Harry Reviews GET THE GRINGO!

If you’re like me and are a devout lover of Brian Helgeland’s director’s cut of PAYBACK where Mel Gibson plays Donald Westlake’s PORTER…  then you’ve wanted, rather desperately, for Mel Gibson to return to this kind of testosterone fueled hardass filmmaking.   Apparently, so has Mel.

He wrote and financed GET THE GRINGO with his co-writer & Director Adrian Grunberg.   This was the film Mel wanted to do and he put his money where his mouth is – and I absolutely get why it isn’t necessarily a studio film…   Shit happens in this movie, shit that doesn’t happen in their kinds of films.   I won’t say what, because if I did well, I’m not that kind of asshole.

Imagine…  Porter, he’s only ever referred to as the ‘Driver’, so I’ll just call him PORTER because it suits the way I see this tremendously badass film.    You’ve seen shots of Mel driving in a clown disguise like a bat out of hell, making for the border like a possessed driving demon.   I have to say.   It was nice to see Mel driving in arid… possibly outback-ish looking desolation like a mad man.   Really, tremendous.   What has him in this situation, what is going on?   Well, essentially, “Porter” pulled a job on a particularly unsavory bad man and was making off with a few million and a dream of South American retirement.  Not that it’d necessarily ever work out for a man like “Porter”.

After Mel pulls of wickedly ill-fortuned “Dukes of Hazzard” into Mexico…  only to total his car right smack dab into the loving hands of the Mexican Border Patrol.   They are, of course, corrupt opportunistic bastards that have a prisoner with millions, a dead bloody partner in the back seat and no desire at confessing an identity…  so they do what comes natural.   Take the money for themselves and stick our “Porter” into the most amazing cinematic prison that I’ve yet seen.   Now, my 3 favorite prison films are WHITE HEAT, RUNAWAY TRAIN and THE GREAT ESCAPE.   They’re not endangered…  but this is a fucking amazing flick.   It is essentially how I imagine Sam Peckinpah would’ve handled Porter's Mexican Prison Adventure.

The best character in the film is this Prison.   Based on a real Mexican Prison where if you’re sentenced there, your family can live with you in prison.   Prisoners set up businesses within the prison.   There’s a tent fucking day.   There’s a heroin shack.   There’s a criminal prison boss…  and every guard is corrupt.   All you need in this prison to live real good is money.

Porter enters penniless and empty-handed…  and he has a wicked smoking habit.   Not a good thing.   But this bastard has the cast iron balls of Porter and Porter just takes what the fuck he feels is his.

Mel’s nameless character is being squeezed on all sides.   It’s a matter of time till the mob in the U.S. discovers where the Border Guards dumped him, there’s an American sleazebag journalist trying to shake him down, there’s a kid trying to learn how to kill a man from him, there’s a woman – a helluva woman, but most of all it’s rich with character – like an old John Huston flick.  The people that make up this prison have a history and a vibe to them.

When shit goes violent…  it’s hard core.   There’s a reason Mel’s wanting to skip theatrical…   This becomes a very hard film.   The kind of film that we love when he does, but that isn’t necessarily always given the happy story at the box office.   I’m so happy that AICN is going to get to present this film for the theatrical experience in as many cities as we could arrange.   Before it hits the at home format.   Sure, it’ll be great there, but oh man.  The shit that happens in this film is best experienced with an amped up audience taken in communally with a respectful film loving audience.

This is a very hard R.   A little shocked it got that actually.

But this is exactly the kind of Mel Gibson film I love.  Cold, Hard & Brilliantly Badass.

I love characters that know the lay of the land, that can see the angles and the blind spots.   A man that performs exquisitely Buster Keaton-esque timing.  He’s a man that knows the steps through life.  He’s not afraid of the knocks and he isn’t afraid to heal.   But in the end, have no doubt…  this is a man that gets hard shit done.  Justice as he sees it will be done.   Yeah.   Such a satisfying film experience.

Can’t wait to share this one with y’all!

Looks neat enought for me to check it out

    by Ricardo

And I don't usually go with Harry because, let's face it, the fat fuck's a moron. But he didn't keep it personal this time and avoided his usual shenanigans, so, yeah, might be worth it. And of course, here comes the Mel Nazi jokes for the rest of this TB.

    He doesn't look Druish

    by StephenHawkingDiarrhea

As a Jewish man, I could give two shits about what Mel said. Who friggin cares? I am more concerned with how he beats his wife and kids. Regardless, I love his movies and always will. Even Bird on a Wire. I miss the mullet.

    Not a studio film?

    by tim hager

Um, maybe that has something to do with the fact that it stars a racist, misogynist anti-semite? Those tend to scare away the Hollywood studios. Oh, wait, he's just a drunk ... racist, misogynist anti-semite. Completely different.

When you end your "review" plugging that AICN is one of the presenters of the movie ... it sort of ruins your credibility as an objective movie reviewer. Not that you HAVE any credibility as an objective movie reviewer, but you normally do a better job of trying to pretend you do.

    DTV?

    by mr.underwater

Unfortunately, DTV = Shit in most minds. Which is going to seriously limit the chance of success. Plus, the voice-over in the trailer is fucking terrible. Reminds me of 90s Tarantino-wanna-be shit in the worst possible way.

  • March 23, 2012 1:09 PM CST

Plus, if you feel that the theatrical experience is imperative

    by mr.underwater

To the enjoyment of this flick, maybe Mel should consider doing what Turturro did with Romance & Cigarettes, and personally rent out theaters to hold screenings. If Turturro can pull that off, Mel should have no problem, as I'm sure the latter is several tax brackets higher than the former.

So you don't see a conflict of interest in the owner of the site reviewing a movie right before his site hosts multiple screenings of it? At the very least, you should run a disclaimer at the BEGINNING of the review explaining the relationship. Better yet, just run a press release praising the film and not call it a "review." Look, those of who have been coming here for a decade have grown used to Harry's fuzzy ethics and, those truly offended, avoid his posts as much as possible. (And we overlook the Amazon plugs disguised as DVD columns, the free trips, the constant studio influences, etc., etc.) But when his shenanigans slap us in the face, it's a bit too much. At least have your boss pretend he is an independent voice and not a hired-gun plant.

    riddle me this Harry...

    by Robert Evans

Why would i like this film if i loved the director's original cut of PAYBACK? The original DC of Payback is the film that Helgeland shot and filmed and hoped to screen. He was fired, two days after winning an Oscar, by Gibson, because the film was not up to his standards or whatever. The film released in 1999 was supervised and funded by Gibson. Gibson, now meddling in the waters again, is running GET THE GRINGO.. so again--why should i see a film written and produced by the guy who fired the director of the film who's cut you are applauding?

I enjoyed the shit out of the first cut. DTV is worrying but I'm hoping it's more about his name being mud rather than crappyness of the film. Payback: Directors Cut is beautiful...

    by Jay

Couldn't believe it when I saw the film on DVD. I enjoyed the first Parker novel and loved Point Blank, but wasn't a big fan of Payback when I saw it in theaters. But damn was that directors cuts a ride. Loved it. Watching the Doc on the DVD, it was nice to see everyone involved, including Mel, be upfront and honest about re-cutting the guys movie for such and such reasons. BTW, the UK Blu-ray includes both cuts and is region free. Totally the way to go. And Get The Gringo looks awesome. Can't wait for May when it hits VOD.

The difference between me and you is that I have a conscience, and you think it makes you a non-pussy to be honest about how you hate Jews and blacks. I'm not saying Gibson shouldn't work, but I'm saying I won't forget that he's a total asshole. I mean, is it that hard to understand? Go back to jerking off over your memory of the good old days, when real non-pussy men could say what they want about the jews or the gays or the blacks or the broads, and all of us pussies wouldn't get our pussies in a pussy bunch over being complete pussies. Helgeland’s director’s cut of PAYBACK was horrible!

    by The_Genteel_Gentile

Mel obviously realized this as well and took that turd and polished into a diamond with his (Gibson's) version! The Mel Gibson Producer's theatirical cut is an entirely different and vastly superior film than Helgeland’s. It's got a better story arc, better villians, better dialogue, it's funnier, more twisted, more involving and more satisfying! Anyone who is intersted in storytelling and film should sit down and anylize all the ways Gibson saved "Payback" by watching and dissecting both versions back-to-back. The documentary on Helgeland's director's cut dvd is also very much worth watching. P.S. - another fruitful exercise I would highly recommned is examining all three completely disparate versions of Oliver Stone's "Alexander", and revel in how the abominable catastrophe of the theatrical cut is refined by leaps and bound in each subsequent version until arriving at the near masterpiece if "Alexander: Revisited -The Final Cut"! Truth.

I love when Mel is in badass mode. But the goofy humor doesn't do it for me. I don't like when people are being all wink-wink and cutesy. This is a great idea for a movie, but I wish it came from the same hairy asteroid sized testicles that ejaculated the brutality and FUCK YOU attitude of Braveheart, Passion, and Apocalypto. Now THOSE are fucking man movies. And don't give me shit about Passion. I don't even believe in God and that movie is fucking fantastic. No compromises on the part of the filmmaker, pulls no punches, a serious take no prisoners epic. And don't even get me started on Apocalypto. It makes me cum. Somebody get this man behind the camera on a fucking Viking movie, PRONTO.

This film actually sounds... right up my street. Will def give it a rent when it arrives on home release. Regarding PAYBACK, I actually think both versions are pretty good. Neither are bonafide classics like MAD MAX 2 and LETHAL WEAPON 2 (is Mel the only guy that has a double win on the sequels?) but they have a commendable dark streak, great pace and dont simply rehash POINT BLANK. I think if you really twisted my arm I would say I like the newer version with the train station shootout ending a little more.

Then they should cut it from the trailer asap. If it's a bas-ass crime drama, then sell it as such. Because as it stands, it plays as a very stale leftover from 1995. Put it this way, based of Harry's review (at least the parts I can understand) it sounds like something I'd run to go see. Based on the trailer, it looks like something I'd run to avoid.

  • March 23, 2012 4:52 PM CST

@ cobra--kai - more like nine hours actually!

    by The_Genteel_Gentile

I'd recommend watching all three versions in short ordered succession to really appreciate the monumental improvements made. Every version has a completly different narrative structure. Final Cut ultimately still has everything you originally hated but somehow it now works! The scnes with Anthony Hopkins still have horrible blue screen. The costume design still looks silly at times. The director's cut (2nd version) eleminates much of the superfluous homosexuality and has a longer and more explicit sex scene with Rosario Dawson, while the Revisited: Final Cut (3rd and best version) actually contains the briefest and tamest variation on the Roxane/Alexander honeymoon tryst while giving even more time to the damned eunuch lover - if you can believe that! But the battle scenes are longer, more graffic and strategically coherent. The new non-linear narrative strucure gives an entirely different significance and emphasis to virtually every scene. The stakes are now apparent as are the brilliant tactics and boldness that made Alexander great! Still flawed in many respects, but now brilliant and glorious in many more!

Regarding the site revamp, it really isn't that simple. Shoot me an email: montycristo@gmail.com. I can elaborate on the tech front but not publicly, for very specific reasons. The Sherman obit "specialness" was the series of clips included, rather than just a little text piece. Sorry it didn't meet your exceedingly high standards. You're always welcome to submit writing for the site if you think you can do better. There are plenty of people who will never agree with Ain't It Cool hosting advance screenings of various things. Are the radio stations that host advance screenings corrupt as a result? Let's say Ain't It Cool hosts a screening of PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE. Does that mean De Palma is giving us handies in the alley since we're so corrupt? Part of the goal of the site is getting cool stuff in front of people's eyeballs. Harry makes those decisions about which movies he wants to host events for without getting some giant pile of gold coins. I have been canvassing talkbackers selectively and directly in addition to gathering data from talkbacks in posts over the last couple of months.

Web design is not rocket science anymore, nor is it expensive or esoteric. You guys are just lazy and know that you'll get the same number of hits with or without any improvements. As much as I love Lee Marvin, Mel Gibson is a world class master ACTOR!

    by The_Genteel_Gentile

I'd rank Gibson as every bit as versitile and convicted as Daniel Day Lewis and Gary Oldman. He can do anything! Tragedy, slapstick, accents, stoicism, mania, impishness, boarishness, earnestness, sarcasm, insecurity, confidence, charm, whimsy, affability and all out hard-nosed bad assery! Then he just also happends to be one of greatest filmmakers to ever do the damn thing as well! And he's a decent dude too. NOT a bigot or a sexist in the least. Just a frail human being with flaws and breaking points, like anyone else. Mel's simply a victim of a complete railroading by entities with ulterior agendas to decimate anyone with conflicting religious and political convictions and he's only guilty of succumbing to their pressure in self distructive methods. The Russki whore was more than a mere gold digger, she was an agent of meditated chaos and likely poked the hole in the rubbers of both Mel Gibson and Timothy Dalton! -There's irrifutable prove of a conspiracy to smear and defame Gibson that I don't feel like rehashing at the moment, but if anyone disagrees, then I implore them to open their eyes!

Mel Gibson will never be relevant again

    by IAmTommyWiseau

People don't watch his movies now. Look at how his recent releases have performed at the Box Office. He has essentially murdered his own career. On one hand it's a shame because he had strong directorial skills; he was certainly a better director than the likes of Eastwood. But then, on the other, he's a racist, woman-beating asshole.

I think it's sick how many times I've had to defend liking Mel Gibson movies. I've had Jewish people yell at me for it (it didn't go well). The nutcases on here make me nauseous. Mel Gibson will never be relevant again to you? Okay...you're turn to be relevant then. We're waiting, assholes.

I'm pretty sure this is a Joomla built site so it's not as easy since it's a different structure programming wise. It operates differently and the admin is a pre fabricated system with it's own faults and strengths. You can't just 'add an edit button'. You have to create a whole new module that fits into the admin and then give that same edit function to the admin in case they need to edit a post. So now you've got two new functions accessing the database which while not the end of the world means you have to test and then fix the whole site when those two new functions have negative affects on the rest of the site in any given part. You also get to go find what you broke after you add it. My advice: scrap Joomla and have a proper dev team redo the whole thing from scratch in a new custom interface tailored to the business.

    by D.Vader

I don't know what this movies is, and absolutely nothing you wrote changed that fact. Do better. For gods sake, and for your website's sake... Do better.

  • And anyone here who perpetuates it is a flat out malicious liar! Anyone can say some nasty stuff when they're driven to it and impaired, but you show me one tangelble piece of evidence that Mel Gibson is anything other than a decent human being with no more flaws than any of us. Because I can substantiate the "decent human being" claims from actual testimaonial from reputable sources about his actions as a friend and professional! Even Gibson's ex-wife of over two decades refutes any insinuation of him ever being an abusive husband or father. And she's already taken Mel to the cleaners and has absolutley no reason to pipe up to his defense other than the fact that she knows he has his problems but is ultimately an honorable man.

Anyone who says this site will be "fixed" is full of shit

    by D.Vader

This site has had a TERRIBLE talkback interface for OVER A YEAR. It's been over a year since Harry hada security breaks and we were forced to use this shitty talkback code where no one can use quotes without erasing their posts (unless they know the secret which AICN refuses to post on every page). And Harry said this would be TEMPORARY. Does "temporary" mean "over a year" in Harry-speak? I doubt it. All it does is show he's full of shit and empty promises. Actions speak louder than words. Everyone knows this. So sorry, MontyCristo, if no one believes this site will ever be "fixed" and will continue to exist in the broken state it currently resides in. If you have to only email someone to explain the situation, you've already failed. Why? Because you're refusing to explain yourself to your entire fan base/readership, which is who you should be addressing in one fell swoop. Let's be respectful towards one another, shall we? And let's start telling the truth. We deserve that much, don't we?

One day they'll let Gibby back into their good graces as long as he's eaten enough crow and they can feel substantially superior for doing so. But for right now they're all still indignantly threatened by Gibson's immense talent and fortitude. The sadist aren't done watching him bleed just yet. They demand satisfaction for the impudence of Gibson to dare color outside their lines! Oh and teabaggerharry, the elusive word you were searching for to discribe Gibson's conspirers and persecutors - could it possibly start with a z and end with a ionist?

    Lethal Weapon 5 anyone?

    by Motoko Kusanagi

I'd like another LW movie. This looks interesting, too but........

  • John Wayne, Lee Marvin, Sean Connery, Oliver Reed, Robert Shaw, Clint Eastwood, Patrick McGoohan, Steve McQueen, and many more besides. All these icons, most of whom are now sadly gone, had various issues and incidents with the bottle, and/or with spousal abuse or violent incidents against women, and/or with bigoted viewpoints or statements. But I guess it is okay to forgive them their mistakes or flaws, and idolise them whole heartedly, while simultaneously raking Gibson over the coals for the rest of his fucking life for his self same mistakes and flaws. You know, because the media and a bunch of anonymous internet assholes encouraged you to. The amount of shit that they guy has to constanly eat for his sins, it's amazing that Gibson is ever sober...

Riggs is too old for this shit. And Murtaugh according to LW3 would have retired completely by 2002. Besides which, LW4 sucked and LW3 was only somewhat passable. The first 2 were great though. As for Gibson's stigma, you can drug and rape a 13 year old in the ass (Polanski) or record yourself getting sucked off by a 12 year old boy (Salva) and it's "why are you talking about old shit?) but DO NOT insult the Jews.

  • This makes them the ultimate minority. They can all just drop it. I'm not giving any religion a tax break anymore. I'm taking away all of your religions. It's no longer safe for the world to have religion. Effective immediately. I am going to rid the world of all brainless devotion to mindlessness. You had plenty of time to get your heads together. Now we're moving on and embracing logic as it pertains to the constraints of this reality. Hope you enjoyed your silly fun beliefs while they lasted. Alright now hold still. There. Wasn't so bad was it? Now that I've removed your religion you can think more clearly. Isn't that nice?

I remember seeing Mel Gibson in that Tina Turner movie

    by ajit maholtra

It was called Welcome to the Thunderdome. In the movie, Tina Turner was in love with Mel Gibson and was trying to make him her boyfriend, but he kept trying to get away from her because he doesn't like black ladies. It's a good movie.

  • Please. I can't tell you how many times I've sat in the midst of a group of caucasians or even in the company of more mixed company and heard them utter the N word or worse when there are no minorities who they think might be offended by it in the area. And this is stone cold sober. Every time I see a fight break out between two people, even two people you never would have thought had a racist bone in their body and probably don't really harbor any ill will against any group of people, one of the FIRST insults out of their mouths is almost invariably aimed at their sexuality, ethnicity, or religion. Why? Because when you get pissed off, your brain is searching for the first thing to throw their way that might get at them - and the most surficial and obvious, the more likely it is to be used. Something as obvious as ethnicity, religion, etc, is of course going to be first out of the gate, even IF the person saying it doesn't actually hate that group of people. How many of you have called someone a fag - using what someone is (e.g. a homosexual individual) as a pejorative? How many have said nigger when there are no black people around, and then shut up immediately when someone who is black comes into the room? How many have laughed at the many rants and jokes at the expense of a jewish character on South Park? How many have gotten into fights or gotten angry at someone and hurled racial slurs or religiously charged rhetoric? I'm willing to bet that just about every single one of you who has been so quick to lambaste Gibson for his drunken behavior has said things at least as offensive when stone cold sober. But you're not the one under the microscope, so no sweat off your sack, eh? Mind you, I'm not attempting to defend his behavior as righteous - I'd just as soon prefer that we all let the whole antiquated concept of difference, be they ethnic or otherwise, go. However...some of you people just can't seem to realize that movie stars fuck up too. They are not absolved of their wrongs - in fact, they suffer more for every miss-step, because it is all broadcast around the world in minutes and endures not for minutes, as with the rest of us, but for the remainder of their lives. nobody cares if you insult jews - because you are a nobody. If you are known, THEN it becomes an issue.

    by skiprat1

I apologize if this has already been brought up in Talkback. Wikipedia - the font of all knowledge - mentions this movie as being a sequel. Was it originally intended as such? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Payback_%281999_film%29#Director.27s_Cut I searched around (for a couple of minutes), but couldn't come up with anything else.
