The Behind the Scenes Pic of the Day could get you diseases. You’d like that, wouldn’t you?
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes Pic!
Gremlins 2 is kind of awesome you guys. I think it gets overlooked for not repeating that great PG-13 inspiring dark tone of the first film, but the movie is swinging-from-the-rafters nuts.
And it has Dick Miller, Christopher Lee, John Glover, Robert Picardo, Robert Prosky and Gedde Watanabe in one movie! It’s character actor overload! In fact, I’d wager the fact that Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates are overshadowed by the supporting cast (instead of just the Gremlins themselves like in the first movie) is one of the reasons why the movie isn’t held in as high regard as the original.
I love the movie for many of the same reasons I love Temple of Doom. Joe Dante didn’t want to just repeat the first movie and instead wanted to change the tone. He dialed it up lighter and Spielberg dialed it much darker, but the thought behind it is the same.
The pic shows the effects crew working on one of the bigger Gizmo close-up puppets. Apparently Tim Roth worked on effects before becoming an actor. Who knew? (Quint note: That’s not Tim Roth. I was making a joke. Don’t email me nasty letters, please.)
A courtesy bow to the Practical Effects Group for another awesome image. Click to enlargen!

If you have a behind the scenes shot you’d like to submit to this column, you can email me at quint@aintitcool.com.
May tomorrow’s pic be with you.

No Phoebe Cates = No good Movie!
-
The first is definitly one of my favorite movies from that era. I love the way they went dark in the first one and wish they had even gone darker in part 2 although part 2 is a pretty crazy movie.
-
A great albeit overlooked sequel. Definitely worth a look.
-
the movie is what joe dante wanted for the first one. i like the rick baker gremlins better, they look like chuck jones creations.
-
Joe, i dont know what you think you know but hes a good gremlin..he got fed after midnight..its my fault he got fed after midnight.. Larry..stop pouring that water over my dad

My fave bit is when a gremlin gets splashed in the face with acid and immediately pulls out a *Phantom of the Opera* mask.
by justmyluck
The LOONEY TUNES animated intro set the stage for this sequel.
-
I had this taped off of Superchannel (back when Canada had ONE movie channel) and wore the damn thing out. It might have been the same tape I had Tremors on. Yep, Gremlins 2 and Tremors. Good times.
-
Because he was an adorable killing machine.
-
just because every once in a while Daffy Duck would poke his head into the screen and say something like, "Long, isn't it?"
-
Where's Gremlins 3?
-
and you know what I don't miss? Over-abundant use of animatronic-face. When it was done well (Yoda) it was surreal. When it was done bad, like say, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or (I hate to have to say it) this film, it looks off. It just looks like there's a pile-up of unnecessary gears and servos in the characters face and instead of creating an illusion it's distracting. Like I can see the effects guys huddled around with their big remotes, going "Whoa! This'll be cool!" I guess it was cool in the nineties, but I don't miss it.

Or better yet, maybe tomorrow's pic could focus on the late, great Ralph McQuarrie.
by MiggsFacial
-
Gizmo's barely in this movie. What's he have maybe 20-25 minutes, if that, of screen time? But we have Lee and Microwave Marge or whateverthefuck her name is and the awsome Clamp.
-
The person you guys are referring to as "Tim Roth" was a Rick Baker crew member by the name of Steve Sleep who died a few short years after this photos was taken.
-
among the most unbelievably adorable that any human female has ever looked at a given time in the history of mankind. When I was a kid I had this taped off cable and watched huge chunks of it a ridiculous amount of times (for ultimately how silly it is as an actual movie of quality) just sitting there staring, totally and hopelessly in love with Phoebe. She looked soooooooooooo cute in that haircut.
-
I have a maaaaaaaaajor, debilitating phobia of spiders, so that sequence where I guess a gremlin somehow gets genetically spliced with a spider, and you see those long, crooked legs coming around a corner... aaaack!! I could never actually watch (I mean I'm seriously bad with it, like I'm a huge Harry Potter fan and have seen Chamber Of Secrets all the way thru probably at least 10-12 times, yet I've never once actually LOOKED at the scene where Harry and Ron talk to Aragog in the forest lol once you see that, you can't UNsee it)
-
but that is clearly a photo Hans Landa (Hitler Youth days)
-
Yeah, that is Steve Sleap in that picture. He helped design many of the puppets on Pee-Wee's Playhouse. He was also the man inside the Godzilla costume in 'Pee-Wee's Big Adventure!' Sadly, he died of AIDS.

This movie is like a MAD Magazine parody come to life
by Nasty In The Pasty
And I mean that in a complimentary way. Most sequels just rehash the original. This one mercilessly pokes holes in the original film's logic, and movie cliches in general. Plus, it gives Jerry Goldsmith a line ("Hey, what's going on here...did she say there were rats?").
-
= LESS SPIELBERG MORE DANTE Its one of the greatest sequels ever made.
-
I hope.
-
. . . so friggin' different and off the wall but I just accepted what they were doing and went w/ it. Saw it twice in the theater openening weekend. Second time around I acted like I heard a ruckus in the projector room seclnds before they supposedly break the film. I spooked some people for a bit there. And lets not forget the Hulkster!!!
-
I am ajit.
-
This is the one where lady in wheelchair flies out the window and dies. That was funny.
-
Good flick, maybe the writers indulged in too much LSD, but who didn't in those days.
-
I saw it in the theatre, and there was a fake break in the film, followed by silhouettes of the gremlins in the projection booth. When it went to video, the scene was replaced with a fake tape glitch, the screen went to static and snow. Anybody know what the DVD or blu-ray does in this section?
-
In the theatrical version, the Gremlins muck up the projector and start to make shadow puppets, then there's a scene where a theater usher asks Hulk Hogan to do something and he goes nuts and rips off his shirt and the Gremlins start up the film again. In the video version there is a slow break that gets fixed up with an old western movie shootout and the video goes back on again.
-
I mean, flying gremlins? Come on.

Quint, how could you leave out Tony Randall?

I saw it in the theater, the film breaking bit had me fooled 100%. It really is an underrated movie, I loved all the different Gremlins, flying Gremlins, spider Gremlins, just fun stuff.
-
that simply has never gotten its due. I remember getting into a big fight with my best friend at the time (we were both thirteen) over which sequel was better; this or Ghostbusters 2. I was absolutely in the Gremlins 2 camp then, still am now.

Thankfully WB included the alternate VHS interruption as a DVD Easter Egg.

Special features menu : arrow down/across until you highlight a Gremlin hand.
-
For some reason I remember a smoking hot red head, that was like some executive bitch or scientist or something. But she was killer. Not sure if i'm getting movies mixed up or anything.
-
you read my mind, and my childhood thanks you. maybe this is where my ginger fetish came from. along with Annie Potts in GB2. Mmmmmmm...
-
Episode III. I hear it´s darker then the other films. Oh, byt he way, I love both Gremlins movies.

Gremlins II gave me one of the best theatrical gags of my life!
by Orionsangels
I'm sure others here have similar stories seeing this film in the theaters. When the film burns and melts. The entire crowd in our theater let out a big, Awww! We all looked back at the projector and started screaming -What the hell is going on?! Fix it! Then suddenly we see the shadows of the mean Gremlins on the white lit screen breaking the film. People freaked out. I was young and got scared and asked my sister. Are there real Gremlins back there? She said I don't know. This is weird. Then suddenly we see a theater in the movie and Hulk Hogan appears and tells the Gremlins to fix it or else! We then all laughed. I have to admit it was a great gag. One that only works one time, but how awesome! I rarely see that cut of the film. The TV version makes your TV cut off and then you see the shadow of Gremlins in the distorted TV snow. It's not the same and doesn't trick you at all. So bravo to the film makers for putting that gag in the movie. You got us.
-
but this one I got :)
-
I remember sitting in theaters and by the time the climax rolled around, I was in too much pain to laugh anymore. But it was definitely ridiculous, silly, and outrageous. I view it as more of a parody than a sequel. I finally watched it again recently and that 15 year old in me is long gone, I think I leave Gremlins 2 as for-the-kids.
-
That was genius. They completely got us for a minute. I remember sitting in the theater and nearly pissing myself laughing at Hulk Hogan lecturing the Gremlins. What worked so well in this sequel also is it wasn't just Gizmo vs Stripe and his minions. The whole batch had somewhat memorable personalities. That one gremlin that acts like he had too many energy drinks still gets me to this day. Even in their death the gremlins still cracked funny jokes - "What a world! What a world!"
-
When it crashes through the window. Oh crap that was funny.
-
but most of them are completely underrated: Burbs,Inner Space,Gremlins 2,Matinee,etc. What the fuck is going on with the movie audience? do they mysteriously blacklist specific directors and they never watch their movies?
-
Not only underrated; for me it's up there with "Back to the Future" or "Empire Strikes Back" or Raiders or Roger Rabbit - a film I could watch at least once a week without getting bored. There's just so much going on! Thank god there's now a DVD edition (went unpublished for about an eternity) so you can stop the action to look at the details. The scene in the lobby with 100s of gremlins - just watching this scene frame by frame, gremlin by gremlin keeps you entertained fore an hour! And my favourite character is Microwave Marge.
-
Microwave Marge was the best. Spiders - ppphhhttt!!!! That dentist one freaked the fucking SHIT out of me!!! Such a great movie. Just got Innerspace and The Burbs from Amazon so will have to queue this one up too.
-
Me and this other cousin were the only ones laughing in the entire theater. I catched it on TV when I was about 18. I could stand about 10 seconds of it.

What a criminally underused, underrated actor. This is probably his best role along with Scrooged. This guy can do no wrong in my eyes, which is saying something because he's in 'Batman & Robin', though I've never seen it so I wouldn't know. But considering I have the Blu Ray Boxset on order, and I now Know he's in it, I am going to break my vow and watch it for him. That's how much I love you John!

Gremlins 3 and Ghostbusters 3 to be released summer 2014! Bill Murray will do Gremlins 3 just to piss off the ghostbusters cast
by CARTMANEZ
cmon they may as well do Gremlins and GB for 2014 - wtf else is coming out that summer anyway?
-
I liked the first one more, but this is the perfect sequel. Chris Wallas > Rick Baker, IMHO. I like every Joe Dante movie.

When I went to see the first screening of Gremlins 2 in my hometown, that scene had my local theatre's projectionist fooled. Apparently, they thought it really happened. The film "burned", then it stopped altogether, and then the theatre's house lights came on! People were murmuring, getting up out of their seats, walking up the aisles. Then the house lights shut off, Hulk Hogan instantly appeared onscreen, and when he looked at the camera and apologized, the whole audience erupted in cheers and applause. We didn't get to see the 'Gremlins making hand puppets' bit, but the experience was amazing nonetheless. Oh, and the novelized paperback version even does the same thing: The "Brain" Gremlin interrupts one of the chapters and talks about how "the author is tied up at the moment - literally."
-
AND it had Christopher Lee! Who appeared to be having a blast in the movie.
-
gremlins!....gremlins!! you remember in the war....
-
Vavavooooom! Just as hot as Pheobe.
-
The spider-gremlin scene was made even more awesome by fucking Angel of Death playing over it. Slayer, bitches.
-
I think I was in 9th grade when this came out. My girlfriend at the time looked like a young Haviland Morris.
-
I always wondered about the John Wayne sequence. I remember seeing it as a kid when we rented the video. Then afterwards I recorded it off cable and it was Hulk Hogan. From then on I guess I thought I imagined the John Wayne version. Now that I know there WERE two different versions this is going on my MUST BUY list. Who said nothing good ever came from a talkback.

I aslo love how they spoof Phoebe's "Hate the holidays" speech.

There was a guy, who had a beard just like Abe Lincoln. Kinda creepy when you think about it. I wonder what happened between her and old honest Abe.
-
Gremlins 2 is just crazy , renelentlessly entertaining fun from start a finish and its cinema/vhs interuption joke was genius! Its zany spontaneity and cartoonish craziness makes it closer to a live action looney tunes movie than dantes (woefully dissapointing) looney tunes: back in action. Also on the subject of new gremlins film , i dont think a 3rd gremlins film is a bad idea at all. Gremlins 2 proved that adding new characters , a new tone and a new location to the gremlins formula could still result in a great movie so if a gremlins reboot is announced anytime soon, I'd actually be cool with that.

Gremlins 3 would be great! Just make Gizmo turn into a Gremlin this time.
by welcometothepartypal
That's the only way to go. I'd be great! Have him be the first tormented gremlin, you know, conflicted because he was 'good' for so long and these nice humans always took care of him. But now he just want's to cause mayhem, but can't go all the way. Of course he would be the 'leader' gremlin. Sacrifice himself in the end or some bullshit. There, there's you movie. I love it!!!

I flipped on her when I first saw this. Was a huge Phobe Cates fan prior (who wasn't after Fast Times?) but have always had a thing for redheads. And holy shit is she crazy fine and wonderfully REDHEAD in this movie!!! (i dont even care if its her natural color or not!) And yes - when I first saw it I kinda didn't really like it but after multiple re-watches, it's definitely a batshit crazy AND hella-fun movie...it does tend to wipe out any of the threat from the first one but then, if I need tru Gremlin brilliance and threat, I can always pop on 'Twilight Zone the Movie' and watch Miller's/Lithgow's vignette with said utter genius and perfectly realized gremlin (amazing considering the original they were working from on the old show). Plus don't forget the 15 seconds of "Angel of Death" from Slayer right when the shit really starts to hit the fan.... One thing though - the female gremlin from part two was much hotter than the one in part 1. I think the one in part 1 was actually a drag queen and not an actual female. Not 100% sure though. My letters were never responded to.
-
"creature. Can I call you that?" "Mmm Hmmm I saw it again in Narita airport a few years ago.
