Nordling here.

Yes, indeed, that PROMETHEUS trailer rocks.  But Fox isn't done yet, apparently - it also debuted the new ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER trailer as well.  And I'm sold.  This isn't tongue-in-cheek stuff - Timur Bekmambetov is playing it completely straight, and I think that's what makes everything I've seen so far work so well.  WonderCon showed the new trailer, but here it is online in all its glory.  There's an IGN watermark on it, but I can't find the link to credit them on their site, so visit IGN when you get the chance, okay?

Nordling, out.  Follow me on Twitter!

Honestly, the title alone was enough to get me to see this movie. But now that I've watched this awful trailer, all interest has shriveled like it just stepped out of the cold ocean. That might make it the worst trailer ever. I need to think about this.

I enjoyed the book tremendously - possible SPOILER

    by I Max U Mini

It stuck very close the real history of Lincoln while adding the supernatural elements to the story we all know. That said, unless that shot of Washington, DC is from near the end of the film, it is wholly inaccurate. The Washington Monument wasn't topped off until 20 years after Lincoln's death.

  • March 18, 2012, 4:54 a.m. CST

Things people are hating on are exactly what made the book work...

    by Steepdog1

What made the book work was that it took itself 100% seriously. It acknowledged no sillinest in its concept. I agree that "Cowboys and Aliens" took itself TOO seriously. The major difference is, we already know the story of "ALVS." Cowboy's and Aliens' problem was that it was not as fun as the title implied it would be. ALVS's story is fun. We get actual history filled in with fantasy in a way that makes sense...that alone is fun. The action is fun. Abe frickin Lincoln Bad-assedly swinging an axe and lopping off a vampire's head is fun, even if it takes itself seriously. We care about Abe as a hero and want what he wants (I really didn't care that much about Daniel Craig's Character or if he got what he was after in the story) Abraham Lincoln is not goofy or funny. The civil war was not funny. This doesn't mean the story isnt fun. This story tells us how the Abe Lincoln we know from history became that man(albeit by making up a fantasy/action story about vampires) . Trying to make that a campy story would undermine the man we commonly accept Abraham Lincoln to have been. What we have is A +X= C. The story has to solve for "X". If A is a serious story (what we know about Abe's early life) and C is a serious story (what we know about Lincoln's Presidency and Legacy) then it makes no sense to have X be "campy toungue-in-cheek action that doesn't take itself seriously." You cant get to "c" from that. I think those hating already just don't have the imagination for this film to work for them. If you can't get over what you think a movie with that title SHOULD be...than you wont be able to enjoy what it WILL be.

Lincoln fought off death for NINE hours after he was shot.

    by gotilk

And he used to hold a heavy axe with 2 fingers out in front of him. Sound easy? Try approaching your 60s back then and doing it. He was a muscular fellow and tough. He and his valet got smallpox. He sneezed for a few days and kept working. His valet died. Should be good fun to see him transformed into an action hero. At least he COULD have been one in earlier years. Not like that twink Santorum. They won't be doing mash-ups about him unless they involve bukkake and lots of running away from things bigger than himself. Like his sexuality.oomph.

When do we get the Nixon hunting ghosts movie?

    by lv_426

Dick Nixon: Supernatural Spycraft Master Nixon believes that the White House is haunted after he moves in to serve his term as Commander in Chief. He must rid the place of poltergeists and other demonic entities with the help of the benevolent spirits of past presidents that still linger in the Oval Office. This is why Nixon had all kinds of recording devices planted in the walls of the White House. To catch EVPs of evil spirits. Of course the twist ends up being that Nixon was just imagining all this spiritual activity, and then gets flak for eavesdropping with his spycraft audio gear.

The thought pattern or social make up of those who are screaming this looks awful. But seriously, I don't want to call you haters as that solves nothing and the flame wars are also a waste of my time. I wish to understand why I look at that trailer and think it looks awesome and the idea intriguing? Then there are those above who think the polar oppostite. I get the basic "difference of opinion" angle, some folks like Oreo and some Chips Ahoy. But why is that trailer anything but beautiful looking with vampire killing awesome? I for one will be plunking down my $12 on opening weekend! Peace

  • March 18, 2012, 12:32 p.m. CST

How About We Wait and See? Maybe?

I read the book - and thus, I realize I don't come to this from the same direction you might come to it, if you haven't read the book. I readily admit, I read the book on a whim, because I found the book's title, the concept, evoked a sense of brazen, wacky, silly fun. Abe Lincoln - Vampire Hunter? I figured it would be, at best, an over the top, silly read. I was surprised to find the book was a lot more than that. It has a serious, melancholy tone, in large part, and a real sense of "horror" in others (the vampires in this book are every bit the monstrous creatures some of you have been hungering for, since the whole TWILIGHT thing co-opted them). It also had a lot of action - which this trailer highlights. All I am saying is... I'd suggest you keep an open mind. The movie may fail to capture a lot of the book's good features; it may come off as a bad SNL skit with a Lincoln look-alike swinging an axe. But it may not - it may draw on those aspects of the book and give us a lot more than this trailer might suggest to you. Granted, a trailer's job is to get you wanting to see the movie, and I have no idea if that is working or not, generally. But the concept may just be a tough sell. I read the book more out of curiosity than out of a "WOW - gotta read this" reaction. I have my fingers crossed. Just suggesting that you not judge too harshly, too quickly. And maybe give the book a try!

Lincoln might have actually liked this...

    by jorson28

I used to be uncomfortable with this story/movie, but now that I think about it, the real Lincoln allowed a lot of "exaggeration" regarding his physicality and exploits during his actual political campaigns in addition to telling a few self-deprecating, tall tales, himself, so given that and the sense of humor for which he was known, I'm not sure he'd have a problem with this. Therefore, why should any of us? It still paints him as a hero (albeit a different kind) and unless the trailers are hiding it, the movie doesn't concern itself with criticism of his actual policies.

  • Whoever it was, they put up a pretty good argument.

  • March 18, 2012, 1:25 p.m. CST

    the book

    by LethargicJ

I also read and loved the book so I don't understand how other people read the book and think these trailers look anything like the book. To me this feels like League of Extraordinary Gentlemen all over again. A book with a silly high concept that works because it was so well written is turned into a movie with a silly high concept that ignores the story and characters to just be an over the top action-fest. The book was awesome because it was like a straight forward serious Lincoln biography, yet he happens to kill vampires in it. He didn't have superpowers, he wasn't doing wirefu and Mary Todd Lincoln didn't have a ninja sword. This movie looks terrible.

  • March 18, 2012, 1:34 p.m. CST

    I love these trailers

    by Vern

I had no interest in this movie based on the title. Sounds like a dumb one joke movie for people into stupid Chuck Norris oneliners and other smarmy internet bullshit. But unless these trailers are lying they have done the movie as a dead-serious, balls out absurdist action movie. It's hilarious and it's ballsy because, as seen above, alot of the people they need to get money from don't understand humor that doesn't poke you in the ribs and tickle you and explain itself to you and wink six times. Also since it's that guy that did Wanted there is the sense that maybe he's just crazy and he's actually serious about a movie where Abe Lincoln spins an ax around and jumps across and exploding steam engine, and if so that's even better. Yes, it's possible that it will "tank." Which doesn't affect me, since I'm not hoping for a part 2. I thank them for making this ridiculous movie that at least contributes to the world in the form of these trailers. I hope the movie is as good and that if everyone still hates it they'll catch up to it years later like they did with STARSHIP TROOPERS.

    by IAmTommyWiseau

You think The Dark Knight Rises is the only good movie coming out this year? We're spoilt for choice with Ridley Scott's return to the science fiction genre, and The Avengers as well as The Hobbit and Skyfall. If there's no movie you want to see, why are you here? Why aren't you outside gardening or reading a book or doing something better with your time? If you've given up on movies then you've obviously been watching the wrong ones. Take Shelter, Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, Warrior, The Tree Of Life, Martha Marcy May Marlene and many others were great last year. Finally, if you're going to respond to someone complaining about people being negative on AICN, don't you think it would be better not to be one of the people he's talking about? You. Are. A. Tool.

    "playing it straight" you say

    by runfoodrun

Martial arts, super strength Abe Lincoln does not seem to be playing it straight. Could still be a cool movie, but what if they did play it straight were Lincoln, President in the middle of a war, also had to take on a vampire menace only he and a few others know about? And they do so without super powers and martial arts moves. I'm sorry, but that guy is not knocking down a tree in one blow. Why can't his intellect be the reason alone he can prevail instead of the over the top stuff? Then it would be played straight.

Are we really going to have this discussion EVERY time they release a trailer? This is a VAMPIRE movie. Vampires are immortal. It takes place over many years. Martin Luther King Jr was in the book. Seriously, do you really think a book about a president who fights vampires, one who was famously assassinated, doesn't end with that assassinated president becoming a vampire? Really? That didn't dawn on you? Spoiler alert.

  • Let it be a nice one-off. Leave the classics alone, write new shit. That's how it's worked all through history. Read, learn, get better. Fucking hippity hop ripping off - er... "sampling" catchy rock hits written decades ago, slipping them into their shitty dittys and calling them "hooks," rhyming cat with hat and boom, unoriginality wins. That udder don't run dry and now the Euros win, at least when it comes to being justifiably pretentious. There's other shit you could factor in.

If the movie is at all true to the book...

    by Steepdog1

The "Wire Fu" stuff is besides the point. I agree, I wish they would have gone with a more conventional fighting style... Abe in the book did have fighting skills but not superpowers... I dont think this movie means to imply that he has superpowers but it goes back to Hollywood trailer makers missing the point of what people want to see in movies. Rember the Thor trailers that thought that the goofy gags were the absolute best parts of the movie...and made the movie look like it was going to be a cheese-fest...and then it ended up that the gags in the trailers were the only ones in the movie and the tone of the film was completely different? I think thats what we have here. Hollywood thinks average Joe Idiot wants to see wirefoo action, so those are the bits of the movie it cobbled into this trailer, even though these moments are hopefully few and far between, with more traditional fighting filling out the rest of the action. What makes the book work is that it builds the same respect for Aberham Lincoln the Vampire Hunter as we already have for Abrham Lincoln the president. the action is secondary to the developement of Abe's character.

As absurd as the premise may seem looks fun

I mean it's funny though if you read the book it's based on it's not done in a jokingly way. LOL as weird as that maybe the arthur tried to take it as if this was a lost piece of Abraham Lincoln's history. All logic should say laugh at this project, but I'm willing to give it a shot.

Well, it's a Timur Bekmambetov film...

So I'm expecting two hours of nothing but intense visuals that try to carry an ultimately hollow movie. Night Watch, Day Watch, Wanted. None of them are particularly good movies (a loom that gives hits?) but they all have some sort of appealing visual stimuli that draws you in.
