Cool News
MONDO has opened their first Gallery and it was amazing!!!
Hey folks, Harry here... Today I got to go check out the new MONDO Gallery at 4115 Guadelupe St here in Austin, Texas. I attended - as did most of AICN's staff, as did much of the visiting film press that just had to be a part of this latest jewel in the crown of geek cool that is Austin. Here's what you missed if you didn't attend...

C'mon GREAT PIGGY BANK ROBBERY!!!

Loved this painting!
Really love that they didn't go with the 'typical' Robby with the Girl imagery! Very nice!

Yoko and I really wanted to buy this original, but alas it was sold before I could get to it!

That Ming and the FORBIDDEN PLANET can be enlarged. Now, I must head back to SXSW... see ya later! I would love to have a spare few thousand to own that painting. Darn it!
And just for the annoying guy screaming about wanting Struzan... Well, MONDO had an original Drew Struzan painting for sale too...

I like it the first time I saw it...when it was called Gallery 1988.

By the way, Ming from Flash Gordon looks a lot like the Green Monster Guy at the end of the credits of the original Star Trek

I picked up the Tyler Stout Khan poster, and a cool Dune print, too.

It's nights like this I'm glad I've a cousin that lives in Austin

and can send me packages to East Texas pretty damn quick.

Wish it was a portrait of him huddling over a battleship game
-
And went to this and spent way too much on posters.

What If... Nagel lived and did art based on your favorite sci-fi movies
-
Ay? But man Mondo rules.
-
Precocious and amateurish

Very inspiring.

Oh man... I remember seeing Fantastic Planet (or whatever it's called in French)
by atlatl
It totally mindfucked my 10 year old brain.

Who thinks these posters suck. Their "interpetive" designs look like some junior college art major did them as extra credit. Give me the original one-sheets as done by Peak or Struzan any day.

The one of Rachel from BR in the style of Nagel is awesome.
by Bedknobs and Boomsticks
Would love a print of that.

Don't know if there will be one. The painting was so elegant and well done.
-
I keep picturing a MONDO poster for it of Natassja Kinski in that backless pink fuzzy sweater.

...still develop film and media contacts. I'm about to move out of South Lake Tahoe to a bigger city and was going to move to Southern California, but my parents live an hr south of Austin and it seems like Austin is a really good spot to get your start.

100 plus for weeks and weeks on end. I thrive in it, somehow. I hate the cold. Maybe I will eventually call Austin home. Sadly, I bet a LOT of others are having the same thought, over the last few years, in droves. I'd hate to move there and be *part of the problem* , if there is one. Sacramento has had its moments over the last couple of decades, but overall it's a cultural safe zone. As in... they like to keep their culture here very *safe* from certain kinds of new ideas, innovations and controversy. Even when the music scene here was thriving there was a certain trepidation under the surface. A kind of reluctance. Sometimes I feel like Sac is like SF's nephew. SF is our cool uncle we want to impress, but not if it means mom gets mad. lol I can think of only one interesting band that came out of Sac, one with lasting impact that will be around for a long time. CAKE. Pretty much everything else, even Tesla, is already mere ephemera and a footnote in goofy nostalgia programming on VH1. (nice guys though... makes me feel like kind of an asshole to speak the truth) I've always looked up to Austin, and respect it. So I'm resolved to stay put until I know I have at least some small thing to offer it other than just another warm body taking up space and keeping rents high. But then I see events like this, and all of the Alamo stuff, and I want to pack up this minute and just do it. But I won't. Promise.

ALL HAIL MING THE MERCILESS!!! i fucking love that picture, i miss Ming, he'd fuck Lokin in the ass in the 'i'm the king of the universe' stakes! If Ming was the baddie in the Avengers i'd be tempted to see it.
by cameron
Beg for mercy puny human....it amuses Ming.

...looks largely like samples from an art school's theme project. Composition is all over the place, many of them barely echo the movie itself, and a few of them look to have come from the same artist who favors his/her own style (the "shredded" look I'll call it) over actually representing the movie in a meaningful way. In a very few cases (such as Christine, Breakfast at Tiffany's, and even Apocalypse Now), I'd say they were an improvement. I do appreciate it when we see actual artwork and not photo composition. I'd take Mondo's posters in a heartbeat. Of course, I'd take Struzan, Amsel, or Bass posters before even that.

-- "Gallery Art" based on film and movie images does little to nothing for me
by MooseMalloy
-- Seems like a waste of time and effort. Either go watch a movie or go create some "Fine Art".

Thanks. And thanks for the Struzan shot, which only proves my point that Mondo can't even compare, etc, etc, etc...bitch, bitch, bitch...whine, whine, whine...
-
I've been looking for GOT art too. I haven't had much luck, only the Alex Ross direwolf cover for the comic. There's some fan art, but nothing official.
-
...one of the great mindfucks of our time. Saw this as a kid and it left me completely dazed but in a good way. Go, see this movie, if you haven't yet!
