Herc’s Thursday TV Talkback!! Yack Now About The Winter Finale of PARKS, AWAKE 1.2, BANG, ROCK, IDOL, PERSON, THE OFFICE & JERSEY SHORE!!
In tonight's winter fnale of "Parks and Recreation" (it returns to the post-"Office" slot on April 19), Ben helps Leslie prep for an interview with an Indianapolis talk show host while Ron and April help Andy prep for a college final.
Meanwhile “The Event” vet Laura Innes returns to the "ER" slot Mario Bello recently occupied to join her latest sci-fi NBC series:
“Awake” didn't set the ratings afire but enjoyed a bigger launch than did prior timeslot holders “Prime Suspect” (1.8) and “The Firm" (1.5) It improved on its “Up All Night” lead-in and beat the 10 p.m. repeats on CBS and ABC last week.
With "Big Bang Theory" a repeat, "American Idol's" Thursday edition tied "The Voice" as the week's top show among adults 18-49.

shit.

... but it feels like having the son kidnapped is way too big and TOO SOON for the second episode. And if you were the lead, wouldn't you see the same shrink in each reality?
-
. . . the HD on this show makes people's faces look the oiliest I've ever seen . . .

I've heard that Awake gets old by episode 4 ... I hope not.
by Gene Cowan
I'll likely stick with the show, since the pilot was excellent. Herc put it up there right underneath "Homeland" territory, though I wouldn't quite put it THAT high. Still a great start tho.

the son is not kidnapped this week

the terminology they're bothering with for these midseason breaks cracks me up (& not in the good way)

christ, you've got some shows that have just now officially returned from their "winter hiatus" to new episodes, and others have only just started their winter break. so damn silly.

Community is back! Didn't see a separate post for this, so I'll throw up the utterly awesome trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pAEyPpYn-Q

It showed him being kidnapped in the ad for tonights episode that was shown after the Pilot.

but they are for Ashley Judd's new show.

Could have been for the few run of episodes, but I don't think so.

Community/DarkKnight mashup is surprisingly terrible.

Someone who paid closer attention to the Awake pilot explain this to me...
by jeffty
Does he live every day twice, or is he moving through the parallel timelines at a regular pace? 'Cause it seems like it would be pretty hard to keep your job if you only showed up every other day. But under the other system, you'd be cleaning up in sports betting. Then again it is just a teevee show.

Its been officially dead for awile now.

Interesting insight from the creator of Awake on what the show is and isn't and the possibilities
by room23storeblogspotcom
I personally tend to not be interested in the 'it was all a dream' stuff," Killen said. "Even if it takes you seven seasons to get to 'it was all a dream.' If you want me to invest in an idea, just do what you promised. You told me in the first week that one of these worlds was real and one was fake and that [Britten] couldn't tell the difference. I understand that there's a value to put a twist on a twist, but I also feel like there's a value to seeing that first story through to the end and finding out, emotionally, what it would mean to discover that there wasn't a way out of the box. That the rules were exactly the way they were in the beginning.

Awake Creator: It's Not All a Dream Writer/creator Kyle Killen tells IGN that one of Britten's worlds is real and one is a dream. There's no third option. Before you watch the second episode of NBC's Awake, "The Little Guy," tonight (you are going to watch, right? RIGHT?), check out what writer/creator Kyle Killen had to tell me about how he's definitely sticking to the premise that one of Detective Michael Britten's worlds is real and one is fake. That's right. There will be no "he's in a coma" third option, folks. None of that "it was all a dream" stuff.
-

Killen then said that answers to burning questions will be dished out regularly, but that he didn't consider the show to be fully serialized. "I think the question of the car crash is the story of the first season," Killen said. "So I think if you can stick with us for 13 episodes then you'll get an answer for that. For us, the idea of which world is real or not isn't a question the show's trying to answer. It's a question the main character's trying to avoid the answer to. Once you stake your claim with wanting to live in two different worlds, that are going in two different directions, then the drama and conflict comes from seeing that person try to live in those two diverging universes. So I don't know that we're going to, any time soon, answer the question of which one is real. We're out to look at what happens when you absolutely, fundamentally refuse to commit to one or the other." That being said, and with Killen ruling out the coma/dream scenario, there's also not going to be any sci-fi elements to the two universes. "I think we've tried to say as grounded as possible," he stated. "That is to say as grounded as one can be with alternate universes. I think we've tried to stay with the notion that 'one is a mental construction that takes place when his eyes are closed and the other is the reality that he takes in when his eyes are open.' You just cannot separate one from the other. As opposed to, say, him literally transferring between parallel universes. I am more intrigued about something the closer it is to something either you or I could experience."

I was definitely intrigued enough by the look of AWAKE to check it out, and impressed enough to tune in for 1x02, but...
by TheSeeker7
I'm just not sure I could see this thing holding up in a legit way for a network series. Then again, I recall no shortage of people were saying the same thing about Lost way back in the day.
-
Since he seemingly lives out a full "day" in the one reality, goes to sleep, and wakes up in the 'alternate' one, does that mean he's essentially living out each day twice (so it takes an average week double the amount of time to take place)? or is he basically in wife reality every Mon/Wed/Fri and son reality Tues/Thur/Sat?

Genuinely enjoying this show so far. It is refreshing to see NBC put out an entertaining, yet deeply layered series, for what feels like the first time in a long time. It is also nice to see a show that seems like it will rewards the viewers that are truly paying attention to what is going in each episode, because there is an awful lot going on that can play out, and be revisited in different ways. Also think casting Jason Isaacs was a stroke of genius. The dude has been criminally under appreciated by many for a long time. Just really hoping this premise can hold up for the long haul, without tripping over itself for the sake of exposition or story arcs. Cheers to a great show so far
-
Forgive the sloppy typos and missed words lol
-
Damn, FOX is ruthless.
-
1. Why aren't there more people he sees in both worlds? Just Fez and the son's friend so far, not counting his own family. 2. Will Innes be his boss in the other world too? Or might it be a whole other conspiracy in the other world? 3. Why does this show keep sounding like a rip-off of my idea?
-
I guess it`s syndication that destroys a lot of series.? The need to have 24 episodes means a `monster` of the week type approach with a reset button before next weeks. It gets tiresome quickly. Alcatraz is exactly that. There`s a few main story bits but they seem rather dull and every time I see a potential conspiracy i remember how much better `Lost` handled it.
-
...without it being a m'f'ing g'damn son-of-bitchin' c*cksucking conspiracy???? Or is tv really right?
-
Seeing her playing another insider after her stint on the Event doesn't help my impression of Awake. And it was easy to see the Finder being stillborn. Jerking it around and then dumping it in Herk's Fri death slot to burn them off doesn't point to a bright future. I would have rather seen them keep Human Target on air, if they wanted a lighter 'TV on while multitasking' type show.
-
Is it some kind of running-gag or has anyone else noticed that the guys never physically put food in their mouths and physically eat their lunches during the scenes at the college where they work. They just pick at it. Never placing it into their mouths. (Yeah, yeah, yeah... I get it, you can't eat and say your lines at the same time but... DAMN! I'm becoming obsessed with it every time a lunch scene pops up!) :-P

...with all of the sentiment expressed here about the conspiracy angle on Awake. As I saw it I was thinking how stupid it was, almost a cliche now, and that I may as well bail.
-
in the Wife-Alive reality two scenes that didn't involve Isaacs' character. Wife talked to the kid about the motorcycle, and Innes had a conversation with shady conspiracy dude. So far I don't think we've seen any non-Isaacs scenes in the Son-Alive reality. Maybe next week. Or maybe not.
-
or treated with something to make it better show up on camera but is either unpleasant to eat or possibly toxic. It could also be to cut down on continuity problems during editing. Easier to cut together multiple shots from different angles if they are just moving the food around their plates rather than eating it. Also, it may be the actors don't want to spend multiple takes eating the same mouthful over and over. Now that you've noticed it you will probably start seeing it everywhere. You might also have noticed scenes on shows and in movies where the actors are all out for a meal but never eat it because for whatever reason someone (or all of them) walks out just as the meal they ordered arrives. I've seen it on Alcatraz a few times. Seemed like it happened on Dallas at least once an episode.
-
...pretty much confirm that's the "real" timeline? She was only seen in the wife version, correct? Awake sunk to 1.6 in the key demographic/overnight ratings, down 20% from the pilot.
-
Has gotten much better since Christmas. It took it a few episodes to find its new legs, and it definitely has a different vibe than the Michael Scott Era, but I'm digging it. Here is hoping for a few more seasons before everyone bails....
-
Hate to see it sidelined. Love that show.

They should have made The Pilot from AWAKE a two-parter on first night. Though they should have called the series "Hunches From Another Reality"!
by wtriker1701
Well, for a cop show it doesn't work; it works only on atmosphere, the main characters (father, mother ans son) AND The Mystery! (AND THE ADS FOR NEXT WEEK'S INSTALLMENT WON'T WORK PROPERLY IF YOU SHOW PRESIDENT TAYLOR AS THE SHRINK IN WARM COLOURS INSTEAD OF THE COLD ONES YOU USE WITHIN THE SERIES, NBC!!!!!!) Emotionally I got caught with AWAKE. And the score surely DOES help a lot! Sadly, I still don't see more than the arc of a mini-sries with the plot. Whatever conspiracy is behind this, it would habe been a cool 8-part-story told... but more? It's in the proverbial can - so, Producers, I implore you to do the story justice and unfold everything within this season. SO you can have DVD/BD sold outs, that justify the lengths you wanna go with the story AND the audience! Not like FLASH FORWARD, THE EVENT. V... and so on, and so on... (Even LOST had it's stinker finale - it's worth for millions of viewers to buy the whole island experience for years to come...)
-
It's going to get cancelled and thus never meet it's full potential, but it's a damn fine show and fun to watch.
-
I had a couple of bosses like her. Who were just friendly to grease the wheels and keep you from quitting. But you don't want to hang with her after work because in the end she's more boss than person.
-
Loved the guys night in on Big Bang and how Bernadette came along and Amy got all angry at Sheldon and then Raj blew up about it all. Person of Interest was excelent again with them dealing with the baby and once again we got to see the big bad. Best scene was the baby finding the tear gas grenade. Loved the Jim and Dwight fight in the hallway while Jim was trying to stop Dwight from getting fired. Also Tooby and Darryl trying to compete over Kevin to get him to buy their cookies was hilarious. Plus the Andy/Erin moments were touching, it we funny when Erin was sorting the old ladys medication, supprised shes not dead. Awake had some great moments also with the boys bike and him getting through to him. I love how pieces of the big coverup are starting to leak into the cases.
-
Mine had the guy living two completely different lives. But as you went on you saw people bleeding from one life into another, then the guy(s) realize they exist somewhere in the other's universe but when they go and confront their other self, each other self doesn't recognize the other. AND NO SHADOWY CONSPIRACY! I wonder what the BBC would have done with this series.
-
We did see a scene where the son and his friend were working on the motorcycle talking about Coachella and then the girlfriend walks over. That being said, I think this show is heading towards territory previously explored by Liam Neeson in Unknown. I think the conspiracy involves his wife, although I don't think she is a willing or knowing participant. I think we will see that Issacs had some dirt on the department higher ups and Innes orchistrated some cover up in which they had to wipe his memory. In order to get to him, they made the crash happen and did their business. I think the son was collateral damage. The wife survived the crash. Also, the tall guy was 6'11". Wasn't that also the address and the parking spot number in the pilot?
-
I'm wondering if this turns out to be a 9-11 conspiracy coverup.
-
Seriously, I invested so much time in watching every episode. To cancel it with so many unresolved stories is irresponsible. Why not make a 2 hr TV movie to wrap things up? C'mon ABC, none of your other shows are worth Diana's fake skin.
-
(even though I saw it only yesterday). I too noticed the numbers 611 being used again last night. Could be his subconscious trying to tell him something about 9/11. Or maybe it's 9-1-1. It could be a telephone area code. I checked, it's not an assigned area code, it is "Reserved for special applications", whatever that might mean. Wikipedia has two important events happening in the year 611: 1) It was the year of the Birth of Eudoxia Epiphania, the only daughter of the Byzantine Emperor Heraclius and his first wife Eudokia. She was betrothed to a Turkish ruler in an alliance pact but he died before they could be wed. 2) It was the year Ceolwulf of Wessex, the king of Wessex since 597, died. He ascended to the throne after his brother died; his brother's son was too young at the time to rule. With no heirs of his own, upon his death, the throne passed to his now old-enough nephew (son of the former king) Cynegils. That would also make it the year Cynegils became king of Wessex. Somehow I don't think any of those events will prove to be relevant to this show.
-
Maybe part of the license plate number of a car from the night of the crash? Badge number? ...you of course know that we'll get emotionally involved no matter how crappy the conspiracy and they will cancel it on us. I want my "reveal it on the DVD of the cancelled series" made into law!
-
Hmmmm... Not sure about BoBo's "gay-eating-disorder" theory but Big Jim's multiple guesses seem pretty solid. For what it's worth; they HAVE taken bites when eating at the apartment but I have yet to see them physically place food in their mouths while at the college cafeteria. It continues to vex me...

I still think the real weak link on Awake though is the wife
by Rebel Scumb
Cast wrong, written wrong, acted blandly. I just don't buy at all that this woman is married to Issacs, or that her only kid just died recently. Compare this with Michelle Forbes on The Killing (and I don't even really like that show), but at least she seems like a grieving parent. I can buy Issacs' character being a bit aloof because for him they are both still alive, and he's a hardboiled cop who buries his feelings. But the wife character/actress is just all wrong to me and is sinking the show
-
March 9, 2012, 9:07 p.m. CST
I also noticed there were scenes in both realities without Isaacs...
by Rebel Scumb
Not really sure how that makes any sense.
-
It doesn't. They're being disingenuous with one of the realities.
