John Ary shoots a report from MONDO'S Opening!
John Ary with a quick update from Saturday's Mondo gallery opening in Austin. I had the chance to meetup with several intersting folks there including Robert Rodriguez. We'll get to him in a second, but first here's a quick explainer from Mondo creative director Justin Ishmael about what you can expect from the new gallery and Quint chimes in about the state of movie poster art:
People began lining up outside on Friday for the opening, braving heavy rains and cool temperatures. They didn't know what would be available for purchase, but they knew it would be something good. They guessed correctly.

For the first time ever, Mondo offered up this Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan print to the public. You can see its alternate edition in the video above. Eat it new Avengers photoshoped poster!
Several interesting folks stopped by the gallery to take in the art, including the director of Sin City Robert Rodriguez. Here's what he told me about his experience with Mondo:
"What I love about Mondo is that it reminds me of my early days as a cartoonist here at UT. I used to make Xerox copies of my strips and sell them at the local comic book store. And it started a whole trend here in Austin of artists making Xerox copied books and selling them on consignment at Austin Books... Mondo, that's what it feels like. Artists coming together, distributing their art. Mondo in particular means a lot to me because I was their first poster... Their first poster was for a special screening of El Mariachi 6 or 7 years ago. The one poster they made that year was El Mariachi and I still have mine... And to see how much they have grown and support artists and how much they put the focus back on art, that's what's really cool."
The best way to stay up-to-date on Mondo's new releases is to follow @MondoNews on Twitter.

Being an artist, I have never understood this sites fascination with Mondo...
by LowDevil
With all honesty most of the posters are underwhelming. Seriously what is it with this site and Mondo and why do you try so hard to force the point that everything Mondo does is cool? I have a right to criticize as i have a dozen TV credits and 2 film credits to my name as a (real) artist. These guys prob take 2 weeks to make these posters and run them through other artists. Give me 1 week and i would have a better one sleeping for most of those days. I honestly dont get it, clearly Mondo does not either.

why does it make me think of everything except science fiction? come on Mondo. Spock dies, the genesis project, and you whip out red and gold and a bunch of differently sized faces, get your un imaginative shit together
-
Thought so.
-
but this Khan one is too cluttered and badly composed.
-
That BASTARD. Next thing he'll be acting like other human being don't just exist to service his Id. This maniac must be stopped! @lowdevil you've probably never understood sour grapes either. Go on, eat them!

All the obnoxious art fags...like people who get dressed up and wear those dumb cosby hats like that guy in the video...and they have designer glasses and they prob have StarBucks coffee with them...god they piss me off...Art galleries are a scary thing man...I tell ya, i've only been to one, but it's pathetically scary the amount of people that get drawn to these things...we went to one in New York for Quentin Tarantino and Coen Bro's inspired work, and we were the first ones there (thank god) like 3 hours early, but jeezus, when we were leaving that fucking line to get in there stretched all the way down a long ass hall, down 4 or 5 flights of stairs, and all the way outside...and they all buy out all the prints before I can get them too...What really pisses me off is the people who actually have the money to buy the originals...must be nice...Oh yea, and 90% of the Mondo posters suck. That is all.
-
It's all very meh to me. Compare to the two real artists who died this week, and there is a noticable drop-off in, well talent, in my limited opinion. This is hipster art, no?
-
Sure Mondo posters are cluttered, but that was the style with old illustrated movie posters. Do you perfer photoshoped heads? Clean line work, well illustrated with minimalist color and no one else is tackling this subject matter in quite the same way. And to the "professional artists" who are bashing Mondo and the attention they are recieving; do it better. Its that simple. Show your skills, create genre movie posters with your superior illustrative abilities and show the world how sub par Mondo really is. Rise to the challenge and stop hating on the people who are actully doing shit.
-
what kind of movie/pop-culture related art do you like? Just wondering.
-
2 posts, one after the other!? This ain't cool and it ain't news... I've said it before, too many localized stories that merit little interest outside those areas
-
Just sayin...
-
Loved seeing superhero artwork. Has anyone been to a permanent gallery with a focus on superhero art?
-
Powerful stuff.
-
Just curious. I've been tinkering with the idea for some time now. Just not sure if it would make enough money to justify rent, utilities, blah and blah. Does the Mondo Gallery charge admission since they're not selling product on site?

Cool. But John I would recommend using a Lav mic next time.. Sounds like the shotgun mic on the camera?

i can only guess the hacks are friends of the good artists. personally, i don't get the love for the posters by the guy above- he simply redraws from existing, well-known publicity stills and photos, and then crams as many actor's faces as he can into the design. he's too cluttered and doesn't seem to know anything about design, layout or pleasing composition. the things that aren't traced from photos that he has to draw or compose himself don't fit with the look of the rest. it's clean, it's very technical, but it's very soulless and without style. what is an artist without a personal style?
-
Why all the love? Why all the anything? Why all the talkbacking? Seriously, though, Mondo has some good shit, but it's also overrated. Think of the great visual artists that just passed away this last week... and realize that poster artists in general nowadays could do WAY better than they are now. Still. Mondo will always be better than studio photoshop hacks. The challenge is to be EVEN BETTER than that though!
-
Just curious. Is this the first of it's kind? Are there other NON-INTERNET galleries out there open to the public.
-
Most of Mondo's posters are too busy given his choice of an extremely limited color palette. Heavy on the inks and sparse on color. He's going for Drew Struzan but is falling short because of that. The detail is there... but the colors are not.

-- "Gallery Art" based on film and movie images does little to nothing for me
by MooseMalloy
-- Seems like a waste of time and effort. Either go watch a movie or go create some "Fine Art". And sorry RR, self-published photo-copied comics and "zines" were around a long time before you decided to do them.

I like how you don't just shoot the guy talking, but the camera filming the guy talking... That's... That's something...

And I love it. But since then its been impossible to order anything. The site seems to.be a scalpers' paradise. Its really tucked up. Luckily this KHAN print is ugly do I can pass without any reservations. TWOK deserves far better.

There i said it.
