A Brief A.B.King Report on COLLATERAL DAMAGE, just added an extra tidbit...

Published at:  Feb 28, 2000 2:37:30 PM CST

Hey folks, Harry here with an extra tidbit on COLLATERAL DAMAGE from the Monkey_King... Enjoy..

Andy Davis is directing for Warner Bros for a projected 2001
spring/early summer release. A buddy of mine, stunt coordinator Tom
Muzila(Under Seige/Three Kings) was just hired on as the advisor and
consultant to the director and writer on the film. The film is in it's
4th rewrite, based on Tom's ideas about the character Arnold portrays.
Tom is going to setting up a meeting with Arnold within the month about
a unique training session he plans to put the 'Terminator' through to
coincide with his character in the script. I was told filming starts in
June. Tom is also awaiting a copy of the much anticipated script from my
writng partner and I, entitled 'The UnChosen One.' Take care Harry.
Keep up the great site.

Hey folks, Harry here with the latest on that Ahnult fella from the Schwarzenegger/Stallone fan #1, A.B. King. ALso, in one of the half dozen or so emails that I have received from A.B. in the past couple of days, he claims that the reason the big man dropped TOTAL RECALL 2, was so he could do WITH WINGS AS EAGLES after COLLATERAL DAMAGE with Paul Verhoeven as the alleged director. So far, I haven't been able to get that confirmed. But we still have to look at the possibility that Arnold will be doing the Darabont/Russell directed DOC SAVAGE: MAN OF BRONZE instead. So... Here's A.B.

Harry, someone very close to the production of COLLATERAL DAMAGE sent me
this small piece of plot info:

Arnold plays a fireman who's late to meet his wife and young 5 year old son
at
the doctors office, which happens to be next to the Columbian Embassy. From
a
vantage point of a block away he can see his wife and child waiting out
front
for him as the Embassy explodes. He watches his wife and child die. The FBI
and CIA aren't doing too much about. Armolds wife and son were declared
Collateral Damage. He finds out more info and flies down to Columbia
himself,
looking for a terrorist called the WOLF.

Basic retribution plot. Shows how far a man will be pushed when nobody else
wants to do anything about it. Arnold has to play a 'real guy' in this one.
No
humor, no super-hero antics. Very realistic departure for Schwarzenegger.
Film
is targeted for a spring/summer 2001 release from Warner Bros. Tom worked
with
Andy Davis before on Under Seige and Above the Law. He doesn't have many
kind
words to say about Seagal either. Hope this helps.

    First?...

No one wants to see Arnie play regular man, He only works as a super type. I mean look at him!

    Instead

    by battleflag

Seriously, the guy has made his career playing larger than life characters. I just can't see a successful transition happening. What he should do is an End of Days sequel. God sends him to hell to finish the job on the Prince of Darkness when it's revealed that Satan was indeed responsible for his family's death- this time it's personal... YES!

    Access Hollywood

    by captain loft

Access Hollywood (crappy show that they are) just showed an interview with Cameron where he said that they're moving forward with TL2 (one would deduce in time for Summer or Christmas 2001).

Why is this guy still working?

    by vegas

Seriously, when was the last time any of you actually enjoyed a Schwarzenegger movie? I liked True Lies and Terminator 2, but other than those he hasn't produced anything of value for over a decade (and those two movies were nine and six years ago, respectively). He should just own up to the fact that his day is done, and retire to his wealth and wife already. Maybe run for mayor of a small western town or something, anything so long as we don't have to sit through another Last Action Hero/Batman & Robin/Jingle All the Way/End of Days/etc. etc.

    My name is Fweez!

    by sodomy redux

SR here. Arnie needs to buy a clue. His forte is not as an everyman, but as a larger than life asskicker extrodinare. All of the so-called 'fan favorites' - True Lies, Terminator, Predator, Total Recall, etc. - all involve him gunning down the bad guys while cracking wise. I don't see why Arnie's struggling against this typecasting - he's doing better than 99 percent of Hollywood, and I don't think that it's exactly insulting that people can only picture you as a superman. Wise up Arnold, and go back to form. You are still buff enough to pull it off. All who disagree with me shall be destroyed by my psychic Mindfire.

    This looks recycled from SAVIOR

    by stephen dedalus

Anyone seen SAVIOR? Interesting little film with Dennis Quaid as a soldier who sees his family die while on duty overseas, and has to deal with the psychological implications, as well as save those who might have similar problems. It's a far cry from what this one probably is (lots of explosions, people getting their heads knocked off by Ah-nuld, etc.), but is worth a look. Here, it seems the film-makers took an original, little-known film and made another action piece. But I shouldn't prejudge.

    THE IRON GIANT more "real"

    by todd

If you want real, why rely on Arnold? Anyone who has seen THE IRON GIANT, knows what happens when THE GIANT is pushed to far and believes that the Army killed Hogarth. Now that is an action feast. Also it would seem that Arnold has trouble sometimes showing the mental shift that occurs when he is really upset because he lacks the depth as an actor. Don

    This just won't work...

    by ninja star

... I mean, after all, he was attempting to play it straight in End Of Days, correct? And with his performance in that coming off as nothing but cartoony, his emotions being caricatures of anything remotely resembling real, I doubt anyone would want to sit through another failed experiment in realistic acting from the big A. As others have said on the board already -- Arnold needs to get a clue, get another ass-kicking role, or get out of the arena. Slipping back into the shadows, [NS]

Why would anyone want a "realistic" Schwarzenegger?

    by dave_f

I love Arnold as an ass-kicker, but he's a one-trick pony. If he's not being over-the-top, then I have no interest in him. Man, End of Days was so horribly uneven, occasionally attempting vintage Ah-nuld theatrics, then dipping back into the shadows to try and be a little more realistic. Terrible mix. Arnie should've gone full-on Commando at the end, as others have suggested. Hell, man, you don't beat the devil with faith, you beat him with a shitload of guns and a "fuck you!" attitude. Well, the Ah-nuld I once knew would've done that. Please, please, please, take Schwarzenegger back to his roots as Conan or as Doc Savage. No more half-hearted attempts to broaden his horizons. They're just forgettable.

  • That revelation, if accurate, just does NOT sit well with me. With all due respect to that particular profession but what would stunt coordinators truly know about characters, plotting, or story? This development does not reassure me about Arnold getting his career back on track anytime soon. Here's a novel idea: get a WRITER to contribute to the rewrites! http://welcome.to/flixburg

    Such an original title too

    by obscure homage

Collateral Damage sounds like a cheesy, low budget Dolph Lundgren action no brainer that goes straight to video where it rots in purgatory forever. I absolutely refuse to have any expectations whatsoever for another Arnold movie until I see it with my own eyes. I'm tired of box office speculation and endless ramblings about how much his next films will kick ass. I made the fatal mistake of expecting End of Days to be on par with T2 months before its release. Suffice it to say that I was overwhelmed with anger at Arnold for doing such a godawful film, and for Mbaction for telling us for a year straight that we were morons if we didn't believe that the film would gross five gazillion dollars domestically. Like I said, I will remain mum about any of his future projects until they hit theaters. The memory of End of Days will still linger until then, unfortunately.

    This sounds like shit

    by gilmour

We've seen and heard this plot many times before. I agree that it sounds like a cheap 80's Dolph Lundgren film. Does anyone really care much about Arnold anymore? And i'm sick of 55 year old guys in films with 20 year old wives and 5 year old kids, why can't arnie have an adult kid?

    Collateral Damage

    by death zone

Hey there. As one of the number of screenwriters consulted on this project, I'd like to clear up a few things: 1) The script is not, currently, a cheesy revenge flick. It's a well-thought out political suspense thriller with moments of action and intrigue. It's more like The Fugitive meets Clear and Present Danger ... and if those movies bring one specific actor to mind, hello, you're right. The project was originally tailored for Harrison Ford. The idea of the movie is to do the opposite of a revenge film. To set up expectations and knock them all down. Now ... comes the Ice Man. Arnold jumped on the project within days of End of Days release. Arnold was really POed with the final product on EOD. (Hello! Surprise! You're working with Peter Hyams!) So Arnold felt he needed to do a Stallone. He wanted *his* Copland. As soon as Arnold gave his thumb up the studio greenlit the film. Thus another example of how the star system runs Hollywood. Now, I can understand why so many of you are out there screaming ... both the Arnold fans and the non Arnold fans. Pulling off a regular American everyman doesn't seem to be possible for Arnold. He'll never be John McClain or Dr. Kimble. Hell, he'll never even be that insipid character Costner played in The Postman. Still, there is a remote possibility that Arnold might be made to work in CD. He is the American icon for an action hero ... and the premise of CD is to take that basic mythic American hero who will persevere under adversity and turn everything upside down on him.

As for any stunt coordinator having significant influence on the screenplay ... that is probably wishful thinking. If it's true ... then the project is definitely doomed.

    All to familiar

    by dtsipras

Is the working title Clear and Present Patriot Games, by any chance? If Arnold wants to stretch, he should try to surprise us. He shouldn't make a Harrison Ford movie.
