Check out Benicio Del Toro blowing smoke in Blake Lively's face for SAVAGES

Published at:  Jan 27, 2012 1:39:46 PM CST

Hello ladies and gentlemen, Muldoon here with a pic from Oliver Stone's SAVAGES that's been floating around the net today via this article from EMPIRE. The film's based on the crime novel of the same name by Don Winslow and tells the story two amatuer pot growers (a grad student: Aaron Johnson and an ex-Navy Seal: Taylor Kitsch) who get in over their heads with the Mexican cartel when the cartel steals their shared girlfriend "O" (Blake Lively). The plot feels more like a soap opera with drugs, but as Kitsch told EMPIRE it's more of "PULP FICTION meets GOODFELLAS."

The film boasts an incredible cast with Taylor Kitsch (JOHN CARTER), Aaron Johnson (KICK ASS), Blake Lively (GREEN LANTERN), Uma Thurman (BATMAN AND ROBIN), Salma Hayek (TRAFFIC), Trevor Donovan (SURROGATES), John Travolta (GREASE), Emile Hirsch (SPEED RACER), Benicio Del Toro (FEAR AND LOATHING), and Joel David Moore (AVATAR) and is set to be released September 28th.

Here's hoping the film's more PULP FICTION than BE COOL with Thurman and Travolta onboard. The pic below is "O" with (as you might have guessed) a member of the Mexican Cartel.

Oliver Stone likes to go slumming from time to time.

    by marvelousd

Especially when his more serious films that attempt to comment on US power in world affairs don't get as much positive attention. Anybody remember U-Turn? He's probably tired of the likes of Scorsese, Tarantino, Refn and the like getting most of the attention for their stylized depictions of realistic violence.

This movie could be pretty good though, because I've been waiting for a heavy weight director to take on a serious depiction of Mexican drug cartels. The level of corruption, violence, and brutality of those cartels far surpasses everything we've come to expect from feuding gangsters, and yet we still think of Goodfellas or Pulp Fiction when it comes to gangsters. Oliver Stone has the stones to do something with stones, so let's hope he doesn't fuck it up by watering it down, Hollywoodizing it up, or politicizing it to the extent it's more didactic than entertaining.

Stone you bastard! Make a gangster flick with some real balls!

I mean you have Woody Harrelson doing his first fantastic turn as Mickey Knox. All that people knew him from before that was Cheers. Now look at all he gives us. (Zombieland, The Messenger)

Juliette Lewis, though annoying at times, provided the other half to his insanity. And Downey did his Australian schtick in this years before his Oscar worthy performance in Tropic Thunder.

Tom Sizemore and Tommy Lee Jones brought the awesomeness but that's not news. They usually do that.

Some people may have considered it over the top on all the stuff going on but I loved every minute of it. And Steven Wrights small cameo is in a league of it's own. "I never really believe what women tell me." LMAO

Question for any well-read Don Winslow fans out there...

    by captaincosmos

I wanna put one of his books in my Kindle queue.
Any opinions on which might be his best novel?

I used to live in San Diego, so some of the ones set there are appeailing.
That said, don't want to base my first choice solely on setting.

    Best Don Winslow novel... anyone?
    Anyone...?

There's a side shot where you can clearly see her face and a breast.

Also, her body is pretty distinctive. If you watch Frida, that's the same body... unless they found a body double that looks exactly like Salma Hayek, which would not be easy. She wasn't a star so I doubt they'd go to all that trouble on a low budget movie.

    Captaincosmos: Recommended Don Winslow books

    by jeffthx

I don't read many authors, but I've read several of his books. My favorites have been:

    The Power of the Dog
    Savages
The Winter of Frankie Machine (I thought this was supposed to become a DeNiro movie)

I also read The Dawn Patrol and its semi-sequel, The Gentlemen's Hour. They're somewhat lighter than the first two on the list above.

The Death and Life of Bobby Z was pretty good, but the movie was pretty bad (just called Bobby Z).

I don't know that I'd start with The Power of the Dog. Maybe go with Savages first. TPOTD is a bit more epic in scale. You may want to build to it.

And we've seen her face AND tits in the same shot in several movies, so no body doubling going on there.

    Captain Cosmos (and jeffthx)

    by somerichs

Savages was great. Violent, brutal, intense, sexy (or maybe just sexual, been a while since I read it), but great.

I enjoyed The Death and Life of Bobby Z, too, but like jeff said, the movie was DTV garbage.

I actually like the casting of Blake for O, I'm much less thrilled about Taylor Kitsch as one of the two dudes (forget his name). Aaron could work well for the other part.

Meanwhile, CC, if you're looking for books that take place in San Diego, check out T. Jefferson Parker. He used to live in Laguna Beach for a lot of years and nearly all of his books during that time take place in OC. He's since move to Fallbrook, and most of his books now take place in San Diego. He's one of my favs, got some really killer books (Where Serpents Lie and The Blue Hour were the two that got me hooked initially) and has a whole series of books that take place in and around the Mexican border and deal with the Mexican cartels, drug trade, and whatnot.

Also (goes for jeff, too), if you like Don Winslow, check out Kem Nunn, he's written 3 or 4 books. Reminds me of Don Winslow only in that he incorporates surfing into a few of them. In fact, one of his books served as the inspiration for the classic movie Point Break. Don't let that scare you off, though, it's actually nothing like the movie. As you read, you can kind of see the jumping-off points for the movie, but really it's not too similar beyond that...

Your thoughts are very much appreciated.

    Maybe I'll start w/ Savages.
I'd been leaning toward Dawn Patrol or Frankie Machine, due to the familiar locales, but if they're lighter in tone, maybe I'd be better served with Savages.

Somerichs -- thanks for the tip on T. Jefferson Parker. I'll have to check him out.
Your mention of the Fallbrook area cracked me up. I used to live in Vista (total shit hole of a town, imo) and assistant managed a country club in Bonsall (right next to Fallbrook) for a few years in the mid-'90s.
Too funny. I'll look into Parker's stuff, for sure.

    Thanks again, guys.
