The Behind the Scenes Pic of the Day features Chaplin in the snow!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with today’s Behind the Scenes Pic!
It’s always a bit tricky posting silent behind the scenes images as I can’t rely on movie quotes for my tricksy headlines and teases at the end of each article, but Chaplin’s The Gold Rush is one of my favorites from this era (although it doesn’t edge out The General. Sorry, Charlie) and this pic is pretty great, especially when you consider it’s 87-88 years old now.
You know, this film was released almost 20 years after it came out, with added score (composed by Chaplin himself, with Max Ter) and voice over narration. And it won Oscars for it! With all the convoluted bullshit rules in place now you’d never see something like that happen today.
Anyway, that’s a nice little bit of trivia to along with this rad-ass pic!

If you have a behind the scenes shot you’d like to submit to this column, you can email me at quint@aintitcool.com.
Oh, goody! We’re getting another Behind the Scenes Pic tomorrow!

That's not Chaplin, it's his stand-in Muggins McGraw-----and that's not snow. It's very cold sand.

Just wanted to be one of those twats. Carry on. Nice pic.

Christ, must we have one of you on every thread. Lloyd made some better sequences than Chaplain--Charlie was a true filmmaker. His movies were much, much better as a whole--and he is remembered as a genius director as a reason--the other guy--not so much. Stop watching youtube clips of their work and actually watch an entire film and you would know this.

Far too many on this site view douchebaggery their raison d'être.

yay those are the only movies that are good, or ever even exist. WHITE PEOPLE MOVIES! I can just about guarantee that 99.9% of these movies you have shown were directed by White Men. whats funny is you dont even recognize you are being racially biased. doesnt even fucking dawn on you. this site fucking sucks.

Thanks, Quint! Just when you think you've seen everything.... you can come here and see something new, from the past. And like this one, almost always amazing and unexpected. Great job, man.

They look really functional.

There's a reason no one wanted to pay for Red Tails.

Thomas Edison himself!

And yes, The General rules!

While Chaplin's technical expertise is staggering he simply never made me laugh. I can admire his work, but just don't love it.
-
Then you, sir, need to get a healthy sense of humor.

daytripper69: I know it's weird - he's the ONLY silent star who doesn't tickle my chuckle bone

Used to adore BUSTER KEATON, HAROLD LLOYD, KEYSTONE KOPS et al. And they're still a joy to watch when I manage to catch them again (especially LAUREL & HARDY, although I guess they're more talkies). But CHAPLIN is technical perfection, awesomely clever and admirable, but I just sit there quietly impressed rather than roaringly entertained. Don't think I'm the only one either. Just honest.

You bitch!!!! This isn't about You, or who you think is better, Fuck you and your shitty replies.. Chaplin was a fucking GOD!!!

from The Jazz Singer? Just to piss off JonathanKana?

That's what I think of Chaplin/Keaton/Lloyd, you have to open your mind to the comedy. Unfortunately, I'm trawling through the Keystone Chaplins and The Essanays, and there ain't much to love here.

Is clearly Billy West.
