Billy Friedkin's KILLER JOE poster is finger licking good! And the movie kicks ass too!
Hey folks, Harry here... Saw my first SXSW movie yesterday, I was invited to check out a tech screening for Friedkin's KILLER JOE, since I'm going to be moderating the post-film Q&A Saturday night at the Paramount - and really wanted to see the film and have time to think about it before the event.
This is a crime film. One of them... kinda like DOUBLE INDEMNITY stories, except taking place in a trailer park with a crazed barknuts pitbull yanking at a chain. Set up in the Dallas/Ft Worth area of Texas, this film deals with drug dealing, professional killing, Life Insurance scams and oddly enough.. LOVE.
There's also more BUSH in this film than anything you've seen in a theater recently that wasn't made in the Seventies. Gina Gershon's character is introduced that way. It feels like a film you'd watch with BLOOD SIMPLE. That hot and sweaty Texas brand of crime noir. Double crosses, general stupidity and sex.
Matthew is pretty great as KILLER JOE, Thomas Haden Church plays a great sad sack, Gina - smoking hot as usual. Emile Hirsch is probably the acting shout out of the film, but Juno Temple is someone I couldn't take my eyes off of her. Her innocence & where she takes it in this film. It's just the sort of intense performance that I love seeing in a Friedkin film.
This is going to play very well at the Paramount Theater Saturday night!

Even his bad films are interesting misfires. But the fact is he's made three of my favorites. French Connection, Exorcist, & To Live & Die In LA. He gets a lifetime pass from me. Now with the new remastered French Connection Blu-ray finally out (With proper colors) can we please get Sorcerer, Cruising, & The Guardian on Blu-ray?

I can't be the only one who read that line by itself and immediately though half the Bush family was featured prominently in the film. Thank fuck that isn't the case.

This movie is hilarious but if you don't like black comedy (or don't really know if you do or don't), STAY AWAY. It's still got a bit of the play trappings and feels a bit confined as a movie but that's the only major issue I had with it. Saw this at the Elgin at TIFF and it tore the house down. It was like a Midnight Madness screening. But seriously - gonna have to repeat it - if you don't like black comedy. Don't see this. If you're one of those people who think Very Bad Things was one of the most vile things ever made. Don't see this.

I Spit On Your Grave has got to be the worst one (the remake). They show a side shot of the chick and she has no bush...then once they flip to the front she's got a huge bush.

I like that they not only have the writer on the poster but they've got him listed after the director. Could a movie poster actually be suggesting that, sure, somebody directed it, but it's the writer who really counts? I'd like to see more of that.

He's a guy who on occasion makes good points, but in between makes far too many stupid comments like the one above. Like many shitty "sayings" on this site, "Fact" is his self proclaimed stamp on every comment. However, I believe he's the only one who believes his comments are all facts. Either that, or he thinks it's funny, which it's not, but who cares, you won't convince him either way. I tend to ignore it.

They were invented by the ancient Egyptians who would shave their pubes because of lice but still wanted to rock that bush. I get it. I love me that bush, I really do. Haven't we had enough of that oil plundering, war monger already? Great to have Friedkin back. Was this based on a stage play? Seem to remember seeing a production with the same name in London about 15 years ago, set in a trailer park. Very tense stuff too, as I recall.

And my eyes and ears are grateful! Checking this out if it's release at the theatre. But something tells me that it might go straight to DVD. Which is a shame. He's in my top 5 fav directors! BTW- I'm excited about Walter Hill's new one as well.

...will make me forget the ridiculously retarded boiled in a bag California bourgeois condo murder story that was JADE. Loved BUG. Love THE FRENCH CONNECTION and THE EXCORCIST. And TO LIVE IN DIE IN L.A. is among my all time favorite movies. I hope this KILLER JOE is as good as it sounds.

I saw her do the play about ten years ago off-Broadway...I guess its the role someone named Juno Temple is playing...cause the role is way too young for Gershon. Great play, will be interesting to see how its opened up.
