AICN UK World Exclusive Teaser Trailer: HARD BOILED SWEETS!!

Britgeek here.

It's always great to receive emails from British film-makers about their upcoming projects. I'm more than happy to hear about their films, whether they're shorts or features, and always willing to give them a bit of a hand with getting the word of their work out there.

One such email that I received yesterday concerned an upcoming British crime indie by the name of HARD BOILED SWEETS, written and directed by newcomer David L.G. Hughes, and starring Elizabeth Berrington (IN BRUGES, PSYCHOVILLE), Ian Hart (HARRY POTTER AND THE PHILOSPHER'S STONE), and Paul Freeman (RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, HOT FUZZ).

Here's Hughes to tell us a little about the film:

“It's a crime thriller set in Southend. It's my homage to US hard boiled crime writers like James Ellroy and Elmore Leonard – but all done with a VERY English sensibility. I've re-imagined Southend as a kind of Las Vegas of the third world. The idea being if Elmore Leonard got dumped in Southend and had to come up with a British crime story, then (hopefully!) it might be like this.”

One thing we do well on this side of the Atlantic in the oh-so-wide scope of cinema is crime movies, and HARD BOILED SWEETS has instantly struck a chord with me. There are no plot details yet, but stylistically, I think it looks like it could be great. After all, the characters are named after hard boiled sweets!

So, have a butcher's  at our world exclusive first look at the short and sweet (no pun intended) teaser trailer:

And the quad:

As is almost always the case with a low-budget independent film, production had its fair share of troubles, but as far as HARD BOILED SWEETS goes, “troubles” is putting it lightly. Three major stars who were attached were picked up by Hollywood, one cast member broke his neck in a freak diving accident 12 hours after he joined the project, one crew member deposited 10% of the budget into his own bank account, and another actor tragically died before production. It's certainly been a long, hard road for all involved, but now they have a feature film to show for it and one that has been picked up by Universal for a limited theatrical run in the UK on March 9.

Keep up to date with the film by following the
official Twitter account and 'Liking' the Facebook page.

After LOCK, STOCK... we seemed to get an endless torrent of British crime movies. It seemed to subside at one point but they're still there, getting released every few months and usually starring Danny Dyer.

I hope this movie is good, especially after its troubled production, but I sometimes wish that more British movie-makers would try something other than the crime genre.
