Joss Whedon Reiterates No Skrulls, No Kree In THE AVENGERS!!!

The Kidd here...

Oh, the power of Twitter and how quickly it can spread information...

A Conversation With Joss Whedon is currently happening at SXSW, and already there are some pretty firm statements coming from the panel regarding THE AVENGERS. There's been plenty of speculation as to what other creatures/aliens are coming along with Loki, as seen in the trailers, in order for the Avengers to be called upon to assemble. Popular theory continues to insist that the Skrulls are a part of the action, as recent board games tied into THE AVENGERS showed characters that looked pretty similar to the villainous extraterrestrials. Marvel Studios’President of Production Kevin Feigehas adapted the strategy of "deny, deny, deny" when asked about the Skrulls involvement, saying there are no Skrulls in THE AVENGERS, nor is there any set-up for the Kree-Skrull war.

From his SXSW panel, director Joss Whedon has now jumped into the fray as well, issuing another strong statement that there will be no Skrulls and no Kree in THE AVENGERS.

SXSW attendee French Toast tweeted in the following report:

I'm at the Whedon panel - he just said who the bad guys aren't for Avengers - then said "oh shouldn't have said that." Kree and Skrulls... they aren't the bad guys.

I have a hard time thinking that Feige and Whedon are lying to us through all of this, especially if their "secret" had been found out. At that point, there's no reason to keep trying to hide something that isn't hidden anymore. So, if there are no Skrulls, and, with that, no Kree, fire up the rumor mill once more as to what those aliens in THE AVENGERS will turn out to be...

I was not involved in the movie, but the video game version of AVENGERS (it was cancelled). it was a different story but had skrulls in it. now they may not call them skrulls in the movie, but judging from what i've seen in the trailers so far they look EXACTLY like the skrulls in the videogame.

In that she's the chick who kicks everyone's ass despite being a chick just like Whedon's Buffy, River, the girl in Dollhouse and to a lesser extent, Ripley in the Whedon penned Alien: Resurrection. So despite having a Glock instead of a power suit, gamma-roided strength or God-like powers, she'll probably wind up saving everyone's ass.

i guess the suits are the same-ish (alien tech armor) but the faces are totally different. the board game ones look skrullish, and the lego faces look robotic/insectoid. i don't know what the fuck to think. other than they will be a bunch or generic disposable alien footsoldiers that look like they are in power ranger monster suits.

Why it's not the Skrull or the Kree

    by Comedian

It can't be the Skrulls because the license for the Skrulls is part of the Fantastic Four license agreement with Fox. I wish people would just STFU about the gorram Skruulls- it's NOT them. It's not the Kree because Loki isn't associated with the Kree and I would be willing to bet they would rather use the Kree to bring in Thanos and Captain Marvel at a later juncture. I am willing to bet that it is either the Sons of Muspel or the Knights of Wundagore. I'm actually kind of leaning toward the Knights oif Wundagore because the symbols on the armor are pretty Kirby-esque and even though it doesn't look exactly like them, it might be easy to throw in a story-point about the High Evolutionary helping Loki out by providing his armies. You can link Wundagore and the HIgh Evolutionary with science, which has been a part of every Marvel movie so far. It might still be the Sons of Muspel as well, but I would be willing to bet that they introduce Surtur in the next Thor movie (hopefully along with the Wrecking Crew and/or Hercules). Okay, I'll admit...I don't know who it is, I'm guessing it is one of those two, but one thing I DO know is that it is NOT the Skrulls.

Them Marvel Guys Sure Get Up To SEMANTICS

    by yrimpossible

"Not the bad guys" definitely doesn't eliminate them from the movie. The God Of Lies can surely manipulate a few well-meaning wrinkle-chins (I'm putting that forward as the colloquial from now on). HOWEVER, if the Avengers turn out to be picking off a bunch of pawns it doesn't make them very heroic - they're just as dumb as the aliens they're fighting - and I'm sure Marvel doesn't want to turn all they're heroes they've spent ages building up into mindless plot-slaves. So I say Badoon... or Chitauri... or Power Pack gone mad. It's clear we won't see Ultron until we see Hank Pym.

    by jackofhearts29

he said they aren't the bad guys. Leaves it open that they are in the film, but aren't the MAIN bad guy/s (who would be Loki I presume, and his minions). Maybe they even step in to help. Maybe they are a third party with no interest in the Earth v. Loki battle. Of course, it's not necessary that a studio use tricky wording. They can just lie, like they often do.

How come she doesn't have her 'widow stings?' The wrist blasters that fire lasers or whatever. Those are cool. As for the aliens...I'm really confused. If they're not skrulls...No Badoon. The Badoon are a future race, right? Aren't they a 'Guardians of the Galaxy' deal? They're not very smart, either. Kinda like monster lizard dudes. No Kree...the Kree are VERY smart and they're human-like and they're blue and I just don't think it's them. The Annihilation Wave? Maybe, but the Wave just destroys everything. They would just eat the whole world, not enslave it. If we're gonna go with the Ultimate world don't forget that the Widow ended up as double agent. If it IS the Skrulls than she's a Skrull and she won't be saving the day. I think she might be a bad guy regardless if it's Skrulls or not. That's kinda the cool thing about her character. this isn't the time or place, but since you brought it up, anyone who's against women having the right to control their own bodies and have their health-care subsidized like everyone else, is not 'for women.' If Rush Limbaugh worked for a Catholic institution, he could get his Viagra paid for so he can have his fun with child prostitutes in the Dominican Republic. So, taxpayers would be subsidizing his limp cock. Viagra is ok with the church and they'll pay for it. But a woman who wants contraceptive pills? Slut!!!! Plus, contraceptive pills are used for other reasons besides just birth control, having to do with regulating a woman's cycle and preventing various medical conditions. But shakalakalambo would know that if he'd ever been around an actual woman in his entire life. The right and the Catholic church has brought their centuries-old misogyny just more out in the open with this. A bunch of old, 'celibate' white guys were called in to testify about women's health. Render therefore unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's = Jesus will raise your taxes ...if anyone strikes you on the right cheek turn to him the other. = Jesus won't fight terrorists Jesus Christ...wrong on crime, wrong on social services, wrong on taxes, wrong on terrorism. • Unpaid for Wars ,Medicare senior bill that wasn't paid for, I mean the list goes on. Saying Obama ran up the national debt is asinine. I got tired of the back and forth I saw on tv between the Dems and Republicans and I actually did some research for myself. Over 80% of the deficit is from Bush and then it went up under Obama cause the unpaid for Wars hit the books and a host of other things that Bush left behind. Obama and the Dems added to the deficit mosty from the stimulus that worked for the most part but still created waste. That's my two cents.

Legally they can't use the NAME "skrull"

    by ZackNeruda

A Possible Reason Why It Can’t Be Skrulls In The Avengers Movie February 14th, 2012 Author Graeme McMillan So those definitely look like Skrulls in that Avengers movie toy tie-in… but Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has said that the movie will definitely not feature Skrulls. What’s going on? Well, the answer may revolve around legalities and, fittingly for shape-changing aliens who’re known for invading things secretly, disguises. The Skrulls, you see, originally appeared in a Fantastic Four story, which legally means that their movie rights are held by Fox as part of its Fantastic Four license – at least until such rights revert back to Marvel, whenever that will be .... Another source (though multiple people say this): Avengers Movie Spoilers Suggest Returning Villain & Alien Threat! January 3, 2012 The aliens are now being called The Redacted and are a new version of The Skrulls. Fox still own Skrulls, so Marvel has changed them enough to not get sued. They're multicolored and are shape shifters.

..A BIG nasty shit of an example! To prove that not always is a dream director perfect for a comic book movie or any movie HULK by ang lee..granted the movie has some merits but man was it not a great movie. Ang Lee is a great director and has made great films . Sadly, I think he missed the mark on this. Even so, of the two hulk movies (and they're both weak for diff reasons) Ang lees is a little better but still...not a great movie by a long shot..Several things are wrong with it. Has a weak villain. Its basically an artsy snooze fest, he went too emotional with it/too far the other away and felt forced at that. The action scenes too few and far between..The casting was wrong too. So far the most memorable Bruce Banner is the TV show's Bill Bixby. I think its really unpredictable for movies to work either they work or they don't. Its not solely up to a particular director, there are so many other variables involved.

And acts accordingly. Limbaugh is a little smarter, but he should watch his syntax as well. Geordieuk - "wipe them out"?

    by MisterBlue

I personally don't think that the political conversation belongs in tHis thread so I'll refrain from my own comments, however, no matter which side you fall on politically, the phrase "wipe them out, all of them" should really scare anyone when they read it. Eliminating anyone group of people because of what they believe in reminds me of something that took place in a place called Germany in the 1940s, and when we see someone saying that it should cause us all pause. I will defend a person's right to say what they want, even if I disagree with it. gordieuk, I think you need to think about what that might have meant to your island 60 years ago. Tolerance means taking the high road even when your opponent says idiotic things.

    by Ciderman

He wasn't killed at the end of Caps movie. Perhaps they're saving him up for the next Cap picture. Also being left wing or liberal, not two mutually inclusive points of view Reagan was right wing but liberal, does not make you either socialist or communist. But being socialist doesn't make you undemocratic, communist is a fundamentally different concept, however. The biggest differences between capitalism and socialism seem to be, in the former we necessarily empower the few and the many ideally work to attain what they see the few have gained. In socialism we empower the many, providing for all from the labour of all, as every section of society is reliant on every other part, however insulated they may think themselves. I think humanity is going to naturally gravitate towards socialism, moving into a deep future we will become both more physically disparate from each other but more interconnected, wealth will cease to be the great driver of innovation that it is now, replaced by the wish to fulfill needs instead. Ho hum... Right wingers are, at times nuts, but there are some dingalings on the left as well, humans are weird!

    by ToughGuyRizzo

I mean, with all the super hero flicks that have come out over the last 10 years, we usually got it announced who was the big bad. Doc Ock, Goblin, Zod, Magneto, Luthor, Lizard, shit, in Spidey 3 the thread debating over if was Venom or not in the reflection of Spidey's eye went on for weeks. Either the villain in Avengers is just Loki; or (I'm hoping, knowing Joss & his ability to do something we aren't thinking of) it's gonna a big villain.

  • ...I hope this movie does as well as John Carte! Marvel has has a flop already: Ghost Rider, disney are experiencing their 1st flop of the year: JC So now Avengers - a combined Disney/Marvel movie has not only to turn a huge profit to cover its own costs it has to recoupe some of the hideous debt JC has left on Disneys lap. All this is riding on the directing skillz of Joss Whedon.......... If i was a suit at Marvel & Disney i'd be loading a gun and taking a slug of whiskey right about now.

Whedon Elaborates on the No Skrull/Kree Rationale

    by ShadowVoyd

According to EW, Whedon not only went on record that it wouldn't be Skrulls or Kree at SXSW, but followed it with a fair rationale as to why he avoided them. According to Whedon:
*I will say only this: It is not the Kree or the Skrulls. Those two aliens are Marvel mainstays and have enormous backstories. They have a big life of their own that just could not be contained in a film where I already had seven movie stars." "The Skrulls — they can shape change. That’s a whole thing. I’ve already got Loki. He’s got magic. Once you got magic along with your Iron Man and your Black Widow — it’s a real juggling act.*

  • After Loki faces down Iron Man and Captain America in Germany, he's taken into custody. While in the middle of transport, Thor boards the Quinjet and frees Loki (essentially being thrilled Loki is alive, having a moronic sense of hope for Loki, and seeing Loki's discipline as an Asguardian matter).
Thor and Loki have a hear to heart. Loki gets douchy and Thor finally gets a clue. Iron Man high tails it after Loki, attacks Thor (because hey, he's an awesome douche too) and has his Mark VI trashed for his trouble. Captain America dives out of the Quinjet, parachutes down and has his little face off with Thor too.
Ultimately, the three decide to take Loki into custody together and wackiness at SHIELD (and a hot threesome) ensues. Except for that last part. Joss don't do slash fic.

There's another factor that could doom the Right this election. Note that they will not only USE derogatory language, but then will later DEFEND it. I've seen countless posts saying, in essence that Fluke deserved what was said. Out in California, shock political jocks John and Ken referred to Whitney Houston as a "crack ho" within days of her death. They were suspended, and apologized. But their fans DEFENDED what they said. To say something in the heat of the flow is one matter. To defend it in cold blood implies a tone-deafness, an actual inability to hear what others are saying about their feelings. If you can't hear that, you don't have a prayer of winning their votes. All you can do is appeal to your hard-core base. That's a shame, because our country works best when both left and right are strong and battle out their ideas in public forums. The Right at this moment seems to hold so many extreme positions: global warming denial, UHC denial, immigration, women's rights, evolution denial and anti-science, fundamental Christianity as a political force, gay rights, corporations as people, tax cuts for the rich as the only way to balance the budget, racist rhetoric, and on and on. It's...both scary and sad to watch it happen, but I think they are going to get ground into the dirt in this election. And it didn't have to be this way, but Obama tacked so far to the center that he left the Republicans with nothing but the extreme right. Ouch.

    by Joey_Redballs

Red Skull was pulled into the cosmos by the cosmic cube and ended up in one of the realms\planets of Thor mythology. And Loki fell into a void of the galaxy, ending up somewhere. It seems Loki ended up on Earth, but I'm guessing he didn't land there first. Actually, Loki may not have been impersonating that scientist after the credits in Thor, but rather remotely controlling\possessing him from whatever planet he was on. And that planet is where the Red Skull has been for decades. When Red Skull meets Loki, they both have something the other wants. Loki has a way to Earth, and Red Skull has an army of followers. They may err on the cheap side of things and have these followers not even appear to be alien-like. I'm pretty confident they're not the ice giant aliens.

Some people here know nothing about politics

    by CimmerianWarrior

Obama has no chance of winning. People don't want Obamacare. His party lost 67 senate and house seats combined in the last election. The only reason they didn't lose more is because there weren't a lot more available for them to lose. In November the dems will lose more seats and the Whitehouse. Also in 2010, the dems lost a ton of state and local races and lost governorships too. Everything they could lose they did. The contraception thing was made up out of whole cloth by George steponallofus. It came out of nowhere and had nothing to do with anything. It was an act of total desperation trying to make an issue about something no one had said ANYTHING about. It is NOT an issue. The Economy is in the tank, Gas is going through the roof. It has more than doubled since Obama took office. Obamacare is socialized medicine and the people proved they didn't want it in 2010 when all the dems lost their seats. People know republicans have to be in control in order to repeal Obamacare and they will vote that way again like they just did in 2010. Since then (2010) Obama has made more enemies and he is toast. He has NO chance of winning. None. Romney is going to be president and there is nothing anyone can do about it. No matter what you try to manufacture in terms of social issues, at the end of the day it all comes down to money and whether or not people can afford to feed their families. High gas prices, socialized medicine, regulations and taxes has killed the democrat party. anyone that thinks otherwise slept thhrough november of 2010. Change you can believe in is coming. Bye Bye oBummer.

Pretty sure they are just generic aliens....

You know why? Cause in the first Avengers movie and an ensemble cast you have to spend SOME time on all these characters plus you already have an established villian in the form of Loki. You think in this film they wanted to tackle another complicated set of baddies? Hell no. It's just an invasion from an advanced alien race, that is all.

    It's the fucking ORD!

    by Jaster Mareel

I thought this was common knowledge by this point. Anyone who follows this shit AT ALL should know by now that Fox owns the rights to the Skrull, so it is FUCKING IMPOSSIBLE that it is the Skrull.

  • Fox only has explicit rights to Super Skrull (which is... weird.... as Super Skrull without that species background behind his mission is a bit moronic). I suspect with the reboot in the works, the Skrulls might be off the table (if off the table at all) because Marvel might be willing to extend the character license if the new series shows potential (not to mention any inclination to depict the Skrull in any way).

I lost my mother to cancer about 27 years ago. She had worked hard her entire life, but didn't have medical insurance. Her fear of medical costs kept her from going to the doctor until it was too late. Statistics show that UHC extends lifespans and lowers infant mortality rates around the world. I assume, since you are virulently against all "Leftie" programs, that you are also against UHC, despite the stats, and despite the fact that it lowers per-patient costs. May I respectfully ask what your rationale might be?

Bitch all you want about Marvel, but...

    by Hesiod2k7

...They know how to market a movie. As opposed to the clods over at Disney. I saw John Carter last night. It was entertaining, but not awesome. And I didn't go in with great expectations. Stanton fucked it all up, sad to say. He was doing great up until the point Carter gets transported to Mars. When he wakes up, in the Martian desert, it should have been a "I'm not in Kansas anymore" moment. Instead, it's a: "Oh. How did I get from the cave to the desert I was just riding in an hour ago to escape from the Apaches?" And, the whole trip down the river Iss was completely fucking unnecessary. It could have been cut out, and replaced with far more back story or exposition about Helium, etc.

I think Fox needed the Super-Skrull rights for the finale of FF2.

    by Royston Lodge

The climax of FF2 featured Johnny Storm with all the FF's powers. I'm pretty sure I read that Fox secured the rights to Super-Skrull in order to make sure that scene was nice and legal, just to be on the safe side. Basically, they got the rights to Super-Skrull so that nobody else could use him, not because they wanted to use him at some point.

the last thing this film needed was more back story

Royston Lodge - That actually makes sense...

    by ShadowVoyd

In the kind of way anything at Fox has made sense in recent memory. Though I can imagine someone involved with the reboot might be considering blowing up the picture a bit to raise the FF's epic screen quotient.
Of course, the interesting thing will be the potential in-fighting/haggling involved if Fox does decide to expand the scope of their FF screen adventures while Kevin Feige plots the potential "Marvel Cosmic Universe" he hinted at wanting to see develop a year or so back (with the Guardians of the Galaxy film rumor being the most recent outcrop of that).
This of course begs the question regarding how wide a license Fox negotiated for outside of the core characters and Galactus and the Silver Surfer. There's a huge potential for weak sauce in Fox's neck of the woods if Marvel Studios has hold of all the heavy cosmic hitters outside of Galactus/Silver Surfer despite the copious amounts of Fantastic Four overlap. Of course, it's a moot point if Fox low balls the budget (and the reboot is another half hearted bunt).

  • Are you seriously telling me that fucking bitch can't come up with 25 cents for a fucking condom? If she can get taxpayers to pay for her to fuck ... then film geeks need to get some benefits here too. Seriously. She should only get paid to take cock in her vagina if she fucks one film geek a week. There should be a no-virgins rule in the US. • There is still no reason why taxpayers need to fund birth control. Seriously, people can't afford $6 for a box of 25 rubbers or $22 for 100? People don't see the ridiculousness here? She doesn't want to buy a cheap ass box of condoms in order to be able to take dick on a regular basis, so the government should buy it for her. Should the government supply generic cheapos, or do they have to provide deluxe, flavored, ribbed-for-her-pleasure, lubed, and spermicidal?

Here's an idea. Women shuld withhold sex from rightwingers

    by Hesiod2k7

Permanently. Problem solved. Either the rightwingers will STFU, or commit acts of violence that will justify locking them up so they can get "free love" from their cell mates in prison. Seriously. You can tell which people are trapped in miserale sexless relationships, or whose sex partners include tehir right hand and/or blow up dolls. Any man in a loving, healthy opposite sex relationship would not be saying such outrageously fucking stupid shit as rightwingers are saying on contraception. I mean, Rush Limbaugh's married to a trophy wife who probably fucks the pool boy on a regular basis. The guy needs to take a pill each time HE has sex with his totally uninterested, and out of it wife. So, he figures women need to take a pill each time they do it.

  • March 12, 2012, 3:15 p.m. CST

Actually, Tush's wife probby DOES take a pill before sex.

    by Hesiod2k7

A valium, or some other pill that deadens her senses so she she can block out the fact that a big, fat ugly fucking asshole with Cigar breath is humping her. Fortunately for her, it only probably lasts about 15 seconds.

  • Note: this does not apply to all left-wingers. There are some very cool and great people who hold political views on the left end of the spectrum. There are righties who are very cool as well, just like there are those who are fucking assholes hating on everything on the left. This applied to just the windbags spewing hatred at every turn at people who dare to hold differing opinions. You fucking nutjobs that get your panties all up in a twist when someone like Limbaugh calls Fluke a slut, cheer when someone like Bill Maher calls Sarah Palin a cunt, MILF, stupid, or any number of things. Or the wackos that suggest that anyone that disagrees with them (i.e. all right-wingers) should be locked up, or sex be withheld from them, because god forbid they have offspring. Because everyone knows political views are hereditary, right? The pure unadulterated HATRED for Rush Limbaugh, George W Bush, Sarah Palin, and right-wingers in general, is flat out stunning coming from those that purport to be "tolerant". Yeah, tolerant of everything except disagreement. Those of that ilk are so fucking hypocritical, it's simply pathetic. I am not a fan of any of them, Rush, Bush, or Palin, but the hatred and vitriol directed toward them is incredible. I voted for Bush, but couldn't stand him by the time he left office. Rush takes things to the extreme far too often, but whatever ... nothing he says is worse that the shit coming out of Bill Maher. It's the business that BOTH of them are in and they are on the extremes of both sides. And Palin ... well, it speaks for itself. But does she deserve to be called cunt? To a lot of the hypocrites out there outraged by the Rush comment, I'm sure she does deserve the name CUNT. Obviously Obama shouldn't be called terrorist, etc. The vitriol and the motherfucking hypocrisy needs to end.

    by F This

*Either the rightwingers will STFU, or commit acts of violence that will justify locking them up ... * Who would the right wingers commit the violence against? Women, because they are with holding the sex? So is he really saying that he is hoping for violence against women? Are they collateral damage in teh war against the EVIL right wing? Ok, I know he isn't prom, but that comment is just fucking amazing. Hey hesiod2k7, why don't you get over your hatred and actually hold a civil conversation instead of being so obsessed with wiping conservatives off the face of the earth or locking them up. And the unhealthy obsession with Limbaugh's sex life has got to go.

The Avengers aliens are the Badoon!

    by ComicGuru

Come they have to be. LOL. Skrulls are owned by fox and the freeze frame shots of them show their feet to be identical.

  • March 13, 2012, 3:32 a.m. CST

    One more time for comicguru

    by ShadowVoyd

Skrulls are NOT owned by Fox. Kevin Feige has already reiterated Marvel's license ownership status of the Skrulls and Marvel Studios has them free and clear should they choose to use them. Fox owns the cinematic license to one particular Skrull character (Super Skrull) and if Royston Lodge's reasoning is correct (see above), it was to facilitate a free and clear use of multiple FF powers for the climax of Rise of the Silver Surfer (notably associated with the Super Skrull character).
One thing Kevin Feige mentioned was that Loki's army weren't so much aliens in the traditional sense. When asked if there was a more Nine Realms connection to their origin, Feige hinted that was closer to the right direction. I wouldn't be surprised if they turned out to be something along the lines of the Sons of Muspell.

  • March 13, 2012, 4:57 a.m. CST

    by KGB3317

Very possible. Are their rights owned by Marvel? I'm not a super-geek, so I don't know which minor characters belong to each franchise/studio. That shit is too fucking confusing. Like it really matters what kind of aliens they are anyway. You're all going to see the movie whether it's Skrulls or not. I love that this is the big controversy for The Avengers, and geeks wonder why filmmakers (secretly) hate them.
