The Avengers Get Assembled In Photoshop For Their New One Sheet
The Kidd here...
Marvel Studios has managed to assemble a new poster for THE AVENGERS, in advance of the debut of a new trailer, and, while it's pretty cool to be able to see Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, The Hulk, Nick Fury, Black Widow and Hawkeye all together, it's a little disappointing that Marvel couldn't actually get them in one place at the same time to shoot something like this, instead relying on the crutch of Photoshop that makes posters for films such as this feel incredibly less epic than they really should be.

For something as big budget as THE AVENGERS, you'd think a little more care would be put into smoothing out the edges, so we can't see exactly where they were cropped from their previous placement. Plus, it's a little bit of a cheat that we get Robert Downey Jr. minus the helmet, because the Iron Man suit doesn't entirely make Iron Man.
Remember back when studios actually put some emphasis on the promotional material, doing their best to make it look as cool as possible...? Yeah, those were the days.
We've been hearing good things coming from those who have laid eyes upon THE AVENGERS, and perhaps the excitement will be ratcheted up once the new trailer drops, but, for now, the new poster leaves plenty to be desired.
Did they not properly read the instructions for the assembly required here?

Several of the images from the poster are from previously seen sources, scale and lighting are a total mess, and the characters' focus is all over the place.

Given those issues, plus the fact that everyone's feet are hidden leads me to believe this mess was crafted by none other than Rob Liefeld.

by Stereotypical Evil Archer
Looks like several marketing people are losing their jobs, between this and John Carter, bye bye Disney marketing department! It's just terrible and unprofessional.
-
Absolutely terrible. They're all staring at something different, which wouldn't be -terrible- if it wasn't for the fact that they're all LIT differently. And since you can't see Caps feet, he looks like a forty foot tall giant. Oh wait, so does the Hulk. The art of the movie poster is dead.
-
More in line with what he did with Captain America and his more recent Zemeckis films (more melodic) then the crap he did for action films like G.I. Joe and A-Team.
-
Under pits.
-
Did no one notice that Cap and Hulk look fifty feet tall? Or that the lighting is different on every character? They can spend 200 million on the movie but can't put together enough scratch to use one photo set for all the actors? JESUS CHRIST.

average moviegoers into the theater, not people who are pre-sold on the picture like most in AICN TalkBack. Plus money is one thing but getting all those actors in the same room at the same time has got to be pretty hard, if the movie is in post they've almost all scattered, there are schedules to consider and a limited time to get this done to meet distribution and promotional schedule requirements. Anyone who has worked a project any harder than tying their own shoes understands this. I'm not a plant or connected with the picture in any way, just making some commonsense points. Plus Jettl93 wrote this so you should be nicer.

That is a horrible poster. They all look like they're being lit with different light sources and their sizes in relation to each other in this scene don't match up. It's like that awful poster for FAST FIVE.

by Cymbol
Know your source material and cater to the fans, not top billing. Sheesh. Captain goes in front and everyone should be in full on costume. Everybody and their freakin' brother knows who is in the Iron Man suit. You think people are going to see the full Iron Man suit and wonder who's playing Iron Man? Surprised they didn't have Ruffolo's regular face on the Hulk's body!
-
You can't always totally blame the graphic designer(s)... sometimes they only have limited images of the actors to work with. It's the various ways the actors are lit that helps ruin posters like this. (And bad pshop skills, too.) ScarJo in particular looks "dropped in." And Cap should be larger/more prominent! He's the heart and soul of the Avengers I love. Having said all that: It makes complete sense that they forefront Stark/Downey in the marketing (the most popular of the characters by far), and this poster is far better than other pshopped monstrosities like the X-Men First Class and Fast Five one-sheets. And the trailer looks encouraging (and I say that as a non-Joss Whedon fan).
-
...other than it being photoshop blue and orange tint heaven. Is that it already establishes a pecking order. The point of the avengers is that it's multiple franchises coming together to form a superteam, not one team with a group of actors with iron man as the leader because hey it's RDJ he must be the focus of all marketing material. This shows they are more of a squad with Iron man as a leader, rather than a major supergroup, it may be a nitpick but it's not the right message to send to viewers and artistically not what an avengers poster should look like. That's why i like justice league posters, they always put superman front and center, but they make sure the trinity always stands level to each other.
-
Seems a little odd since he didn't have a movie, BUT he also doesn't make it on the poster himself so.
-
In the trailer he clearly has the triangle one one, and this poster he has the circular one on again.. Is that a goof up?
-

It's a perfectly appropriate poster for a comic book movie. And the
by Brian Hopper
work is pretty pro. On a graphic design level, this is a much better poster than you guys are giving it credit for. Far better than similar posters from the last year or two. Most importantly, it sells the movie pretty well.
-
Do you think it's in Downey Jr's contract that his face be that huge in the promotional material?
-
The problem isn't Photoshop, it's the decisions being made within Photoshop. Or really, even before it GETS to Photoshop. They should be custom shot for this poster, using consistent light sources. They should placed in a way that the characters don't appear to be 50 feet tall. That's a composition issue, not a PS issue. Art 101. Characters shouldn't be rotated to fit into the image, they should be posed that way to being with. Seriously, this isn't an issue of a guy knowing how to work layers in Photoshop. Many people know how to do that. These are very basic art principles NOT tech issues.
-
Did Liefeld pencil this thing?

-

I was just imagining how cool it would be if Jack Kirby was still
by Brian Hopper
alive and they commissioned him to do a one-sheet for this movie, drawn in his style with his riffs on these actors' faces. The resulting poster would be the most awesome thing ever! Or... the more I think about it, maybe it would be a total disaster. Something fanboys would praise endlessly in talkbacks like this, but which would be a curiosity at best to the broader public. My point: This is a HUGE international movie. The poster has to help sell the movie to tens of millions of people. And that means forefronting movie stars and leaning toward graphic design that favors real images of actors over drawings or abstractions. When you add it all up, that's how you end up with posters like this. Fanboys who think movie posters would be better if they all looked like Mondo's startlingly overrated work have their heads up their butts.
-
And I'll make a better poster than this. To suggest anyone with an opinion other than "I love it!!!" make one themselves is, well, fucking retarded.

stiguy, PS is NOT that difficult if you use it every day, and one would assume whomever did this poster ...
by Vince Ricardo
... is more than familiar with PS. Personally, I have no problem with the light sources. They're in the middle of a street in New York, with multiple explosions goin' off around them. There ARE going to be multiple light sources there. No, the MAIN problem is, as many people have pointed out, that both Cap and The Hulk are WAY too large, considering their positions in the shot. Cap is clearly behind Nick Mother F*****g Fury, and appears that he's at least 4 feet taller than him. The Hulk, judging by that tire near his foot, is at least 15-20 feet tall. THAT is the real problem I have with this poster. Well, I also have a problem with the fact that both Hawkeye and the Black Widow are in it, but that's not the poster artist's fault. I've said it before, if you have a menace that The Hulk, Thor, Iron Man and (even) Captain America cannot defeat, there's no way that the Black Widow or Hawkeye are gonna be worth a hill of beans in that fight, but I guarantee the Black Widow will be the savior of the group in at least one situation, if not the main battle. Sigh.

I know of what I speak. I've used it professionally for 16 years. I've seen the best and the worst of it. I've seen subtle uses and crazily ambitious uses. In the end, the world is not one iota better for the existence or use of Photoshop. It's a neato tool that you can do neato things with, that does no real good for anyone or anything. In the end, I think all such graphic design tools do is dramatically increase the number of defensive poseur assholes with self-important soul patches and thick-rimmed glasses who clutter our visual world with branded gimmickry. Beyond a limited, conservative degree, graphic design in its pervasive implemetation has begun to be unhelpful.

No one is saying layers weren't composed correctly, or even that they didn't blend the elements well into the scene. They're not complaining about "Photoshop" issues, they're complaining about ART issues. Simple concepts of composition, staging, lighting... these things have NOTHING to do with Photoshop. If this was done in some other program, or even hand painted, the complaints would be exactly the same because we're dealing with basic art principles. I could give a shit if "Photoshop is hard." That's not why this poster sucks.

Urgh. Marketing departments can't even get THIS right?
by dr_buggerlugs
They're happy to stick their oar into the creative process and suggest how to make a film 'marketable' but ask them to actually market a total no-brainer like this and this is what we get? A decent group photo would have been awesome but would it have killed someone to actually create a bit of consistency of design & vision in this poster rather than slapping a few jpegs together against a generic exploding city background template? (Interestingly Disney got rid of their marketing head not long back- probably down to the piss poor job done on this and John Carter) But it just annoys me that Marvel plough millions and millions into these things and yet they can't get the one-sheet, probably one of the most important linchpins of any campaign right? If your job is to create the one-sheet for a film like this, a superhero team up and potentially the final word on a whole genre, you'd like to think you'd be pushing for iconic and epic. Instead we get photoshopped Iron Man and his somewhat amazing friends.
-
Sorry but this democratization of art may be nice for bums who otherwise can't draw or use a camera, but it's shit for all of us who have to look at these rushed amatuer looking travesties.
-
Been doing graphics for 15 years. Send Donnelly your Photoshop files and I'll do the thing for free. What the hell... I can't be worse than this!
-
Yep I get it. Shot composition, got it. I completely understand your point and you are 100% correct. But.... the fact remains that several talkbackers are bashing the PS work on this poster. Are you even reading the comments? And yep I get that the size of Hulk and Cap compared to the others is, well, a little off. Heres my point, and final thought. YOU ALL ARE FUCKING NITPICKING!!!!!! Jesus christ give it a rest you fucking faggy dorks! Bottom line, it gets the job done. And the artist that put this together did a fine job. Again, lets celebrate that were actually getting an Avengers movie, rather than bashing every poster that these studios release. I still wanna see you people do better, instead of calling me out on this site
-
Yes Yes and..... YES!
-
...I think everyone forgets that sometimes no matter how skilled the artist is, if the source material sucks, the end product will suck. Garbage in, garbage out as they say. I doubt any of the actors were in the same room for the photos. That alone would help. Plus, as a graphic artist, I can tell you that some times you can make a good design, only to have someone higher on the food chain make terrible changes. What can you do? They pay you, you do what they say.

Stick RDJ front and center on the poster and take off the Ironman Mask so nobody mistakes it is him. If thats how the marketing fucks think will sell the movie fine--as long as the plot isn't all RDJ and his "sidekicks".

First Prometheus Viral Campaign Video...No Big Deal
by Raskolnikov_was_framed

So true. I cut my teeth on photo retouching back when I started, getting into compositing and true image creation as time went on. This looks like they had some canned poses from other pieces and did the usual "drop this onto this background, shuffle them around so they work in it, etc." Bad source material can't always be smashed in and cleaned up.
-
It's not Photoshop at fault here as others have mentioned - it's the cheesepuff using it. Jeeze - just the lighting alone is a HUGE mess - forget perspective and image continuity... I'm thinking it's fan-made as well - the only thing it doesn't have or isn't overtly is the usual "giant floating head" thing we usually see with crappy promo material (although, thankfully, that's usually for dvd covers and not posters). But why blame Photoshop? Prior to Photoshop, I don't think any shitty art was ever blamed on the medium in which it was created. Except for actual shitty art..as in art made with shit or something akin to shit?
-
I keep hoping that one comic book movie will release a "poster" drawn and colored by comic book artists! Even if it was an online only ad or as a teaser. They had already been drawing Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury in "The Ultimates" way before there was even an Iron Man movie, so they can draw actor likenesses... But I think the studios think the public is stupid and would just think the movie is a cartoon. --- Also, I would rather see a poster (photoshopped, painted or whatever) with all the superheros in FULL COSTUME rather than see the actor's faces. *Sigh*
-
i have a really bad feeling about this. the costumes looks ridiculous and the actors knows it, you can see it in their eyes. the budget is not big enough will all these actors that you have to pay. the marvel universe in recent films looks like a tv show ( and game of thrones looks like a movie). zero visual identity. joss whedon is a tv director with a tv style of direction ( even in serenity) he is good with actors and he is a good screenwriter i'll give him that. i think if we are lucky it will be average like thor or captain america
-

@banned_of_brothers, you're not getting my point about Photoshop.
by kevred
I'm not blaming the tool for some individual's bad result. I'm not saying that because something bad came from it, it's bad. I'm saying that the tool *only* produces mediocrity. That it fundamentally does not and cannot produce meaningfully good works of art. You talk about "greatness" and "masterpieces". Well, name one thing that has ever come out of PS in its entire history that can be called a "masterpiece" by any serious person. There isn't anything. Photoshop, at its absolute peak of perfection, does not contribute one bit of true artistry to the world. It's only possible use is to create pretty, empty things - or rather, simulations of pretty things - or to deceive or fake. It's my belief that everyone using it who believes otherwise is fooling themselves. One can make a good living off of Photoshop. Doesn't mean it does anyone any good, or creates anything of lasting value.

@darth macchio - 'Prior to Photoshop, I don't think any shitty art was ever blamed on the medium in which it was created'
by kevred
That's a very important, and meaningful, distinction. There's a good reason PS is blamed when non-digital media are not, and if we're honest I think most of us can understand why.

It feels very plastic. There seems to be a huge battle taking place, but most of them look like their on break.
by The Reluctant Austinite
None of the characters seem to be on the same page about what's going on, and the biggest factor that will make this film work is the idea that these characters need to be united in purpose in the same reality at the same time. This, clearly, is not a reflection on the film itself, but a choice on the marketing department not entirely different than what has happened with "John Carter." This staged, frozen action shot looks more like the packaging of the line of action figures or the Taco Bell tie-in for fast food premiums than the theatrical poster for a major film.

-
Or possibly even a fake? Iron Man is definitely wearing his new triangular emblem armor in every shot in the trailer. Why would he go back to the old? And yes, this poster is very poorly done. Captain America should not be the same size as The Hulk. Hell, even the Hulk shouldn't be that big, standing where he is in the background. Photoshop has nothing to do with it. The designer has failed Perspective 101, and anyone who defends this poster is a complete fool. Sorry, but that's a fact. Feel free to argue with me, I'll just prove you wrong.

Dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb. Seriously, not to beat a dead horse, but damn. Lighting/perspective/artistry issues aside, there's shit goin down left, right and center, they're apparently in the middle of a battle of epic proportions, and their facial expressions would lead you to believe they're taking a leisurely stroll thru the park. Come on Marvel. This isn't even half-assed. It's maaaybe one eigth-assed. You should be embarrassed as all hell for even putting this out there. I'm embarrassed for you... No poster at all would have been better than this.

by where_are_quints_hobbit_set_reports
As others have said, the fact he's just chillin' at 45 degrees really brings home the poster's overall quality. He looks like Jeff Daniels in the "Dumb & Dumber" poster, or a character from a Bollywood comedy DVD cover, just sort of wackily popping into the frame at an odd angle. "Ayup! I brung my bow and arrorrs!!!"
-

I declare myself the biggest Marvel Zombie on this site, and even I cringe looking at that thing. I was SURE it was fan-made until it popped up on Marvel's official page. It's awful on every level imaginable. I guess we should be glad that the Hulk doesn't have Ruffalo's unmasked head, so there's that... Still, I'll be there for the midnight opening, just as I was for every other Marvel movie so far. I just hope it inspires me to see it multiple times, like IRON MAN, THOR, and CAPTAIN AMERICA did, and doesn't underwhelm, like INCREDIBLE HULK and IRON MAN 2 did. Hoping for the former, despite this cluster-F of a poster!
-
how come they don't just get the cast together and take some professional photos while in costume on set specifically with the movie posters in mind and planned out? Afterward they could tweak those photos and finalize them all they want in photoshop as opposed to just jumping straight to photoshop and building everything from the ground up with a 1000 different and random elements. I feel like when i look at this it's very pieced together and not as coherent as it could be. It's not terrible though.....just as most say - very very obviously photoshopped.

I know he has two armors, but I haven't seen any shots of him wearing the other armor in any of the Avengers promo media that is out there. Has anyone actually seen any? Miles ahead of the depressing junk the studio went with. I'd even say that as a marketing compromise, one could add in subtle, two-color posterized faces of the movie's recognizable stars in your poster's background, "floating-head" style, without ruining the poster's overall effect.

How many posters have we seen so far? Five six? I have lost track. To single out one for scorn that is nowhere near the final product seems a bit premature. This is not the final one, nor will it be the one used in theaters. But even if it was, would that stop you from seeing the movie?

Marvel/Disney is the one that brought us the Arial Black font for upcoming "John Carter" film. The only time you need to really throw money and resources at something is if it is untested, new to the marketplace...in that case you have to actually create the desire, create the buzz, make people think they MUST have it...they they will be better off possessing it. Here, with The Avengers, you don't need to spent $100,000,000 trying to entice people into buying something that based on past performance you know they will most likely buy regardless of what you do, or don't do, with the marketing.

Re: Explanation For The Poster/Calm The Fuck Down
by ArmageddonProductions
Remember going to a video store to rent DVDs before they all went out of business? You walked over to rent FIGHT CLUB Special Edition, saw the artwork and to your surprise, instead of the picture of the hand holding the iconic "Fight Club" soap logo, it was a HUGE fucking picture of Brad Pitt's face that looked like it was Photoshopped in from a completely different movie, and, in the background, a much smaller Ed Norton face? Same thing here. Welcome to the future of movie advertisement.

New release video box art has been, for about the last sixteen or so years, radically different from its theatrical brethren. Why? Companies like Rentrax and Unitrax (the two companies central to distribution to Amazon, Netflix, the five or so remaining mom and pop video stores, etc.) aren't interested in what these movies are about; they are, and feel that their potential buyers/renters are, interested only in who's in the movie. That's it. If Brad Pitt is your star, you will movie 500,000 units and make x-times-investment over your wholesale purchase in the rental market. Finally, this schism has caught up with theatrical films. Unless it's a HUG FUCKING MOVIE, like TRANSFORMERS or BATMAN (or unless the concept, like TRANSFORMERS or BATMAN, actually overshadows the talent involved), it will now always be a picture of the actor. THE AVENGERS poster would go over like gangbusters at Rentrax. And it's just superhero-y enough that it can still trick Joe Movie Patron into thinking it's actually a movie poster when they peep it. Drew Struzan or Boris Vallejo? They make great movie posters, no doubt about it ... but the big boys would rather have a shitty Photoshopped PHOTOGRAPH of that picture over stylized artwork. Again, welcome to the future of movie advertising.

I actually like the concept of the photo - very front-of-comic-book. But... 1. It reminds me a little of the credits for Star Trek The Next Generation when Saturn is lit from the wrong side. Look at where each character's face is lit from. 2. The STARK building top left looks like it has 'STANK' written on it... At least at this size. 3. Cap America is clearly NOT new artwork and he's out of scale to the rest. 4. Black Widow looks like she's carrying a box... no wait! That's the hammer. Fail. 5. Forget the bloody explosion - there's a bloody great aircraft behind them... on a collision course. Yoo-hoo! Heroes! Behind you!!! 6. Why does Iron Man have a tyre attached to his right shoulder? 7. Spoiler alert - looks like STARK industries opens the portal to Asgard - look at that big ray of light! 8. They appear to be standing on a street in San Francisco, judging by the huge curving dip of the road behind them... except it's New York. I mean... kudos for letting the Empire State Building not be damaged as per usual, but c'mon... A black poster with the logo in chrome in the middle with the names of the cast in it would have done _just fine_, plus a few character one sheets as well. They don't seem to realise that people are perfectly capable of generating their own excitement for a much-awaited film!

... because of that old John Steed/Emma Peel spy show.

Yawn.

*The hulk? There was no tie in movie prior, there is also confusion with the audience...Eric Bana, Edward Norton now Mark Ruffallo - this is confusing as hell for the average audience member. *Hawkeye or green arrow or whoever the fuck Renner is supposed to be, should of had at least one cameo in every tie in movie. His power is also pretty lame in comparison to everyone elses. *Josh Whedon, is not a the best action director. Hes good at goofy dilouge heavy tounge in cheek paranormal schlock - but this kind of project needs someone with a hefty pair of balls when it comes to action heavy sequences. *Projected critc rating (out of 10) 6. With predicted reasons as to average score: -Too many people in movie, not enough focus on different individual characters -Weak nemises -Weak Action sequences / Shaky cam -Goofy, convulted plot /Prediction

There is almost no chance this will fail at the b.o. The only question is will it be a huge hit, or just a minor one.
by NeonFrisbee
Everyone wants to see this. Even people who are lukewarm on it (like me) are going to see this. Oh, and it's all every ten year old in the world can think about. It might be a mediocre movie (like MOST of the Marvel movies have been -- mediocre whatevs), but it will make a lot of money.
-
especially involving a company that by its nature is used to making advertising posters in the form of comic covers
-
this type of film has never been done before... 4 different franchises in 1 film... it is a geeks DREAM movie (literally) it is one of the most eagerly awaited films in history ,,,,as we have been teased with it for over 5 years now.. and this is the poster they come up with? unreal.
-
What an outstanding comic book cover can convey in a heartbeat is destroyed here in a heartbeat...the poster looks junky and is nothing more than digitial fodder. SIGH.
-
Go look up the movie on IMDB. In the "Warning, Spoilers" section, there is a mention of the nature of the adversary(ies). If you talk about it on this site, PLEASE POST A SPOILER WARNING for those who want to be surprised. I'll say one thing...anyone thinking this movie is "small" or that the enemies are "weak" is nuts. Can't wait!

Is that SUPER heat vision attacking the building behind THOR?

Which is why the perspective is all wrong and why no-one has any feet.

Why!?

They have been spending so much time and energy promoting this film through all their movies that they never stopped to think that this filmncould in effect kill off all their franchises at once and in one go. Seriously this is looking to suck so much. Plus I can only see this. As a USA-centric film which will suck internationally. I jave no wish to see this. That's unless it blows everyones socks off. But chances of that? Slim.

Its just a tool, its the moron behind the mouse that made this such a mess. Cap seems to be 20 ft tall...

I understand that publicists/productors/whoever had their reasons to ask for "stars unmasked" BUT it really bugs me. I mean, did they ever do that with the Batman movies in the 90's? Even the Nolan ones? NO! And i'm sure Clooney's face was fucking famous in 96-97. And Stallone on the Judge Dredd one-sheet? Just the jaw! As many has say: we want super-heroes, not super-stars! Marvel should stay faithful to the characters and put them above the actors. And Iron man's helmet is so photogenic...use it! And the background reminds me some dtv disaster movie. peuhhhhh!

It's too late to worry about being faithful. The problem
by Bedknobs and Boomsticks
isn't no masks or photoshop, but lack of the iconic look, which is the core element of superheroes. Even with the masks on, they'll still look/feel like movie-verse watered-down quasi-Ultimates Marvel. Someday, someone will get a superhero movie right, other than Donner.
-
...yes we have all seen the trailer by now so I am late coming to this party. The poster is poor that is for sure but I am still excited for the movie. Would love to live in an alternate universe where Thor and Captain America outgrossed both Iron Man films and Sherlock Holmes 2 bombed at the box office and see THEN what this poster would have looked like...
-
Is he standing on something? because it looks like hes way off in the background and gargantuan.
