Rooney Mara hops on board the Soderbergh Express

Published at:  Jan 30, 2012 1:45:41 PM CST

Hello ladies and gentlemen, Muldoon here with a bit of casting news from the fine folks at DeadLine. It looks as though Blake Lively's been replaced in Steven Soderbergh's SIDE EFFECTS by the lovely Rooney Mara. Soderbergh's freshly upgraded film centers on a young woman dealing with depression abusing pain killers as her husband is about to be released from prison.  This marks the first feature Mara's signed onto since her Oscar nomination for GIRL WITH A DRAGON TATTOO.

The film also stars Channing Tatum (GI JOE), Jude Law (SHERLOCK HOLMES) and Catherine Zeta-Jones (ENTRAPMENT) and is being produced by Greg Jacobs (OCEAN'S ELEVEN) and Lorenzo di Bonaventura (TRANSFORMERS). Shooting begins shooting in April.

    Soderbergh retirement

    by samuel fulmer

Originally I think his last three films were going to be Magic Mike, the cable Liberace biopic, and The Man From Uncle. He left The Man From Uncle and then lined up Bitter Pill, so maybe Bitter Pill or Liberace will be his "last" film.

Hope Mara doesn't start getting type casted

    by kevinmuller

First, she kicked ass in "Dragon" and would be an upset if she on in February. Hey, no one though Brody would win, considering who he was up against that year. It was a Holocaust movie though.

I just hope she doesn't start playing the one role of the dark and mysterious girl. I know she is capable of much more.

Steve made a good choice replacing her for Lively, who I think should stay on television, though I did like her in "The Town".

Man, Soderbergh has it figured out.

    by vameon

He can just get the money to make whatever movie he wants, get any actor he wants and he is even his own DP.

It would be my dream to be a filmmaker like him, fail or succeed, he has so much control on what he wants to do.

Holy shit, that comment was great. I think she is very appreciative of the attention she is getting from that role. Before this she was kind of the plain old good girl in movies. (Which I liked her better as, but that is me). She is just embracing her bad side I guess. Hope it isn't forever though.

    by adelai niska

The money-men would not pony up for a movie that stars Blake Lively, so she had to be replaced in order to get fundage.

    by mullah omar

Maybe he's there to deflect attention from Zeta-Jones' acting.

She's gotta be happy to know in advance that she's not the weakest link here.

    Probably.

Rooney Mara? Somebody pointed it out right that she needs to quit running around thinking she's really Lisbeth Salander.

Meant to say that a four days dead Nicol Williamson has better voice inflection than a perceivably healthy and alive Channing Tatum.

What does coming from money have to do with acting?

    by jaka

Other than the fact that many, MANY actors and actresses have done so. It's in no way new or unique. Good acting is good acting. Doesn't matter how much money you have. By that logic no actor or actress should be able to play a badass after they've had a couple big paychecks.

Although the casting couch is generally gone for women

    by dougmckenzie

It's still there for men, and I have a strong suspicion that Tatum bends over for a number of roles.

He is easily one of the shittiest actors I have ever seen. He has no idea how to emote properly, or even which emotions are proper for the scene is is playing. He's dull as shit and more monotone than Henry Kissinger. You see him get cast and wonder if Hollywood has lost its mind, but really it's blown its load.

I hope the Soderbergh retirement rumors are false

    by nasty in the pasty

Even Soderbergh's misses are more interesting that most Hollywood dreck, and he's always trying out new genres. Contagion was one of last year's best movies.

    by aquatarkusman

At one time an interesting director, now not so much. The turning point: compare The Limey to Ocean's 19 or however many fucking sequels he made to that warmed-over dreck. I don't think he has a great movie in him, even if he does bore us to death with five hours of Che.
