Don't worry, Orlando Bloom and Djimon Hounsou are not in a ZULU remake...

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. When I first heard the news (via ScreenDaily) that Orlando Bloom and Djimon Hounsou were going to star in a movie called ZULU I started firing up the remake-hate boosters. Orlando Bloom is no Michael Caine, I was pre-writing in my head. CGI'd crowds of Zulu warriors attacking the outnumbered British aren't going to have one-tenth the impact of real human beings swarming the royally fucked British, etc.

But then I actually read the news and saw that the film is an adaptation of Caryl Ferey's crime novel ZULU, set in post-apartheid South Africa, and cooled those remake-hate engines down.

Hounsou and Bloom will be playing South African cops investigating the murder of the teenaged daughter of a famous Rugby player. Apparently that's the lip of the rabbit hole that sends these two men into spiral of darkness wherein crazed druggies wielding machetes lay in wait.

Sounds like it could be pretty great, actually. Ferey's book won all sorts of awards in France when it came out and promises to go into some horrible David Fincher-ish places. Jerome Salle will be directing the movie in South Africa shortly.
