Is Pee Wee Herman criticizing films for Charlie Kaufman's FRANK OR FRANCIS?

Published at:  Jan 27, 2012 11:41:48 PM CST

Hello ladies and gentlemen, Muldoon here with a piece of cool casting news via VARIETY which claims Paul Reubens (PEE WEE'S BIG ADVENTURE) has just signed on to Charlie Kaufman's new movie, FRANK OR FRANCIS. He'll be taking on the role of "an old-school film critic" alongside Elizabeth Banks (ZACK AND MIRI), Nicolas Cage (ADAPTATION), Kevin Kline (THE ICE STORM), Steve Carell (40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN), Jack Black (TENACIOUS D), and Catherine Keener (BEING JOHN MALKOVICH).

The film is a musical satire poking fun of Hollywood in the age of the internet blogger. The flick centers on Steve Carell's character, a fancy pretentious film director, getting into a heavy dispute with Jack Black's character, an internet blogger who still lives at home.

The film sounds like a lot of fun. With the addition of Mr. Reubens, the incredible cast on board, and the fact that Kaufman's steering it - I'm sure it'll be far from your average comedy.

...an internet blogger who still lives at home.

Hollywood is SOOOOOO original I almost forgot to laugh.

Let me guess, he's going to be a nerdy guy who is a loser in real life but is a god among men online or so he thinks, he likes sci-fi stuff, has no girlfriend or if he does she's gonna be one ugly passive waste of time, and if he has a job at all it's in a video store or a fast food place or a dry cleaners or something like that.

OH THIS SHIT JUST WRITES ITSELF!

    SEEN IT BEFORE.

Do you have something to share Crazy Larry?

Pee-wees Big Adventure, still cracks me up.

I like the cast of this, and the director.

Betcha, it is going to be good. Or, at least strange.

Predict this ends up being Charlie Kaufman's 'great failure'

    by spaghettiwall

I mean, 'Human Nature' was a failure but he didn't direct it.

As for Synecdoche, New York? Well, it wasn't that good either (despite what Roger tells you) but imagine a guy who can't even write music getting behind the camera and doing something WORSE.

    Synedoche, Ny

    by kevinmuller

I will consider that a side step for Mr. Kaufman. Every year there is a film that I disagree with the critics with. This year it is "Tinker, Tailor Soldier, Spy"...in 2008 it was that piece of shit.

Listen, I love film and constantly have to defend my love for good film with my friends who are your average movie goers. I don't mean that as an insult either. I enjoy mainstream films from time to time.

Pretentious is not even the word for Synedoche, Ny. I hated that film so much. It was smug and cold.

Synecdoche, NY was not for everyone, sure...

    by trainedmonkey88

For me though, it hit me like a ton of bricks. Its pure originality was awe inspiring. No one can say they have ever seen a movie like that, because a movie like that has never existed. I can understand how it can rub people the wrong way, though, as it is a challenging experience, but how anyone can think that somehow, with this new movie, Charlie Kaufman is going to suddenly start relying on pure cliché is baffling to me. Do you not know who Charlie Kaufman is? A new Charlie Kaufman movie is always something to look forward to. He is one of the few writers working today that is truly trying to find something new to say.
