Willem Dafoe takes on the last Tasmanian Tiger in THE HUNTER

Published at:  Jan 27, 2012 2:00:51 PM CST

Hello ladies and gentlemen, Muldoon here with a story that grabbed my attention from the badasses over at COLLIDER. Check out the new poster for Willem Dafoe's THE HUNTER along with the film's trailer over at Apple.

"THE HUNTER is the story of Martin, a skilled and ruthless mercenary sent into the Tasmanian wilderness on a hunt for a tiger believed to be extinct. Hired by an anonymous company that wants the tiger’s genetic material, Martin arrives in Tasmania posing as a scientist. He proceeds to set up base camp at a broken-down farmhouse, where he stays with a family whose father has gone missing. Usually a loner, Martin becomes increasingly close to the family; however, as his attachment to the family grows, Martin is led down a path of unforeseen dangers, complicating his deadly mission."

The fim's directed by Daniel Netthein (ANGST) and stars Willem DeFoe (BOONDOCK SAINTS), Frances O'Connor (A.I.) and Sam Neill (JURASSIC PARK!) and hits cinemas April 6th, but will be available on VOD starting March 2nd.

Personally I dig the hell out of this new poster versus this guy here:

DaFoe hardly lets me down and the fact that Dr. Alan Grant is in it... I'm there, how about you guys?

    Not a tiger.

    by mrd

Tasmanian tiger is a misnomer. It is a marsupial, more closely related to kangaroos and opossums than to lions, tigers, or Mr. Fluffykins.

    Willem Dafoe (BOONDOCK SAINTS)

    by fustfick

Of all the movies to associate with Willem Dafoe...they pick BOONDOCK SAINTS? Really?
I get that this is a good pick if you're Sean Patrick Flanery. But Willem Dafoe's been in lots of GOOD movies. And some genuine boxoffice sensations.

Willem Dafoe (SPEED 2: CRUISE CONTROL).

Anyhow, THE HUNTER sounds interesting. And Dafoe is pretty terrific.

But there have been many many sightings since then.

A biologically "fresh" one (and quite dead)was found in a cave in the 60's

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vqCCI1ZF7o

and grainy Bigfoot camera footage from 2009

    I love these guys.

Think giant carniverous mouse dog with a jaw that opens riduculously huge.
Not to mention zebra stripes and a tail that comes to a point like a rat.

Boondock Saints was almost as bad as Ghost Rider.

Here's an extinct species that we actually have film footage of that nobody's seen in the flesh for like 150 years, and there's never been a documentary on it or a feature film. The fuck is up with that?

In the second poster I was like "that icon up top isn't what tigers are supposed to look like."

Then I did a google search and found out what Tasmanian Tigers look like. This image is consistent with how their mouths can open:

We learn something new every day. At any rate, I like the new poster much better than the old one.

Those two got the joke. Some of the other participants, like Jim Jarmusch, just seemed confused by the concept.

Yeah totally. Jim had a couple of funny stories but that was my least favorite. The 2 part Dennis Hopper episode was funny but it should have been one. God, I could watch a show like that forever. John Lurie was onto something. I could see this show being on today on a channel like Adult Swim or something coming on at 2 in the morning and having an awesome following. Oh if only....

Go back and watch boondock saints again.... Dafoe stole the show. Muldoon could have mentioned Shadow of the Vampire, Platoon, or Mississippi Burning but its definitely not a dig on the dude to mention him in Saints. "There was a firefiiiiiiiiiiight!!!!" Great actors find a way to be great even in mediocre films. This guy is just a great actor period...and I think we can all agree on that.

I will be look a bit strangely at Willem Dafoe in a forrest after Anti-Christ... especially since he's acting alongside the REAL anti-Christ from The Omen 3...

Having said that, this seems like a film worth watching. Sounds like a very interesting and promising story. Fingers crossed that it ends up being like the 1st poster and not the 2nd...

between those two posters is hilarious! The new one says "I've got you in my sights, tiger!" while the old one is more "Don't worry, I'll find your pet tiger, kids!". Possibly with the Sound of Music in the background.

    Dafoe is great though.

the tasmanian tigers were actually marsupials, not felines.

    by asimovlives

Calling them tigers was a misnouner. Their superficial and scant physiological similiaritudes to tigers was a case of evolutionary convergence.

And sorry, but they are all extincts. The last one died in captivity in a zoo in the early 20th century.
