Gavin O'Connor Is Taking Us Off To NEVERLAND!!
The Kidd here...
It looks like there's no end in sight to the wave of fairy tale movies heading our way (at least SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN looks good), so you might as well add Peter Pan to the mix of characters to receive new big screen treatment.
Gavin O'Connor, who directed the critically acclaimed but little seen WARRIOR last year, is in to step behind the camera for NEVERLAND, an origin story of Peter Pan and Captain Hook in a new take on J.M. Barrie's source material. Channing Tatum was rumored to star, but he'll only be serving as a producer, alongside his partner Reid Carolin, having put this idea together, according to Variety. Billy Ray (STATE OF PLAY, THE HUNGER GAMES ) has been tapped to write the script for the timebeing.
This could very well work out if the right Pan and Hook are found to build the foundation for their rivalry, but how many fairy tale flicks will finally be too many before Hollywood decides to move onto some other trend?

Yes, the world is in urgent need of another dozen-or-so versions of Peter Pan.

So this is how Hollywood rewards directors who turn in an awesome movie(Warrior)?
by Tikidonkeypunch
Saddling them with a shitty premise for what will be a shitty movie. Well, it could be good but everyone will ignore it because we dont' need another f'n Peter Pan movie...period. Maybe if it was Peter Pan in space...
-
Set in the same universe as the original yet at the same time rewriting his orgin.
-
I think Tatum was going to be Hook. Which frankly boggles my mind more...
-
or the sir cliff richard story... he's the peter pan of pop.... or there is darker version... Micheal Jackson..

wear fingerless gloves and silver slippers? Also, will the crocodile have a snout or will they be going the Steve Ditko route for the design? Can't wait for the Lego SWAT pirate figures.

When Hollywood does the gritty origin of Peter Pan equals they are completely out of new ideas
by kirttrik
It's that or they are complete cowards unwilling to create, or attempt to create, new work. But when new work equates to new billion dollar franchises, then you realize it's not really a a good movie Hollywood wants to make. They are mining for gold, it makes perfect sense that films coming out are only based on existing franchises. And that the only new franchises produced are coming from the likes of James Cameron who is essentially independent from Hollywood financing.

less than 10 years ago with Hogan's crazy, but good, re-telling. And before that was Spielberg's. WTF?

Question is, will this be called Pan Rises, or Rise of the Hook?
by Tikidonkeypunch

And Julia Roberts for Peter Pan
-
Yep, just done with Rhys Ifans as Hook & also starring Keira Knightley, Charles Dance, Anna Freil & Bob Hoskins. Can't really see the studios improving on this. Does anyone know what happened to a Pan project Russel Crowe was supposed to be circling that saw a cop called Hook chasing down a psychopath called Pan?
-
Aren't there like 2 Peter Pan projects already in the works? Someone else doing the real story? Or is that Pincchio? I heard the writer hated children and those books were his way of working out his bullshit on the page. Apparently, the real Pinocchio was quite the giant asshole...he kills the book version of Jiminy Cricket (a dick move in any universe) and is a complete asshole to Gepeto. I wonder if the Berg saw this and had a fractional second of panic. Bad memories. Bad, bad memories.
-
What happened to this? Wasnt she supposed to star as Tinkerbell in some reimagining of that story?
-
How could this not be good?

Even Spielberg not far from the top of his game couldn't make this shit work back in the day with Hook

Hook was amazing and has one of the great John Williams score. Recognize. -Namaste-
-
RU-FI-OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
-
Totally blew
-
Or not. There's like half a dozen Pan adaptations in the works. Which one was this?
-
One of John Williams' best scores. We've had this debate before, but I for one love HOOK. Always makes me feel like a kid again.

I really liked the last Peter Pan. I just watched the DVD a few days ago with my kids. The story was a little darker than i remember, but my kids reacted to it, and they seem to have enjoyed the movie as well...

Warrior was one of the best movies of 2011!
-
Otherwise this movie can go fuck itself. The end.
-
this sounds bad
-
Two origin stories we desperately don't need.
-
SHUT IT DOWN!!!
-
WARRIOR blew me the fuck away, and I was looking forward to O'Connor's next. Another Pan flick is like a Tim Burton - cash in. Come on man!
-
Just because.
-
Didn't they JUST do the exact same thing? I saw it in the video store today in fact. Rhys Ifans plays HOOK and its an origin story and its called NEVERLAND.

the best part of Hook was the buildup to grown up Peter Pan being wisked away to Neverland
by lv_426
After that it all sorta went downhill.

What will be better, new school Peter Pan remake, or the Leprechaun reboot?
by lv_426
At least Warwick Davis is having a comeback with his show on HBO and maybe reprising his role as the evil leprechaun. Maybe we'll finally get a Willow II? Perhaps after The Hobbit makes a shitload of money, and the studios are then desperate to green light any old fantasy film they can get their hands on.
-
what chance does anyone else have? And yes, Williams' score was great. But God the film was a boring mess. And not just because I can't stand Robin Williams.
-
Yeah, that'd be great, with a bloated Val Kilmer as a drunken Madslabarfast or whatever his name was. Is the red haired chick still doable because she was hot.
-
WTF? Why do these fools in Hollywood and beyond insist on remaking the same film every three years? There's the Disney series, Hook, Pan, Peter Pan, and the SyFy Neverland... While many are interesting and sometimes well-told interpretations or re-imaginings of the tales, WHY do we need yet another of the same film? For comparison, let's say we have a new Star Wars film interpretation every three years, by different directors and producers, and no affiliation with ILM/LucasFilm... The astonishing backlash to such an event is what i am going for here. Why the hell are they doing this crap YET AGAIN???? We have so many frakking stories out there that they could use. Like Ender's Game (rumored to be in preproduction) and The Chronicles of Amber (Roger Zelazny) and Pern (Anne McCaffrey has been trying to get a film/television series off the ground for decades) or even the Dragonlance novels, both the core trilogy (Dragons of: Autumn/Winter/Sprung/Summer) and the Twins trilogy: (Time/Test/War of the Twins)... The Elric saga by Moorcock... Then there are countless other series and novels and short stories that would be totally mind-blowing and crazy insane if done with the finesse and respect for fans and canon of the stories... STOP re-hashing these same damn stories that we have seen more times than our moms wiped our backsides as infants! Get the rights to these or any stories never seen on film. Do it right and respect the power of the tales and we will PAY good money to see them.

Robin William and Julia Roberts are both pretty annoying. Otherwise, it's a pretty solid flick.

HOOK is just ok, but definitely one of the lesser Spielberg efforts.
by Orbots Commander
If the Beard himself couldn't really make Peter Pan soar, figuratively, then what chance does anyone else have? Hogan did a solid job tackling this material from the non-fiction biopic side, with Johnny Depp, so, I'm not sure what other angle there is to explore with this tale. Channing as Pan, in an origin story? Um, isn't the dude in his early 30's? Yeah, for Pan, that's old. And I loved, loved WARRIOR, but was hoping that Gavin O Conner's follow-up would have been something else. Him undertaking a Peter Pan "dark and gritty" re-imagining, with LOTR style battle sequences, makes this an instant dismissal. Really, pfft.

The Lost World, The Color Purple, 1941, Always, The Terminal, Tin-Tin and of course, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. That said, the man's a movie legend, no doubt.
