Ridley Scott + Cormac McCarthy = Yes Please
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Deadline is reporting that Ridley Scott is close to a deal to direct The Counselor, that spec script that Cormac McCarthy surprised the industry with a bit ago.
It seems that Mr. Scott is lining it up to be his Prometheus follow-up and he's wanting to get this rolling immediately.
The script has been described as a disturbing and powerful accounting of a lawyer who descends into the world of drug trafficking. Comparisons to McCarthy's book No Country For Old Men, adapted so well by the Coens, have been abound since McCarthy seemingly just showed up one day with a complete, original script. If that's the case and we get Scott doing a down and dirty drug tale filthy with McCarthy's unique dialogue and world view then I think we're in for something special. What do you folks think?

Why do I think of Tony Danza?

Has anyone seen the latest pic of Cap in his new modern costume? Is he to be the comic relief?? Joss (i will say it again) is a nightmare. In Scott i trust. Imagine if he made the Avengers??

sailor_ripley only Terrence Mallik could do Blood Meridian any justice.

and that's IF anyone had the balls to fund it. Scott can do human drama, not existential human drama. remember the shitty dream sequences of Gladiator???

I demand to know what happened to "The Forever War" adaptation Scott was to make!!!
by ironhelix
What happened to that?!?!
-
I remember a few years ago when that was being reported as under discussion. I still think that would be intriguing. At the time I thought Paul Dano would be excellent as The Kid, but he's surely too old now. And there have been a lot of great suggestions for The Judge (John Goodman among others).
Then again, guys like John Hillcoat (THE PROPOSITION) or Andrew Dominik (THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES) are proven commodities at making poetic, downbeat, and (in Hillcoat's case) brutal Westerns, and I'd be even happier to see them take a shot at BM. -

mojination, Scott wouldn't be my choice either, I just want to see someone attempt it.
by sailor_ripley
I don't know who I would go with, I think Paul Thomas Anderson could pull it off.

Get ready bitches!

Terry Gilliam in his prime would be interesting.
Orson Welles...
Oliver Stone is his 90's blaze of glory...
Contemporary: P. T. Anderson... Ang Lee, as a lark... The Coens... Werner Herzog...

So no Prometheus II (as has been rumored), nor Blade Runner II?
by lv_426
I am actually happy about that.
Unless Prometheus turns out to be absolutely great, then I don't know if I would want to have him risk mucking up Blade Runner. That is his best and most loved film I'd say. It really isn't worth it to tempt tainting that masterpiece. Alien on the other hand, has been dragged through the mud by some of the later sequels, so I would guess that fans and geeks don't mind so much in someone like Ridley trying to make another film in that universe.
If Prometheus is awesome though, and I mean it needs to be nearly as good as the first two Alien films or equal, which is a tall order, to warrant a sequel. That is unless of course Prometheus ends on a cliffhanger and we need another film to finish the story.
I am still bummed out about Ridley not making The Forever War though. I doubt any of the major studios will let anyone make a proper adaptation of that book though. It would probably need to be done on a lower than blockbuster budget with an effects-savvy director at the helm, kinda like how Peter Jackson and Neill Blomkamp made District 9 for only 30 million. -
Bring the Blade Runner and Prometheus sequels too though.
-
It was like he was totally fired up about it again...
First we had the announcements for The Forever War adaptation. Then the two-part Alien prequel which became Prometheus. Then the announcement that he was going to also adapt Brave New World, and more recently news of a possible Blade Runner II.
Is he really going to go back to the usual thrillers and historical epics that he's stuck to for the majority of his career?
I hope not, but then again, I am not thrilled with the idea of a Blade Runner II either. -

Ridley is the only director who can 'do' Blood Meridian.
by spaghettiwall
In a way that attracts both arthouse and mainstream theater goers, creating an ultimate masterpiece.
Mallick is way too out there. He's like a sequel to Stanley Kubrick, but Stanley's films had actual plot. -

Development Hell.
I played around with an adaptation myself 15-16 years ago. Haldeman said to knock myself out. I went through too many drafts.
Book could make for a helluva movie, though, with modifications.

Scott has just about averaged 1 movie per year since Gladiator in 2000 ...
by ginge_muppet
Plenty of films left in him!

You're not getting any younger Ridley.

I only have one soul to give to gamble with. It just might be to see this movie early.

Have you ever thought about working on it again? And how many drafts did you do?

What happened to Scott doing Blood Meridian? + Oliver Stone
by grendel69
I agree Oliver Stone used to be amazing....
Platoon, Wall Street,Born on the Fourth of July,The Doors, Nixon, JFK,Heaven & Earth,NBK -
McCarthy's material has been pretty hit or miss thus far; they knocked No Country out of the park while The Road was an absolute mess, so we'll see.
-
felt SURE this is what he'd be adapting. Oh well, this is still kick ass news . . . How old is Scott now???
-
and agree the great Alien was ruined by copious and horrible sequels (Alien Queen??? what a crock!) so it needed the master to come in and show the rookies how its done. As for any Blade Runner sequel, I hope it never happens. BR needs no sequel/prequel or whatever. I know sci-fi is where Scott ought to be concentrating but if he does other stuff thats cool too as long as its not a turd like that Italy movie. I still think Scott is the only person that could do justice to Rondevous (sp?) with Rama or Childhoods End.

Blood Meridian done by Sir Ridley would be the sickest movie of all time.
by marvelousd
Yet I think I heard that James Franco now owns the rights to Blood Meridian. If this is true let us all shudder in fear of potential brilliance turned to utter dreck. Blood Meridian in the hands of a talented visual stylist and one who appreciates its elliptical qualities could be something marvelous beyond all reckoning. That book is hands down the best western story ever told, full of grit and balls and dark premonitions and devoid of sentimental mythologizing of the bloodlands of the western expansion.
Come to think of it, Ridey has the visual acumen but not the artistic sentiments to truly pull off Blood Meridian. The only way it could be really done is right is by a grade A director working with a shit load of money at HBO to produce a ten part series a la Band of Brothers. Now that would be a project worth getting excited about!!!!!! -

I like a lot of Scott's movies, but hes not even on the top ten list of directors who should adapt McCarthy's work.
by dahveed1972

To do the book any justice a movie would need to be a messy, hallucinatory mind-fuck of the sort not released by Hollywood in a while (and by Ridley never). If you do the movie straight on, it's going to be a violent, kinda boring western.
What it needs is the Coppola Apocalypse Now treatment, where somebody goes off into the Mexican desert for 6 months and comes out missing some fingers with 1000 hours of fucked up footage. If you gave Oliver Stone some bad acid, he might have pulled it of in the mid-90's. I don't know there's anyone working today with the savagery and willingness to go overboard that could even begin to touch the book.
What they'll end up with is the Road. A bland, mildly-interesting version that captures the plot highlights but totally misses the point. -
1 Coens
2 Cronenberg
3 Lynch
4 Herzog
5 PTA
6 Gus van Sant
7 FIncher
8 JOhn Sayles
9 Jarmusch
10 Eastwood
And several more probably. So actually Scott wouldnt even make my top 20 list. Im talking full on adaptation, where the director/writer incorporates his own style and philosophy without losing the essence of the novel. Not an easy task. The Road adaptation was - despite excising several scenes from the book - much too straightforward to justify its existence. -
He should have done "To Kill The Irishman", it would have been a lot better.
The only Cormac McCarthy book I liked was "All The Pretty Horses". I don't think McCarthy gets Mexico, but most Americans don't. -
Well, I like Aliens immensely, appreciate the ambition of the flawed Alien³, and find that Alien Resurrection is where the Alien franchise really fell off its rocker. The two AvP spin-off films were literally the hammer and nails that put Alien in the coffin or cryotube if you know what I mean? AvP turned James Cameron and Ridley Scott off of the franchise when they were working on collaborating on another Alien film about ten years ago.
While I can appreciate what they were trying to do with in terms of interesting themes and a new type of alien in Alien³, can you imagine how legendary the one-two punch of Alien and Aliens would be regarded as these days if they were the only two films ever made in the series? -

Please. When Prometheus becomes a box office hit there will be nothing stopping your from adapting this awesome book.
We can't trust this property to some flashy two-bit Hollywood action hack director.
