Interview with "Wonder Boys" & "Harry Potter" screenwriter Steve Kloves

Published at:  Feb 29, 2000 5:51:20 PM CST

Greetings, citizens! ROBOGEEK here with something pretty groovy to pass along.

This weekend I checked out Curtis ("L.A. Confidential") Hanson's fantastic new film "Wonder Boys" (go see it!), which was adapted from Michael Chabon's 1995 novel by Steve Kloves. As a result, Kloves just became one of my favorite screenwriters, though he's been around for years; he wrote and directed "Flesh and Bone" and "The Fabulous Baker Boys," and wrote "Racing the Moon." Currently he's adapting J. K. Rowling's "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" for Warner Bros., which Steven Spielberg passed on directing last week (just like we reported he would, btw).

Anyway, Michael Sragow over at Salon has done a truly outstanding (and extensive) interview with Kloves, which was published last week but just came to my attention today. (Sue me.) It's one of those rare articles that's so damn good, we'd be remiss if we didn't recommend it to our readers -- even if it does send them to someone else's site. (If you like it, come back here and click on an ad banner, would ya?)

Enjoy!

THE WHOLE TRUTH OF THE DMFC IN A NUTSHELL!

    by crackerfarmboy

As you know DMFC has been running rampant on the LOTR thread and causing havoc on this board for a long time. Well recently at great risk to myself I've learned the truth about him. It was he that destroyed your beloved Cougars, it was he that erased all of your posts, and it is he that runs this board. Let me explain; There is no danmaunzfanclub. The DMFC is the shape not the person! He is only a front of a web of lies. I put myself in great danger by posting this but here is the true formula of DMFC. BigLarz! + Darth Bond + Niiice + Ms. Foster + Smilin Jack Ruby + Mr.Grumpy + Archwhatever Deux + fanboy holocaust + danmaunzfanclub = THE SAME PERSON! THEY ARE ALL THE SAME! DON'T YOU SEE? Here is the final and most important fact all these characters are in actuality posted by FATHER GEEK!!!!!!!!! I do not lie. Harry your own flesh and blood has betrayed you, sleep with one eye open my friend. Now, I can no longer post here anymore and I must leave this public computer before even more threats come my way. Now you all know. GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN. IT'S A GAME THAT YOU CAN'T WIN! A friend of mine had a saying, "I don't believe in God, but God is the only thing that scares me." Well my fellow AICN posters, I believe in God and the only thing that scares me is the danmaunzfanclub!

Crackerfarmboy, methinks the Cougars was torn apart because it never really took off....I mean,Niiice laughed like crazy,Mr.Grumpy was POd,and darth psychotic has apparently died or gone into a coma or something.Besides, there are better more interesting conspiracy theories to have.Lemme show you how it's done:(Shivering, frothing at the mouth, spork in one hand,hand-held Panasonic something or other in the other)Notice how Pikachu from Pokemon can't reach his genetalia??!?!?His arms are too friggin short, man!!!!He don't even got genetalia,MAN!!!!Look at the kids, man!!!It's the kids!!!They're trying to get to the kids!!!They're teaching our kids that cut and cuddly things don't have winkies!!!NO WINKIES,MAN!!!!!!It's the government, man!!!(It's important to bring up the goverment and its evils in the middle of something that has seemingly nothing to do with the government)They're telling our CHILDREN(stressing the future of America)that if you want to be fancy free and giddy and fun and popular, you must abandon your sexuality!!Don't you see it,MAN(saying man a bunch, and spraying froth as you do)?!?!?!?!They don't want us reproducing!!!It's a plan to kill America and Japan and Europe, man!!They want them little countries to take over!!!!It's the KIDS,MAN!!!!It's widespread, man, there's no way to stop it!!!!!
At this point,it's a good idea to either scream or bring up a "revolution"that consists of shooting squirrels or other small mammals. This has been an Educational Moment with User ID Indeed!

Wish I saw it sooner so I could've torn DMFC a new arse-hole. Anyway, I agree with everything you said over there, keep rockin' bro. This topic blows, don't know why I'm here. Suck it.

Pokemon is a modern fantasia on gay themes

    by niiiice

User id indeed, there is much more to it than meets the eye. It has come to my attention that Pokemon is being used as a complex analogy to explain the intricacies of homosexuality to children. Bear with me for a second as I go into the sordid details of this operation. Building on the conspicuous lack of Pokemon ding-dongs, we can see that there are evidently no gender differences among pokemon subspecies. An entire tribe of cute and yet gender-ambiguous pikachu are seen in one episode, playfully frolicking with each other. The implied subtext is quite obvious, but as this is a family site, I will not elaborate further. Then there is also this convenient little process called "evolution", which produces different types of pokemon. And, of course the metaphor: while homosexuality may be an "evolutionary" dead end, it can't be completely wrong or else the genes manifesting homosexuality would have been removed under the process of natural selection. SO AS WE CAN ALL SEE, someone can read anything they want to into literature, media, etc. BUT if that person chooses to become offended by real or imagined messages, his or her anger reveals more about that person's stereotypes than the movie itself. Think they could use this in the LOTR talkback?

    Yes!! I believe you Farmboy!!!!!

    by conspiracy red

Yes yes!! DMFC is actually a Club alright, and they reek havok on the talkbacks! They must be stopped!! On another subject... McCain. McCain said pubically that his favorite band is "NiN" and he also enjoys Rage Against the Machine.... is this just BS to show he's connected to the public and youth? No. NiN's Trent Reznor is long known to have connections in the Rock and roll underground, where those more "liberal" rock bands reside, and where the popular band Rage Against the Machine chooses to remain. And Rage uses it connections with NiN to keep their images clearer than it shoudl be.. you see, Rage is a front. Rage against the Machine is an Anti-democratic organization who seeks to see the return of iron fist Communism. Rage is inciting maddness in the mexican areas, so that they will rise up and take a cue from Cuba who they often qoute, outside of their albums which funds many of their covert ops, that Cuba has a high literacy rate, and education. They wish to see America taken down... but first comes Mexico, a base of operations for the new communist regime. But still... Vote for Mc Cain in the republican primary. Better than Bush, who said nothing about the confederate flag in SC, nor its interracial dating laws ( "I can't comment on that" ). He wishes to bring in a neo-nazi third reich.

    by niiiice

But while we're on the subject, and before you all get deleted, how many of you know that McCain still uses the word "gooks" to refer to the Vietnamese? Now perhaps this is just colloquial as a result of his imprisonment, but the mere word itself represents all kinds of racial anti-Vietnamese sentiments.

I can't even get a coherent thought out on this post. I don't think anyone has really discussed what this Talk Back is about. A few points

    by deltahead

1)Pokemon is about... not a whole damn lot, from what I can see. It's a good way to introduce kids to anime, makes boatloads of money for Nintendo, and has led to more amatuerishly drawn hentai (of Jessie and Misty) than Minerva Mink. *****************************
2)Talkback "teams" are ludicrous. Because this is NOT A GAME. This is a movie and TV discussion site. I'm not trying to score points off of anyone, I'm trying to talk TO someone, and get advance news. See the difference? *****************************
3)If someone wants to go schizo and post in 42 different names, that's fine by me. Although I doubt Father Geek has spent years selling movie and TV memorabilia at conventions and such just so he could have a son who started a website wherein he could fuck with completely anonymous people whom he may never meet. Just seems like an inefficient way to be an asshole. ******************************
    4) Warrior, you're nobody's fucking hero. If you go anywhere near the unbelievable beauty that is Leelee Sobieski, I'll put my boot so far up your ass I'll leave footprints on your brain. Peace.

Wonder Boys is actually a fun and hazy dream of a film. Achingly poetic true to the author's form. If you're familiar with Michael Chabon's work, it may well be just what you hoped for..i haven't read Wonder Boys but I have the terrific Mysteries of Pittsburgh and Werewolves in their Youth...these were both excellent novel and short stories respectively..highly recommended...the movie is a sort of rambling journey about an author who teaches at a university, two of his students who become part of his personal life, and his affair with the Chancellor...he is rebounding from the success of his first novel, in the midst of writing a 2nd which he can't seem to concentrate on...his editor comes town as he is dealing with his crisis...and the story congeals as he is forced to examine his own worth from the parallel reflections in the people surrounding him.. Michael Douglas was an appropriately slothfull and conflicted novelist, driving here and there trying to sort out what to do with Tobey Maguire's nascent genius..as they have gotten into some trouble together...and his own predicament.. he resorts to drugs to cope with this ominous transitional period..although, the story has a perfect anti-drug stance... I believe Dante Spinotti was the DP and some of the shots were breath taking..one in particular an ocean-deep sequence during a moonlit snowfall outside the chancellor's literati soiree..unfortunately the editing robbed a beautiful moment..you want this scene to last forever...the movie cradled the lazy, conflicted complacency so often infused in Chabon's writing..Katie Holmes had a tiny but well played role..Tobey Maguire made me like him all over again, after his massive exposure and wretched Ride With The Devil..the only real problem I had with Wonder Boys, was Downey Jr...I adore him, but it seemed as though he were walking through this...some of his expressions were slightly off... either way, the soundtrack is nice..as is the photography..and the writing..the film may not change your life..it isn't a subversive rant, but it impressed on me a number of nostalgic and lyric stimuli. I think you just might like it..

  • Everybody loves you or (in this case) everybody hates you, but everybody KNOWS you. I'd like to take this time to thank the entire Talkback "community" for making DanMaunzFanClub the 4th or 5th most infamous talkbacker of all time. Yeah, he really did deserve it didn't he? And you guys gave it to him. It drove some people to create whole new email accounts just to mess with his name. Damn me, and sometimes I sit here wondering why no one responds to real, insightful posts that actually have something to say. But then, I guess its the same reason why audiences flocked to go see "Big Daddy" instead of "Princess Mononoke". So I'm thinking, when will we be able to get back to good old fashioned talkback, where everybody flamed everyone else, instead of allowing DMFC to domineer and single handedly change the scope and focus of entire talkbacks?

    Kloves

    by mrbeaks

I'm so happy Steve Kloves has returned from self-imposed obscurity, but I'm hoping he'll get back to writing original works. That said, his script for WONDER BOYS was, like his other work, rich in atmosphere; a virtue that most of these story structure/perception shift slaves like Ehran Kruger and M. Knight Shyamalan appear to know nothing about (sorry, but, IMO, credit for THE SIXTH SENSE's eerie feel belongs solely to DP, Tak Fujimoto.) We're lucky Kloves is tackling HARRY POTTER, which, providing the right director is attached, could be a children's classic along the lines of THE WIZARD OF OZ.

    Roeg Would Be Perfect

    by mrbeaks

He's done justice to children's literature in the past (Dahl's THE WITCHES,) and is responsible for perhaps *the* eeriest film ever made, DON'T LOOK NOW. He's been inconsistent as of late, but, like many filmmakers, all he needs is the right script. Unfortunately, I think you can count on Spielberg protege, Brad Silberling, to helm POTTER. If not him, then Chris Columbus.

like in some pseudo solipsistic Fight Club-esque manner, we're all just messages posted by DMFC trying to piss himself off...or even more chilling...what if EVERYBODY ELSE is DMFC, and everytime you agree with something someone says against the Hive Mind, you're actually still agreeing with him in a wacky way? Sort of like a 1984 world where you can't trust the subversives since it's quite possible they are double agents. God that's freaky. -Loki

    Christ, Sutter Cane, be original...

    by loki trickster

this is almost word for word the crap that came out of AntiConformist99's mouth last year during the Dogma topics...I don't mean you sound like him, I mean you took the words from that post and replaced Lane Myers with DMFC, and let the rest go. You weren't even smart enough to erase the part about Y2K. It's also Biblically illiterate: you are arguing for a One World Government (run by the true Christians, of course)...which is exactly what the Anti-Christ is supposed to use to take over the world (not that I believe in that tripe...I'm a White Anglo Saxon Atheist). Now, the only question is if you, too, are part of the DMFC gestalt (as Anti-Conformist99 was just a pissy Lane Myers with nothing better to do), or if you're just some kook. Whether you are or not, at least Lane was mildly interesting, at least in retrospect. -Loki
