PRINCESS MONONOKE DVD
Yes indeed, another of Hayao Miyazaki's masterpieces, Mononoke Hime, aka Princess Mononoke is coming to DVD here in the US, on June 13th. Distributed by Disney (Miramax), this disc will thankfully have both English and Japanese audio tracks. It'll be in Anamorphic Widescreen, using dual layers, and recorded in Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround.
Go check out www.nausicaa.net for the poop on the DVD release of this most excellent film.
Maybe they could whip-up a super badass version with all kinds of freaky artwork around it in a super deluxe box and such? Pretty please? With a little Kodama included? Then all we'll need are DVD versions of Porco Rosso, Kiki, Laputa, Totoro, and Nausicaa...get to work, Miramax!

This would be the first Miyazaki film released on DVD in America, yes? Awesome. "Kiki" and "Totoro" need the DVD treatment too, and "Laputa" whenever the hell they get around to releasing it. I am kinda upset that there won't be an option to hear the original Japanese audio. DVD is an ideal format to please dub and subtitle fans alike, and it's a shame that a few minor scene cuts might prevent this. I gotta say, Jada Pinkett really got on my nerves with her sass-talkin'. Generally excellent news though.

I am a fan of Gaiman from what little of his work I have seen, but it has been a while since I saw Mononoke and it did not receive much press down here in Houston. I would like to know what his input and import on the movie was.
-
I really, really hope your info is right! If one Miyazaki flick can be dubbed and subtitled, then they ALL can! And dammit, the world would be a better place.
-
Now this is the best news I've heard on this site ever! (well.... pretty close) I'm totally THRILLED with Miramax and parent company (The Mouse) actually giving us this amazing masterpiece on the DVD format. YEEE HAH! Shout it to the rafters and let there be a joyous tumult! Now I want to lick my boogers in happiness, just like Harry! >^.^<

I would be very *very* surprised if Disney does manage to produce a good DVD of MONONOKE HIME including both spoken languages and subs - or any definitive "Collector's Edition To End All Collector's Editions". I mean, get real, folks! Let's not forget who we're dealing with here.
-
i'm looking foward to this DVD. it came out last october and i never saw it cuz since it was only released in a few theatres. i wish Disney would pump it up with some extras instead of charging us $30+ for just the movie. thank god Criterion releseased Rushmore on DVD before i bought the Disney version.

How come there aren't any Dolby or DTS 5.1 audio tracks? 2 channel surround sound just isn't going to work for me.
-
Man, I hope this is just a typo. There's really no excuse for not releasing it in Dolby Digital 5.1 like the theatrical release. A 5.1 master already exists for the Japanese language version. I know because I've had the Japanese laserdisc version of Mononoke Hime for over a year, and it has a killer 5.1 soundtrack that makes excellent use of the split surrounds and low-frequency effects channels. Even the quiet forest scenes benefit from the atmospheric sounds surrounding you. Leave it to Disney/Miramax to finally get the video right (anamorphic enhancement) only to screw up the audio. If this is really the case, I'll stick with the LD until they get it right.

Being new to the DVD world, I'm curious about the difference between subtitles and closed captions. Everything I've read says the Mononoke DVD will feature English and Japanese tracks and will offer English Closed Captions. Does that just mean subtitles in the usual sense, or that ugly white on black text commonly broadcast for the hearing impaired? Is "closed captioned" just DVD lingo for "subtitled," or is the difference what I think it is? And if Mononoke is subtitled on DVD, will the subtitles reflect a more literal translation, or will it be a reproduction of the Gainman version? Anyone out there know anything for sure?
-
I heard Gaiman talk about his role in "Mononoke" at the Austin Film Festival, and it sounds like he was basically a translator. He made it sound like he simply created English dialogue to dump over the original Japanese while mirroring what was really said so it matched the action.

First, I love Ghibli films and want every single film of theirs on DVD. Now, what I am really talking back about is Whisper of the Heart. Please, HARRY answer. Have you seen the film? I consider it my favorite Ghibli film, and the one made right before Mononoke. Miyazaki only directed a tiny bit, but I think it is an amazing picture. See it!! Praise it!! What about you Moriarty? Have you seen it? Anyone? This film must be championed. Every Ghibli film should be in theaters--imagine if Grave of the Fireflies was shown. See Whisper of the Heart. Discuss it. Let Disney know we want it and we want it in theaters.
-
What's the gist of the film, Fuzzyhobbit? I haven't heard of it. Giant robots right? Post apocalyptic vampires then? Something with tentacles? Jus' kiddin' - sounds to be a drama, yes? Maybe an anothology of some sort, if Miyazaki only directed part of it? I've seen most of Miyazaki's flicks, but no other Studio Ghibli movies.

Alright, someone who appreciates my second favorite Ghibli film(the first being Laputa). For the guy asking about the plot, there's really nothing fantastic about it. It's set in a modern day, modern suburban Tokyo devlopment(it's supposed to be the devopment in Pom Poko). I think the lack of fantasy elements is why a lot of people overlook the film. Anyway, there's this 14 year old girl who dreams of writing. She meets a boy around the same age who is studying to become a violin maker. She's impressed by his determination which prompts her to start working hard at her own goals. It's a simple story but the execution was great and I think it gives a very pragmatic message, oppossed to these huge grand ideas in the other Ghibli films. That may be why it seems to hit closer to home. Miyazaki only directed the few scenes in the movie where we see the story that the girl writes. Everything else was directed by a newer animator. If you like Kiki's Delivery Service(or any good movie), I would suggest this one, especially if you want to hear a Japanese rendition of "Country Road." Take care of yourselves... and each other. :(

Ain't It Cool News is losing it. The "Mononoke" DVD story has been around for weeks. It broke on dvdfile.com and has been on all the anime sites (e.g., animeondvd.com, animenewsservice.com, etc.).
-
This is a romantic movie directed by Isao Takahata, I believe. Once I sat down and listed the ten best anime of the 90's and this instantly came to mind. For anyone with imagination and an ope mind, I definitely recommend it.
-
I doubt the US DVD of Princess Mononoke is gonna include any special features. There has been no anouncement of any DVD release of Ghibri animes in Japan. With Sony's PS2 that plays DVD-Video as well selling enormously, and the financial disputes between the studios and the Japanese counterparts of WGA settling now, I think it'll be possible to see in a couple of years all his works on DVD with great additional materials made under Miyazaki's supervision. And, yes. WHISPER OF THE HEART is one of the best animes I've ever seen. Better than MONONOKE perhaps. But at least, Ghibri's GRAVES OF THE FIREFLIES is available on DVD, though the disc's quality is just mediocre.
-
I forgot to mention about YAMADAS... TONARI NO YAMADA KUN/MY NEIGHBOR THE YAMADAS is Miyazaki's last pic so far and despite the highly popular cartoon characters, supposedly heartwarming story and some experimental techniques that cost the studio enormously (for the Japanese standard) it simply nosedived at the box office.
-
This film was directed by the late Yoshifumi Kondo. It was his first and only directoral effort. Isao Takahata was not the director, and neither was Hayao Miyazaki, although it is true that he contributed significantly to the project (he wrote the screenplay, was the producer, and did the storyboarding).
-
So that's the director's name. I knew it wasn't Miyazaki, and half-remembered Takahata. Oh well, my bad. Still a great piece. Shame about his passing though.
-
Yeah! WHISPER OF THE HEART is really good, not as good as MONONOKE, but good. It's kind of leisurely paced, so some anime fans might not like it, but the animation is really nice and the characters and music are cool. I think (could be wrong) even though Miyazaki didn't direct all of it, he may have directed the fantasy sequence towards the end. Any NAUSICAA news?
-
Even though it is old news, I'm glad to say that it's awesome that Princess Mononoke will come out in both languages. That will please my Japanese roommate who only had it on video. I really want to see Laputa in English, I tried to watch it in Japanese, but it was kind of difficult to understand, considering I am just beginning to learn it!! I can tell it looks really good though and Mononoke just rocked.
'Till then, jaane. -
i am talking about the loss of your grandmother. i hope u are dealing with it ok.baff

I finally caved in and bought a DVD player last week, and now I'm addicted to it. I've already spent way more than I really should on movies...but by gum it's just so freaking awesome. Now I'm getting antsy waiting for Princess Mononoke, Fight Club, and the Star Wars trilogy. Also, someone was posting about NetFlix.com a couple of weeks ago, and I think I'm going to try their offer. They have this rental by mail deal where you pay a flat $20 a month, and can rent as many DVDs as you want (you can only have 4 out at time though), and the shipping and return postage is included in your membership!!! I don't see how they can make any money off of this, but dammit, I'm all for it. Oh, and the first month is free....damn this is starting to sound like a fucking commercial for them.....Honestly, though check it out. Oh, and now I can't wait to try DVD porn, with multiple angles....oh yes.....porn....hhhmmmmmmmm
-
Now I learn that Dolby Digital 2.0 will suck if it's on the Mononoke DVD...but anyway, I'm not sure whether that aspect of the information is accurate. At www.nausicaa.net (the ULTIMATE Ghibli website), a message DIRECT from Miramax AND info from Image Entertainment's catalog (apparantely a reliable source), together have NO listing of Dolby Digital 2.0 as the sound. In fact, there is no listing at all. However, the Anamorphic and DUB/SUB aspect is true (which is GOOD!). I hope that Dolby Digital 2.0 sound is false information or a misreport, but if it's true then this will be the last time I EVER trust Miramax to make a better DVD than its parent company.
-
I wonder if a subtitled version would be better than some of the lame voice talent? Billy Bob Thorton was alight but most of it didn't fit.
Mini Driver was just sqweekey sounding and annoying. But YES, the animation is awesom, well worth owning. So flame away,
but for me that is what hurt the movie. --Syd -
Knowing Disney they'll re-release the same film under various different headings. i.e. The Gold Collection, Miramax Masterpiece, Miramax Classic.
I'm still wondering which one of the 5 different copies of Pinocchio I should buy.
