Ready for MACHETE KILLS, the reteaming of Robert Rodriguez and Danny Trejo?!?!

Published at:  Feb 06, 2012 9:57:56 PM CST

Hey folks, Harry here...   Deadline broke the news that Rodriguez is shooting a sequel to MACHETE called MACHETE KILLS...  the second of an announced trilogy that Rodriguez is planning.   This will be the next Rodriguez helmed film.  I haven't spoken with Robert about the film yet, but I'm hoping that it isn't a direct sequel, but rather a completely different type of MACHETE adventure.   Like those old DJANGO flicks or MAN WITH NO NAME films.   Or even Robert's own DESPERADO series.    It sounds like Robert won't be co-directing this one, like he did with Ethan Maniquis on MACHETE.   And that's encouraging to me.   I would love to see the Machete series kicked up several knotches - to being a more intense version of Machete's world.  Since he's going to be working for the U.S. Government on a mission, watching Trejo become his own particular BOND or FLINT would be awfully cool.   With an April start, I'm thinking this will probably be a 2013 release.   Curious to find out more.

I had such high hopes for the last one... I was rooting for a crazy over the top action film but what I got instead was crappy ill-thought out political message crap.

Oh and creepy porker Steven Seagal with fake semi-nudity from Jessica Alba.

  • Rod, along w/ his peers Fincher, PTA, et al. is doing what he can to improve as a film maker. He and QT really do make a great pair. They have so much in common. Neither has the balls to make great strides in their careers.

Of course Harry and co. know this but would never call them out.

I figured someone would question that "big name" part.

Still, I'd say the casual moviegoer probably knew who De Niro, Seagal, Don Johnson, Cheech Marin, and Lindsay Lohan were. It doesn't necessarily mean they're draws- just recognizable to a mass audience.

    Machete kills again...in Space!

    by aftermath

I was very disappointed in "Machete". After that cool opening sequence, the movie just fell apart. Terrible story and dialogue and not in a "Grindhouse" way...

Rodriguez just needs to go crazy and hardcore, with this new one. No more political stuff. No more stupid gags.

Just make a dark, more serious-toned film.

I hope Jessica Alba and Michelle Rodriguez are back.

As for new actors, Rodriguez should get:

    Antonio Banderous
    Ron Perlman
    Jason Stathem
    Benicio Del Toro
    Christopher Walken
    Bruce Willis
    Eva Mendes
    Luis Guzman
    Johnny Depp
    Selma Hiyack
    Samuel L. Jackson
    Ving Rhames

the ONLY reason why I liked Machete

    by yourstepdaddy

was because of the cast... the sequel better live up to the previous' movies cast by hiring outta work 70s/80s actors, washed up greats, and pretty ladies who arent afraid to go fully naked (the last part isnt a requirement, but if youre gonna be naked, be naked for real Jess)

He won't, of course, because he's too afraid of ending up like anyone who bad mouths the cartels: stuffed inside a stack of old tires and burned alive. No no, I'm sure the American corrupt lawmen will be the bad guys again... just wait and see.

Where was the Philipino martial art Escrima in the movie?

    by yamayama

For a movie that sold its USP on a bladed weapon the lack of martial art skills in the movie was really lame.

If and when there is a sequel we need to see some Kali and Escrima skills in the sequel.

If its good enough for Ghostdog then its good enough for Machete.

  • in the sense that it featured too much talking. The problem with THAT was that the talking wasn't Tarantino level dialogue and DEFINITELY wasn't acted on a Tarantino level. The whole thing felt under-cooked to me, but I guess hearing that it was co-directed, that's where I feel that lack of focus comes from.

And there were clearly not enough boobs, especially considering the talent involved.

    by cobra--kai

The trailer was great fun but the film...

It really did get old fast. Just felt like scenes had all been amateurishly slapped on screen without any regard for creating a coherent whole - particularly the big finale. Just ended up feeling like a pointless, stoopid mess.

Rodriguez could definitely improve with a sequel but needs to watch some Walter Hill, watch DRIVE, watch HEAT. Sometimes less is more.

    Reply to Talkback

  • and just put every idea that's in his head up on screen in one movie. It doesn't have to make sense or flow like a regular movie. I just want Danny Trejo in as many crazy scenes as possible. Like CEMETARY MAN or something.

  • Machete was entertaining but Hobo with a shotgun was a far better postmodern, tongue-in-cheek exploitation film and I'd rather see a sequel to that than another machete film.

I'm excited for this one. If Rodriguez is actually directing and not half-assing it like with Predators and the first Machete, this could up there with Planet Terror. Here's hoping. But it needs a tighter script, less political b.s., and more jumping out windows swinging on intestines.

    by blue_demon

...and then the movie came out. Lord, that was one boring, messy waste of time. And whoever said that Machete should go after the cartels is right. They have turned a beautiful country into a violent cesspool. Maybe Machete can capture some cartel hitman and make him talk and start fighting his way up the ladder until he gets the head of the Sinaloa cartel.

Naaahhh...let's have him go after those dangerous, vile roving bands of white guys at the border.
