Hey folks, Harry here... had a busy morning & afternoon plotting some future awesome for AICN and checking out a film that I can't quite talk about at the moment, but I came home to an interesting email from a reader I'll refer to as The Keymaster. Seems the Keymaster was tearing through ebay, as a geek is prone to do. Probably looking up SUPERMAN or MAN OF STEEL and he came across this curious auction.
Apparently the seller has laid hands on some of the props from the Kent Farm Smallville Set, and he had one up for sale. It isn't particularly spectacular. BUT here's the image the seller put up:
That seems to be the clearest most dynamic shot I've seen from MAN OF STEEL, but in particular, I like that he's looking at the piece of set like... WHAT THE HELL IS THAT? I do miss the briefs. I do. But at least it isn't as atrocious as a humanoid faced LIZARD. Sigh. Pretty cool?

this character has such limited potential to be interesting its not even funny. Batman is so complex he can be done by Burton, Schumacher (Batman Forever) and Nolan and still be interesting to watch. But I don't know how many times we can watch such a boy scout character until it becomes dull.

One of the most important aspects of a superhero movie. Most comic book films are cut too quickly and don't pause to give us that panel feel. Snyder will slow things down..literally ;)

The Story writers say they got rid of the shorts, because they looked stupid and impractical... Really.. and wtf do you call boots with openings OUTSIDE of the suit he wears??? Did ANYONE bother to think.. "Geee.. won't these balloon up with air and get yanked off when he flies any faster then a walk?" It's something you may not expect at first, but the bright red underpants call less attention to the crotch area than none at all.

I really don't care for what's going on in the comics right now, and I seriously hope that is not the track this new production is taking. Clark's parents are integral to who Superman is, and the comics have robbed the character of that humanity. Regardless, that is far and away the best shot of Cavill in the Supes get-up. I want this to be good (I never want anything to be bad), but Snyder's busy camera and drab imagery makes me nervous. All the color is sucked out of Supe's suit; that's bad. Yet Nolan is good. Nolan is very, very good and my hope for this film hinges on his involvement. And what it is the aversion to the undies? They've been trying to eradicate super-hero undies for 20 years and they've finally succeeded.

I don't see anything complex about Batman. He's dark and brooding and blah blah - he's the same in every film, a stiff. He's conflicted over this, torn over that, doesn't emote... and has a completely crazy stable of villains. Without that, no way there's so many films. And the gadgets don't hurt, either.

Superman wears short shorts. After looking at several months of "The New 52" and the various images of Zach Snyder's Superman, one thing has become very clear to me... Superman is not Superman without the red undies. He just doesn't read as Superman visually anymore. Superman is iconic. Everybody knows what he looks like, even if they couldn't draw a picture of him. What's more important though is that they know what he doesn't look like. Whenever I see Cavill in the suit or read JL or any of the other DC books with his mandarin collar suit, I have to remind myself who it is. (Plus the change in hair style has made Kal-El completely indistinguishable from Bruce Wayne) Snyder has taken this mistake two steps further in not only removing the man-panties, but also muting the color and adding ornamentation(?) to the cuff, waist and boots. I think Henry Cavill is perfect casting. I hope that Snyder can somehow avoid the visual and narrative problems of Watchmen. But this costume "re-imagining" was pure ego. Anyone who thinks they can overcome 70+ years of media saturation with their "vision" is completely deluded. I think the red panties will be back sooner than later in the comics. It's unfortunate Snyder has seized upon this passing fancy for his movie.

They changed the suit for no reason other than to be "modern" I guess. Lame excuse and it only makes him look odd. They are using old villains that we've already seen in a previous movie. *yawn* And, as I understand it, they are changing the origin story a bit and making him more "brooding". Sorry, that aint the "boy scout" that we all grew up with. If I want brooding, I'll go watch Batman. I predict this Superman movie will bomb worse than the "metroman returns" flop. Why oh why can't they make a good Superman? Because Hollywood is bankrupt on original ideas and they are also tied down by political correctness. You all know it's true.

...it's written all over that assymetrical, ugly, and overly modified costume. Translate supes as is, in all his goody-two shoes, dorky glory or don't do him at all. I'm sure this will be a good film but modifications to the suit alone are enough to dampen my interest. Maybe one day DC will get its own Favreau or Raimi who are willing to faithfully interpret these characters into the modern world without compromising the characters themselves.

Like most on here, I think I can tell a piece of painted concept art, even if it's done digitally, from a photograph and THIS picture of Superman is photographic. I don't think it's A photograph, though, but likely a frame from one of the behind-the-scenes videos that have popped up online - probably from a stunt rehearsal session - blended with what appears to be a backround resembling, say, the "New Krypton" floor from Superman Returns. If it were painted, it would likely be more dynamic in its color saturation and maybe a bit less detailed. Also, even though we know they're not using the red underpants, this isn't quite the COMPLETE costume because you can see a sort of imprint in the blue bodysuit where something looking like a belt would usually go. Also, there may still be something red to cover the "crotch" area, itself (which I know sounds a lot funnier than it really is). Finally, there doesn't seem to be ANYTHING about this alleged prop to speak to its validity. At most, it looks like some kid might have used a woodburning kit to carve into it a Kryptonian symbol, but even that's arguable. Frankly, I think the whole posting is a fake, and if it's not, I'd be surprised if Warners doesn't demand it removed ASAP. We don't even know what the font will look like for the title yet! It's way too early for people to either be getting their hands on and selling legitimate props, let alone for anyone to be getting away with it.

It's pretty safe to guarantee it will be better than whatever the hell Superman Lives was going to be and it may be at a magnitude of thousands, perhaps millions, of time better, but infinitely... tall order. I hope that Man of Steel is good, but I feel like I'm having to swallow a few too many pills to have any confidence it will be.
