blaming fans for his various bad choices over the years, but I think at this point he's slightly vindictive and maybe even subconsciously makes certain decisions in order to *stick it to* certain types. And after the success of the prequels in spite of these decisions, he's.... EMPOWERED. I'm no better or worse than any of them. The choices he's made since Empire have puzzled me. Ewoks on. And Ive been brutal here and there, peppered with respect and gratitude for what came before. I don't think there's any way to change it at this point. Even if this live action venture for TV turns out to be fantastic, adult, and serious with respect and reverence for the past. I do not think we will ever see sequels in the cinema. Maybe when we've all hit our 70s and the franchise is in corporate/private hands and he's passed. But before that, no dice. It's sad, really. Because to me it seems rather childish. There's so much potential there. I think Mr Lucas woke up one day and the Internet hit him like a ton of critical bricks. I don't think he was prepared for it, and I think it hurt him deeply. I think he was prepared for the professional critics and had armored up for them well in advance. But I don't think he was prepared for the uncensored, go-for-broke criticism of fandom. This is all the result of that ton of bricks. And I do NOT think we will ever see what we want to see. Sad, really. Finally, in truth we'll never really know for sure. That's just how I see it.
-
we'll see episodes VII, VIII and IX alright but first they'll remake episodes I-VI; The bright side of that is the remakes of episodes I-III may actually be watchable! Lucas' "new" Star Wars universe, containing cartoon, stereotypical and flamboyant (and annoying) characters does not work for a live action scenario anymore than the cartoon versions of Droids and Ewoks would have! I like Clone Wars but it works only as a separate entity from the movie universe. Hopefully he stays truer to his word on this than he did about releasing the original prints of episodes IV-VI...if he doesn't then you can expect more shitty-lackluster Star Wars product from him!
-
So done w/Star Wars.
-
and he won't commit to anything Star Wars unless he can bring something new to the table. John Carter was a hard lesson, even for the greats of Hollywood. Ep 2 is a bit boring in the middle but for the most part good stuff! Fuk all you hatfull fanboys! You all crushed this dude and now he is saying fuk it for now...
-
Spot - on. He really is a technologist. If he were to focus he energies/funds/manhours/resources on things like workflow, pipeline, infrastructure innovation and let go of the reigns on creative aspects of production (on top of letting go when is comes to his vindictiveness) we could be looking at a bright future for small filmmakers and large alike. And I think he knows that what makes a large company strong and enduring these days is a strong patent portfolio, not big blockbusters under their belts. I mean look at struggling companies like Yahoo. They may be struggling , but they have a patent portfolio the size of Texas. And when he leaves this mortal coil, I think he would like to leave behind a legacy that can continue to be large and strong using said patents and innovations to grow even after his passing. The franchise itself and the licensing/merchandising that come with it will not last forever. The patents and the continuing research that they fund... could. And what you say about true, full immersion is dead-on right I think. The real challenge will be the way to hold on to and develop STORY within the framework of immersion. People like to be guided, to essentially have their environment be on *rails* (like some gaming) and hand over control over such things to the storyteller. But the urge to explore a truly immersive environment is overwhelming. That doesn't work in the cinema. And if it did, I have absolutely no clue how they would do it. People have tried interaction in the cinema and it's always, ALWAYS failed. The really tough part about visual innovation is how to market and promote it. There's really no way to effectively convey the differences between say.... a converted 2d to 3d film vs, a native, shot on 3d, 48fps motion picture. I've tried. They have to SEE it, And there is a decent (and vocal, critical) portion of the audience that has trouble with depth perception for various reasons. They do and will try to ruin it for the rest of us. And they will do so sometimes with words like *fad* and *novelty*. It's not going away, it's not a fad. It's the way we see naturally. End of. Thanks for letting me rant about this, Zinc. Yes, I think if George has a chance to try a new way to make films more cheaply using new technology in an innovative way, we WILL get more films. But I think there's also a good chance that he will NOT make any more *blockbuster* tentpole productions within the Hollywood system. John Carter proved that a film looking *huge* and *spectacular* isn't enough to put people in seats. Yeah, it's not really big, new news. We already knew that. But I think John Carter showed how that works NOW and how the industry has changed and MUST change.
-
...on the maturity of TCW. I saw the pilot, then never caught an episode until the 3-part slaver episode. I was surprised at the G-rating! slavery, suicide, mass murder only to prove a point...heavy stuff even for an adult audience. Just 'cause it's animated, doesn't automatically make it a 'kid's show'. South Park, anyone? Hell, even The Flinstones was a prime-time adult sitcom. Pretty sure it was the first show to have a married couple sleep in the same bed.

Mediocre Messiah. Hunger Games??? If you're a guy, hang up your balls in shame.
by Hint_of_Smegma
Strike yourself from the lists of men. Fuck, just go to the docs and have it cut off to become the gelding you evidently yearn to be. If you're a woman, you're the womanist woman that ever graced womanhood that's for sure. Look, I hate the prequels. Loathe them. I also hate Lucas's attitude about the fans and the direction he took Star Wars but I'll get into that shortly. But despite all that, if you honestly think that over hyped tub of shaky cam, empty derivative shit that was Hunger Games is better than Star Wars, or Empire, or Jedi, you're outta your tree insane pal. As to the rest of you calling for Lucas to die or how much you hate him, get a life. He fucked up the prequels, we hated them, now he hates us because of the panning he took. Big deal. Do you honestly, honestly want the Lucas - that now hates you as well as the Lucas who evidently lost his creative spark - making three more shitty Star Wars films? Think about it. I certainly don't want them. As far as I'm concerned Star Wars ended in 1983, after Jedi finished its run and the only thing I'm waiting on is the inevitable hi def remastered original prints. Which he will release when he's finished squeezing every cent out of the rest of you for the shitty tampered editions and the gay Clone Wars is over and such. End of rant.
-
...the original prints didn't exist any more. Could be mistaken, but I remember hearing something to that effect when the special editions came out.

I have always imagined her fudge to be something more like dark chocolate rather than milk. Wait, what was the subject?

LOL thats the funniest thing i read on here just about. You can read the detailed story lines for 7, 8, and 9 at SW dot com. Its sounds really cool too! If you read it you can just picture everything in your head. They clone darth and luke bad guys. They ride flying creatures in floating cities. I for one would love to see them!! Never had an idea other than the first one!!?? Thats the whole fuking story you HammerHead!! All 6 parts!! Yeah he is a real idiot for making some of the best sci fi put to screen, yeah!! Fuking retards!!! I love to hate haters hehehe...
-
There is a youtube vid of a guy that did a re edit. It was a link off of sci fi dot com a week or so ago. It was surprisingly very well done!
-
Preach it, brutha! And seriously, cool it on wishing the man dead! That should be grounds for banning, but I guess when Harry is called worse things...maybe not.

Let’s quit pretending the prequels are universally reviled. They’re not.
by TheLastCleric
The vocal minority likes to imagine that these films are universally despised when in fact all three movies enjoy a higher aggregate review score than most films released. (Certainly better than recent fare like John Carter or Tron Legacy) Personally I loved the prequels despite their flaws but then again I’m objective enough to also understand the original films weren’t perfect either. (And that includes TESB)

George Lucas not wanting to fuck around with star wars and make more money? Well, something doesnt add up.
by wcolbert
Grain of salt, indeed. That was more of a polite "fuck off" to the annoying reporter than any kind of statement. Come on. We all know Lucas can't stay away from Star Wars. He can't even stop adding shit to the ones he already made. I am quite sure we will one day see a new star wars based film. It may be after Lucas dies, or it may be sooner, but that much potential money in the bank is not going to be ignored by execs.
-
Dude you don't get it at all man! CW is serious shit going on. Not really for small kids who would not understand the story. Lots of violence in CW. Anakin was seduced by the dark side, it wasn't his fault...He was a great jedi and a good friend!!
-
Why??? If the haters can have their opinion, why cant the likers????? Bash the Bashers!!!
-
and his movies are just as creative. fuck you lucas.
-
The story has been and is continued in other media, and is by and large better than the prequels. So why would there be any demand for even *more * movies?

I would welcome a Further Adventures of Han & Chewie movie
by Joe Plumber
But, I'm totally done with Jedis, the Force and Darth Vader.
-
Ghost let me help you here my friend! Really? that's the only criticism? YES! How about the fact that Ford very clearly didn't want to be there? BULLSHIT! I watched that movie a hundred fukin times and never thought that. He was pretty much as dry as he was in the other 2 films to me! Or the existence of Ewoks when we COULD have had Wookies? The money and time wasnt there genius, they had to go with the Ewoks!! Or that cool looking bounty hunter who managed to take down Han Solo getting accidentally bumped into and sent to his death? How exactly did he take him down??? Darth caught him because floating city guy turned him in duh??!! I will admit how he died was kind of lame, i will give you that one ok :-) Or how about how Princess Leia is basically just along for the ride? Really??!! I find everything she did very relevant on the forest moon, touching the way Luke told her she was his brother as well. Now, I like the movie, especially in comparison to the prequels, but there's plenty to critique in that movie. You have a right to your own opinion!! Take care!
-
HAHAHA, jediwuddayaknow is an IDIOT !!! jediwuddayaknow please continue! I am lol over here at my desk at your comments!!
-
So, if Lucas wants it to be so, he can stipulate no new Star Wars until 95 years after his death. And he wants it to be so.
-
just stories about fictional galaxies and space battles and mystical powers is all a film maker needs to have endless creative possibilities. When I win the lottery tonight, I will begin making such a movie.
-
This is why we desperately need new governments which can make drastically needed changes to these insane copyright laws. Have a creator earn a decent living for a while off a creation? Sure. But generations after his death? Lunacy!

You and me will be forever hated trying to hammer this point home. As I said, movies that are alledgedly so violently hated DO NOT continue to make money. TPM did over $100 million on its re-release. Where's the hate? It's inside the small band who didn't exactly what they want. They hate Lucas for that and they hate him for adding 8 minutes of tweaks to THREE films. Out of 650 minutes, they hate 8, barely 1%... that's more than retarded. He can't ever win with these freaks. If he's not kissing their ass, he just needs to die. Huh? It's this all or nothing crap that permiates these boards that is so pathetic. I;ve always wondered how people with attitudes like this get by in their normal lives? If they have one that is...

I'd like to see something new to sit alongside Star Wars and Star Trek. And not another remake either. Battlestar Galactica is great, but in the end, the latest TV series and the upcoming Bryan Singer BSG movie are both reboots. I suppose we have Avatar, but then only a majorly successful filmmaker like a Cameron or Spielberg can get that kind of a mega budget sci-fi film green lit these days. Prometheus is exciting, but technically not new as it is a prequel to the Alien series. The only ones I can think of are Blomkamp's Elysium next year. Then there is that Wachowski flick that is seemingly going forward, Jupiter Ascending. I suppose that could be an epic sci-fi or space opera. Could be a superhero or fantasy epic too for all I know? I'd really like to see some new epic space operas or sci-fi sagas though. Doesn't have to be space opera necessarily either. The Matrix trilogy was able to stand apart from Star Wars/Trek by being a cyberpunk epic instead of one set in space on other worlds. Maybe someone will bring us an epic science fiction trilogy that deals with a setting or concept that hasn't been explored as much as that of the space opera. I've got a few ideas, but then I am a nobody. Hollywood wouldn't even read my script, let alone throw a couple hundred million at it. The still going strong remake madness that we see stories and announcements on here daily should be enough to tell you all that it is going to be a long time before original ideas are valuable again in the American film industry.

Or his kids will.

Camryn Manheim bent her Ghost Whisperer co-star over the antique table of their studio set. It was late and the crew and other cast members were long gone. For several days now she had been keeping a terrible secret. One which had driven her to these drastic measures. Camryn began hearing the voices coming from under Jennifer Love Hewitt's dress earlier in the week during a particularly emotionally intense scene they were shooting. At first it was a soft murmur, a whisper, almost inaudible. But before long it grew in volume and it became clear to the rotund actress that her friend whom she referred to as Love was speaking in tongues out of her taut anus. Only, no one else, but her seemed to hear it. Well, having worked on a paranormal tv series for many years, Camryn decided on a course of action to expunge her friend of the evil spirits which possessed her colon. She was going to exorcise Jennifer Love Hewitt's anus. Why she decided that fisting Love with a holy water doused crucifix was the best way to do it is anyone's guess.

Actually, he didn't have the whole thing planned out in '76
by Darth Macchio
Ok..at this point, I get defending the guy as much as I get ragging on him. Others have pointed out how successful his films are so the truth is he has no real need to get angry and pissy in print or on camera (especially considering he's rumored to be worth almost 9 figures at this point). He should continue to thank the fans that love his stuff..new or old...and then say what all artists should say if someone doesn't like your work "I wish you did like it but you can't please everyone...maybe you'll like what I'm working on now..." etc etc (and then just not worry about the haters at all - dismiss them outright, etc.) But to believe Lucas's line about having an entire storyline in his head for 9 films prior to making Star Wars in '76 is just bullshit.
-
March 30, 2012, 4:28 p.m. CST
Yeah, I think it's pretty clear he didn't have ANYTHING planned out, and Star Wars was mostly a fluke whose wild success is based primarily on the people (like Gary Kurtz, his ex-wife, et al) he fired as soon as he could so he could get down to the import
by NeonFrisbee
Basically, it all comes down to a sociopathic inferiority complex mixed with some weird kind of toxic narcissism. He's utterly incapable of admitting that he has NO ability to write and direct AT ALL. But, he is, undeniably, a really smart business man. TERRIBLE artist, great businessman.
-
Honestly, I watched Phantom menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith and got nothing from them. People slay Menace but Clones is a far worse movie. I can't stand all that crap with the monsters in the arena near the end. That isn't Star Wars. That's a George Lucas movie being cloned by another film-maker. I can't stand the talking droids in Sith either. They are ROBOTS, they don't make conversation.

I mean, he originally wrote out the three films as one, but there were co-writers and other directors...so what if future installments happened with a few story notes from him perhaps, and someone else taking the reins? I don't need to say anything about the prequels or constant additions to the original trilogy, nothing new to add there, but considering those two things for a moment, do we want Lucas to be heavily involved in a new trilogy?
-
Lucas, you're a one-trick pony, my friend. And a bad one at that.

No one wants sequels. We want new films set in that far away galaxy.
by Charlie
Be done with that story, have films set in the universe that don't have to be connected.
-
Star Wars without Lucas is nothing. A new Star Wars film without Lucas' involvement would be like Jaws 2, Terminator 3 and 4 etc - utterly lacking the voice of the mythology's creator. Why the fuck would anybody want to see a JJ Abrams Star Wars film? Do you want to see a saga built on a love of pure cinema brought down to a TV movie? Fuck's sake, think before you speak people. <p> Anyway, there will NEVER be more Star Wars films. NEVER. The story is told. Lucas has it written into his will that there never be anymore made. Too bad most of you hated the last three movies huh?
