THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN trailer is up...

Hey folks, Harry here...  I'm now going to think of THE LIZARD as just being a hybrid of THE LIZARD and SCORPION...  because that gorgeous shot of Spidey and the Lizard on top of the building in the rain...  It looks too good to instantly hate on due to no labcoat and the tragic loss of Aligator jaws.   I like the look of this.   I'm not gaga.   I'm not completely over the moon in love with it.   I am a bit annoyed at the costume.  But man, hearing Spidey trash talk?  Big fan.   I also love the look of the film.   I love that Peter Parker isn't just a kid that wandered into a radioactive spider...  but also happens to be brilliant - and his brilliance and willingness to work with scientists that have ethical boundary issues happens to be one of my favorite types of Peter Parker / Spider-Man stories.   In particular, that has always been my favorite tie between Peter and Doc Connors.   I also kind of love Spidey tagging buildings...  because he did that too.  This feels more completely Spidey.   I mean, Look at Gwen Stacy!   Sigh.  I really like this trailer.   But there's still a couple of design issues that drive me nuts - cuz it wouldn't have cost a dime more to get THE LIZARD perfect...   but the design is doing stuff I think is cool - so let's see how it works dramatically in the film.   I am one of them nerds that actually does want and craves the lab coat.

Here ya go:

After watching this about 12 more times, I've decided that if they just add wavy Spidey Sense lines out of his head about 5 times in the movie, that Lizard snoutless wouldn't bug me too much.

The Lizard(s) may be the weak link, but otherwise it's got my money.

  • Couldn't it at least be ripped so it's like he's TRYING to maintain some level of secrecy? I mean, I know he's just some kid that very few people could recognize, but he's still recognizable. Other than that, visually it looks great. Now definitely looking forward to this.

That's not the Lizard. Sorry. Why can't they just let Spideys villains look over the top instead of realistic. Couldn't pull it off with green goblin or venom, and cleary they aren't with Lizard.

    by cheekerpot

He's had so many versions of him spread through the spidey timeline it doesn't bother me that they made their own version of him for the movie. What does sorta bother me is the ' grimey' look of spidey's suit and the dark eyes. I'll probably enjoy the movie a lot but I doubt it will be better than Raimi's take for ME.

    by slder78

Everything looked fake. I mean the filmed on location in Times Square and it still didn't look real. And you could sure tell that whenever Spidey was in the air he was cgi. In this movie there's none of that. So I actually have high hopes for this. Could it be that Raimi = Burton and Webb = Nolan?

  • February 7, 2012 2:55 AM CST

    Looks forgettable to me

    by MJDeViant

Doesn't look as bad as the other 3 I would like to forget. It's just a trailer though, so here's hoping. Does look like they got a good mix of gritty mixed in where it is not like too gritty or reality based. Spidey can't be too dark IMO, or it just loses something. SO it needs to be a little lighter I think BUT not like those Raimi NBC movie ones. Couldn't stand them.

  • I'll play a video game. That trailer had all the crap that you nerds complain about in every other thread. Nothing in it looks original. I didn't see single spidey swing or clash that wasn't CG. It just looked like a darker version of what Raimi already made 3 times before. And the look of the Lizard... What am I talking about? You guys went gaga over the Green Lantern trailer!

  • February 7, 2012 2:57 AM CST

Sarcastic/wise-ass spidey is satisfyingly like the comic

    by Ray Gamma

And the greenscreen spidey swinging through the streets is way more easy to watch than the horrible CGI spidey cartoon bits from Raimi's movies. As a long-time Raimi fan from way back in 1983, I never liked his Spiderman movies at all. Tobey is a good actor but just totally miscast as Spiderman. And CGI just fucking ruins any film's chances these days. Look at "The Thing" remake for instance. Despite plenty warning form the fanbase, they went and did the CGI thing anyway, and got royally fucking panned for it. Deservedly.

    That was painful...

    by kubricksnutsack

Garfield is good, but I just don't like the look of this and the re-writing of the origin story. I like the Spidey universe where his missing parents are just that - missing. No backstory linking them to Doctor Connor - we don't need that shit. And so in an attempt to tell "the untold story" - we get a deliberately convoluted version of the mythos which will get the casual viewer going: WTF? I'm finding it really hard to love the Lizard character design - in fact, it looks like there is NO DESIGN at all. They just made him green with a tail. And the wise-cracking... I guess I was one of the few who didn't miss the constant wise-cracking from Spidey in the Raimi feature. Let's be honest, giving Spidey a real-world dynamic, it would be pretty impossible for him to be quipping every 20 fucking seconds what with breathing and moving and stuff. And besides, in the real world, every time he came out with a funny, the criminal would have had time to pull his gun and shoot the little fucker dead. So no...I'm not a big fan of the quips. And it's dark... 'Nuff said. I hate Christopher Nolan's execrable Batman films because they are deliberately "dark" in order to give them extra weight, but which are undermined by a lead character that sounds as if he is trying to squeeze out a particularly tough shit every time he talks. Oh well, I guess I'll catch this movie when it comes on the TV.

  • February 7, 2012 3:12 AM CST

    *Yawn*....seriously...*YAWN*

    by Jonathhan Kana

doesnt take much to impress you people anymore. its the same fucking thing all over again. THE SAME FUCKING THING! How are you people not sick of this shit by now? I mean, I can understand why the studio decided to reboot and make the same fucking movie all over again, and its because they knew idiots would pay to see more special effects.... but what I dont understand is why arent you people bored by this shit yet? WTF You can say beat by fucking beat exactly what will happen in this movie. No lie. Probably down to the minute mark. EXACTLY what will happen, when it will happen, and how it will happen. SO WHY ARE YOU PEOPLE SO HYPED OVER THIS? I remember not knowing what the matrix is and being fucking floored. I remember seeing Pulp Fiction and my mind melting from all the crazy shit going on. I remember seeing back to the future and saying holy shit, you mean to tell me that my mom has got the hots for me?? this movie doesnt seem to have a great story, great dialogue, or do anything remotely differently from anything we have seen before - its extremely generic- yet because it is SPIDERMAN you guys are screaming like little bitches. Fuck man. Ive seriously lost all hope for the movie going audiences in America. When not even the nerds can say enough is enough, when the nerds turn into transformer audiences....thats when I know its time to get the fuck out of America and get on some international shit. because american movies used to be fucking awesome, but now they SUCK and you people are okay with them being the same thing. fuck all of you. peace.

How does this look any different fro Rami's version?

    by ChiTownsBest

They're still doing the same bullshit where his mask magically comes off in every big fight scene. The scene where the tower is falling looks terrible, as do all the swat team scenes. This looks like exactly what it is, a cheaper remake.

  • Since most people expect this to be terrible and expectations are low like mine, the movie may actually benefit from this. Saw some cool shots in the trailer so maybe there's a slight chance the movie will be ok.

  • Hey, look, Peter's making jokes. He's supposed to do that, y'know.

  • February 7, 2012 3:18 AM CST

Can't see any reason to hate on the Spidey Suit

    by dozzie81

Lizard looks a Lizard, not THE Lizard. I can accept this. What i don't like is just how dark everything looks, say what you like about Raimi's but at least you could see what was going on. Seems the only idea film makers have to make things more serious/cooler is to turn the brightness down. Lazy.

  • February 7, 2012 3:18 AM CST

On a positive note: Denis Leary as the Detective...

    by Jay

Just bought me a ticket to the movie.

  • How anyone can look at that trailer and see anything but the fact that sony made a cheap looking movie is crazy. The comparisons to X-Men:First Class are ridiculous. The trailers for First Class made me want to see a movie I thought I would have no interest in. This trailer just made me not want to see another Spidey movie until Marvel regains the rights back.

This ain't Schumacker folks! I'll admit, I've been insanely leery of this whole Ultimate Universe/new story telling concept crap, but damn if this gritty realism wasn't just skeeted all over this preview! This could blow serious chunks come July, but if that's the case, these people need to corner the market on movie trailers. This is everything I'm looking for in a Peter Parker tale. And I'm one of those geeks who lived, breathed, eat, and shit Spider-Man all through the 80's and 90's. The Goomba Lizard can be forgiven if this movie isnt bogged down by CGI overkill and lack of characterization. Let's see what Webb can pull out his ass. I'm set for July 2012. Now I'm more pissed than before Batman rip off garbage

    by Andrew Coleman

Everything is in darkness... That's not Spidey. How easily a flashy trailer tricks children. Don't care how catchy the trailer is, doesn't change the fact that Spider-man's costume is shit. Lizard is shit with his dip shit human face. Also seems like they make Connors into a straight villain "You want the truth? Come and get it!" What the fuck does that even mean? Also ruining the origin story by bringing in his parents but obviously not going to make them spies(Since they can't get Red Skull). So of course we find out Osborne killed them when he becomes the Goblin in AS2. Bet any money they chicken out with Gwen Stacey in fear of pissing off the Twilight crowd. Sure was this trailer cooler? Yup. Did it have action? Yes it did. Did it prove this isn't some jump on the darker batman band wagon? NOPE. At least Snyder's Supes will have scenes in the fucking day time. This looks like trash marketed towards the MTV crowd. No thanks. If you back this movie you have no right to hate on the SW prequels, that's just a fact.

I got over my initial hate and watched it again and....

    by Jonathhan Kana

WHAT THE FUCK IT STILL FUCKING SUCKS! And I put my finger on what I hated the most about this trailer - the shitty spacey minimalistic robo music shit. it sounds CHEAP!!!! the music sounds fucking CHEAP man. like my little brother and his friends got on their dr dre HP beat station laptops and starting fucking around with random sounds while smoking some weed and got bored 20 minutes into and just looped that shit over and over again to clips of dark ass shitty CGI and non dialogue - yea yea the DIALOGUE WHAT THE FUCK so its like, for some reason I picture dennis leary having most of the dialogue in that trailer and its not even fucking remotely interesting. then there is one spidey joke, but its not even a fucking joke. its just spidey responding in something that spidey would KINDA say, but never said in the comic because its far too fucking generic. and even then it falls flat because of the seriously generically and sparse "music" playing in and out. so yea, cheap music, cheap dialogue. cheap dark ass CGI. oh and that means this movie will SUCK in 3D, because as Im sure all of you should know by now when you put on 3D glasses it makes everything darker, right? Ok so imagine watching this dark ass trailer with sunglasses on. you already cant see shit, now you are just blind as fuck. they are raping you for your 15 bucks and you cant even fucking see it happening, fucking morons. i dont even see any reason why I should happen to LIKE andrew garfield or "peter" or "spiderman" via this trailer. Nothing about the characters or actor himself are speaking to me, there is no reason to care for him, other than us already knowing who spiderman is. There is no "character" there that I felt I wanted to root for. and that my loser friends is the biggest problem with movies nowadays. Gone are lovable cocky guys like Indiana Jones, or nervous but genuinely good guys like Marty Mcfly, in are mouthy twerps with no real redeeming factors. we are supposed to like them simply because....they are the main character. FUCK THAT. and FUCK YOU. peace.

    by Talkbacker with no name

If you get more than the obvious ones right, I still won't think you are anything but a bellend for only being interested in being first than reading the article or watching the trailer. You lost all respect for your opinions the moment you acted like such a fucking twat.

  • Also Did they change the cinematographer? The last trailer had a different visual aesthic than this one. The color grading doesn't look the same. Although Nothing can beat Bill Pope's work in SM2 this just doesn't look right. Oddly enough I think the web shooters are kind of cool and this is coming from someone who liked the organic web idea. All the bullshit about practical effects was exactly that; bullshit. To be fair a practical spidey would look lame as fuck. You need that CGI acrobatic shit to achieve the slick look of the comics. A dude swinging from wires while the forces of gravity prevent him from doing spidey-esque manoovers would look visually unappealing.

    The origin story

    by WhatTheHellHappenedToMe

Seems to be integrated throughout the movie, with the villain and climax playing a role, instead of a boring thing we have to plod through in the first act. I'm OK with that.

  • February 7, 2012 4:10 AM CST

This just doesn't do a damn thing for me. The only thing that caught my attention was some apparent bullet dodging by Spidey. I really don't want to hate this, but it just looks lousy. The web shooters are kinda cool, but who really gives a fuck? Web Shooters aren't going to make or break this flick. The wise cracking really came of as forced to me. I don't know... It just ain't doing anything for me.

they messed up not only the lizard but doc conners also

    by phxmagirises

Since when is conners a villian??? The lizard and conners have a dr jekyl mr hide relationship. Conners uses science to better man kind and the lizard eats people. Conners hates the lizard and wants nothing but to be rid of him. Two diff personalities. Conners cant control the lizard. Yet here they make it seem like conners himself was behind the death of peters parents. Plus it looks likes conners in the film is embracing the lizard and wants peter dead and obviously knows he is spider man when he challenges peter that if he wants the truth to come and get it. That is not conners. And conners doesnt have a creepy accent also since when does gwen know peter is spider man and why are the webshooters electronic? In comics they are mechanical and dont require Aa batts to operate. It kinda makes it seem like its the suite that makes peter spider man like a g.i. Joe rise of cobra super suite rather than something peter wears to hide his identity. Like he cant be spidey without it . to they guy above i am a spidey fan and im not loving this so go fuck yourself

Hoping something sticks...Raimi got upstaged by a rookie. Accept it.

  • February 7, 2012 4:15 AM CST

Wow, you need to do some serious mental gymnastics to hate this

    by David Cloverfield

Just from the trailer it looks like a more coherent story than spidey 1, which I liked. (although the fact that Peter's father figure, power ranger dafoe happened to get superpowes in the same time, completely unrelated to him made him even more ridicolous. At least the lizard's powers are related to spidey's. His parents, his powers, his enemies, his webshooters seem to be one story now, one leading to the other.) spider-man is finally cool, happy to be swinging from the rooftops. i don't really care how much money is thrown at the screen. Also: not one annoying one liner in the trailer. So if you hate this, you were gonna hate it no matter what.

  • February 7, 2012 4:15 AM CST

    You can smell the DESPERATION...

    by Grinning White Skull

...and it's gotten worse. Boy the tone is off in spots. Someone mentioned they thought this was a musical. It plays almost like a 40s MGM musical, gosh darn it!. Leary is lit so bright in scenes like off of TV or a Glee episode or something. His delivery on the lines reeks of over-baked TV. This will start off with a big weekend and then Peter Parker out. Because Garfield seems so lame in this. Perhaps channeling Mickey Rooney ham on wry? Oh, that line on the fire escape! And his and Leary's exchange about Spidey and cops! Like something out of WELCOME BACK KOTTER. The effects look movie big but the Parker family and Gwen family scenes sound and feel like something off of mediocre TV. And Rhys's line delivery! I've been hearing how incredible he was as an actor but man, he brought nothing but a slightly underdone but over-the-top stuff to this role. The uneven feel and tone to the film leads straight to the director. Easy to see why Sony is so worried about it.

Less suck than Spiderman 1 and 3

    by Mike Plowman

Spiderman 1 sucked cos of the crappy Goblin helmet, but Toby M was a great Peter Parker. He exuded dweeb and you really bought that he couldn't quite believe his luck in getting with MJ. Spiderman 3 sucked because of Venom, and Raimi being sucked into the let's put two villains in the movie syndrome. Spiderman 2 was ace, one villian, well realised onscreen. And JJJ rocked in all three. The Amazing Spiderman - Can't buy Garfield as Parker, looks like he has just stepped out of a Twilight Novel, which is why he was cast I suppose. No snout on The Lizard? Shame but I can see the technical reason for not having it. If you are going to have him spouting dialogue it might have been crappy and unconvincing. Supporting cast? Gwen Stacey, meh, could be anyone. Sheen great. Leary great. Sally Field annoys me almost as much as Meryl Streep so no thanks. No JJJ? Mistake. It doesn't look fantastic but nor does it look terrible. Certainly doesn't suck as bad as Nolan's upcoming abortion's trailer did.

    by cushing1967

To be honest, and it might be a wee bit nit-picky but the only thing that bothered me about this was the night time settings. Spider-Man isn't a character that only operates at night. The rest - well, I'll wait and see. I only really liked Spider-Man 2 so don't have too much investment in Sam Raimi's trilogy.

I'm very picky about parker/spidey being done right, I'll need to see more from this new guy before making up my mind, but so far its been very promising. couple notes. Leary looks so goblinish in the trailer and his voice is perfect for it, don't tell me he's been miscast. I already get a sense that they're making this peter actually super genius, and THAT's why he's a good spiderman, not just because he's got powers. I like that. Raimi's movies made Parker's brains an afterthought and he solved most of his problems with his fists and unlimited sperm-webbing. and lastly keep the jjj from the other movies if possible. who gives a fuck.

Wondering about all the positive talkbackers at AICN recently?

    by Wookie_Weed

AICN copped a lot of criticism for its overly negative, hate-filled talkbacks last year. The past few weeks, there have been a lot of "this film looks amazing!" and "this film is a masterpiece!" gushing praise from talkbackers no one has seen or heard of before. That's because many of them are plants. There's a concerted effort recently, by AICN or outside influences, to make the talkbacks have more positive reactions to trailers and news. I am not wearing a tinfoil hat. This is all fact.

So you don't think this looks original enough for you?

    by Gabe Athouse

To those of you complaining this isn't original: gee, ya think? A 50 year old superhero that's been in thousands of comics and cartoons and TV shows and movies and on lunchboxes and t-shirts and underoos since before you were fucking born, and still will be long after you are dead, isn't original? What would we do without these trenchant observations of yours? How do you feel about James Bond dressing in suits and fucking chicks and suavely killing guys in exotic locations? Or Superman wearing a cape and flying around? It's not about originality - it's about how well yet another set of artists have retold the same old shit. If you liked the old shit, here's some more. If you didn't like it, never mind - going into talkbacks to complain about the lack of originality is like complaining about the lack of datable women in a gay bar. WRONG BAR DOUCHELORD

    Utterly ruined by lousy CGI

    by IWantCheese

I'm hoping it's some sort of horrible frame rate issue with the trailer maybe, because that looked TERRIBLE. The bit where he's swinging through the city doesn't look 10% as real as Raimi's and by now the CGI should be 1000% better. Awful.

    Orign again does suck...

    by AndoSoundsLikeAMong

But if they didn't, they'd have to either stick with a load of baggage-settings from the other films (organic webs) or spend too long shoe-horning in exposition to get the audience up to speed with the changes. I don't think, with a total cast and crew reboot, you really have much choice when coming into an previously established character. You've got to say what you are doing that is different, and the most organic way is the origin story. Amazing that Burton's Batman got away with it, and in fact, I'd like to watch it again with that in mind, (it seemed less stand-out of a point at the time). Of course Nolan did the origin, but nicely, and again - it was needed, really.

The early stuff in the trailer was pretty good, seemed to get a bit generic towards the end. For a reboot that I really didn't want, this doesn't look too bad. One thing I will say is that Emma Stone should be a much better fit for the series than Kirsten Dunst. Dunst can look hot at times but usually she looks like she's taken half the world's supply of sleeping drugs before arriving on-set.

Now, again, we have all the usual tards saying this "lacks story". IT'S A FUCKING TRAILER. Watch the fucking movie and then judge you simpleton fucks. Raimi's versions were, for the most part, shit. He nailed some things, but destroyed many others. Spiderman 3 was one of the worst, big budget movies I have ever seen, and it destroyed much of the goodwill part 2 built up (despite some serious stupidity in that film). Another pointless, Hollywood remake from a merely ok film to begin with. And why do they always miscast the female parts? Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane; seriously?! And while I like Emma Stone, why cast her as Gwen Stacy? Doesn't make a lick of sense to me.

    by Astronut

I found myself just staring with glazed eyes, almost bored, actually. I grew up collecting Spider-Man comics for years. From issue #129 all the way into the #225 range. I was such a fan. Love the character. But this. I could not care less for this. Seriously. Just looks... lame. I think this is going to severely disappoint a lot of fans.

    Re: The Trailer

    by ArmageddonProductions

Sadly, based on the trailer, I think the only thing that's gonna end up undoing this movie is the half-assed retelling of the origin story. As goofy as the redesigned costume appeared to be at first glance, it actually winds up looking MORE like the comic book Spider-Man on film than Raimi's did, and the effects work looks about eighty times more convincing than Raimi's version. Even the Lizard doesn't really bother me (I can see how some giant alligator dude flapping around would kind of look stupid). I understand they can't exactly go back and do Raimi's SPIDER-MAN origin story over again, but this version probably won't play too well. Other than that (and those "Spider-tags" -- it would take him like three hours to actually paint one of those fucking things), I think Webb completely nailed the comic aesthetic.

    Gator-Mouthed Lizard Problem

    by Shankapotomus

I have no problem with the look of the Lizard. How do you make the comic book look real in this case? A gator snout/mouth would simply go up and down on a hinge and look like a puppet mouth. To give him more expression, they had to make him a little more human looking. Let's thank God for that after the power ranger Green Goblin abomination. I think it looks pretty strong visually. The story will of course decide it for me. But I'm not shutting this out based on some Rami nostalgia. Of Rami's films, only 2 holds up over the years. 1 is ok but very fluffy. 3 is a tragedy that correctly cost Rami the right to ever make another Spider-Man movie. This is going to be a good year for super hero movies. One trilogy ends, one begins here for sure. Plus we get the start of an Avengers franchise that has a lot of long-term potential. It's a good time to be a geek. Relax and enjoy it.

  • You'll notice they pretty much leave out any indication of this being an origin story. Hopefully that means they're not focusing on it. No one wants to spend a half an hour or more going over that stuff again. This trailer also works hard to cover up changes to the origin and costume. I definitely get the feeling that the marketing department has listened to the complaints. But are we seeing the real film here, or just a coverup of the stuff they got wrong? Time will tell. I do like the "nighttime Spidey" look to some of it, though the more I look at it, it looks a bit empty.

    Tobey unmasked

Didn't everyone complain about Tobey being unmasked so much in Raimi's movies, now it looks like Spidey is spending about 80% of his time unmasked in this. It looks a lot better, yes, but traiers are cut to look good.

Yeah, nothing really convinced me this is going to be good. Spidey is not Batman. He is actually the complete opposite. Suit looks like shit, Lizard looks terrible and minus some Leary, Sheen and Stone, I am not sold on the cast. Also, no JJJ, I guess they realized no one was going to top Simmons. Its a CGI crapfest with hints of overused hollywood cliches like the umbrellas in the rain and someone looks up. Hellboy used that same fucking scene. Should have brought back Raimi.

    by scratchmonkey

Part 2 of a 2-parter versus the Hulk and just an issue before the death of Gwen Stacy. And this trailer failed to excite me in the way that the trailers for Raimi's first two Spidey movies did so effortlessly. It's not the recasting, the change in direction, the shitty Lizard or the fuck-awful miscasting of Captain Stacy as a Shouty McShout J. Jonah Jameson stand-in. It's the boredom of having the origin - or a stupid-looking variation on it - told all over again. Peter, after 40 years of reading about it and seeing it, I'm fucking **bored** with your origin. I'm fucking bored with Uncle Ben's death and Aunt May's superhuman ability to dodge coffins for all fucking eternity while telling you to wrap up warm and wear a fucking scarf because it's cold outside. Fucking bored beyond belief. I want you to move on from this tedious shit. But they won't let you, will they? No, we've got to go back to the beginning all over again. Even the comics won't let you move on, not with Doughy Quesada in charge. For fuck's sake. Will Uncle Ben die yet again in this film, or are they saving that as an unexpected shock for audiences of 'Amazing Spider-Man 2' in a couple of years' time? Or will they threaten to bump off Oscorp's scientific genius (WTF?) Gwen Stacy in the sequel? Nope, I don't actually give much of a shit, to be honest. I'll give this new attempt at a Spidey series a chance once - or, more likely, **if** - they get past the bits I've already seen versions of multiple times. I doubt they will, though. This reheated shit isn't going to make it as far as a craptastic third entry with 10 superfluous villains. Oh, goody. James Horner's doing the music? I can't wait to hear that fucking metallic clang-clang shit he's been trotting out for nigh on 30 years now.

Notorious Hater Here: This looks a lot better then I previous thought.

    by Dr_PepperSpray

Honestly, if they get the character's right, they can monkey with the plot points and character design all they want.

I have to say, I really like how this is appears to be more nuanced then Raimi's broad colors.

I'm curious though, those who are saying "No... NO NO NO".. why is that, other then they didn't get the design 100% close to the comic (like bitching about the color of hulks stretchy pants which is obviously the most important thing, right) or that you just hate Andrew Garfield, or miss Sam Raimi, or can't see anyone else under that mask but YOU?

Oh, and the Avengers looks like fucking clown shoes. Not in the least bit interested. Sorry kids, but I like my stories with some fucking gravity to them. The comic "The Ultimates" is still the best attempt at getting a big screen Avengers movie right.

  • February 7, 2012 8:43 AM CST

    (sigh)...

    by Sandy

Dear God…here we go again with the “I created him!” baloney. Spider-Man did NOT create the Lizard and had absolutely nothing to do with it. Dr. Connors was experimenting in FLORIDA (not New York) on recreating reptilian limb regeneration and decided to test it on himself to the objections of his wife causing HIMSELF to become the “villain” known as The Lizard. Spider-Man heads to Florida to investigate reports of the Lizard and ends up using Connor’s notes to help restore him. Now, what the hell is wrong with that concept, I have no idea, but apparently there’s generation after generation of moron in Hollywood who think it’s a cool idea to somehow connect the hero and villain so the hero has to repair the damage he (or she) has caused. Great! Only its one of the most cliché concepts out there and should be stopped now. I like the swinging through the streets, the webbing looks great, the smart ass in the cab...all good stuff. But the Lizard looks ridiculous, doesn't have the trademark labcoat (yeah, yeah...but I like the labcoat), Martin Sheen is not Uncle Ben...to me, he's always gonna be Martin Sheen in a Spider-Man movie and the whole nonsense of connecting the hero & the villain is piss poor, creatively bankrupt crap. Speaking of "the Lizard", this movie looks more and more like a Marvel-DC crossover film in which Spidey battles Killer Croc.

  • Seriously it was. If if came out today you would have shit in your seat in disgust. Has an obvious puppet for a main character it for fuck's sake. If anyone ever complains about cg again you're on crack.

Fuck Raimi in his ass. (But I thank him for Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness.)

especially here on aicn where this movie has been shat on more than a gas station toilet seat from the 1st time it was announced. Now it seems the majority are looking forward to seeing the movie or sold. very interesting. Anyway - I'm still cautiously optimistic and willing to give it a chance. Lizard looks like shit though. Needs a snout, needs a white lab coat. Otherwise he's just a killer croc in a spidey movie.

  • That's really my big gripe. That and his extraordinarily fake New York accent. As a NYer, I can tell you that it really doesn't sound quite right. Its like the first X-Men movie when Jackman's Aussie accent used to slip out. Close, but still sounds fake. Not too keen on the whole "untold story" angle, especially when they're redoing the origin. BTW, who also thinks that this should've just been called "Ultimate Spider-Man" instead? Sounds like a more badass title and probably fits better with that continuity.

  • February 7, 2012 9:22 AM CST

    That's a good looking trailer.

    by JonQuixote

I agree with the comments that say there is no sense of joy in the same way that came with the anticipation for the first Raimi movie... but it's just not as fresh. Like the movies or not (I quite like the 2nd, feel the 1st hasn't aged well, and think the third is an awful mess), we got a good-looking Spider-Man that tried very hard to replicate the comic books in many respects (especially the Lee/Romita era). Some visual missteps (such as the Green Goblin), Raimi presented a lot of respect for the character, his origins, and his look and feel. For those of us who hoped for a Spider-Man movie since we were kids... it was like a dream come true. It was similar to the anticipation for Burton's BATMAN, where people were buying tickets for other movies just to see the trailer. Now, with 3 SPIDER-MAN movies in about a decade, there's just no way for this to deliver the same level of anticipation. We could get THE DARK KNIGHT of Spider-Man movies, and it wouldn't deliver on that fervent level. But that doesn't mean it won't be good. It looks good. It looks funny, it looks thoughtful, and it looks like Mark Webb is making a similar effort to replicate certain visuals and textures taken from the source materials. I'm about as excited as I can be for a SPIDER-MAN reboot, 11 years after the first one.

  • They should be ashamed of themselves. Such blatant plagiarism.

  • February 7, 2012 9:23 AM CST

    by SifoDyasJr

I still wish they hadn't fucked with the costume so much.

  • The Spidey suit is too flashy and the dark eyes are less intimidating. Poor design choice. It's just like difference, between Burton's Batman suit and Nolan's...one gets it right and the other just fucks it up. Anyway, like I said, Raimi's films felt too corny and family friendly. I like the idea of a darker Spider-man film, but NOT literally, Mr. Webb! It does look like every action piece happens at night...he's not Batman. Shit, throw in some day-time action. Andrew doesn't look like a Peter Parker. Looks like a reject cast auditioner, from Twilight. And The Lizard...is it really that tough to give him a snout and a fucking labcoat? Please tell me that not all of the Lizard scenes take place at night. I will say that the fight\action scenes look decent . I'm going to see the film, but it does make me mad that Sony wanted to reboot the franchise, so soon and wanting to re-tell or tell this "untold story". Oh and Sony still shouldve aired a Superbowl teaser, for this.

Really? Stop trying to defend this movie here. It won't work. Everybody here thinks they can pull off a better movie, but you never see them trying to do so, it's probably because they fear the Sun. This trailer sucks, Avengers trailer sucks, they all suck except the trailers for Nolan's mediocre Batman movies. This is by far the most negative website out there... NOTHING is ever good enough. They just can't let go of being butt hurt by other comic/sci-fi movies that were truly bad dealing with characters that they like. I'm not saying Amazing Spider-Man will best the best comic book movie of 2012, but at least I reserve judgment until I ACTUALLY see it. But I will say one thing, I am much more looking forward to The Avengers and Amazing Spider-Man than I am TDKR.

Does it really bother you that his mask comes off?

    by melanie seiderman

I don't get why having the mask off during battle would bother people? The issue with Spidey sometimes is being able to relate emotionally to someone who is entirely masked, so it's just a film convention you're gonna have to get used to. Why do you think they do the half-mask/ half-face reveal in the comics?

    Hulk says Movies Change...Grrrr Smash..

    by higgledyhiggles

Audiences have changed, us fatties are no longer relevant. I`ve found myself constantly disappointed with modern movie making. Nothings really crap, but nothings really *Great* either, and i mean truly great in the old sense of the word Great. Not.. `hey dude that movie was great`, `nah man it f`in rocked`. Enjoyment doesn`t equeal greatness. I equate this to good. it removes the black and white polar attitude we all love so much.. The best or worst. there`s some grey goo in the middle you know. And thats todays movies. pretty much middle of the road (especially superhero stuff). Nice filler while it`s there, gone in a couple of months. No need to fret. It`s like a bus, another one will be along in a minute if it dont take you where you want to go.

    by Subtitles_Off

L0vers and H8ters must agree...that is some clichéd shizz. Teen angst and bully jocks. I have to stop him, because I made him. The hero is the bad guy in the eyes of DA LAW. Another effin' bridge and more glowing sciency stuff. The only thing missing is the I still believe in heroes line, but I guarantee that'll be paraphrased half a dozen times in there. Still, some people are bound to be surprised, since expectations have limboed about as low as they can bend. And, it can't possibly end up as stoopid as THE AVENGERS, because, um, nothing could.

That said, those who pointed out that it looks like Ben Affleck's Daredevil movie are spot on. It looks like a sequel to that movie, including the questionable CG-in-the-dark work. As far as how it does, who knows. It probably won't bomb, due to the name recognition, but I can't see this movie setting the world on fire either; the competition is too steep this coming Summer. At best, it does Thor numbers.

  • February 7, 2012 11:17 AM CST

    Not sure why...

    by Tom Fremgen

Supporters of this film have to attack Raimi. It's very possible to like both! Raimi's films were great, and I would have loved to see the 4th one. That said, though I'm worried about this film (as I was Conan and Green Lantern), the trailer looks decent enough.

    The wisecracking Spider-Man is cool

    by Samuel Fulmer

But man, those effects look just as bad as the ones in Rami's first Spider-Man. It doesn't look like anything is really being added (except backstory about his parents to make him more Batman like), so why the redo????

  • February 7, 2012 11:20 AM CST

    @fremgen I agree.

    by TheFifthCylon

It's bullshit that we're getting a reboot (I fucking HATE reboots), but it doesn't look BAD. It's a good trailer, it just simply sucks that we need to see the same storypoints like the origin rehashed yet again. Been there/done that. Now we're treading water. Also, Spider-Man 2 is easily one of the best superhero movies ever made. It's going to be near impossible to top Raimi. All in all...this new movie still does look good.

  • February 7, 2012 11:22 AM CST

Don't really care for the stunt casting either

    by Samuel Fulmer

Sally Field, Martin Sheen, Dennis Leary??? Why not go for no names that can act like they did with Raimi's Spider-Man supporting cast? This is starting to look like an Irwin Allen film.

  • February 7, 2012 11:24 AM CST

    @centilope Raimi's 4th would have been awesome.

    by TheFifthCylon

It's a shame the studio effed him in the a. No matter how good the new one may be, it won't make as much money as a Raimi 4th would have. You can already tell be the indifference this film is being met with by the general public. Still, no matter how poor this does at the box office, I hop Sony commits to this continuity so we don't get another reboot in 2022. Reboots suck balls.

  • ....just due to its existence. The whole point behind TAMS is it was Sony's effort to hang on to the Spidey movie rights and merchandising cut of profits, otherwise they go back to Marvel. The whole effort comes off like the 'licensing deal movie' that it is. It almost doesn't matter what it makes at the box office; Sony gets to hang on to the Spider-Man rights for, what, almost another decade?

    by Orbots Commander

I'm also annoyed that the whole thing seems to take place at night and everything is so darkly lit. Clue to Marc Webb: Spider-Man isn't Batman, and 'darker' doesn't automatically equal, 'more cool'.

  • February 7, 2012 11:52 AM CST

    Boo! Hiss! This trailer sucks!

    by HelveticaConspiracy

Since when did Peter Parker become a hazy looking broomstick with a Jew fro? I'm sorry. Everything about this movie is just WRONG. The 'untold story'?! Who do they think they're kidding?! Fail. Sony must be paying a lot of money to bloggers to post this claptrap. Watch the trailer for Raimi's first SM. Then, watch the trailer for this movie. And, Raimi's was made 12 years ago! And, it STILL looks better.

  • Hopefully these are just unfinished effects shots, because the Spidey swinging around stuff looks just as bad, rubbery, and cartoony as it did in Rami's first film (which it did improve in number 2).

Marvel Needs The Rights To Spidey Back

    by THX1968

Spider-Man is the flagship Marvel character and should be in the control of Marvel Studios. This is most likely the last Spidey Sony will make because the film isn't going to do well. It looks like shit in a summer of serious competition the likes I haven't seen since 1982. The rights will revert to Marvel and then we should see return to form for the character. People complain about the "goofball" quality of Raimi's flicks, but I heard a ton of "goofball" shit in that new trailer! "I created him" - whatever. Is this how Parker develops his sense of responsibility. The thing that annoys me above all else is the fact that this is an unnecessary reboot. There was a time when a studio would weigh their options instead of going straight to the reboot. You don't want to deal with Raimi and McGuire? Fine. Recast the roles and hire a new hot director that won't fuck with the costume. No need to start over, even if ya want to give web shooters - just give them to him.

  • February 7, 2012 12:01 PM CST

Garfield is well cast and Webb is talented.

    by Randy

The screenplay is the important element here, it needs a good story first, I trust the people working on it to deliver the rest. Say what you will about Raimi's film, but it had a damn solid story, well told, paced and had some clever ways to change up the origin. I like the idea that this Parker is going to say more one-liners and be maybe a little more gritty, that's very important.

  • February 7, 2012 12:01 PM CST

    you guys serious?

    by WINONA_RYDERS_PUSSY_JUICE

This looks fucking weak. Why exactly is a guy with 1 romantic comedy in his credits directing one of the top 3(?) franchises on the planet? Shit I forgot, because this is a half-assed low budget reboot so the studio can keep the rights to Spiderman. But I'm confused. Why does this have to be low budget again? Is it because Spiderman films consistently break box office records and rake in over 300 million when directed by a competent director? Why the fuck does this piece of shit even exist? Ya. I think the direction sucks. The actors are wooden and the stupid dialogue isn't helping either. Since when does Dennis Leary come off as an amateur with no charisma or acting ability? Could it be because the director is a hack? I'd rather watch a 3d re release of Spiderman 3.

And with all that, I found a way to enjoy the films on some level... Now.. I dont like the costume or the lizard design too much, but to complain about a missing lab jacket is retarded... "Look guys, I'm still the zany fella you loved from the Evil Dead movies!" I don't think he's made a genuinely heartfelt film in ages, and I can't remember the last of his I really LIKED as opposed to just thinking "it was okay" like the first 2 Spideys. And oh God, Drag Me To Hell was crap. This looks solid, and I like the incorporation of the Ultimate origin to keep things fresh. ...... as I have stated before, the movie industry really dont give 2 shits what the audience wants. All we get is recycled ideas bereft of any originality. What happens is the curiosity factor kicks in and an individuals need to compare to what has preceeded it. Movie companies already have a built in fan base for these forays into "safe" movie making. No real risk. My choice is to see it. I like the spiderman character and nothing I've seen offends me so much I hate it.

Right. Let's not forget that great scene in SM2 on the subway car where they promise not to tell about Spidey losing his mask. You haters baffle me. This movie will make bucketloads.

Have you ever read any of the original Spider Man comics? Peter in the those days could easily pass as a jewish teen on his way to day school. The way Ditko drew him, and his nebbishness back then, all they had to do was throw a yamaka on him to complete it. But since comics back then weren't about religion, it's understandable.

  • That always irks me when they have to show the actor's face like we don't have the capability to imagine the little emo guy is under that mask. Besides that little nitpick, I think it looks really good going by the trailer so far!

    Which is it, Plants?

    by HelveticaConspiracy

You're like, 'You HATERS are judging this movie, and you haven't even SEEN it, yet!! Blaaaargh!!'. On the other hand, you're like, 'This movie is SO much better than Raimi's!! Garfield is SO much better than TOBY!! Blaaaaargh!!'. Uh. You can't have it both ways. Either you say, 'Let's hold off on judging this till we see it.' (Which is a perfectly reasonable request). Or, you say, 'I've made up my mind, I am going to love this movie; no matter how sh*tty it looks.' You simply CANNOT say, 'This IS better than Raimi's!!'. You don't know. You haven't seen it. I can think of MANY trailers that made a movie look better than it was (Reign of Fire, I'm looking @ you). I can think of trailers that SUCKED, but the final product was GREAT (I'm looking @ you, XMen: First Class). So, judging a movie on a trailer is pointless. I HAVE made up my mind, and it's based entirely on the business decisions of the suits @ Sony. Raimi gave Sony, by far, their biggest and most successful (critically and commercially; yes, critically. Look at contemporary critics of the first 2 films. They were over the moon for the movies. A LOT of people were.). Then, after Sony FORCED (look it up) Raimi to include Venom in SM3. Which gave people the sense that SM3 was overstuffed (thus, creating the backlash). However, SM3 was HUGELY successful ($900m worldwide; 3.25 x it's budget.). Then, Sony got greedy. Didn't want to pay for their more successful franchise. They just wanted the money. So, they fire Raimi. Hire a cheapo director. Hire cheapo actors. Give it some 'dark', 'edgy' veneer. Then, pay tons of money to soil Raimi's name (look it up). And, give tons of schwag to movie sites, so they give your scab production (yes, scab) positive reviews. It's a sickly cash grab. I don't care how JOKEY this 'SpiderTween' is. It's still a cash grab by Sony. And, Garfield looks dumb. Sorry, he does. I will allow anyone their thoughts about a film. But, don't sit here and scream at people who don't share your 'enthusiasm'. The film does look cheap. And, Sony DID act like a bunch of a holes. I'll never forgive them for it. And, a lot of others won't either. Now get back to work, Plants. Ok my opinion...

    by Brigon

I was condemning this film up until ten minutes ago, but this trailer has made me take notice. Negatives However the costume still sucks. Peter is meant to be nerdy in high school. Garfield doesn't seem particularly nerdy from this trailer. I'm not really seeing any chemistry between Garfield and Stone either though maybe the film will improve it. Spider-man would never sit in a car and chat to a car thief. It completely negates his main advantage (his agility). What if that criminal turned round and shot at him, where could he possibly dodge to he would have no space to move around. More scenes with Spidey without his mask after all the criticism in the previous films.... Positives Wisecracks are in (thats a good thing) Peter is building gadgets. As well as the web-shooters I think that was a Spider-tracer we saw in the trailer??? Action looks good, and seems that there will be more shown of Spider-man than Peter Parker. I really like the Spider-man being a fugitive from the Police plot, and it does seem to be a major plot point. I would have loved to see a full movie based around it. Sadly I fear that this movie is going to be diluted by too many plots just like Spider-man 3. Let's count them (Lizards origin, Spider-man's origin, Romance sub-plot, Police hunting Spider-man, Peter learning about his parents). Captain Stacy made me really interested in this film

Nice, nice, NOT THRILLING but nice

    by Dennis Chimelis

Maybe it's just me but I didn't see anything new here. Sure, new actors, new suit, new villain but -- nothing NEW. It's going to take a bit more than a few wisecracks and Emma Stone to get my money. Not gonna hate but this isn't on my list of 'must see' movies for the summer.

  • I kinda wish the people who are having text-brain-aneurysms as they froth at the mouth that "OMG! THIS IS ABOUT MONEYZ!!!!!!" It's a superhero franchise. Do you think any sort of superhero movie ever made in the history of anything was about artistic integrity or money? Raimi got fired because people really didn't like Spider-Man 3, Spider-Man 3 was the most expensive movie ever made when it really didn't need to be, and they all wanted a crazy increase in salaries for Spider-Man 4 which they did not deserve. And it had the Vulturess. So he got the boot.

drstrangelove, no actually GL and Apes panned out as expected

    by Jaster Mareel

From teh very beginning there was trepidation about Ryan playing Hal and the special effects were chief among complaints. Personally i thought Ryan did a pretty good job but he did not play the character as earnestly as he is in comics. Strangely the main problem with the film is that it's too dark and semi-disgusting. I don't think we saw that coming. I think we all loved Apes as soon as we saw the first trailer and everything we kept seeing made it look better and better. Of course the real charm of that film is Serkis' Caesar. John Lithgow also did a phenominal job with the little screentime he had.

Never seen so many plants, this thread feels like a jungle!

    by Franck

In the meantime, I honestly think that Parker is miscast (others will say he is cast for the target audience, which obviously is the one that was too young to watch the Raimi editions), this trailer doesn't show me anything different, all together feels like a teenage nerdy Spidey with issues, no balls, he almost cries at every shot in the trailer. One day, we'll have a darker Spiderman, with an adult Peter Parker, tough and cynical, just the way he should be. Give it to Nolan or any director with brain and vision. Oh, and fuck you plants, you're so obvious it's pathetic.

    RE: Lizard

    by jorson28

'Haven't watched the trailer yet, but wanted to remind everyone that even though LATER comics had both the lab coat AND the gator teeth and jaws, the actual physicality of the lizard based on the first artwork released is closer to the original Ditko design. Get one of the Spider-Man collections and look at the cover for the Lizard's first appearance. Yeah, the lab coat is missed, but Ditko's original lizard did not have really big teeth or jaws.

    by Jay

from the 3rd movie. How fucking narrow minded can you be when you purposely decide to ignore the two previous films because you want to like the reboot more. It's no different than what happened to the X-Men. After the 3d movie, all of a sudden the franchise was considered horrible by nerds. Talk about a short attention span. Oh, and the CGI in this trailer looks awful. If you're seriously complaining about the CG in Raimis but find this new trailer "fine", than you're more delusional than I though.

    by wrx

I went to that Spider-Man event in los angeles, and frankly i was blown away. This movie, marc webb's vision looks like it was done with a great love for the character and i see NOTHING to complain about. this could be one of the best superhero films ever. They really got Spidey right and that costume sure looks pretty good in motion. I just don't understand what some of you could have possibly wanted that looks better than this on a trailer. I really don't give a fuck how the lizard looks. what will the performance be like? looks to me like they've got it right so far. Whatever changes they have to make to tell this story, go for it. I'm intrigued. Also i thought it was cool when Garfield said that it was an honor to play spider-Man, and he mentioned Toby Maguire then added that he hoped that the next take on spider-man would cast a half -black, half-latino actor. I'm definitely in line for this one

    This movie looks pretty good.

    by JackSlater4

I loved all3 Spiderman movies, especially part 3. I will miss the Evil Dead style action but Raimi has other stories to tell. I like 500 Days of Summer when I finally saw it because I had no interest initially. Comics have always rebooted themselves, every time the artist and storyline changes it feels like a reboot. I have no problem with continuous reboots, but we need to lay off the origin retellings. Batman Begins proved how nice it was to get Batman's origin, Batman proved we didn't need it. And in all honesty, as good as Batman Begins was, and as much as I like the Nolan movies, they still didn't get the origin right. They implied Bruce already had some training but that the League of Shadows really tightened his skills. There is room for improvement there so I could eventually go for another Batman origin story.

    To jorson28 RE: Lizard

    by Mako

True. But even Ditko's version of the head was better. The eyes were more spread apart. There was a small muzzle where the nostrils were also more spread apart making him look less human. This Ditko observation would suffice if the rest of his body matched the Ditko version - but it doesn't. The legs don't match. The feet. The claws. Even the stance which makes him look way more like a creature stalking than a human. But you give him a human head? WTF!! It would also be fine if the rest of the movie looked like it did back in 1960's - but it doesn't. It's all up to date and modern. So why can't The Lizard's head be too? The Lizard is all about losing humanity and letting the animal inside take over. Keeping his "humanoid" like face doesn't help do that. It doesn't make The Lizard look like a bad ass foil for Spider-Man. It makes him look stupid. The design of the body does not match the head or the animation of his body. I'll play devil's advocate and wait for the final film - but seeing some of the climax of the film in the trailer - and seeing that The Lizard's head still look humanoid - is just a bad artistic decision IMO.

    I'm actually sold.

    by Briannicus

Despite the altered origin story and the change of The Lizard's appearance, I still feel that this is closer to the Spider-Man that I grew up with. We have a Spidey who doesn't mumble and who isn't moping about the whole time. I like the fact that he wise-cracks, I also like the fact that they play on the concept of being an intelligent scientific mind (much like he was in the comics) The Costume works well on screen and the action-beats look like they may be quite visceral. I like the fact that the movie actually looks like it takes place in New york City. New York is not all bright and shiny, some areas are quite grimy and ill lit and this showcases that aspect.

    by JackSlater4

Hipsters are a subculture of men and women typically in their 20's and 30's that value independent thinking, counter-culture, progressive politics, an appreciation of art and indie-rock, creativity, intelligence, and witty banter. The greatest concentrations of hipsters can be found living in the Williamsburg, Wicker Park, and Mission District neighborhoods of major cosmopolitan centers such as New York, Chicago, and San Francisco respectively. Although "hipsterism" is really a state of mind,it is also often intertwined with distinct fashion sensibilities. Hipsters reject the culturally-ignorant attitudes of mainstream consumers, and are often be seen wearing vintage and thrift store inspired fashions, tight-fitting jeans, old-school sneakers, and sometimes thick rimmed glasses. Both hipster men and women sport similar androgynous hair styles that include combinations of messy shag cuts and asymmetric side-swept bangs. Such styles are often associated with the work of creative stylists at urban salons, and are usually too "edgy" for the culturally-sheltered mainstream consumer. The "effortless cool" urban bohemian look of a hipster is exemplified in Urban Outfitters and American Apparel ads which cater towards the hipster demographic. Despite misconceptions based on their aesthetic tastes, hipsters tend to be well educated and often have liberal arts degrees, or degrees in maths and sciences, which also require certain creative analytical thinking abilities. Consequently many hipsters tend to have jobs in the music, art, and fashion industries. It is a myth that most hipsters are unemployed and live off of their parent's trust funds. Hipsters shun mainstream societal conventions that apply to dating preferences and traditional "rules" of physical attraction. It is part of the hipster central dogma not to be influenced by mainsream advertising and media, which tends to only promote ethnocentric ideals of beauty. The concepts of androgyny and feminism have influenced hipster culture, where hipster men are often as thin as the women they date. The muscular and athletic all-American male ideal is not seen as attractive by confident and culturally-empowered hipster women who instead view them as symbols of male oppression, sexism, and misogyny. Likewise, culturally-vapid sorority-type girls with fake blond hair, overly tanned skin, and "Britney Spears tube-tops" are not seen as attractive by cultured hipster males who instead see them as symbols of female insecurity, low self-esteem, and lack of cultural intelligence and independent thinking. Hipsters are also very racially open-minded, and the greatest number of interracial couples in any urban environment are typically found within the hipster subculture. Although hipsters are technically conformists within their own subculture, in comparison to the much larger mainstream mass, they are pioneers and leaders of the latest cultural trends and ideals. For example, the surge of jeans made to look old and worn (i.e. "distressed"), that have become prevalent at stores such as The Gap, American Eagle, Abercrombie and Fitch, and Hollister, were originally paraded by hipsters who shopped in thrift stores years before such clothing items were mass produced and sold to the mainstream consumer. The true irony here is that many of the detractors of hipster culture are in fact unknowingly following a path that hipsters have carved out years before them. This phenomena also applies to music as well, as many bands have become successful and known to mainstream audiences only because hipsters first found and listened to them as early-adopters of new culture. Once certain concepts of fashion and music have reached mainstream audiences, hipsters move on to something new and improved. Because of the rise of various online photo-blog and social networking sites, insights into urban hipster culture is reaching sheltered suburban audiences at an exponential rate. Cultural "norms" have been deconstructed by hipster culture as a whole. Hipsterism is often dismissed as just an image thing by some, but the culture as a whole is effecting changes in society, leading to feelings of insecurity and resentment in people who are no longer a part of the cultural ruling class. For example, a lot of anti-hipster sentiment evidently comes from culturally-clueless suburban frat boy types who feel that the more sensitive, intelligent, and culturally aware hipster ideal threatens their insecure sense of masculinity. Anti-hipster sentiment often comes from people who simply can't keep up with social change and are envious of those who can.

Anyway, it looks pretty damn good

    by Kammich

My largest concern is the emphasis on retelling the origin. I get the "Untold story" thing, and how the marketing revolves around that. But there still seems to be a lot of carry-over from Raimi's origin... seeing him fight Flash in the hallway, up against a locker, is going to warrant an eye-roll. But I'm digging everything else. The suit looks cool in motion. The web-swinging and hand-to-hand combat looks kinetic and high octane. The quips we hear in the trailer are spot-on. Love the chemistry between Garfield and Stone, and it looks like the supporting cast has a chance to really shine... Leary and Ifans especially, were outside-the-box choices that now seem like no-brainers. I'm definitely getting a "Batman Begins" vibe throughout the thing. Not necessarily in tone, but in the way its delving into an otherwise unexplored part of the character's backstory(Bruce's training=/=Peter's parents disappearing), using a lesser-known baddie as the principal villain, setting up a love story where the damsel loves the man and not the hero, etc. If this movie can manage to be 75% as good as 'Begins,' I'll be happy. Because then Webb can give us his "Dark Knight," hopefully. Completely unrestrained by the confines of establishing the new mythos, and free to bust out Norman, Harry, JJJ, Gwen on the bridge, etc.

    by Kammich

I still really have no idea what that means, but I at least appreciate the insight. I wear thrift store hoodies and old sneakers. Is it because I'm a hipster? No, its because I'm fucking broke. I mean give me a break. It's starting to become quite the irritatingly lame comic book movie trope.

It really comes down to not wanting to pay Raimi and crew what they're worth and initiating a competing project without notice to the principal players. Even if this turns out to be a great movie, it's still got a seriously shitty stigma to it. I'm not down with it, and I never have been. I do not find any vengeful pleasure in the fact that it looks like a huge steaming pile, but I do want vindication for Raimi. The guy has been a favorite of mine for a long, long time. I put him at the same level as his buddies, the Coen Bros. Watch "A Simple Plan" again - what a great fucking movie. And I will defend Raimi's Spidey films because they work so well as movies and they are damn fun. Hell, Raimi has always been a damn fanboy favorite, but the young ones have turned on him or never realized how awesome he really is.

This was posted by @wrx - "Also i thought it was cool when Garfield said that it was an honor to play spider-Man, and he mentioned Toby Maguire then added that he hoped that the next take on spider-man would cast a half -black, half-latino actor. I'm definitely in line for this one" --- WTF! What a bunch of crap. I hope that the next Spider-Man is half-black, half-latino??? Who says shit like that? Where does that even come from??? A PR Rep is where it fucking comes from. A PR Rep that picked up a recent copy of Ultimate Spider-Man.

First off... looks promising, HOWEVER I'll buy that he can stick through his suit if his feet are covered by a thin layer of breathable material (maybe microhairs like Spiderman 2099 comic) but not through a pair of thick rubber-soled sneakers. They do such a good job designing awesome thin high-tensile webbing (unlike Raimi's stupid industrial cable spider-trampoline in the park), and then blow it with that oversight. Gah! And I'm glad Lizard can actually get hit and feel it - in Raimi's you can apparently punch Doc Oc in the face several times and neither break his sunglasses nor a tooth.

    by steverogers5

I think this will be a lot better than the Raimi films. Not too fond of what they done, with the Lizard, Including the casting, but the rest looks solid. Glad the quips are in. Pretty much a defining characteristic of Spiderman. The mask coming off thing did bother me in Raimi's films, but after seeing it in this trailer and not being so bothered by it, I think I'm finally realising that the reason it bothered me was because Tobey MacGuire was so fucking awefully miscast in those films, that when the mask came off I couldn't see him as Spiderman anymore, just some slow pathetic moronic dweeb wearing a spiderman suit. Whereas Garfield here, does actually seem like a believable Peter Parker, and certainly looks and moves more like the character. By the way whatever asshole that said that everybody's examples of things wrong with the original trilogy all came from the third flick, well 4 four words for you:- Power Rangers Green Goblin. I think that's something everybody can agree was a bad idea. But if you really want to get a bit deeper into what was wrong with Raimi's Spiderman. I'll give you a great example from the movie so many of you try to elevate to a perfect level, when it's nothing of the sort:- Spiderman 2. When Peter's been losing his powers, he sees an old man getting beaten up by some youths and he SLINKS away, without even trying to intervene, like a total fucking coward. Which to me demonstrates a major misunderstanding of the character by Raimi. The Spidey of the comics and cartoons has lost his powers on many, many occasions and still went up against SUPER POWERED villains, using his smarts and bravery to defeat them. But Raimi and Tobey's Parker just shambles away, from a few youths, because boo hoo, he's lost his powers?!? After what happened to his Uncle Ben, there's no way Peter would let something like that happen again. He would intervene, even if it meant he got a total kicking. I mean jeez, even when he has got his powers he's took on the likes of cosmic powered characters like Firelord and Thanos and even the likes of the Juggernaut or the Hulk who way overpower him. I've mentioned this on a couple of talkbacks, and of course there's never been a hater yet who's been able to justify this scene. Raimi made the character a fucking coward. And that was what was unforgivable about those films. Nuff said!

    Garfield's acting ability

    by Kirk Gostkowski

I have visited this site everyday for years and have never posted. But the day has come to break my silence. Every time there is an article about this movie I see the same comments about Andrew Garfield's acting chops. It's almost the same comments every time. It has to be a plant. Where the fuck are these acting chops that I hear everyone talking about? Where? Because acting chops to me mean range. And this guy has managed to give the same exact boring performance in everything he's done. Oh as the sidekick guy in Social Network? Oh wait he got pissy and threw a computer. Oh brilliant! How brilliant! The next De Niro! Fuck you. Oh wait for you brilliant judges of acting out there what about that scene in Never Let Me Go where he cried and shouted in the rain! That must be what acting is all about right! Crying and screaming in the rain? They used it to sell the movie it was so endearing! That overacting-cringe inducing performance. Casting him was a bad choice. You want to start fresh with Peter in High School? Cast an unknown who isn't pushing 30. And stop casting fucking Brits just because they are British in these big roles. It doesn't make them unknown because they have to struggle with a dialect through a whole film. Cast an American or just someone who deserves it. Oh he can do a dialect that must mean he can act? right? Please... (and that doesn't mean everyone Bale and Hardy being examples of stellar actors from abroad) Hey I hope he proves me wrong. He's just getting started. But don't talk about his acting ability based off of nothing. I saw the preview yesterday. Everything just happened to look great- except for him. If you fuckers want to talk about chops you better be talking about someone like Penn, De Niro, Pacino, Nicholson not some fucking guy who has done the same thing for the few movies he's been in.

    Sam Raimi

    by Kirk Gostkowski

Sam Raimi managed to change the way this industry works with Spider-man. Along with Tim Burton and Richard Donner, Raimi managed to make superheroes possible. And I'd argue no one has done more to change the face of film that Raimi has in the past decade. He changed what we expect from our superhero movies. By putting his vision and sweat into making us believe a man a teenager from Queens could swing above New York and have a heart. This new movie was a cash grab and a slap in the face to a man who made these people a lot of money. And in turn, tinkered with his creative process and forced him to compromise, especially with the last film because they just know better. All these douche bags in suits who have never had a clue to begin with. Good luck to this new movie. The footage I saw looks promising. Leary is the best choice by far in what I saw. But show some fucking respect for the man who made Spider-man possible. And changed the way movies are made and box offices are judged. For you shitheads that forget so easily America looked to fiction to overcome a really trying time that summer and they had an answer with Peter Parker.

  • February 7, 2012 9:42 PM CST

Just NOT feeling this at all. I don't care!

    by Joey_Redballs

I was so excited for a Spider-Man movie, that when Spider-Man 1 came out, I saw it 4 times. I saw Spider-Man 2 twice. I saw Spider-Man 3 one time, at a midnight premier. I am officially spent. I wanted a Lizard movie, continued from the existing franchise, not another damn origin movie. The comics had a mysterious Parker parents storyline, and it SUCT! Maybe Raimi originally intended for The Lizard to be a villain in Spider-Man 3, then the idiotic Avi Arad forced him to use Venom. I don't get why Raimi's Spider-Man 4 was going to feature The Vulture and The Black Cat, but still...no Lizard. Now we get this Lizard that looks more like The Scorpion. BOO! Sony crapt in my cornflakes...again! (I'm talking about you PSN).

    by garagons

It wasn't his choice to be a spaz, he just didn't know how to be anything else. Therefore, once he gets his powers, he doesn't know their value... Not some maladjusted angry kid with abandonment issues. Raimi; cheesy and corny as he was, got that right. Until spider-man 2.

Quit the fucking whining about reboots

    by DoctorZoidberg

How many times have heroes been rebooted in the comics themselves? Reboots come along with a classic story. Should we shit over the next director that reboots "Hamlet"? Who but the most rabid obnoxious fanboy (like 90% of you here) would ever go see a Spidey story with Madam Web and the Scarlet Spider story lines? They need to appeal to the broadest base possible. This will be a fun 2 hours in a theater on a hot summer day. That is all it is supposed to be. If you are counting on a superhero movie to redefine your week, let alone your life....well I don't know where to even start with you. If you are too sophisticated to enjoy this movie, then you should be too sophisticated to log on and start pissing in somebody else's soup. Now suck my balls.

    Schizoschizo

    by Kirk Gostkowski

Thanks for the link. Although the sizzle reel kind of is what I'm talking about. It's a lot of anger or crying without the reality in between. And I have to say I see him straining to get through the dialect. Look I don't post on here because I don't want to dump on somebody publicly and Ive been completely hypocritical by doing just that. Because I have such strong opinions I usually don't share them via the Internet. Yeah I saw Parnassus too. I didn't like him at all in that one actually. He is just very middle of the road actory. Like straight out of his scene study class. I have yet to see a film where he develops a true character arch and doesn't just play the same role throughout or just rely on emotion to get through a performance. I guess I could say that about all of the actors that are getting chance after chance lately and don't have the craft to deserve the opportunities thrown their way. I think that's my real issue to be honest. People are throwing around praise on guys like Channing Tatum who is like watching cement dry. I wouldn't put Garfield in that arena but I certainly think he has a lot to prove before he earns these accolades he has been so easily been given. I'd say his real test is going to be when he is on Broadway as Biff in Death of A Salesman coming up. If he doesn't manage to cry and shout his way through that production and hold his own up there on the boards with Hoffman then I will stand completely corrected. What I saw of his Peter Parker in the scene with Gwen especially, was a lot of bad decisions. Harry above said he was shy. Nope. She should have the power in that scene. He is too confident. It's wrong. It looked to me like that was the first time they set up a date and he really doesn't seem to be sweating it too much. And that choice might end up with the director but ultimately it just shows how there is no difference between the way he plays Spider-man and Peter. They are two different characters. You can see it in the awful doorman line in the trailer- thats a Spider-man delivery of that line when it should be Parker. Shy. Not snappy grinning bullshit. Snappy is Spidey.

    by Subtitles_Off

Hipster likes Band X. Band X gets buzz offa hipster-like. Band X makes album with the douche who produces Coldplay. Hipster betrayed. Band X gets Rolling Stone cover. Simpletons begin claiming to love Band X. Hipster moves on to something else. Band X becomes an embarrassment. Nobody listens to Band X anymore, not even their earlier hipster-cred stuff.

here is the Urban Dictonary definition (lol)

    by WINONA_RYDERS_PUSSY_JUICE

hipster 66364 up, 16207 down Hipsters are a subculture of men and women typically in their 20's and 30's that value independent thinking, counter-culture, progressive politics, an appreciation of art and indie-rock, creativity, intelligence, and witty banter. A conversation outside a hipster bar in downtown NYC: Frat Boy #1: Dude, are you having any luck picking up chicks in there? Frat Boy #2: Man...I haven't experienced anything like this before. These chicks are totally rejecting me and going for all these hipster guys in tight pants and shaggy hair instead. Frat Boy #1: Maybe we should head back up to that bar in Murry Hill where you hooked up with that drunk b*tch from Alpha Sigma Phi last week? Frat Boy #2: Yeah...I don't think we have what it takes to compete with these guys in here. These hipster chicks won't even give us the time of the day!

    by ZodNotGod

Part 2 for some reason sails way above and works most of the time. Not a fan of Tubby McGuire, he's an art-house goon actor by nature and his weepy, whussy performance shows that. Spidey is known for his smarts and great sense of humor, McGuire never really conveyed either convincingly. Kirstin Dunst- Ugh. Dead-eyed, stoned, nasty hag with dead weeds for hair was a colossial miscast. Rami never knows when to scale it back. He's always over-the-top; comedy, the action, but also the look is cheap. In part 1, when Gobblin attacks, it looks too fake to the point of it being distracting. Worse than anything in SUPERMAN THE MOVIE or SM2. Way worse. Garfield, who knows? Looks the part, sounds the part.

  • February 8, 2012 9:52 AM CST

i find the whole " Garfield looks the part " fascinating.

    by Subtitles_Off

I've read a lot of comic books. Some of them Spider-Man comic books. Missed the ones where he looked like a scrawny dork with a giant nose. I'm not hating on Garfield. He might turn out to be the next, um, Leonardo DiCaprio. If you say he " looks " the part, you're seeing something I don't. I didn't think Tobey looked it, either. Maybe I gotta get my eyes checked.

    by Subtitles_Off

I dunno, though. The Black Keys have always been a bit-too AC-DCish for hipsters. The Black Keys were only ever really " hip " to peeps who hadn't been " hip " to White Stripes for years already. They're " hip " in the same way Kings of Leon were " hip. " The backlash is all Wilco's for the taking.

    Planty Mc plant

    by wrx

No, THX1968 i'm not a plant. I work in a high school library where i can order all the graphic novels i want to and read to my hearts content. I grew up reading Marvel, and i still do. i have an open mind and optimism for just about any comic book movie because when i was a kid most of this didn't exist. My point was that i thought it was cool that garfield said that because he was referring to the Miles Morales character which i'm currently enjoying. My girlfriend is new to comics but enjoy's ultimate spider-man too. She likes miles' mom because she resembles her a bit and the character's dialogue really sounds like things she says to our family from time to time. It made me think how different takes on a character in movies is not necessarily a bad thing, just like comic books. It's weird to me that so many people are trashing this because i can't seem to see what's so bad looking about it. Am i supposed to hate it because you all say so? If i enjoy it and no one else on earth does, fuck it.

  • February 8, 2012 11:50 AM CST

Movie-wise, none of this stuff " existed when I was a kid " either.

    MaxCherry..Oh I understood it fine..

    by steverogers5

And you neatly sidestepped the whole issue, because obviously you can't answer it.. That scene in Spiderman 2 where Tobey's Peter slinks away to let an old guy possibly get beaten to death, is nothing to do with him wanting to give up being spiderman to be with Mary Jane. He didn't give it up until he lost his powers in the movie. (Thus, what Raimi is effectively saying, is that the powers make the hero, and not the guy he is underneath) So how did you miss the plot point of him losing his powers? You must misunderstand a lot of movies if you missed that. My point which you ignored, beacuse you can't answer it, is that Raimi made him a coward in that scene. Powers or no powers, Just about anyone, who was in Peters shoes in that situation would have done something. Hell I would have tried something, and I'm sure most decent minded folk here would have too. And Peter, given what happened to his Uncle Ben, should be the absolute last person in the world to walk away from that situation, given what happened to him the last time he did so. It's a fundamental misunderstanding of the character. He's supposed to be a hero, not a fucking, timid little toad of a coward!

    by Paulisius

Is there really a good reason to label the representatives of a production company as... what did you say? Fucktards? Is it really necessary? At any rate, I'd like to poke a hole in your allegation of lazy writing. This is THE origin story. Gwen Stacy was around LONG before that screaming red-headed "America Friendly" tart, Mary Jane. Gwen Stacy was the sacrificial lamb. I think of lazy writing as developing Spidey with biological spinners. No need to keep track of the ...forgive me ... Web content. That is truly lazy. Lazy writing is EVERYTHING Raimi did, or let happen. it was hokey, 2 dimensional, and without apologies. Too bad. Cause now the world wants more Spiderman, but can't agree on how to do it. Sony took a BOLD step, and said "Screw Raimi. We're gonna do it again, and this time right." Sometimes it's a bad idea to let the director talk you into an idea like Spiderman 3. The claim of laziness is all on the Raimi films. This looks complex, and dynamic. This looks to be a real super-hero story with a genuine origin story. Now cool it on the f-bombs, would you? They reduce your argument, and make your statements unreadable. You're better than that. ...I hope.

    Comic book faithfulness...

    by Finn

Does. not. matter. For every comic purist on here, there are 1,000 people who just want a good movie and have never read the comics. Source material like this will never outweigh what works best with masses e.g. Going maskless to connect more emotionally with the masses. Fans matter because they're the loudest both in praising and bitchiness, but at the end of the day the studio only cares what gets non-fans to fork over $15 opening weekend.

  • This is true if you are a Hollywood Studio Exec. But, if you love film and care about good films none of that shit matters! That said, I agree that fanboys crying over minute details that are changed in the film is meaningless. But, we are not discussing minor changes or changes that don't matter or changes that are an improvement. This redesign of the Lizard is not an improvement. Also, it is derivative of many creature designs we have seen before. Most recently Voldemort in Harry Potter. So, honestly, if the sole reason they made this change is because the films that this creature design is derived from made bank at the B.O., well, they can go f*ck themselves!
