WETTER HOTTER AMERICAN SUMMER?

Published at:  Feb 09, 2012 2:01:59 PM CST

Beaks here...

Last year, David Wain teased the possibility of a WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER sequel, suggesting that it would be a prequel in which all of the actors return to play their characters as sixteen-year-olds. While I think that's a fantastic idea, it'd be a tough sell to all but the most die-hard fans of the original. I also couldn't help but think that Wain was simply making a joke.

If it is a joke, Michael Showalter is officially in on it. When asked recently about the possibility of a WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER sequel, he responded, "Absolutely yes. One-hundred-percent yes. The whole gang. Everyone's back. We're doing it."

When he says "the whole gang", I assume he's including Bradley Cooper, who's become a huge movie star since getting fucked in the ass by Michael Ian Black. Whether it's a prequel or a RETURN OF THE SECAUCUS SEVEN sequel, I'm in.

For most of movie-going public it's a mediocre movie at best. A 31% on Rotten Tomatoes, and 6.5 on IMDB.

if it hadn't gone off the rails with the ridiculous shit. I'm not even talking about the talking mixed veggies, because that could be interpreted as all in Meloni's character's head. It just tried too hard to be offbeat, when it should have been grounded in a bit more reality.

    Hilarious movie.

I would definitely be interested in a prequel or sequel. I was a bit disappointed that Wain sold out a bit with Role Models. I’m wondering if his new movie Wanderlust will be in the same vein. He also made The Ten fairly recently though, so it seems like he still has an interest in more outlandish State-style comedy. Also his web series is really funny.

The butt sex scene made me uncomfortable and some jokes just fell flat. Obviously some jokes were stolen over the years (heroin scene ripped off by Observe and Report) but still maintained their flair. All in all I'd be curious to see a sequel just to see if they can reunite the whole cast again, and if they will still take it to the limit.

Wow. That is beyond incredible. The funniest thing about it is that some people were actually seeing in the trailer pieces of what was about to go so wrong. However, there was an overwhelming sense of "George won't fail us....Just trust George.....don't worry, George is going to knock it out of the park."

Now, go and read an AICN talkback today. Even a talkback about something that is universally loved is filled with hate and venom.

I forgot how AICN used to be, and is seems the change, at least looking back on it now, erupted from the massive failure and letdown that was The Phantom Menace.

I'm tempted to go back and read the talkback again, it's just so unbelievable. There was a community belief and true hope for that movie, and even the trolls were upbeat.

If you remember right, the trailer kicked all form of ass. It's still, all these years later, one of the best trailers of all time.

It's a little hard watching it now, because now you see alll the images and they stir up anger all over again. Yet, you CAN still watch the trailer and feel the excitement that we all felt watching it before we saw the movie. The trailer was really good.

Well, I think alot of it may due to just our demographic that grew up with the original trilogy just getting older. I mean, the truth is a damn bitter pill to swallow, but the older we get it seems that the more we try and look at the past through rose colored lenses. I never participated in the old talkbacks, I was more of a troll anyhow. But looking at them there does seem to be a more sense of optimism out there. Now it seems as if everything gets hated on. Even movies like Prometheus which hasn't come out yet. I mean, I just celebrated my 34th birthday a couple of days ago. Four more years and it will be 20 years since I graduated high schoo. 20 years........................Hell it's been 20 years now since Sam Kinison died and I still haven't gotten over that one.

But you're succeeding! Seriously though: you've heard of comedy, right? It is a thing where exaggeration or absurdity makes us laugh sometimes. Also it can involve wordplay, falling down/getting punched, etc. It's a good genre, sorry Wet Hot American Summer wasn't the best intro to its general tenets. Be sure to check out the classics sometime.

I have seen all the classics, and that's why WHAS failed on some level for me. It started off really strong, but after the "going in to town" scene it went off track. It was too looney. All the classics have some wackiness, but they don't overstep. And I don't hate the movie. I enjoy watching it because the moments that hit, hit strong. The soup can bit is hilarious, and Meloni's speech would have been a lot stronger if it didn't end with him actually humping a fridge. At least not with the whole camp cheering him on.

I recall that I laughed and enjoyed it at the time. I forgot that it was Bradley Cooper getting fucked in the ass by Michael Ian Black, that's how long it's been since I've seen this. I remember Chris Meloni being funny and the David Hyde Pierce and Janeane Garafolo stuff being almost obligatory and kind of lame. Isn't Michael Showalter doing car commercials now?
