In the mood for some GI JOE: RETALIATION fun?

Published at:  Feb 01, 2012 3:52:02 PM CST

Hello ladies and gentlemen, Muldoon here and if you clicked on the title, I assume you're answer is maginificent "Hell yes I do!" The folks at Collider pointed me to the 30 second Super Bowl spot below. I actually thought the first JOE was a fun popcorn movie. Oddly enough, I can absolutely understand why people might not have been into it. It's sort of like filling up on chips and salsa before you get your meal... I was however blown away at BNAT with the first trailer and with the little bit of footage we get below, still am incredibly excited to check it out. The film explodes onto screens June 29th.

Here's the first trailer:

More movies should do this. When you make a buttload on a bad movie, fire the bad actors and replace them with better ones and use the money you made from #1 to make #2 way better. First movie was bad, this one actually looks like it'll be worth watching.

...you got Cobra Commander in a helmet that actually resembles the classic, ninjas, Firefly (with camo ski mask), Cobra taking over the White House, Jinx, and some good action and set pieces.

It looks like a Gi Joe movie to me and from what I've seen so far, a good one.

Complete badass retardation. Cobra, Firefly, White House, Evil Presidents, Bruce Willis, ninjas on cliffs...I mean, what do you want? It's an excuse to be completely ridiculous, and they seem to go with it. I'm certainly not going to pay 14 dollars to see it in a theater...but I'm sure it'll get a play on netflix instant in a few years. No doubt.

    by grammaton cleric binks

It had better plot, character development, they fired real bullets, people died. They really died, not like they died, but came back as Dark Phoenix or crap like that. The Silent Castle is one of the best comic ever written. Not one single word of dialogue, and yet pictures not only completely tell the story, but we learn a lot about Snake Eyes, Scarlet, and Stormshadow.

    You are CORRECT.

    Silent Interlude is SUPERB.

Sadly the first film took a giant poo on Snake Eyes, Stormshadow, Scarlett and their relationships which have always been the most intriguing in the G.I Joe comics.

I think the new Snakes costume is *better* but still to armoured if that makes sense. I like visor or goggles - bit of both please, but the visor is harder to pull off. The whole 'man without a face' thing was dropped too - I want to see 'im in his rubber mask and trilby with the hat pulled down over the eyes like a latex Eastwood - Scarlett having to buy baby powder to stop him itching ; )

StormShadows costume still appears to be the gay white leather Japanese rockstar outfit from the first film - YUK.

Can we get some proper CG's and Cobra Troopers in this? Red and Blue thanks!

They got Firefly's uniform right, and that's good enough for me (plus fucking Volstagg Ray Stevenson is playing him!) Snake Eyes' visor/helmet has also been tweaked, and looks much more like the comic version. CC's helmet is PERFECT. Looks like they even got a modified version of the Rattler A10 in there. You jaded fuckers are way too jaded. This cast is way better than the original's... although I will miss Rachel Nichols/Scarlett. I hope to hell they don't kill her off offscreen. Looks like The Rock is still in Fast Five mode, which is fine with me.

    by room23storeblogspotcom

The comics were so great not only because he was a great writer, but also because he actually served in one of the Armed Forces in Koreas (The IDW 80's trade paperback reprints of Special Missions talk about this) so he was able to add all of these great details from personal experience.

I agree that Silent Interlude was one of the best comics out there. He did another silent one in issue #85 where Zartan and a bunch of red ninjas try to kill Storm Shadow before he killed Zartan to avenge the Hard Masters death (Storm Shadow had already forgiven him). Its not as good, but still pretty great.

    Mythos?

    by uglylilpup

Is GI Joe really a "mythos?" How about My Little Pony? Care Bears? Rainbow Brite?

It was bad enough when the review for Inglourious Basterds contained the term "World War II universe." As if history were some kind of Marvel Comics domain.

But please, I daresay that we have out-mythosed ourselves if the thin backstory to a sequel to a movie based on a cartoon based on a toy is now considered a "mythos."

    Reply to Talkback

  • What a strange movie! Cobra Commander turning into a snake was positively brilliant. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the madness and bizarro Cobra-la back-story.

I wasn't into this stuff when I was a kid (obsessed with splatter movies, I pretty much shunned all cartoons), but I'm trying to make up for it now. G.I. Joe is pretty damn fun. And while it is pretty obvious Duke was meant to die in the cartoon movie...I still don't want to see Channing Tatum's live-action Duke take a dirt nap.

    I met Larry Hamma...

    by solitaire

At the Joe con in Rhode Island. I was really nervous, but he was very chill and laid back. I told him "You helped shape my childhood!" which kind of freaked him out and made me feel akward. It was true, though. My dad was a vet, and reading the series with me was a blast for him becuse of the authenticity. I got interested in writing and art because of that book. Now, as to how this looks: It seems highly influenced by resolute, and that is a good thing. The ninja stuff used to bother me, but when you think of it, commando training has a heavy ninja element to it, take the beginning of the Hunted with Benicio Del Toro for example. If they can match the military feel of the comic with the sci fi element of the cartoon it should be a good time.

    Reply to Talkback

  • but sometimes he overdid it with the emphasis on Snake Eyes as he became nearly the focal point of the comic series. (Before you know it, it became "Snake Eyes and the Ninja Force"?!?)

That and rehashed plotlines like snake eyes being responsible for the death of CC's Brother, then afterwards, Baroness' Brother.

Guy is a legend but sometimes I have to question whatdefuck was he thinking at times?
