All Your Fava Are Belong To Us!! NBC Orders 13 Episodes Of Bryan Fuller’s Lecter-Centric HANNIBAL: THE SERIES!! Fuller’s Script Is SO Awesome They Don’t Even Need A Pilot!!

Published at:  Feb 15, 2012 12:17:35 AM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Yeah baby!! NBC has ordered direct to series an hourlong that will examine the early relationship shared by serial killer Hannibal Lecter and FBI profiler Will Graham.

Bryan Fuller, creator of “Dead Like Me,” “Wonderfalls” and “Pushing Daisies,” wrote the pilot that sold it.

Graham was the troubled hero of “Red Dragon,” Thomas Harris’ first Lecter novel, which was made into Michael Mann’s excellent 1986 thriller “Manhunter” (starring Brian Cox as Hannibal Lecktor) and Brett Ratner’s rather less accomplished 2002 Anthony Hopkins remake.

The “Red Dragon” novel begins long after Graham captured Lecter. The new series would presumably deal with Graham hanging out with Lecter when the two collaborated on cases. Or perhaps afterwards, as Graham worked to hunt Hannibal The Cannibal down.

“CSI” icon William Petersen played Graham in the 1986 movie; Edward Norton stepped into the role for the remake.

“The Silence of the Lambs,” which depicts (among many other things) Lecter’s escape, was the Graham-free sequel to “Red Dragon.”

Martha De Laurentiis, a member of the filmmaking clan behind all five Lecter movies, is producing the series as well.

    this just won't work

    by iwasinjuniorhighdickhead

Lecter doesn't fit into it. A ten part miniseries would work, cause it has a definite end, but something that is designed to go on indefinitely? Urgh

    So...is Anthony Hopkins in this?

    by silv

And is it going to be set in the late 70s/early 80s?

  • With Hannibal still on the run it could force an older Graham out of retirement, setting up a nice little season/series long chase.

Read it way back in high school, and still one of my favorite books. Got me into criminal profiling. Too bad the series went downhill after silence of the lambs. I enjoyed Fuller's wonderfalls so I hope he can bring some life to this franchise.

    by baronweazle

On its own this series generates zero interest for me. I liked the Silence of the Lambs, but don't love it as most people do. Manhunter is pretty cool, but very dated aas well and all the other Hannibal Lecter stuff has been crap. But I've never seen a bad thing written by Bryan Fuller. so I will defintitely give this a chance. I feel exactly the same way about his munsters reboot.

    Bryan Fuller...

    by henry fool

Fuller did such a good job of making Sylar into this mythically evil figure in the first season of 'Heroes', especially in the early episodes, before he ever actually appeared. If Bryan can cast the same mojo towards 'Lecter' this could be a treat. I hope they go their own way with the characters and not worry too much about following the books.

I love 'Red Dragon' & 'The Silence of the Lambs' but Thomas Harris' writing really took a nose dive in 'Hannibal'. By the time he got to 'Hannibal Rising' he was barely even comprehensible. I haven't seen a great series go south like that since... well, since, Bryan Fuller left 'Heroes' after season one. Maybe B.F. can give Harris' world the same resuscitation he couldn't give to 'Heroes' after he returned towards the end of season three.

R.I.P. Pushing Daisies (may you find life after death through the power of cannibalism)

Guess I'm the only one who like HANNIBAL, both book and film

    by benbraddock

Harris really surprised me with the direction he took in the LAMBS sequel. Having Hannibal in Italy, and his getting kidnapped for revenge by his former victim was, I thought a great plot device.

He also gave us a bunch of interesting new characters (Pazzi, Verger, Margot) and milieu, instead of just completely retreading the same old ground he did in LAMBS.

I'm kind of glad Scott changed the ending to the movie cos the book's was just too nuts for most readers (me included) but overall I liked HANNIBAL.

Just too bad Ridley couldn't somehow have included the eel-scene in the movie.

Was just a huge "fuck you" and I loved it. He was really annoyed that people made Hannibal into some sort of anti-hero and wrote a big fuck you letter to them with that book. Love it.

Manhunter is an awesome movie. Silence of the Lambs is the best. Red Dragon isn't horrible but it's not good either.

This idea simply won't work. I get that they know a couple of the movie did well. They want a Dexter like show so here it is... This will fail.

Most Important: Is Thomas Harris on board?

    by somerichs

If he gives it the seal of approval, or even contributes, then it's a no-brainer for me. Bring it on.

Even if he isn't, I'm cautiously interested. I'd love to read Fuller's pilot. Are Will and Hannibal supposed to be all buddy buddy, or at least professionally acquainted on a regular basis?

I'd have to go back and check, but I didn't get the sense from Red Dragon (the book) that they had all that much contact before Will caught him. I thought one of the people killed was being treated by Lecter and Will went to interview him for one reason or another, saw some books on his bookshelf and it clicked that Lecter was the killer...am I misremembering?

If they are closely associated, that won't really ring true, to my ears...

I agree that Hannibal as some sort of an anti-hero doesn't work

    by mugato5150

The audience gets a perverse sense of pleasure in Hannibal escaping and getting revenge on his doctor in Silence of the Lambs but he still killed a lot of innocent people. Yeah, he made a child molester mutilate himself but he's still an asshole. Although the part about he and Clarice becoming lovers isn't completely unrealistic. Girls are frequently attracted to assholes. But I can understand Jodie Forster being turned off by it.

    by v3d

I saw it when it was released in the theaters. Michael Mann took a lot of liberties with the story, tailoring it to his style, but I still love that movie.

Red Dragon is more faithful to the book but Ed Norton didn't seem a good fit to me.

Also Manhunter has one of the best soundtracks of the 80's.

    by mugato5150

Red Dragon was far better than Manhunter. Brian Cox over acted terribly as Lecter and even though I love Michael Mann (no one can shoot a cityscape like him, Heat is one of my favorite movies and he even made Tom Cruise look cool in Collataral), the movie was REALLY 80's. Not even ironically '80s like Drive but just really dated. It's like Lethal Weapon and Die Hard were '80s crime movies too but weren't nearly as dated.

I'll admit that they shoe-horned in some extra scenes with Lecter and Michael Mann is a great director while Brett Ratner is a tool but I'm judging the movies on their own merits.

Graham and Lecter never worked together

    by westie

Red Dragon changed the novel. Lecter killed one of his own students and Grahan went to question him about her. He saw a rare book on his shelf and, in that weird Graham way they talk about in the book, he just knew it was Lecter. They never collaborated on cases.

I'm very glad you brought it up-it's Graham's Theme by Michel Rubini, and it's one of my favourite pieces of film music. There are variations of it throughout the film (most memorably during the the "Just you me now sport...I'm gonna find you, you son of a bitch" scene in the airport) but the rising version through the revelation scene can be found by just typing "Grahams Theme Manhunter" into YouTube. Look it up, you won't regret it

as for this news...I mean it COULD work

    by rocklobster800

but I reckon they'll go down an X-Men: First Class route and make it like Lecter and Graham were best buds before an inevitable betrayal. Yeah, Lecter helped him out and they were probably pretty civil to each other, but Graham was driven to mental meltdown trying to suss out that it was Lecter he was trying to catch, and Hannibal relishes in fucking with the guy, they didn't spend years pal-ling around. Playing up their friendship could be interesting, but it'd need to get to the point where Graham catches him and the dynamic changes, and where do they go from there? Just remake Red Dragon within the later half of the series? Actually, seeing as Ratner's version was pretty "meh", I can see it happening

I had it in my head that they worked on at least one case together, but yeah, I think they did originally just met for a few minutes before the arrest. So yeah, this will be a complete Smallville-esque redo, presumably where everyone knows everyone. Graham will probably get a case working with the Starling family at some point, knowing the way this stuff works

    Hannibal = Freddy

    by behemoth

They're doing the same thing with the Hannibal character as they did with Fred. Initially, the latter was a horrific murderer. Then, over the next few films, he becomes a wise-cracking, "lovable"-in-a-sense antihero who appears in music videos. Forget about the nature of his original crimes, America. Let's just dress our kids up as Freddy and ignore the irony.

Same crap with Hannibal. Started out as a genius lunatic, maniacal killer, now has become yet another omnipotent brainiac whose killing methodology is to be celebrated and enjoyed. Just like Dahmer. What? You mean Dahmer wasn't funny or enjoyable on any level? Oh, OK.

    Well, eat up, America.
