Houston! This Saturday You Will Believe A Kid Can Pie At BUGSY MALONE! Alamo Kids Club!

Published at:  Jan 25, 2012 7:40:18 PM CST

Nordling here.

Man, it's been years since I've seen BUGSY MALONE.  I'm talking, since I was a kid.  And no, I won't do the math for you, but it's been a while.  Scott Baio, Jodie Foster, some gangster action, and a lot of cream pies.  Alan Parker's children's farce plays like a real gangster movie from Hollywood's heyday, but instead of automatic gunfire we get lots and lots of cream puffs and custard.

But we also get songs by Paul "Rainbow Connection" Williams, and this GODFATHER for kids will be playing this Saturday at the Alamo Drafthouse Mason Park at noon.  It's going to be a lot of fun, and if they've got planned what I think they've got planned... well, you may get wet.  Just saying.  Okay, I don't know if you'll get wet, but I wouldn't be surprised if some spontaneous pie-by shootings happen.  As always, tickets are free for the Alamo Kids Club and bring the kids for a grand time!

Next month, the Alamo Kids Club dives into a bonafide classic - can't reveal the title yet because it hasn't been completely squared away, but it's one of Harry's favorite films and it's certain to hit the target.  Thanks for coming, Houston!  As always, thanks to 8th Dimension Comics and Games - like them on Facebook! - and the Alamo Drafthouse!

Nordling, out.  Follow me on Twitter!

What a great musical from the 70's

    by iamatroll

I used to watch "Bugsy Malone" almost every time it was shown on HBO. (This was back in the old days when HBO was only on so many hours out of the day.) It was the gangster story, as performed by kids, that led me to epics such as "The Godfather" and it's ilk. Then there were the songs, written by Little Enos Burdett himself, Paul Williams. Just magical. Songs like "We're The Very Best At Being Bad" and it's glorious reprise at the conclusion of the film lifted my young spirits. I'd love to see a reimagining of this today, but we all know how Hollyweird loves to bastardize things, and we'd all hate it. So, let's just love and revisit this gem the way we remember it, and marvel at the acting chops of young Jodie Foster. Just by watching this, you could tell she was bound for greatness...

Bugsy Malone and Phantom of the Paradise make for a great double feature on a rainy afternoon.

    One of my favorite soundtracks!

    by wonkabar

Still listen to it all the time. I'm surprised that some of it hasn't been sampled. 'So You Wanna Be Boxer' has a great little groove. I can't believe this hasn't been released on DVD yet. I have a Japanese import....but I'd really like to have a US Blu-ray realese soon...gee-wiz what gives man???

    Paul William's Voice . .

    by sluggolicious

Like everyone else, I watched the VHS of this when I was a kid until the tape tore apart. I loved how the same male and female singing voice was used to dub EVERY character.

    Pedal cars

    by darkgrafix

I loved this movie as a kid and still listen to the soundtrack and even attempted to build a classic pedal car from the film. Got as far as the chassis. Would have been cool but couldn't find the right supplies from the local construction sites.

  • ...The adult voices singing always threw me off while I did enjoy Baio and Foster's chemistry together. I remember liking it for what it was though I haven't seen it since. I can see how this didn't do that well in double bill with "The Bad News Bears" since it seems so gimmicky in comparison. Plus Tatum O'Neal is just waaay better pedo-bait in BNB than Jodie Foster is in this movie or Taxi Driver for that matter.
