Costly And Hoverless BACK TO THE FUTURE Hoverboard Replicas Are Coming From Mattel (If Enough People Want 'Em)!!

Remember the Mattel Hoverboard from BACK TO THE FUTURE II and III? Seems the company will soon be issuing a full-scale replica of that iconic device, featured in the sequence below:

I'm kind of surprised it took Mattel so long to do this - perhaps they were inspired by the bat-shit-crazy sales of the Nike's recent Marty McFly shoes (thousands and thousands of dollars a pair) and decided to get in on the action? Whatever the case, sounds like this Hoverboard could end up being costly as well...so be ready to jump in on the action quickly during what appears to be a very limited ordering window which begins March 1.
Here's a press release to tell us more...
"Back to the Future Hover Board: Finally! This totally awesome 1:1 replica of the hover board from the BTTF 2 and BTTF 3 films includes multiple whooshing sounds and will glide over most surfaces (does not actually "hover" -- check back in 2015 for that feature). We’ll be taking orders for it March 1 -- March 20, 2012, and the final product will be shipped around November/December 2012. Because this is such a high-cost item, there will be a minimum number of orders required to go into production. If we don't receive the minimum orders, won't go into production and customers will not be charged. The price will be announced later this month (Note: Hover board does not work on water.)

I loved Back to the Future more than Star Wars and yet there didn't seem to be any tie-ins at all. No action figures, hoverboard replica skateboards, comic books... nothing. Just some crappy NES videogame and that was about it. Only in the last ten years have model DeLoreans been released... where were they when I was 7??

It just reminds me that 2015 is 3 years away and we have no real hoverboards, flying cars, self-lacing Nike's or Mr. Fusions. As someone who grew up in the 70's and early 80's, I really thought that 2015 would have at least some cool shit like that. So instead we just have computers and some interesting phone tech. Sigh.

First step: Go to Staples and buy yourself the different paper stocks you need. There are plenty of high quality scans out there now to use for models thanks to the Blue Ray releases and some recent Profiles in History auctions of the orginal props. You can pretty much make the Sports Almanac and the Ooh-La-La cover with some nice glossy magazine stock. Easy Photo paper, and you can print out the photo of his family, in varying degrees of erasure from existence. Easy Save the Clock Tower flyer, print it on plain blue paper, write I love you on the back and the 555 number, and you're done. Easy. The USA Today's and the other newspaper's (Doc Brown commited/honored) you take the jpgs on a usb stick to a kinkos, or local printer. Not too tough. Find a cheap frame, print out the the 1885 photo of Doc and Marty in front of the clock. Easy. Spend some coin on the retail version of the Outatime License plate, the silly hat, throw in this Hoverboard, and you've got a heck of a good looking display. Add one of the $30 Delorean models and your set.

it does have the hole where the handlebar sits into but thats likely just a film acuracy thing. though lets say this sells well, i can see them release the handlebars seperatly afterwards. though seriously, anyone who buys this just wants the board to display on a wall or something...the handlebars would just ruin the aesthetic. either way, cool idea for hardcore collectors. so we've had the multicolored hat, the shoes and now this. will they make the jacket next? i recently saw an add for a jacket with its own heater and you can even plug usb items inside it so i imagine the jacket is something they could make and would work as the movie shows. maybe minus the drying aspect. lol
