A (Not Really) Reunion Movie For The Monty Python Gang??

Published at:  Jan 27, 2012 1:02:15 PM CST

Merrick here...

There's a CGI / live action science fiction film coming our way which isn't being formally touted as a "Monty Python reunion!," although it has a few kinda/sorta elements of one.

Mike Medavoy (BLACK SWAN, SHUTTER ISLAND, ZODIAC) is a producer on ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING which Terry Jones is directing.  Jones previously helmed Python's THE MEANING OF LIFE and THE LIFE OF BRIAN, as well as co-directing MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL with Terry Gilliam.  As an unrelated side note, he also directed an episode of THE YOUNG INDIANA JONES CHRONICLES.

Per THIS piece in Variety...

...the Pythons voicing key roles as a a group of aliens who endow an earthling with the power to do "absolutely anything" to see what a mess he'll make of things -- which is precisely what happens. There's also a talking dog named Dennis who seems to understand more about the mayhem that ensues than anyone else does. Robin Williams will voice the character.

[EDIT]

"Anything" is based on a script developed by Jones and Gavin Scott over the past two decades.

[EDIT]

Jones...said Gilliam and Python members John Cleese and Michael Palin have agreed to perform and added that producers are attempting to sign Eric Idle.

Current plans have the filming rolling in the U.K this Spring, for a budget of $15-20 million (per TheWrap, where you can glean a few more details).

It's all about as funny as anything Mel Brooks has done which means it sucks ass. Why ppl think this shit is side splitting material use to be a mystery but then I realized they feel obligated to laugh whether they want to or not because they're mindless slugs who have been told it's funny.

They were up to another movie, John Cleese said no

    by ricarleite4

For two reasons, he said it would not be the same without Chapman, and he thought doing another Python movie would be "repeating himself". I say it's nonsense. Meaning of Life was a TERRIBLE ending to the Python saga, they need another one: the search for Chapman's ashes!

Main character casting - bad news

    by daggor

When I read about this project over a year ago, it suggested John Oliver would be the main character. This, by the way, would be awesome.

Now it's this Sanjeev Bhaskar guy. Fuck that. I'm not paying to see a Python cameo and deal with this guy for an hour and a half.

    I repeat: Fuck. That.

  • ...and I doubt anything could ever top the original with Roland Young, one of my all-time favourites. Of course, it was already remade twice with Carrey and Carrell. It'll be interesting to see if Jones & the Python team can keep it unmistakeably British. He should get Gilliam on board for sure.

Three words: Good Will Hunting. Robin Williams is insufferable 99% of the time, but very occasionally a director can get a performance out him that doesn't suck donkey.

I believe that's "The Meaning of Life". To Python haters, I guess there are those who just "don't get" English humor or Mel Brooks as well. For me they were essential to my childhood and they still make me laugh even after having seen all the old Mel Brroks films and Monty Python films/tv shows as well. It's just sad, like others have voiced, that many will not know its a "semi" reunion. Yes, Chapman will be sorely missed. And remember "every sperm is sacred, every speem is good..." and "it's only a flesh wound"

  • It's called "The Crimson Permanent Assurance", and it concerns a bunch of downtrodden insurance employees who mutiny against their bosses, and turn their little office building into a pirate ship of sorts. They then sail off into the financial district of a large city, where they sack and pillage big banks and finance companies. Pretty funny stuff, especially in this day and age.
