Oh, Wizard!! Here's THE PHANTOM MENACE Super Bowl Spot!!

Merrick here...

There was a new spot for the 3D release of STAR WARS EPISODE I: THE PHANTOM MENACE, which hits theaters this Friday.

Many fans are vehemently asserting that they won't shell out to see this one on the big screen once more -  but I wonder if those folks will truly be able to  resist once the opportunity arrives?

I know I'll be there - admittedly begrudgingly.  But the Geek in me just has to experience Poodoo in 3D.  Which is something the recent HAROLD AND KUMAR movie sorta did as well...and is unquestionably what 3D was created for.

I know, you all said that you won't see it, but you said the same about buying the Blu Ray box, right before it became the most sold Blu Ray ever!

I'll see it, but I'll feel dirty about it

    by Domi'sInnerChild

My five-year-old is a Star Wars nut and even he seemed a little uncomfortable about it (he doesn't like 3D either, but he said something to the extent of if he HAD to see something in 3D, it probably should be this). My small victory is I'll use free passes.

The freaking pod race put me to sleep. I doubt the 3d conversion will make it any less snoozeworthy.

    All of them?

    by Gryph

So...last I heard they were going to "see how fans responded" or something after the release of TPM before committing to releasing the whole series. I seem to remember a lot of shouty fanboy talk at the time, but this trailer seems to promise all of them. Did they change their position somewhere along the way?

  • Feb. 6, 2012, 10:35 a.m. CST

Going and actually looking forward to it...

    by Dranem

Never really hated the Phantom Menace as a whole, just elements of it (which have been discussed ad nauseum already). And this has definitely been the prequel that has grown in my mind the most over the years. It still feels the most Star Warsy, but of the prequels Revenge of the Sith is still the best. This still has some of my favorite moments in the entire saga, including my favorite "little" moment where Darth Maul is backing into the Theed Palace reactor area and he flicks something at the door to open it as Obi Wan and Qui Gon follow him in.

  • Feb. 6, 2012, 10:36 a.m. CST

My six year old wants to see it.

    by lochkray

That will give me enough excuse. The reality is, for the next six years, I will go to each and every one, with him and likely his younger brother. And those times will likely be the last times that I see those movies in theatre. Ever. That's not some bitter promise. Just a reality. I know so many hate the prequels, but seeing Star Wars movies in the theatre is still a special thing to me. That's how they are meant to be viewed. 3-D and a six year olds wish will just give it enough of a twist to make it seem less painful to shell out the money. But hell, I've already paid to see A New Hope in the theatre seven times over the years, why not one last time in 2015. And, while we're at it, might as well watch the others too. Greedo shooting first, Jar Jar Binks, Hold Me Like on Naboo, Blinking Ewoks, and all.

I skipped the Blu-Rays and I'll skip these too, but there's no doubt that it's gonna make Lucas yet another fortune.

  • Feb. 6, 2012, 10:39 a.m. CST

I'll be there! I'll see it!

    by vadakinX

Screw you all, I like The Phantom Menace. My abiding memory of watching that film for the first time was that it got a standing ovation at the end. Is it flawed? Absolutely. But it's also a hell of a lot of fun. People who like the film generally tend to point to Qui-Gon Jinn and Darth Maul as the stand-out characters. And they are great. But for me the best character in that film is Palpatine. He only has a few scenes but my god is he brilliant. Palpatine in the prequels is the epitome of what's great about George Lucas as a storyteller. In fact I would argue that the overall arc of the prequels is better than that of the original trilogy. Where the originals have the edge is in execution. But while the execution in the prequels is far from flawless, Palpatine's arc is played out wonderfully. It's been suggested that Revenge of the Sith makes the prequels, especially Phantom Menace, better films because the pieces fall into place. That's true. But even without Sith, Palpatine in Menace is great. You can see him pulling the strings as a Senator and a Sith Lord. Every word he says is carefully calculated to provide maximum effect. McDiarmid owns that film. Some people hate the prequels. They loathe The Phantom Menace. That's fine. To each their own. But my ass will be in that seat watching a Star Wars movie on the big screen and loving every midichlorian counting second of it.

Phantom Menace, in particular, is cinematic Ambien. So same movie, with crap 3D and twice the ticket price? Yeah, have fun with that. Can't think of any masochist wanting to go through that unless they've got that leftover glow from playing Bioware's MMO.

    Ebert's review says it perfectly

    by darthvedder81

Looks great. Imaginative filmmaking. Interesting and exotic locales. George Lucas tells a good story. Phantom Menace is far from perfect but so are most movies. People may have been disappointed in '99 but with the dreck Hollywood puts out now TPM looks like "Lawrence of Arabia" by comparison. Things I'm looking forward to seeing 3D: -Title crawl -The first establishing shot of Theed (the last time I've been truly wowed by a special effect) -Otoh Gunga -Bongo journey -R2 to the rescue -Pod Race -Senate chamber -Droid Army unloading -Duel of the Fates

I have seen Episode I more times than I care to admit, hoping it would grow on me over time. Unfortunately the opposite occurred and with each repeat viewing, I find it more and more irritating! There is no way in hell I'm going to waste money to watch a movie I already can't stand just because it's in 3D! I'm sure it's going to be #1 this weekend, but will it beat the 1997 re-release of A New Hope?

Seriously, you have no right to complain about whatever George Lucas does because you're part of the problem. It's bad enough that he served us this bullshit before but now you're willing to take it again, and why, exactly? Because 3 fucking D will somehow make a terrible movie, great? Fucking retarded.

  • Feb. 6, 2012, 10:54 a.m. CST

    by vadakinX

It never happens where I live. It was the first time I'd ever seen such at thing. People usually just get up and leave but with Menace there was a huge round of applause. And the film came out a month and a half here after the US release so the bad reviews had already been making the rounds. But the audience I saw it with loved the film. It actually happened the first two times I saw the film. Yes, I paid to see The Phantom Menace more than once. Look, I'm aware of the hatred. I usually don't like talking about Star Wars on the internet because it descends into "Lucas raped my childhood" and all that other bullshit. There are people who genuinely hate this film and I don't have a problem with that. I'm not one of those people. I'm a screenwriter and there are certainly things I'd have done differently but I have to look at films for what they are, not what I wanted them to be and The Phantom Menace, as it is, is a whole lot of fun. At least for me.

    by ArmageddonProductions

To everybody who (shudders!) actually LIKES THE PHANTOM MENACE, good news! All of you going to see it this weekend will give further license to Lucas making either a) more of these cinematic shit-bombs or b) more "changes" to the six existing movies! Of course, if you're burbling this much over what has to be one of the most horrifying examples of "even a six-year-old could make a professional-looking movie if enough ILM/THX technicians are involved!" ever committed to film, then that probably IS good news.

    by Rob Jenson

If I do, I will sneak in. I WILL NOT give GL any more of my money till he releases the remastered-otherwise-unaltered OT on Blu. Phantom is probably my most-hated movie of all time. Yet . . . yeah, Star Wars. Plus morbid curiosity.

  • All of the prequels are great. The thing is, each film is directly aimed at an audience that is equal to Anakin's character's age. Ep I is a kid's movie. Ep II is a teen movie. Ep III is a movie for young adults. I can understand the Jar Jar hate, but not for anything else. The complaints of "wooden acting" are nonsense because Anakin and Padme have been told all their lives to suppress their emotions, so when they finally do start to feel things for each other, it's awkward as Hell. But that's how your first love is, awkward. But the people who complain about this shit are virgins so they'd never know anyway.

My three boys were screaming for me to take them before the commercial was even over. And before I could say yes, my brother had chimed in, "I'm going with you." Can't say my experience was like that. Saw it in a half-filled theatre on a Friday, and I literally fell asleep in the first 15 minutes. No joke. Only when the podrace kicked in, nearly an hour into the flick, did I feel like I was watching a Star Wars movie. Until then, it felt like "Dune for shitheads." I actually own TPM on DVD, mainly for the documentary. Because I do find it fascinating to watch all the craftmanship and care that went into making such a stillborn movie.

Get the fuck out of here!<P> Just admit it , you have no life and you cannot think of anything else to do with your time. "but my 6 yearold is a SW nut so...." HA <P> 6 year old what? Daughter? 6 year old girls couldn’t care less about SW unless dads has been forcing his terrible taste in movies on her since birth, which is a form of brainwashing and child abuse <P> Son? Slightly more plausible but sorry I don’t buy it.<p> Nephew? The most plausible scenario, but still just an excuse to go see the movie yourself without the embarrassment of being seen going into the cinema on your own. <p> Oh I can see the FOD youtube sketches already…<p> Calling up to a married siblings house “hay sis, I was thinking maybe, er seeing as I haven’t been as much part of my nephews lives as I should have been , well . I was thinking, er , that maybe I could bring the boys to the movies…?.”<p>Oh yeah , you just KNOW thousands of sad fucks are gonna try that one . Or <p> running into someone you know while leaving the Phantom Menace screening and grabbing some random passing kid to pretend you’re looking after him/her for the day. Before the kids actual guardians asks what he fuck you are doing…sirens running from the police etc <P>

The Prequel Trilogy was utter shite...

    by Pawprint

It showcased everything that is wrong with the modern day George Lucas. Not only were they shite Star Wars films, but they were shite films by any standard. The Blu Ray Complete Saga might have sold like hot cakes, but that was only because of the very deliberate move of only packaging the extras with the Complete Saga. If the extras were included on the seperate OT Blu Rays, shops would be knee-deep in stinking, rotting shitpiles of PT Blu Rays. I'd wager that - like me - the majority of people who own the Complete Saga will ensure that the PT Blu Rays never see the inside of a Blu Ray player; fuck - mine will never even come out of the box.

Star Wars is the most overrated film franchise ever

    by Seth Gecko

It is average and that is about it. The rabid fans are great and i can appreciate that. When it all breaks down though the first two were superb and the others just average films. Lucas has divided fans over this and it has become apparent he is obssessed with this franchise. To think he wasted 30 plus years on 6 films is just ludicrous.

  • Feb. 6, 2012, 11:24 a.m. CST

The reason Lucas is doing this..

by SlickyVonBoner to try and put the Star Wars movies back in the top 10 top grossers of all time. In 97, he did it with the "Special Editions" to beat ET. He was successful, but Titanic topped Star Wars the next year. Since then, The Dark Knight and Avatar have widened the gap. Each released 3d Star Wars movie may make a around $100 million more, with the last few making less as the 3D craze gets saturated by every "Classic" movie being re-released. It was a over 15 years the the OT were all in the top 10, plus 2 Indiana Jones were in there too. Now only Episode I and IV are in the top 10. I remember seing an interview with Lucas about Titanic beating Star Wars as the highest grosser of all time and he seemed in disbelief and confused how a movie could make more than his. Imagine how much money a well-written, well-directed Star Wars movie could make...

  • Feb. 6, 2012, 11:24 a.m. CST

Saw the first preview here in NZ and...

    by Paul Lewis

...the print we saw was shit - dark as hell, a horrible murky 3D conversion. I was expecting it to be digitally projected, but it wasn’t and the print looked just awful - we were asking ourselves what the point of it was. The pod-race should’ve been a high-light but was a blurry mess. Even the lightsaber battle (the only other reason to see this in 3D) seemed muted. I was never a fan of this film (and as usual almost fell asleep in the god-awful middle section), but I’d happily sit through the Blu-Ray version than watch this in 3D again. Go along and see for yourselves, but all I can say is thank God we had complimentary tickets.

    Wooden Acting in the PT...

    by Pawprint

Jesus Christ - it's like they're all drugged in all three films. The dialogue may have been clunky in the OT, but at least the lines are delivered convincingly and with emotion. Think of all the times seriously strong emotions are expressed and voices raised in anger for instance, showing frustration, fear, surprise, etc, in the OT, and contrast that to the PT: I think the strongest emotion we see in TPM is Obi-Wan briefly shouting "Noooooooooooo!"; in AOTC, there's a brief argument between Annakin and Obi-Wan when they lose Padme, and Annakin does some strained whining at times, with a bit of badly-acted frustrated sobbing after killing the Tuskens. ROTS, yeah, there's a bit more emotion, but by then it's too late - I couldn't give a fuck about these characters. Most of the time the actors are sleep-walking through the PT.

    by amrcanpoet

Can anyone confirm that all AMCs will be handing out Pod Racer Goggle 3D glasses? I know quantity will be limited, but can't seem to get a straight answer from the AMCs in my area as to whether or not they'll even have them.

  • It was first and foremost DISAPPOINTING, which is some ways can be the worst kind of movie. PM was still much better than a lot of other movies that have come out since then. It is better, for example, than anything Micheal Bay has made.

What the eff are you people thinking...

    by Adam

Why on Earth would anyone go see this film given how bad it was the first time? This is the movie that brought Jar Jar Binks to us. The movie that had to be re-edited by fans to produce a remotely viewable film. Jake Lloyd, ex-squeeze me, metachlorians.I mean, really? The Gungans, the accents and what in the hell are you people thinking? This movie is awful. This is a movie that drove people crazy. It turned Lucas into a pariah and suddenly, he was the bad guy who killed the force. Don't go.

  • It's an easy decision to go or not go but this stuff was made for cinemas not to feed angst on laptops.

You highlight the key misconception about The Phantom Menace, that it is a universally-reviled film. It isn't. It's hated by a small group of nerds that didn't realise they had grown up and expected a cinematic masterpiece from a filmmaker like Kubrick or some other great that they had moved onto in the years following Star Wars. In reality most people really like Phantom Menace, as you'll see this weekend when it's the number one film in America. Keep living in your hate-fuelled dream world though.

I'm pretty sure Phantom Menace WAS actually that bad.

    by kirttrik

From the immaculate conception of Anakin Skywalker, to the living force's pseudo-science explanation being the midichlorians, it was actually that bad, Jar-Jar aside. I have never watched a trilogy that revolved around some mythic prophecy, were there is not a clear description of the prophecy in any of the films. He is the one to bring balance to the force. OK, how is the force imbalanced? Never really explained. If the sith are thought to be dead, and all is good, why is there an imbalance in the force, and why is there still a prophecy? Wouldn't they believe the Jedi general in charge of originally eradicating the sith was the chosen one and the prophecy already fulfilled. What the hell are the sith trying to avenge if they themselves kill each other until there is only two of them. If the force needs to be balanced, doesn't that mean there needs to be the sith vs. the jedi, maybe the eradication of the sith led to the imbalance, if that's the case why are they still trying to kill the sith, and not capture them or something. If cloning technology exists, why is Anakin and his stupid son Luke using robotic arms instead of simply cloning a new one. How come the long neck clone planet isn't still building clones in episodes 4-6, or are they, whatever happened to that planet anyways? The answer is that many answers to common questions were not fully developed in the script. And if they were, they were used as backstory and not written in, or something, making the whole film feel random and nonsensical. It would have been easy to make these films good, the bar was extremely low for me to like these movies. In fact, I do like a couple fan edits of them, but the official films are unfortunately unwatchable. Yes, they still are not as bad as the Transformers Michael Bay, but that's like saying Qaddafi isn't as bad as Hitler.

    by Mitch

    by Ditko

It´s first 15-20 minutes feels vintage Star Wars, and it´s the best prequel. It is at least what Lucas wanted to film, whereas Episode 2 and 3 are just Lucas trying (and miserable failing) to win the fans back. The Phantom Menace is the best of the prequels. Having so little of Darth Maul and leaving you wanting for more actually works, and the soundtrack is the best Williams wrote in years. So, yeah, Episode 1 is alright. Fuck 2 and 3, tho.

    ...Midichlorixs are for kids!

  • ...I don't see this doing terribly great business. Do re-releases EVER make much? I can't think of any off hand, but I could be wrong. I never actually hated Episode I...saw it in theaters, thought the Darth Maul fight was the high point and the pod races were cool, but the rest was cheesy and forgettable. That was my impression in 1999 as a kid. I still maintain that. Cheese mixed with well done races and fights. I can live with that. I've certainly seen far worse movies. Jar Jar isn't half as bad as that annoying singing CGI alien with big stretchy lips Lucas threw in to the other movie, or the CGI ants and gophers in Crystal Skull. We went from godly forces melting the faces of nazis to...ants. Really? And don't EVEN get me started on Shia LaBeoff and his swinging on vines with monkeys. I would have loved crystal skull despite it's flaws if not for HIM and THAT. Worse than Jar Jar, nuking the fridge, Noooooo, wooden acting, and Lucas' overall hard-on for CGI combined. I'd like to watch Jar jar beat Shia to death, honestly. Then he'd have my respect.

I don't mind the prequel bashing, or people calling me an idiot for going to see it, but for those suggesting that I'm using my kids as an excuse to go see it, and that I would go anway: WRONG. I'm pushing 40, my wife hates sci-fi, and I'm a little past calling up my peeps to go hang out at the local cineplex. If not for the little guy who went out for halloween as a clone trooper, I would not be going. Not because I have any hate for the prequels, but because I can't afford to shell out twelve bucks to watch the same movie I already have on DVD...albeit with a puppet Yoda and no 3-D. I'll blame going to the movie on my kids, quite accurately. That I can enjoy it, despite all its flaws, is just a bonus for me.

  • DO NOT DENY THEM THE MAGIC!!!!!! i have 2 kids...neither will see the prequels...maybe when they're like 12..i'll say look: #1, there's no santa, #2-there's 3 more star wars films. sorry.

  • My only copy of TPM is a VHS copy I got as a gift a decade ago. VHS is unwatchable now on my 50" screen, so I have not watched EP 1 in years, and haven't missed it a bit. If I'm not even willing to get a DVD copy, why in the hell would I pay the 3D price? Episode 1 is a horrible dumbed down kid movie with a shitty nonsense script. Absolutely nothing about 3D does anything to fix the flaws or make it better. I won't watch Jar Jar in 3D. I won't watch Anakin say yippie in 3D. I won't watch midechlorians discussed in 3D. I won't watch a meaningless pod race in 3D. If I'm at the theater seeing something else, I may sneak into the last 20 minutes of a showing. There is nothing else worth my time.

3D Jurassic Park would be more appreciated

    by wcolbert

Maybe even touch up a few of the effects, as well as they've aged, they could perfect them! But only if they did it right. Two scenes I always missed from that movie that should have been included: The T-Rex in the lagoon (sort of tried to make up for it with JPIII, but too little too late) and the underground raptor nests - kind of an important bit (and the fact that some got off the island was completely overlooked). Also ignored Hammond's death, Wu's death, etc... but still my all-time favorite movie. As far as other Spielberg/Lucas related productions though I'd rather see Indiana Jones in 3-D than the original trilogy of star wars...with such dated effects (even more so than Indy) just seems akin to putting a fresh coat of paint on the the bottom of the Atlantic. It'd still be old and rusty either way.

I don't understand how there are people who are still enraged by a movie that's just shy of 13 years old. It's weird to me that some people couldn't move on with their adult lives (and I say that as someone with Star Wars tattoos). Watch the movies you like. Skip the ones you don't. If they affected your life - great! If they didn't, that's okay too. Enjoy what you get out of it and move on - there's just no value in harboring so much anger over movie franchise for kids.

Except, you'll get to watch it in a theater in that shitty post-conversion 3D that, so far, not one person who has ever seen a movie (CLASH OF THE TITANS, GREEN LANTERN, etc.) utilizing this process has ever had one positive thing to say about. I mean, seriously, I appreciate and even envy the fact that you have THAT MUCH disposable income, but at least think about it for a goddamn minute. Worse, you guys will be pissing yourselves to BUY it on 3D Blu-Ray the minute it gets released (again). I mean, fuck, man, I wouldn't triple-dip fucking APOCALYPSE NOW if they just re-released it in 4D and threw bullets and Marlon Brando's corpse at you during every screening. by ArmageddonProductions

I just stated this above, but ... why would you want to see ANY of them with that shitball post-conversion 3D? None of them were shot FOR 3D in the first place, which means the 3D effect will be marginal, and the movies themselves will look murky and dingy. In other words, you'll have the repeated pleasure of paying $20 a ticket to see something on a big screen that looks marginally better than a DVD on a poorly-calibrated TV set and maybe there'll be some nifty depth-of-field effects in a couple of places. Then, you'll probably end up paying between $20-$100 (set) AGAIN for those inevitable 3D Blu-Rays, no extras, plus $5 for a tube of Preparation H when you realize they're the exact same fucking movies you just bought on Blu-Ray a while back that HAD extras, but with a mild 3D-ish effect in some spots.

Don't presume that you know the kind of people that will see this. There are many film fans that go back and see classics like "Lawrence of Arabia" at the Arclight because no matter how good a home theater set-up is, it will never beat the social experience of seeing a film in a theater. It's not about dignity. Dignity is something sports fans should show when their team loses. Crying and looting because your team loses? That's when you need dignity.

People bash the prequels (and THE PHANTOM MENACE in particular) because they're terrible movies. RETURN OF THE JEDI was also a lousy movie, but it was at least preceded by two good movies and had the benefit of, you know, a screenplay written by an adult and directed by someone who hadn't spent the intervening fourteen years locked away in an office, counting money and playing with STAR WARS figures.</p><p> But since you asserted your love of the prequels ... which parts of THE PHANTOM MENACE really grabbed you? Was it the acting? Which actor really stood out for you? Was it the powerful dialogue? What was your favorite line and why? Was it the storyline? What was your favorite twist regarding the Trade Federation dispute or the vote of no confidence in the Galactic Senate? Can you tell me who the actual main character of THE PHANTOM MENACE even is?

Now, unless you can quantify how a 13-year-old cash grab being retrofit to ride a current (and desperate) attempt to wrest as much money from the movie-going public as possible because it happens to have the words "STAR WARS" in the title compares to a fan of classic movies enjoying the experience of seeing one of AFI's top 100 movies of all time in an actual classic L.A. theater, I would point out that YOU seem to be the one trolling, especially when I wasn't disparaging the movie itself so much as I was pointing out that, yes, STAR WARS fans are that fucking gullible.

    The Phantom Menace

    by master_of_realty

absolutely serves its purpose which is to tell a STAR WARS tale, set in-motion events that will lead into the OT, and remain faithful to the established mythos. No one has ever claimed that it features a mind-blowing screenplay or the best acting (acting has been an issue in STAR WARS films since 1977), but they are sufficient to make the movie work. Jake Lloyd is miscast, but he still serves his purpose and is quite good at points. Jar Jar is obviously the worst part about the entire series (save maybe Ewoks), but the film stays afloat dispite him. It features the classic music and the new stuff Williams wrote for it is fine. JEDI. DARTH MAUL. Jesus, people - it's a fun space-adventure with some great action scenes and gets the ball rolling on the epic six-part story of the Motherfucking Skywalkers and if you Star Wars "fans" can't like it for that, then there's not much else to say.

The Star Wars series is like an aging actress - used to be hot, but now has had so much cosmetic surgery, it looks stupid and fake and just makes you feel sad. I'd rather watch Lord of the Rings again. At least Peter Jackson doesn't change his movies to make them worse every two years. Jar Jar shot first.

    Re: seymourscagnettisbruisedego

    by ArmageddonProductions

If YOU like THE PHANTOM MENACE, you like it, no need to even defend that. If you're trying to convince me it's a well-made movie (let's not even drag STAR WARS into it), you just can't. I think my main issue here, though, is: why would even a die-hard PHANTOM MENACE fan wanna pony up $20 to see it in what may be the worst presentation possible, especially when you likely own the exact same movie on Blu-ray already? sean1701 already stated that some people will want to see it on a big screen again just because it's on a big screen with theater sound (so I assume you'll be taking it in at a "select 2D theater", sean1701?), which makes a sick sort of sense, if THE PHANTOM MENACE were some sort of timeless cinematic classic for the ages or something (and some of you sick fucks seem to think it is!) and if it hadn't just been released on Blu-ray 3 months ago. But the 3D thing makes no sense -- the post-conversion 3D process has already knocked a lot of the wind out of 3D ticket sales because the end result is so lousy and the movie itself, not having been shot with 3D in mind, will just be the same movie with a not-very-thought-out gimmick in play. You're not paying money to see a "great movie on a big theater screen", you're paying $20 to watch an unsatisfyingly-degraded version that may well detract from the experience of even going to see it.

To clarify, my point was that to see a film that has been out on home video for a long time being released in a movie theater makes the experience of seeing it differ from the home experience. While Phantom Menace may not be in the AFI top 100, Star Wars itself is there at #13. Is Phantom Menace better than Lawrence of Arabia? Depends on who you ask. Your attack on people simply because they show a positive interest (unlike your negative interest) makes you the troll. Internet trolls are people typically unleashing one or more cynical or sarcastic remarks on an innocent by-stander. For the record, I work in the film industry and love this kind of banter. There is no need to make personal attacks simply because you disagree with the material presented. As for the "King Shit of Nerd Hill" title, I'd rather be that than some hapless person vying for cred by trolling a talk back board.

We need to impress upon Lucas that his constant meddling with the original Trilogy needs to stop. The ONLY way that FOX and Jabba 2 (Lucas) will get it through their thick skulls that we are fed up is if we do not throw MILLIONS of dollars at them to keep this shitty shallow attempts at manipulation from working. We want the original Trilogy back the way it was in the best possible presentation. I would gladly buy 3 copies of the prequels to get it. But the more he lies his ass of and claims it's just not possible or TOO EXPENSIVE (Seriously, What the fuck?) the more I will do my best to block any attempt at getting my money or anyone elses. Don't give in to this prick until he at least gives us a pristine copy of the original Trilogy on DVD and Blu-Ray. Just a clean copy in non anamorphic DVD and Blu. it's not hard and if I had a copy of it I could do it myself. Now they release more crap in 3D and then will claim that "maybe" we'll get what we want in that Blu-Ray set release in 6 years. Vote with your wallet people, if you don't want them do repeat this over and over. Do not see this crap in the theaters.

Every single major film with more than one version is available in EVERY version. Almost always on the same blu-ray. Like BLADE RUNNER which has all FOUR versions together for one purchase. If I'm just a "name caller", then give me one good reason not to have the original theatrical versions available to the MANY people who would like to have them. He's a film preservationist. But refuses to preserve his own. He knows that a very large portion of his fanbase wants the original theatrical versions but refuses to release them. Intentionally frustrating people is what an asshole does. Maybe you're not from America, but that is our definition and George Lucas is doing exactly that. And don't give me the the typical and tired "you're just a bitter original fan" response, actually give a defense for not releasing the originals.

Worst thing about Episode I - everything else. All the members of the "George Lucas Kiss-Ass Club" think this will make a dent at the BO ... in the duldrums of February I feel obligated to agree. Unfortunately the members of the "George Lucas Kiss-Ass Club" are gonna look like even bigger asses when they show up at their local cineplex as the only person dressed as a jedi. The rest of us normal people have got better things to spend our hard earned money on than 3-dimensional retreads of cinematic dogshit and star wars action figures. But who am I to argue with inevitability. Go out there and fuck this franchise again, fanboys. Fuck it hard. Cause you sure as hell aren't fucking anything else.

  • Not that Lucas should be let off the hook. Lucas intentionally frustrates people because people let him get away with it. They do this by providing him with a steady stream of nerd dollars. He gets this money by: 1. continually appealing to people's weakness ("I hate Episode I but I just can't resist anything with the STAR WARS logo on it") 2. creating an air of fake populism around his films (week-long line-ups for premieres, that "fan" recreation of STAR WARS that happened to surface while he was promoting RED TAILS) which then feeds into itself. Lucas plays the geek audience like a harp. Earn his respect by cutting off a little bit of his cash flow. He may or may not have "raped" your childhood but he's DEFINITELY raping the shit out of your wallet.

    by Nem_Wan

Theatrical re-rerelease means more box office which means more royalties for actors. Jake Lloyd was a little boy doing what his parents and George Lucas told him to do. If his life has been warped by all the shit then he might as well get paid. Also the OT actors pretty much only get paid when there's a theatrical rerelease because their contracts back in the day didn't anticipate all the ancillary revenue. However when they do get paid they get paid well. Alec Guinness's deal was reportedly for 2% of Lucas's 20% of the box office gross, back when Fox owned the movie -- not sure how it works now that Lucas has all the rights.

Will enjoy it just like in 99, surrounded with friends, when I got a day off work and a story and quote in the newspaper. 13 years later, the film holds up. Still fun. Still Star Wars. Let go of the hate...get a life and move off if u must obsess and be compulsive. Still better than anything with a Hobbit. By a long country mile.

  • If you actually stuck to your words and didn't mention star wars again ever, I'd buy it, as it is, I don't. U keep coming back...always every time there is a Lucas related story posted. 13 YEARS LATER! I don't listen to babies throwing fits in exaggeration and over-the-top emotional declarations of it being the WORST THING EVER. Nope, not even close. It's no longer cute, so try again.

it's tracking at 25 million opening weekend

    el oh el

  • Kind of impressive that a movie of this scale could get made with such a hideously bad script. Blows Freddy Got Fingered out of the water.
