L.A. Readers! Kenneth Lonergan's MARGARET Begins One-Week Run At The Cinefamily This Friday, January 27th! Don't Miss It!

Beaks here...
By the time Kenneth Lonergan's MARGARET finally, quietly found its way to U.S. theaters in September of 2011, most critics didn't so much review the film as look for signs of turmoil. Shot in 2005, trapped in editorial/legal limbo for five years, and dumped by Fox Searchlight in the middle of prestige season, Lonergan's follow-up to YOU CAN COUNT ON ME just had to be a debacle. But as the movie breezed through the nation's top markets via obligatory two-week engagements, a tiny minority of critics and cinephiles fell in love. What had been dismissed as a disaster was actually one of the most challenging American movies since the 1970s; it was brilliantly written, defiantly ambiguous and passionately performed (and my second-favorite movie of the year).
But just as MARGARET was poised for a word-of-mouth resurgence, it disappeared from theaters.
Obviously, a nationwide re-release is out of the question, but if you're going to be in the Los Angeles area between January 27th and February 2nd, you need to make it a priority to drop by the Cinefamily during its exclusive one-week run of MARGARET. And make sure you bring friends, because you'll need to grab a coffee or a drink afterwards to discuss the film's myriad ideas and provocations. I know I'm being hyperbolic, but I'm confident that most of you will be grateful to have experienced this unique film in a theater.
Tickets and other pertinent info can be purchased/located at the Cinefamily's official site. And while you're there, you should also pick up tickets for their one-week run of Ben Wheatley's deeply disturbing KILL LIST, which begins on February 3rd.

If this is scheduled for DVD release soon, I'll wait. If the DVD release is in limbo, I'll go.

Just get a load of that movie! It starts out as a tough domestic drama, turns into a Hit-Men on the Loose/run epic, and then.....you have to see it to believe where it ends up.

one of the few movies I was actually awaiting to see in theaters.... Miami never gets this lucky

Rented it off amazon. Holy shit. Watched it twice now. That was a work of genius. Sometimes an artist only gets one, and sometimes they happen by accident, but that is one.

Saw Margaret tonight. It was great.
