Return To JURASSIC PARK In 2013 For A 3-D Re-Release!!

Published at: March 16, 2012, 12:43 a.m. CST by The Kidd

The Kidd here...

It's going to be easy to jump on the bandwagon and cry out "Why Spielberg why?!" with Universal Pictures confirming that they'll be re-releasing JURASSIC PARK in theatres in 2013 in post-converted 3-D. However, let's just examine one important aspect of this news...

It's JURASSIC PARK back in theatres... back on the big screen... as you fondly remember it...

Period.

After the debacle of replacing the guns in E.T. with walkie-talkies, Spielberg vowed to never again digitally alter any of his films as his buddy George Lucas has insisted on doing for years. Therefore, there's a part of me that believes he wouldn't be a part of doing this unless it was going to be done right. From what I've heard, James Cameron was able to do some pretty fantastic things in converting TITANIC to 3-D, so it's not impossible for this to be done right. Just think of that first appearance of the T-Rex, and how sweet it might look when he plants that foot in the mud in the foreground with Dr. Grant and Lex pressed against the Jeep in the background. The potential for that depth of field display is incredible.

However, even if you want to run with the thought that all 3-D is bad (that's a sweeping generalization) or all post-conversion 3-D is bad (that's a different argument), that doesn't change the fact that there will still be a small segment of theatres that will offer up JURASSIC PARK IN 3D (as it's being called) in 2-D. You can leave your hate outside the door and still marvel at dinosaurs at the movies in what is sure to be a print that matches the one we got on the recently released Blu-ray box set.

I can't see anything wrong with that.

There's still something incredibly cool about being able to see some of these films in theatres once more, because there's just no way your TV can match that sense of awe. Disney has managed to embrace this trend of getting new generations to love their films. Lucas will get there eventually once he gets the prequels out of the way and moves onto the Original Trilogy. It's nice to see Universal and Spielberg getting the message that some things will always be better seen at the movies... we'll just have to bite the 3-D bullet to get it, something I'm willing to do, because it's better than nothing.

JURASSIC PARK IN 3D is set for a July 19, 2013 release, just about a month past its 20th anniversary. It'll still be one hell of a summer movie, and, if you're looking for any further benefits to this, it's currently lined up against GROWN UPS 2 on the release calendar. Tell me you now don't want to see JURASSIC PARK however you can that weekend just because it means beating another horrible Adam Sandler movie.

    by Dick Jones

4 years ago the mother of my child and I couldn't come up with a name for our kid. We argued back and forth for months. Until one day in our little apartment we were watching Jurassic Park. And thus how my son received the name Ian.

Not a 3D hater, but fail to see the reason for this...

    by Hint_of_Smegma

...beyond pure greed on the part of the studios/Spielberg. The Lucas mode of moviegoer/fan fleecing is spreading it seems. I've no issue with older films being given special nights at local cinemas, it's a wonderful thing. Heck, even a full blown rerun endorsed by the studios like this is fine - after all, it's up to people if they want to go pay their money again. But changing an existing movie - a pure marketing ploy, well I dunno. Just seems a bit more of a tacky, cash grab than just a straight re-release. I don't want non-3D films made into it. I want a film to be as it was made, a product of it's time. For some reason, it also screams to me for some reason of the studios saying, "we really can't be arsed anymore, here's a successful movie you loved before, go pay and see it yet again because we don't want to risk money on making new spectacular films that might fail". Or is that just me.

    by F1rst

Filmed natively in 3D. If Spielberg wants us to pay for a dinosaur movie in theatres again, then maybe he should film a new one. Sick and tired of being quadruple-dipped by the studios and filmakers. Hopefully this will make even less money than phantom crap 3D and put an end to this practice.

    Couldn't agree more...

    by Chris

With the Kidd and bass ackwards. Seeing Jurassic Park on the big screens again in booming surround sound is worth the price of admission alone. I hope the 3D conversion is good, but even if it isn't then this is a ticket I'm more than happy to buy.

and it doesn't really reflect the way our eye perceives space. it's just some weird bullshit thing the studios invented to get butts in seats. because God knows, they're not interested in captivating or original stories.

    3D Post-> Colorisation

    by Tassium

It's basically the same thing. And it is a major change to the asthetics of a film so if Spielberg is involved in this he's breaking his word. 2D films are already "3D", in the way they are lit and how the camera is moved to create depth. Wack a 3D conversion on top of that and it's like colorising B/W films, it's wrong.

One of the most important movies of our time...

    by bcom77

Saw Jurrasic Park on tv a few weeks ago and I was amazed at how well the CGI stands up today. The scene where the t-Rex attacks is still as amazing and tense today as it was back then. I remember watching it at the movies as a kid and being absolutely petrified as it looked so real. Sure there were movies before JP that used cgi (Tron, The Last Starfighter etc) but Jurrasic Park was the first to make it look and feel photo realistic. Like it or hate it, it's one of the most important movies of recent times... And a damn entertaining one at that!

  • This 'source' turned out to be a FAKE, but perhaps it's only a matter of time for this and other Spielberg hits? As far as JURASSIC PARK goes, I can't wait to see that in 3D!

  • March 16, 2012, 4:22 a.m. CST

Probably one of my favorite films, and will probably go see this.

    by Gene Cowan

I was too young to get to experience it in the theaters the first time, so I would love to be able to do that, 3D or no. Any word on the 4th one? It'd be cool if they released JP4 the same year as this.

  • March 16, 2012, 4:23 a.m. CST

    JP$

    by Stormwalkers

Typo in the subject... but thought it was hilarious so leaving it... Annyway... JP4. Just shut up and take my money already Spielberg. I will watch JP4. I won't see a 3D movie. Fucking make JP4, make it 2D and go back to a simple story with a good cast. JP2 and 3, were out of control, they got caught up in the sequalisation of things where each movie has to be bigger and better than the last. Not true - if JP2 just continued the story and borrowed more from Crichton's work it would have been phenomenal. JP4 should be a prequel. Set before the events of JP1. It should focus on the building of the park, there's gotta be a reason the lawyers wanted to shut the place down before it had even opened its doors - and you can't tell me a single Velocirpator attack would make investors nervous in the grand scheme of the concept of the park. There were hints all through the movie of computer bugs, Nedry screwing up - or his predecessors. Let's revist some of that territory. In fucking 2D.

  • March 16, 2012, 4:29 a.m. CST

Im so sick of this 3D bullshit.

    by MONKEY BUTT

Other than Avatar in 3D Imax, 3D has only been a disappointment. Even Avatar was far from perfect. The image was relatively dull, blurry and jittery. It looks far better on 2D Blu-ray. When will Hollywood realise that the overwhelming number of moviegoers think that 3D sucks. Oh wait, how silly of me to assume Hollywood gives the slightest fuck about the public. They only have their eyes on the green in our wallets. I'm all for a remastered re-release of the 2D Jurassic Park, but fuck 3D.

Phantom Menace 3D was my worst cinema experience ever

    by kwisatzhaderach

Will give this a miss - also due to the fact I saw it around 12 times when it first came out and know the film by heart. Cool for kids who haven't seen it before though.

  • Spielberg was busy filming SCHINDLER'S LIST, and Lucas edited JP in Spielberg's absense, and the edited results was sent to Spielberg in Poland via satellite link. So, basically Spielberg gave approval, but it was Lucas who did the heavy lifting in the editing room. So, when you guys praise JP for how well paced and what a cool adventure movie it is, remember that Lucas had a lot to do with how much you love it. The same way Lucas had done before for RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. So that you know.

Jurassic Park is still my favourite cinema experience

    by SUPERJIM

I was about 13 and I think it created my love of movies. This could be well worth a watch in 3D if they do it right. However, some of the CGI hasn't aged well. The scene where they are "like a flock of birds evading a predator" (I want to call them Gallamimus or soemthing?) doesn't look great.

  • March 16, 2012, 5:06 a.m. CST

WTF! Why try it? Why go ahead?

    by Can

Did TPM make that much of a return in 3D that Lucas convinced Spielberg to do Jurassic Park in 3D? Make JP4 god damn it and stop wallowing in the past success of movies that should now be left alone. Spielberg, do JP4! NOW! And then, Indy 5! NEXT!

    JP 4

    by Vince

I like the fact that Jurassic Park is still a film that generates interest, it is after all one of cinema's greatest achievement. But I'm not grabbed by 3d in it's current form, it just isn't very good. I'd much rather see a new JP film, I keep hearing threats of one, but still nothing tangible. Come on, just do it.

  • But I could go for one more but only with the original leads. I guess Spielberg and Co figure it would be too contrived to somehow get them on the island yet again and they have too much integrity to....I'm sorry, I couldn't finish that.

I know I shouldn't be surprised by the negativity here, but frankly, I don't understand it. I've seen JP dozens of times, but I saw it once in a theater as a 9 year old in 1993. The fact that I'll be able to see it again in that environment makes me feel like I'm a little kid again. This isn't taking money away from current projects, probably only costs around $10 mil to complete, which is a LOT less than a new JP movie would be, and maybe they'll do a decent job in 3D.
I question the decision to put it in during the summer because it'll be a 20 year old movie in the middle of brand new blockbuster season, but it won't prevent me and several others from going to see it.

    by Dranem

But I went into The Phantom Menace expecting something special and wasn't really that impressed. Plus the dark scenes in movies never really stick out right even when shot in 3D so I think there are big chunks of this movie that will not benefit. Still love Star Wars and Jurassic Park, but I may skip it unless there is a 2D option like some theaters did with Episode I.

    by Mugato5150

Of course if they don't correct for that, everything's going to look dimmer. And 3D is a gimmick now just like it was in the 50's. Yeah, back then they used red/blue glasses and starting with Jaws-3D in 1983 they used polarized glasses. It's all the same shit. It's as 3D as a pop-up book. In the 50's they dragged it out because they were afraid people wouldn't go to theaters because of television. In the 80's they dragged it out because they were afraid people wouldn't go to theaters because of video. Now they're dragging it out because they're afraid people won't go to theaters because....well just take your pick. I will however watch Star Wars in 3D for the opening shot alone. And maybe Empire too.

    by Pipple

I can't believe I missed the sexual content of that scene when I was younger. JP is a seriously fucked up movie for doing that which makes it awesome. You all know what I'm talking about. This is how I do it though, I watch JP3 then JP2 because JP3 is a smaller more intimate film and JP2 seems more like the big overblown finale anyway. And it makes more sense for Grant to go back without him knowing the events of the second film taking place. Hard as hell to see why he'd even go near the island again after an entire military sized group of guys get's fucked over by dinos. So I wish they'd actually release an extended 3D version of 3 instead since I've seen JP a googlebillion times already. And I like the movie as a old style adventure with Grant as DR Quest and the little kid as Jonny, omg why dont they make a Quest movie already...

No problem with the 3D conversions but...

    by ggabyt

they shouldn't charge FULL fucking price for admission. Attention studios: You didn't remake the entire goddamn movie! Charge $5 a ticket and I'll go, but I won't go for $15, sorry. Was there any chance I was going to blow $60 before drinks to see the Phantom Menace in 3D when I have the bluray sitting on the shelf? Not a chance. Would I have spent $20? Yep, and I bet a lot of people feel the same way. It's not nice to feel completely ripped off and that's what these conversions feel like to me.

The price to 3D movies is lame I agree.

    by ZodNotGod

$5 is more than enough, especially for TPM or JP that have earned their money many times over.

We need a decent Land That Time Forgot remake not another JP!

    by LORDOFLIGHT

I know this is a 3D version of the original flick.....but what the fuck else can they do if they do another JP sequel? It'll just be more of the same.

    Post conversion IS bad

    by gotilk

...when you had the ability to shoot in 3d but chose not to and pursued post-conversion on purpose. Yuck. Post conversion of old film doesn't kick babies or anything. Who is hurt? Don't see it.

3D isn't just "bad" it's pointless and bad

    by jazzdownunder

That scene mentioned with the "incredible" potential for "depth of field" already has - in 2D - all the depth of field and perspective information within in that is necessary to convey th story point and create the visual impact needed. Adding FAUX 3D (whether in post or "in camera") can do only 2 things: 1) give some of the audience a headache 2) give greater emphasis to the fact that what is being exhibited is recorded, fabricated material We don't experience reality in the way that movie-3D presents it. How we see in real life is much MORE similar to the way that "2D" is presented. Quite apart from anything else, there is (currently) no such thing as "3D' in movies, only stereoscopic 2D. HINT: Watching a B&W movie through a piece of coloured gel doesn't make it "colour".

Whether the 3D is terrible is irrelevant

    by Rick Webb

It's another chance to see JURASSIC PARK in a movie theater. I felt the same about the release of EPISODE I, and although it is my least favorite SW film, I didn't care. The 3D conversion was terrible, but I was seeing STAR WARS on the big screen again.

I've seen JP more than any other movie

    by vincentkv

It's not my favorite movie, but I was 12 in 94 and probably watched my VHS 300 times. I still think it has the best special effects of all time. I got to see it on the big screen last year with an original-run CD-ROM playing the DTS soundtrack. It was as beautiful as it was when i was a kid, and I WILL see it if someone's playing a 2D copy. 3D conversion thinks it's hot shit in a champagne glass, but it's really cold diarrhea in a Dixie cup.

you are such a stupid retard. who you think supervised kahn's editing? or you think kahn edited the movie and that wa sit, spieblerg and lucas had to accept it as the final unchangeble version? Lucas supervised the diting of RAIDERS and JP, fool. His was the final say so. Because that's what directors and proiucers do. Lucas himself is a producer, he's very savvy on film editing, as he edited his own first movies. Do you understand, fuckass? ignorant stupid cunt. next time you even think about posting some of your usual shit, donopt obhter, because it will be useless worhtless stupid shit . who can afford to go to the movies anymore?

    by cgih8r

its so damn expensive I paid a cool $50 just so I could take my girlfriend to MI3 in Imax...the dark knight prologue washed the regret away but STILL. I used to go to the movies all the time back when it cost $7 but now it costs $10.50 just on standard screens and I save my money for only for select blockbusters and there's plenty of movies I would like to go see but won't because of the price hike. It's pretty crazy when a combo of large popcorn w/ 2 drinks costs you $20!!!! I wish those fat fucks in the snack line would take a stand for once in their lives and say we're not going to support you until you return to some form of sanity!

cricket_midget - I could not disagree with you more

    by Jaka

It's HUGELY relevant. If they can't make a largely digital Star Wars movie look good with post production 3D how is something like Jurassic Park, done with animatronics, going to look?
I agree with you about seeing these movies in a theater again - that is cool. So how about these studio nitwits stop treating us like a bunch of mindless sheep and just re-release these beloved films. The prints already exist for a lot of them, I'm sure. So why not? Well, because if they slap some shitty post 3D work on them they can charge a higher ticket price, and that's some bullshit right there. So yes, bad 3D it is relevant.
Also, I LIKE good 3D. But I have absolutely NO LOVE for this crap they're doing with old movies and new 3D. Leave them alone or release them as they were intended to be seen.
