Well, At Least The New MIB3 Trailer Has Josh Brolin As Tommy Lee Jones Going For It
The Kidd here...
In a perfect world, MEN IN BLACK 3 would be the lesson studios finally learned about the hazards of shooting a film with an incomplete script that had no ending. But we all know how this is going to shake out:
Familiar title/recognizable sequel + Will Smith = Big box office dollars and another potential sequel
Columbia Pictures released the new trailer for MIB3 this morning (via Yahoo!), and, after watching it twice, I found myself challenged to find anything worthwhile here, except the spot-on Tommy Lee Jones impression Josh Brolin is pulling off as a result of this time travel storyline.
Otherwise, it's a lot of the usual Will Smith playing Will Smith playing his character, in this case Agent J. I'm sure I'm not the only one shaking my head in sadness at J threatening an alien Andy Warhol (played by Bill Hader).
Is this a sequel anyone actually wanted?
MEN IN BLACK III hits theatres on May 25.

This film feels like white noise
-
I think the point of that scene was that Warhol was (tee hee) surprisingly NOT an alien but a member of MIB like K & J (or at least a human).
-
I understand how if you're not interested in another MIB movie how this could fall on deaf ears. As someone who felt the first was classic and the second a misfire this one looks like it has great potential and looks like a MIB movie should. Even made me laugh a few times.

At least someone is TRYING to make an original-ish si-fi adventure flick these days. MIB is still a great concept. Glad to seem them exploiting it without rebooting or recasting.
-
I mean, it is what it is. The first one was goofy. The second one was goofy. Why shouldn't this be goofy? It's just a dumb fun movie that you can watch with the non-film people. And I like Josh Brolin, and he looks great in this trailer. He might make this movie worthwhile. You know, drink some beer and order some pizza and watch a stupid movie kinda movie.

BRING IT! but on like a scale of 5 out of 10 for excitement.

Though it might have been a bit watered-down (though I could be wrong - never saw the source comic), the first MIB in 1997 was at least really good entertainment. Even the second one was okay. At least it had some heart. This, though - this reeks of GIMMICK all the way, and the fact that we've heard next to nothing, if anything from director Barry Sonnefeld (pardon potential misspelling) about this - as I've not seen anything - is, to me, discouraging. I remember a time when Will Smith was at least trying to transcend his "pop star with an attitude" image with movies like ALI (even though that might not have worked out as well as hoped-for), but now, it just seems like he's content just cranking out expensive, feature-length commercials of/for himself and his kids. It is unfortunate, to me, because I had hoped he could and would do more. Anyway, besides not seeming to have a cohesive plot, the trailer mentions an alien invasion in this movie, but only towards the very end (of the trailer)! That should be the whole set-up - the whole point. And what's more, I'm a bit disappointed that they seem to be aping off the STAR WARS prequels (with the round motorcycles = droid tech in AOTC) and the feel of the AUSTIN POWERS movies. It also seems as if the real Tommy Lee Jones isn't going to be in this very much, though from an actor's perspective, who could really blame him? Oh, well... nothing you guys couldn't see or figure out for yourselves. I'm done.
-
His presence makes this watchable.
-
Still can't forgive him for slapping around Diane Lane
-
Did you pay attention to the trailer? This movie is going to make big, big box office. The trailer was pretty good, too. Why the negativity?

MIB2 was the first PG-13 movie I ever saw in theaters. It sparked my love for pugs and ultimately for sci-fi beyond Star Wars. This actually looks pretty cool. I'll probably enjoy it.

by slone13
Actually, it looks like you are. And really, what's so sad about it anyway? Don't be so fucking dramatic. And while we're picking nits, as someone above already noted, Andy Warhol isn't an alien at all.
-
I like the music. Especially the MIB theme. And i think the movie looks good
-
Jesus, people on these boards need to up their valium.
-
I have never been a fan of this film franchise. You can't say they'll ruin it with an unfinished script in the third movie when the first two also sucked. I want a Men in Black reboot. Not a buddy cop movie with aliens, but a scary "The aliens are evil, but the men who hide their existence are worse" story.
-
Instead of the memory erasing flash stick, they just punch people in the face.
-
Whats wrong with j threatening him? His art sucks, and i am pretty sure he is an Agent not an Alien.
-
Not bad, not intriguing...just more MIB. If that's what you want, I'm sure it'll be entertaining. For me...I think I had my fill at one.

That's gotta hurt!

These movies are entertaining as hell. Laid back, who cares, funny, and not overlong (I'm looking at you, the nine-hour chase scene called Lord of the Rings.) I liked both of the movies in the franchise so far and this looks like they got the best parts (the interaction between J and K) right again. Will miss Rip Torn ("Bring a sponge") but I'll be there with popcorn. And no, I don't care about how many goddamn minor Marvel superheroes can be stuffed into that other tentpole movie, I'd rather see this one.
-
Horrid... When is Will Smith gonna make a movie where he's not all loud and yucking it up?

Trying so hard to be cool, and miserably failing. It's just a popcorn flick dude, cheer up.

Badly made sequels are unfortunate, but this seems to be a case where those involved have their heart in the right place - from what I'm seeing here, it FEELS like a MIB movie. Which is what we wanted. The problem would arise if it felt like Star Gate or something when we were expecting MIB. I liked the first two - more so the first one, but MIB II wasn't the worst thing ever put to film, either. Look - MIB was never going to be the favorite at the Oscars (pretentious crap that those awards are, anyway). It's no secret that these were never A movies, were never intended to be, and will never be - these are comedies, first and foremost. They do have interesting (albeit, not new to theoriticians) takes on the universe and space/time. Audiences want to forget their daily lives for 2 hours and have a good time. This looks quite capable of accomplishing that job. I don't know at what point people starting turning their noses up and treating film reviews as if it were some wine tasting event (extend the pinky), but seriously - if a movie entertains at all, it serves a purpose.

AICN Staff Member Totally Misjudges TBers Reaction Shocker!
by Pawprint
That trailer looked like really good fun at LEAST on a par with MiB, yet 'Billy the Kid' plays the jaded, unimpressed geek commentator on us all, totally misjudging the reaction. This site tries to force-feed us 'John Carter' until we are so tired of it we'll just choke down the shit sandwich and pretend it was prime burger, yet MiB 3 gets pissed all over based on 2 trailers that look like they captured the clever, fun spirit of the first? Sorry, you lose - I'll make up my own mind despite the unsubtle attempts at poisoning the well.
-
When the news first started coming out about the original Men in Black movie, it was exciting, it was a concept which had not really been given a voice in movies yet. I was completely unfamiliar with the source comics, but the concept seemed to be more 'cool' than 'cheesy/silly'. Of course we all know what we got. Cheesy silliness. Maybe that is just the way the source material was, I don't know. But it just seemed such a disservice to the *concept*, which has just honestly still never been seriously explored. But at least the first one was watchable. The second one, ugh, what a disaster. Only ever saw it once, and have had ZERO desire to ever watch it again. Now this third one is finally on the way, and from the trailer at least, it looks to be much better than #2, and maybe on par with the first one. So we'll see. Hopefully it turns out to be fun and good and not so dreadfully stupid as the previous one was.
-
. . . I STILL haven't seen the second one. I shouldn't bother, should I?
-
I haven't been a fan of the MIB franchise since its inception. I find them to be mindless popcorn movies that weren't at all funny and/or entertaining, and there may not be a more irritating screen actor than sassy Will Smith, when he resorts back to the same shtick that audiences will continue to eat up, regardless of how stale it tastes. Not trying to be negative, just being honest.
-
I have to agree with your assessment. I didn't see anything wrong with the trailer. Made me chuckle a couple of times. Looks like it has a pretty funny and interesting story. Very akin to the first MIB and not some tired rehash. I look forward to checking it out. And yes I do feel like John Carter is being forced down my throat but I'm not buying.
-
Nope. Not unless you have absolutely no other way to grow 90 minutes closer to the end of your life. I would seriously rather watch Highlander 2 than MIB2 again. And that is saying a LOT.
-
Going from the trailer it seems miles better than the second MIB at least! The first was just a homerun because there was such a memmorable villain in it and everything was fresh.
-
I was thinking the same thing about Mr. Garrison's invention. I'm waiting for the scene where Will Smith has to take a giant metallic dildo up the ass to drive the thing.

I actually think it looks pretty good. Original cast, director, producers, Danny Elfman. Fun concept. At least we can assume it will be better than part 2.
-
MIBIII doesn't look half bad to be honest. Based on that trailer, I'd drop 4 bucks for a Blu-ray rental. I didn't like the 2nd one, haven't seen the 1st in ages. But at least it's wants to be fun as opposed to overly dark & serious (Which is the current cliche) I can think of worse things to overreact to. Like how people here think Transformers 3 was actually good...
-
Proves the concept is solid and can be done well andnothing is wrong with it. ANd the show was in 22 minute stories. Just take the first 3 or 4 Alpha plotlines and throw them together and you have an amazing movie. Cept they used some of that "old enemy from back in the day" for the second movie and eh... But whatever. MIB is a solid franchise. 65 great cartoon eps. Movies were never as good, but... they're okay.

So perhaps as someone who 1) Does not like Will Smith 2) Does not enjoy the MIB frachise you probably weren't the best choice to post this "preview" for the upcoming movie. Good grief. Then why bother? I'm all for a getting a wide variety of views on this website, but honestly - most people LOVED the first film and rightfully so : it was a funny, clever and well crafted romp. Talking about it as though it's always been universally panned is just...weird.

How can I get a job as a full time plant on these talkbacks?
by Tikidonkeypunch
I mean seriously, when someone tries to compare the Lord of the Fuckin Rings as lesser than any Men in Black movie, I mean are you for real? Sure they are long. Granted. But if they were 90 min they would be shit and everyone in the geek universe would have complained about the missing stories. (even more so than they already do) MIB was fun. MIB2 was dumb, but had its good parts. This actually looks decent but in no way were these movies as great as some of you think they are. As far as pretentious Oscar movies go, the ones that I did see are light years better and more entertaining than any MIB movie will ever be. So I figure I'm either talking to plants or 13 year old fucktards who don't know shit.

Sounds like the new Star Trek is the next movie to shoot with half a script.

-
Why is this not funny or at least slightly amusing? Is it because of Will Smith? Because part 2 was bad? Or is it because you read somewhere that there were script problems and reshoots? Either way, it's ultimately because you want to be the numero uno dipshit to say "I called it!" if it turns out to be crap. What a bunch of winners. Sometimes I really, really hate this fucking place.
-
So I might (MIGHT) check it out on dvd. But I really hate Smith since his Fresh Prince days are over. Back in the day he was likable and funny... or maybe I just was very young and had no taste. Dunno.
-
90% of you spend literally all of your time talking shit on any and every movie that is previewed here, and accusing the writers of being "paid off" or "sucking up" when they say they're excited for anything... Then, finally, one of the writers comes out and gives a negative opinion on an upcoming film, and you guys react like he just spit on your mother in front of you. Astounding. As far as I'm concerned, this looks mediocre. I liked the first MiB okay, hated the second. Brolin looks like he'll be great (plus, I saw a credit for Jemaine Clement on there, which might be interesting), but not enough to save the whole thing. Come on, "pimp-slap the shiznit out of Andy Warhol"? That's fucking terrible.
-
or maybe not. But Brolin's Tommy Lee Jones is LOL funny.
-
they just need to make it as fun as the original
-
..need to remember that this column written by 'The Kidd' was not a REVIEW. It was simply one person's opinion about a movie trailer of an upcoming movie. I bet you, as much as some people will inevitably disagree with his views - no matter what movie he reviews or what his vies are - the review will be professional. Hopefully so anyway. If not, THEN, and only then, it becomes a problem that would need to be addressed. And I for one am in the camp which believes the first MIB was one of the most over-rated movies ever made, along with 'Home Alone'. But as I said earlier, it was at least 'watchable'. But MIB2 was just terrible, no redeeming virtues at all. So I can understand the lack of enthusiasm for another sequel. However, I am also with the majority here, who seem to see that the trailer does nto actually look too bad. Definitely makes it look better than 2, and possibly better than the first one too. We'll see. But lay off the Kidd until he actually reviews the movie, instead of just weighing in with an honest opinion on the trailer.
-
Time travel again... Will Smith looks old Tommy Lee Jones will be in for what...15 minutes? Aliens and K&J alchimy should be the catch but it seems we will have 6O's decorum ("look the clothes haha!" "look a famous face!") and Will Smith show. Don't feel electric/visually incredible and funny enough.

with disagreeing with you, though no offense. this looks like a damned little bit of fun - mib with current SOTA sfx; time-travel; wise-acreing younger hip partner/old stodgey straight man but in a freaky-friday-almost thing. not that it's going to change the world, but it just looks like a bit of fun. and at least perhaps better than mib2 (which, like ghostbusters 2 in retrospect has "moments" but just doesn't last like the original). "ehhh, but how iz ze mese-en-schene of it, zat eez vhat i vant to know..." eh. it's popcorn, but a fun idea for a series, even if it's still just one for two. shit we could already be on six or eight or ten at the rate they like to do series anymore... be glad they're "pacing it" as is.
-
i have to admit some chuckles in the trailer when they mount (snicker) the "wheelie bikes;" i got some mr. garrison south park episode in mind from that one.

Compared to most of the stuff Hollywood's greenlighting at the moment...
by jasper Stillwell
...this looks like a work of genius. I have to say Brolin's Jones impersonation means I'm 'in' for this one.
-
THIS is the one this 'contributor' has a problem with? It looks really great production value wise, it looks fun, and the Brolin/smith stuff looks like it's going to be really funny. "Is this a sequel anyone actually wanted?" At least one person did...me. This one actually looks great.
-
...was the scene resembling a hilariously devious Army psychological test, when Will Smith sits uncomfortably inside an egg-shaped chair with a flimsy pencil trying to find a flat surface to write on his form. That was pure genius.

There was enough in that trailer to make me want to see this... Tommy Lee Jones, who can do no wrong... Josh Brolin being Tommy Lee Jones. Amazing. Cool looking retro alien invasion. Lines that made me laugh. "How old are you?" "29." "Wow - you've done some city miles." Kidd - I think you showed your hand when you said you don't like the series. Being a htater should not be a default position.
-
In a few seconds, you wont even BE matter.
-
He doesn't have anything else going on
-
I don't understand why Will Smith's character wants to see Andy Warhol assaulted. Is he some sort of reviled person? I think generally people find him kinda clever, right?
-
Was never a fan of MIB2 though, personally i don't get this third movies timing but the trailer certainly don't spoil nothing. Looks like a cracking movie hopefully the best of the bunch.
-
I seem to recall something about him going to the big house. I don't know if they would want him in this even if he was out. Is he?

bothered to look it up, apparently he didn't go to jail after all. That's nice.
-
once again you're way off the mark. looks great.
-
Wish the movies had used one of the storylines from the cartoon. The first MIB had a lot of potential, but fell short because of the simple, straight-forward and predictable story. The MIB world is interesting and fun and it should've longer and more like LOTR.
-
Doesn't look like himself at all
-
Those aliens would be up on facebook in seconds

But I have to admit, it looks better than part II.
-
I'm there day 1 if its decent I will watch again a few times then buy the Bluray. Looks a lot better than most of the junk Hollywood is greenlighting recently all that comicbook crap is so old & overdone now. I know this is based on a comic but its more of a sci-fi actioner than pure comicbook like the superheroes junk. SPI will still be working on the VFX which is probably why its not showing much work in the trailer the usual scheduling issues mean this well not be ready until early May so right now they will be working 24/7 to polish the movie as much as possible. I doubt Spielberg/Amblin would let them release something which was not almost ready he already halted production to get the 2 month script polish done last year which is unheard of nowadays. I think this will be much better than MIB2 but still lacking compared to MIB1 nothing can match that movie it was fresh/original in 1997. I expect this to gross around $200-275m in US alone then if its actually any good another $300-400m internationally as global box office has exploded in recent years. 1st week alone will generate around $250-300m after that its down to repeat business. If the movie is really poor then Will Smith's action career is finally over so expect ID4 sequels to come next as he does not have the range as an actor. Smith & Brolin will carry on regardless as they can & do take decent character roles (Smith is in Spielberg's Lincoln movie!!). I hope Danny Elfman really goes back to the wild music of MIB1 as that alone could make this soar!!
-
Wished I could get my money and time back from 2, but this one looks fun...I could tell from the ads for part 2 that is was terrible, this on at least looks in line with the original. Looking forward to it.

Just think about it. First, The 'author' revealed his hatred for the franchise, which automatically makes the 'article' worthless. Second, he has already made a judgement on the quality of the film. How in the world could he know how good or bad the film may be. He has some insider information about the production and automatically knows the film will suck? What a jackass. Third "Is this a sequel anyone actually wanted?" Yes many people want a sequel that is why the films make hundreds of millions of dollars. Usually the contributors are pretty good. Not this time.

or is it Guy LeDouche?

FACT City on the Edge of Forever gets a pass because of Harlan. Everything else, exxxtra peanuts means more flavor.

And only admits it in a comment? Bad form, BtK. You want to give a trailer a bad review, that's one thing, but you want to try to whack a franchise you don't personally care for without mentioning that's your motive for the bad review ... that's a bit low, isn't it? For me I thought the 2nd movie sucked but the trailer here seems like a return to the excellence of the 1st. My family's bums are on seats for this for sure.

Please, if the Kidd said he thought that was an awesome trailer...
by Sardonic
you'd all be saying how retarded he is and that this looks like shit. The talkbacks have some of the worst mob-mentality I've ever seen, even for the internet.
-
I'm laughing just with Brolin's impersonation.
-
Since when did just being better than the last one become acceptable...? Better than awful is still pretty bad. Plus, isn't that what we were saying about TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON? "It looks better than REVENGE OF THE FALLEN." Look how that turned out.
-
Hi, check out www.deadlyavenger.co.uk for more trailer music !
-
I love the first MIB movie. It's fun without it being dumb down. Classic entertainment in the vain of Catch Me If You Can. The second film was an abortion, but this one looks like they got the tone and a decent premise. Plus it has time travel, that's always a good time.

So *your* standard of quality is "either awful or pretty bad"?
by little_lebowski
Because, you know, the rest of us have "awesome" "great" "good" "just ok" "could've been worse" "meh" and "bad" over "pretty bad" and "awful". We're not saying it looks awesome, just that it beats the shit out of awful.
-
This guy's comments have zero relevance because we now know he has no regard whatsoever for the franchise, period. So we could have a trailer that makes it look as good as the first film and he'd still be like "meh, looks crap". Fuck this guy and his already-made-up mind.

But, really... getting a little pot and kettle there, Billy.
by little_lebowski
You bashing people for liking it on their own personal grading curve, when you obviously HATE it on yours... Retaliatory reaction or not, that's just coming off as petty.
-
you're digging your hole deeper... you missed the point. fans of the first WANT it to be better than the second, which judging by this trailer, it appears to have the potential of being. and that is what we said about dark of the moon, and guess what...it turned out to be widely regarded as the best in the series, and for what it is, a big, dumb, loud, flashy over the top action spectacle, it was pretty damn amazing. i mean come on, that last hour was pretty mind-blowing, and it was a rare example of 3D done right. i know it's expected that the talk backers would eviscerate a new journalist, but seriously harry, where was your screening process on that one...

I've always said Will Smith needs to go against the grain and play a character that does not resemble himself
by Han Cholo
Then... and only then will he have gained respect, especially if he can lose himself in the role, making him virtually unrecognizable to the audience. Will, if you're reading this, I'm CALLING YOU OUT, HOMIE!!! I'm calling you out as an actor and as a man. <p> Take my advice, spend the next few years reading scripts. Take all the time you need, maybe make one of your awful "franchise films" whilst in the process of making even more money than you or your family will EVER need. Find a role in a serious film that really resonates with you, spend another few years, depending on how you feel how good you are as an actor, becoming the character you choose to play. <p> Then proceed to make the ABSOLUTE BEST film in your career. Don't play a pimp, don't play a thug, or any other role previously done by Denzel or Eddie, because we've seen it all. Maybe play a serial killer or someone deeply disturbed, maybe play some corrupt Corporate goon who realizes that making tons of cash that you don't need isn't what really matters in life. <p> Read up on what the current interests are and let that be a guide to your biggest role. Master your craft and prove to me and everyone else that you can actually play a role with gravitas and artistic integrity. Such actors with these credentials are Gary Oldman, Daniel Day Lewis, Meryl Streep, and Marlon Brando. Then, and only then, will you gain respect from the community.

So sue me.

Any more than Clint, Arnold, or John Wayne ever did? To what exact end? If you don't see "range" between Six Degrees of Separation, ID4, I Am Legend, Pursuit of Happyness and Ali, you're not noticing.

Watch is with the sound off - you'll see how bad an actor Smith is

No country for old alien

After watching the trailer, I was all ready to post a big angry "What's the matter with you people? This actually looks FUN, stop whining about everything", etc. post, fully expecting the usual talkback bitchfest. Then it turns out everyone else already said the same thing and the only person who's whining is the dude who posted the video in the first place. I am quite amused.

Billy The Kid is a Racist who hates Will Smith for being Will Smith.
by UltraTron
He also hates Transformers 3 which is the greatest robot spectacle ever devised for human consumption. Hating Transformers 3 is to shit down the throat of Robby the Robot, C3P0, R2, Robocop and Ironman. If you don't like transformers 3 then you cannot tell me you like those other robots and your nerd card is forfeit.
-
He will post something in a couple of days that says this is what him and his dad consider fun. It's all a little fun between him and his dad. Instead of Brian Cox, now all we have to say is MiB3. Thanks
-
I wouldn't get too discouraged by any of them. Most of them have been horrible at selling the movie in question, JOHN CARTER being a bit of a current poster boy of terrible marketing.

I wouldn't go as far to call someone racist just because they don't like Will Smith
by Wcwlkr
I mean I liked the trailer. I loved the first MIB thought the 2nd one was meh but not horrendous. Look forward to this one. And I like Will Smith. I just think you have to call someone racist just because they don't like Will Smith. I mean clearly The Kid wouldn't like the trailer regardless I think clearly because he doesn't like Will Smith. But I won't call the guy a racist.

And that was to make a family film

MIB3? Equals safe film for Smith.

am i the only one here who enjoyed the sequel better?
by DanielnocharismaCraig
The second one just seemed more tongue in cheek with a better sense of humor.
-
Probably my favorite iteration of the franchise. Had a great opening theme, too.
-
Also, the cartoon theme rocks. HD youtube version: http://tinyurl.com/6r7nbz6

I looked it up and MIB actually first appeared in AIRCEL comics, which was then bought by Malibu, which was then bought by Marvel. Here's the very first MIB comic cover: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/65/MIBseries1.jpg

But it will probably be in the low 20s. I'll be happy if it's not.
