Lex's Loveshack?

thanks to Fountainhead for finding this!

thanks to the Gloose (and Robogeek for tech assist.)

thanks goes to Robogeek ingenuity

Hey folks, Harry here. I've had multiple sources e-me that some folks with Superman's production scouting team have been circling about Houston and specifically eyeing this REPUBLIC NATIONAL BANK building. Originally, when Tim Burton was in charge of this project there was an amazing building in Pittsburgh that they were going to use... but INSPECTOR GADGET (a steaming pile of feces) used it for Claw's headquarters, so they are looking for a new location. I wonder what this building looks like?

This source told me that the production team for 'Superman' was recently in Houston and was
scouting for a location to use as Lex Luthor's headquarters (LexCorp) and Houston's
Republic National Bank building (exterior shots) was getting VERY SERIOUS
consideration!

FX can turn any city to Metropolis.

    by roborob

Can you really tell if the first Batman was shot in the UK? I can't. Did the city in The Matrix look Like OZ? No. Modern Architecture of the western world is very similar I know I am a Trained Building Engineer, I help design these buildings. Houstan, if I remember correctly is a Major city of the Western World. It's Sky Scrapers look like any other and todays FX can disguise any thing that looks out of place. With the exception of Nick Cage who just does not have the right physique to be The Man of Steel.

    I luv Superman!

    by mr.grumpy

I side with the lame-ass fanboys here, there's nothing more exciting than an invincible superhero. Usually the suspense bothers me, but knowing its practically impossible to take down Supes eases my mind when watching the movie. I loved the friggin Crow for the same reason, it was brilliant work. Oh, sorry, my sarcasm switch was on, its fixed now. Comic books and comic book movies SUCK HARD! The only redeeming quality of Blade was that blonde chick (German I think, but I won't hold that against her). At least Superman is so lame I probably won't get that many death threats from fat fanboys over this one. Thank BigLarz for small favors, huh? I know for a fact though that every Halloween BigLarz dresses up as Superman and accessorizes by putting a banana in his spandex. I have pictures. DMFC is probably praying for Nic Cage to play Superman since Nic is the poster-boy of sell-out tools. Whatever, its my boy Dan's birthday, and we gots drinking to do. Have fun in cyber-space nerds. Suck it.

At least, not since "Robocop 2", when the city was renamed "Detroit". C'mon Harry, you're a fellow Texan; you should know this. I've been a fan of Superman pretty much all my life, the movies and the comics (especially recently with the new creative teams on the books) and as hard as it is for me to grasp Nick Cage as Superman, I can live with it. The way Hollywood is today, we're lucky WWF's The Rock isn't playing him. I just wish I could get a copy of this new script before I go nuts. After hearing about what Jon Peters wanted to do with Kevin Smiths draft, I wouldn't trust the guy to shit in the same building that the keep the script in.

    by pickledpunk

Whats the point of making ANOTHER Superman movie so soon? I still get a kick out of the old one and cant see WHY Hollywood wants to do one NOW(of course I do but I dont have enough space to put all the $ signs in). Chris Reeves was, in my opinion, excellent in the role. The special fx and story line still do quite nicely today. What MORE could you possibly get out of this project? Why not shoot OTHER projects about OTHER superheroes that we would like to see? Whats the matter, Hollywood...afraid to take a chance? Afraid to be a bit creative? Seems as though they spend WAY too much time riding the coat-tails of other ENTERTAINING projects and refuse to let any REAL creativity and entertainment thrive. HERE IT NOW FOLKS: This ones gonna sink...HA!

    by maul99

If this film is ever made, Kevin Spacey must be Lex Luthor or the film will automatically suck. The guy was born to play Lex, hands down. Chris Rock needs to be Jimmy......and if they let Sandra Bullock play Lois I'm gonna fucking puke. Even somebody like Courtney Cox would be much, MUCH better. But, alas, with that mega-idiot Peters in charge....damn, why the hell is this man allowed in Hollywood....better yet, why the fuck is he attached to this project?

Sorry you don't agree with comics going to movies. If you had read any decent comics, perhaps you'd feel differently. Theatre plays have been made into movies. Novels have been made into movies. Autobiographies as well. Just because there have been few examples of GOOD comic book movies doesn't mean it can't be done... I'm not sticking up for either the X-Men or Superman, I haven't seen them and don't pretend to know if they're going to be worth a shit or not, but don't gripe about the whole industry in general. That's pretty closed minded and quite frankly an ignorant comment. If you would like to pick up a GOOD comic, try some of Garth Ennis' Preacher novels... damn thing has me addicted like a daytime soap!

    Cage and Supes

    by bionicdave

There was a story in the trades a while back on how Nic Cage graciously returned his "Superman" contract fee to Warners, knowing the project would never get off the ground. That was also the day I did a merry jig, because Cage is the scariest, stupidest and OLDest actor they could get for the part. Honestly, this casting choice marks one of those times when I truly feel like my childhood heroes are being raped (no lube) by Hollywood. To hear Cage speak on the topic, it's clear he wants to play BATMAN, not Supes - let him be dark, alienated, bitter, aged and brooding in Gotham City. Just keep Cage away from Metropolis, oh Gods of Entertainment! Pleeeez let something happen to this production as you so beautifully did with Burton's "Superman" project! Would Warners be willing to take public contribitions to boot Cage? I'd gladly donate $100, as would lots and lots of my friends! So what if it's bloodmoney - I'd rather be broke than have to live with twisted Cage portraying my childhood hero. I'd rather have... gulp... Freddie Prinze as Supes than the man Sean Penn called "a performer, not an actor."

    Houston IS Metropolis

    by slip mahoney

After living in Houston for seven years, I can tell you this: If you want a big, generic American city that can stand in for almost anywhere, H-town is the place! Houston's own personality has been almost completely covered-up by countless attempts to ape any good ideas other cities have had first. The result is almost like living in the Matrix. It all feels very familiar but-just-not-quite-right. Anyway, having a super-hero movie (even if it is about that big dullard Superman) filmed in Houston would rock!

    by eric draven

Smith's script was faithful to any Supes fan....
also, in Wizard, he picked who he would cast..
    Ben Affleck as Superman..
    Linda Fiorintino as Lios Lane....
Jack Nicholson as Lex (personally i think Spacey should be Lex)
Jason Mewes as Jimmy..tone down the language for this one, Jay...snoogans.
Joey Lauren Adams as Cat Grant.
John Mahoney (Fraiser's Dad on the tv show) as Perry White..excellent choice.
Michael Keaton as Batman - there was a small cameo by Batman that would have been money.
    Jason Lee as Brainiac...

Actually, Kevin Smith DID throw Nic Cage's name in...but for Brainiac...not Superman....

I think they should have let Smith do this film....the producers had to keep asking Kevin "who is Kal-El"? The producers also wanted Brainiac to have a ..get this...GAY robotic sidekick....a gay robot?????

And during a meeting, the producers told Kevin to omit a scene where Supes and Lios are on Mount Rushmore....it was a really good scene....Smith said he could trim it, but it was important to the characters to keep it...the producers said "hey...this movie isnt about the characters...its about how many toys we can sell"!

    Kill ignorant producers, i say!!!!

  • What's really convenient about shooting in Houston is that if you watch Arlington Road, you know that there is fifteen minute shortcut from Allen Parkway to the Jefferson Memorial. You have to do it just right, though, and that means a double-lane change, a quick u-turn, and a shitload of editing.

    by francie

I was in Houston a month ago and actually noted how horrendous that building is. Maybe Burton has only seen a picture of it. It's spires are worthy of Peter Keating. Also, a Metropolis usually requires more than five skyscrapers. Why don't they pick a building in a big city that has more atmosphere and less smog.

    Cage as Superman

    by cynic

I know I'm in the minority but I think Cage is a good choice for superman. He *does* have the physique as anyone who has ever seen him in 'Con Air' or That films with Caruso ( I think it was called ' Kiss Before dying' ) will know. He also has a lot of screen presence and with the exception of 'Peggy Sue got Married', I have enjoyed him in everything. Looks wise I think he looks more like Superman than Keaton looked like Bruce Wayne. Bruce Campbell looks more the part but he has neither the range nor the physique for the part ( Although I am a huge Campbell fan ). As long as The script is good ( the Smith script was terrible ) and the director is appropriate ( IMHO Robert Zemekis would be great ) this project could fly ( sorry ).

    by butterbur

...and a great place to make a movie. From my lofty 35th floor windows I can see not only this building, but where they filmed Robocop as well. From my backyard I can see the KC-135 used for the weightless scenes in Apollo 13 parked on the Ellington Field tarmac. All you Houstonians assembled here, while this building is tres cool and would serve well for a Lex HQ, is there anyone else here that thinks that Transco Tower over on the East Loop would just flamin' rock as the Daily Planet Building? That skyward-pointing glass finger just exudes major coolness, the only problem being that it stands alone in a non-downtown area -- no buildings even close to similar height nearby. Still, I hope they give it consideration. Butterbur

    by cynic

'Kiss of Death' that was it, Thanks Eric, that's been bugging me. I think my problem with the smith script ( As with Smith's writing in general ) is that he can't write action and his dialogue is sort of stilted and unbelievable. For the record I loved 'Clerks' and to a lesser degree 'Mallrats', so I'm not jumping on the anti-smith bandwagon. I am a superman fan ( not on a fanatical level ) and I read Smith's script and it just bored me. But hey, that's a personel opinion and that's all it is. There are better writer, writer/directors out there.

Keaton could (and did) play Batman (exceptionally well) because of the connotation his appearance gives. Cage gives this same implied feeling about his characters. I've never seen Cage and been able to visualize a honest boy scout type Superman. His brooding persona might be useful for a Bruce Wayne, but he sure as hell shouldn't try to be the Man of Steel. Gay robots, a disturbed Superman, downsized characters, why don't they just let Kevin rescue the movie...

I liked the rendition of Lex in WB's TAS, because it actually had Luthor as sort of this brutish, sexy character as opposed to a grumpy old man. Lex was a megalomaniac that got to the top on the backs of others, and there is NO WAY IN HELL he's going to let anyone knock him down. I also thought Mercy was a good addition as his chauffer and bodyguard. Lex Luther is an extremely important character in the comic book universe because he is the only HUMAN capable of challenging a superhero and coming out on top.

Drake...my problems with the Smith draft.

    by superninja

    1) The story starts at the END of the Superman story. They skip over all of the good ones 2) Luther playing second fiddle to Braniac? I don't think so. Doomsday? $hit villain, Braniac? Lame characterization there, 3)Jay and Silent Bob make cameos, 4) Lois and Clark are having an affair at the office? Lois is PREGNANT? (puleeze...). I'd like to see the characters fall in love first, 5) Death of Superman storyline just plain sucks, and so does the blocking out the sun project with Lex/Braniac 6) Lex combining with Braniac? Ughh..., 7) DO YOU NOTICE A PATTERN YET? There is too much going on in this script! Sure, if everyone had read Superman for the past ten years, then we'd all be fine. But the point is to reintroduce the character, not jump the gun by starting at the END of his story just to create something that is distinctly 90s - the Death of Superman. This character has soooo many stories to tell, and this is the best they can come up with? The only Superman movie that covered REAL Superman stories were I&II -- the rest were just trying to play off the fads of the time, especially the "supercomputer" one. What is wrong with just Supes vs Luther, the criminal mastermind? What about Darkseid with Wonderwoman as a love interest? Mettallo? Where's he at? Thank god for WB Animation, that's all...

and superninja...you may have either read the "revised" Smith script that he had to make changes to becuaes of the no-nothing producers, or you read another script....
Brainiac didnt combine with Luthor in Smiths...i read about that one, tho...they wanted to call it Luthiac....how shit is that? I think if done right, Doomsday would be cool...the only villian to ever defeat Superman would make for a great movie fight...in the comic, they were hitting eachother so hard, the glass on the buildings were shattering...that would be totally cool.
And Jay and SilentBob didnt have a SCRIPTED cameo in the script...unless Smith was planning on just a walk-on for them, i dont know, but theu werent in the script.
It was a really good script that took quite a realistic view of the characters...
Oh, and Lois wasent pregnant in Smith's scrpit either...that was the Luthiac one.

    Is bigger always better?

    by vegas

Maybe in inches, but the square miles is something else all together. I've lived in both Chicago and Houston, and I admit that the downtown area of Chicago is bigger than Houston's. However, the skyline of Chicago SUCKS compared to Houston's. Oh sure, they've got the Sears Tower and the John Hancock Building, but all of the 'scrapers are so boring looking. None of them have the feel that would be right for this movie, mainly because those buildings are much older than Houston's. Houston's skyline is relatively younger than those of L.A. and New York and Chicago, and as a result it is...what's the word? Sleek. There is a variety to the buildings, and a clean sleekness about them. If you doubt Houston's supriority over Chicago in terms of skyline, look no further than the CD cover of SATURATION by the Chicago band URGE OVERKILL. That skyline on the cover? Houston. (now if only they'd send us some air...)

    The costume will have nipples...Right??

    by dark knight

Just give me nipples baby, Yeah!!! Lets let Slutmacher direct and cast Arnold as Superman. Yeah that would be awesome. You could make his cape have a neon glow and what is a movie without a close-up of Lois Lane's ass as she puts on her pants.

You'll believe an icon can die...horribly

    by kingkrypton

As long as Jon Peters and Nic Cage are involved, this film will suck beyond all belief. The only way it could be any worse is if Burton reared his ugly head again. I'm disgusted that WB is letting a bunch of hacks violate the character rather than giving Superman to people who understand and respect the material. By going forward with peters and Cage, WB's only guaranteeing the death of Superman franchise. All I can do is bow my head in sorrow. Hail and farewell, Superman. You will be missed.

    Houston for 'Metropolis'?

    by fountainhead

Hi, folks! For those of you who don't live in Houston (like me and some of the other 'Talkbackers'!), here's a skyline shot of downtown Houston (credit photo: Matheson)

Yes, Houston is HOT and HUMID in the summer BUT in the fall, winter and early spring, it's HEAVEN! Temps in the mid 60s - low 80s and low humidity, too! That's why Hollywood is starting to film more movies here plus it's a non-union, right-to-work state! Some of you may be too young to remember but in the early 80s a lot of folks from up north migrated to Houston for 'a better life' (we called 'em 'snowbirds'!). Anyhow, Houston is a cool town with LOTS of wide open spaces to shoot a movie especially downtown! I work downtown and today while driving down Main Street, I envisioned Supes flying between the buildings with his red cape flowing behind him...cool! The buildings in downtown Houston have a majestic grandeur to them but they're also far enough apart that you can get good shots for a movie without scrunching everything up! And, as previously stated above, most of the buildings in downtown Houston are pretty modern in scope although the Esperson Building and the Gulf Building look like they should be in the 'Doc Savage' movie (hint, hint!)...If you want to see shots of those buildings, click here: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/lcseiler/houdn6.htm Anyhow, here's hoping that the scouts for the new Superman movie will give SERIOUS consideration for Houston to be Metropolis!

    Smith's script, and...

    by bionicdave

    1) Who gives a flying fart about what city they use for Metropolis? I'm sure whatever place they find will LOOK decent enuff; that's easy to do/fix in post anyway.
    2) I'm a great fan of Kevin Smith's work, from his movies to his comics to his website ramblings, but I must admit his Supes script was surprisingly weak. The reason? Supes was BARELY IN IT! Between Luthor, Brainiac, Eradicator, Lois, Jimmy, L-RON (what kinda freaky-ass Scientology riff is THAT?!), and the seemingly hundreds of other characters in this script, Superman was left with very little screen time, and when he did get lines, they didn't sound like Superman AT ALL. After reading Smith's wonderful Daredevil comics I was kinda shocked to see him drop the ball here.
    3) Can't wait to see kids refusing to buy new Superman action figures because the Nic Cage likeness will be too scary and ugly; expect a surge in eBay prices for older Superman figures.

    Houston

    by vanillalady

700 Louisiana is a cool building, but there are other places in Houston that could pass for futuristic - like the intersection at Richmond and Sage, and the whole Uptown area (love those light fixtures!) Darn it, and the movie may be filmed there, and I had to move away before this happens. Heck, I didn't know that Arlington Road was filmed there until I read this TalkBack! I'm still miffed about missing Rushmore. Geez....

    Who Should Be Cast

    by barron34

Ben Affleck as Kent/Superman (he is a bland, all-American type, which is bad for many roles, but right for Supes). Affleck is a name star that will put asses in the seats. Daniel Day-Lewis is an interesting choice also, but I think Affleck has a broader appeal. ***Courtney Cox is a good choice for Lois Lane, but she is a bit too old to play against the younger Affleck, plus, her resemblence to the earlier Lois, Margot Kidder, is so close as to be annoying. Perhaps a different take on Lois should be done, instead of klutzy chick, she should be competent, globe-trotting super-reporter. Neve Campbell?***I think that an inspired choice for Lex Luthor would be Michael Douglas. He is a great actor with a charismatic presence who would make a strong and magnetic Luthor, essentially playing a super-villain version of Gordon Gecko. Maybe even the lucious Catherine Zeta-Jones could having a supporting part as Luthor's femme fatale partner-in-crime? Dream-casting.***Patrick Stewart as the malevolent and alien Brainiac. Any other choice would be second best.*** Regarding other cast choices, Kevin Spacey doesn't ring true for me as Luthor. He is too creepy and not much like Luthor. he is a great actor, though, and would make a perfect Joker, should Warner Brothers ever get their heads screwed on straight regarding the Batman franchise.*** Regarding Nic Cage as Supes: Cage is a compelling guy on-screen, but he is a very bad fit for Superman. He always plays dark and weird, while Superman is just the opposite: bright and wholesome. Further, he bears no resemblence to Superman. Cage's hair is receded, he has beady eyes, a big, weird nose, a weak chin, and a weird, off-beat personality. Cage is seriously miscast as Superman, and should stick to his regular, off-beat characters.*** Regarding the quotes from Warners producers "we don't care about the story/whether the movie is good. We care about selling toys." Frankly, if you cast the movie well, get a good script, a good director ,and a good production team, and go on to make a good movie, then THE MOVIE WILL BE A BIG HIT, and hit movies sell toys. Shit movies do not make money or sell toys. Good movies do. Make a good movie, and financial rewards will follow. this is the chief argument that should be made to execs as to why you should focus on making a quality movie, in terms they can understand:dollars.

*** I WOULD PREFER TO SEE NICOLAS CAGE AS BRAINIAC ***

    by renaud b

BUT PLEASE NOT AS SUPERMAN,HE'S NOTHING LIKE HIM.

AS FOR THE COSTUME IF IT"S A DEATH & REBIRTH MOVIE I HOPE THERE'S GOING TO BE AT LEAST 3 DIFFERENT ONES,THE CLASSIC BLUE TIGHTS & RED UNDERWEAR FOM THE BEGINNING OF THE MOVIE UNTIL THE DEATH.SUIT NUMBER 2 JUST LIKE IN COMIC BOOKS THE ALL BLACK WITH SILVER EMBLEM WICH WILL BE COMPLETELY DESTROYS IN A BATTLE,AND SUIT NUMBER 3 A NEW IMPROVED VERSION RED & BLUE BUT WITH NO MORE TIGHTS AND UNDERWEAR.AS FOR THE COOL ELECTRIC BLUE SUIT WHICH I PERSONALLY LIKE VERY MUCH,NO MATTER WHAT DIE HARD FANS SAY,WELL FOR THAT COSTUME THERE'S ALWAYS THE SEQUEL *** SUPERMAN TRANSFORMED ***.

    My friends call me HI

    by baldsteve

I know cage is going to be superman, everybody does, I'm sure he'll be fine just like keaton ruled for Batman, the only thing is like was previously posted, we all have preconceived ideas of Mr. Cage... I for one can only see him as HI from Raising Arizona, I never type casted Keaton, I mean when I saw him in Batman, I didn't think..."Holy shit, It's Mr. Mom" but with Cage I just see him stealing other peoples babies and robbing huggies from convenience stores...

WHY DO WE HAVE TO HAVE CAGE ANYWAY

What's this obsession with making a SUPERMAN out of Nicolas Cage?Did the Hollywood mafia take control of the SUPERMAN movie rights and they want to put their boy in the movie or what?

DON'T COUNT ON RED UNDERWEAR & BLUE TIGHTS

    by renaud b

The rumors is all black I suppose like in thr rebirth with silver emblem.I would not be suprise also to see a new suit with classic colors but without the tights & underwear on the outside. And it's about time they fix Superman up with a cool more modern look.As for the old costume maybe they will show an improved version just before his death.SUPER HEROES IN UNDERWEAR AND TIGHTS IS NOT VERY COOL AND IT'S ABOUT TIME SUPERMAN GETS HIS MAKE-OVER.

    You're missing the point.

    by vegas

Even if Superman's costume looks dated, you cannot change it. The costume is emblamatic of not just Superman, but of everything that he stands for, of America even. To fuck with the "tights and underwear" is to suggest that America should get itself a cool new silver and black flag. T'would be missing the point to change it, so don't.

    Reply to Talkback

  • and the all black and silver look was one of the cool looks Superman had when he came back from the dead.I also like very much the electric blue suit, but that would be too much for a single movie, maybe a sequel. As for the tights, there should be a law forbitting super heroes to wear tight and underwear.Good old Hal Jordan should have had the same improvements in the past. And since I'm writing about GREEN LANTERN here's my idea for a long overdue movie, something I would much prefer over a Batman Year One or a Superman Lives.../// ******* GREEN LANTERN THE MOVIE *******

    Chapter 1:
I would have the very first scenes of GREEN LANTERN THE MOVIE to start out with a very spectacular and massive destruction of Coast City and Hal Jordan(Kirt Russell) arriving to late to save his family and friends. After great sadness, rage starts to take over;and a very shocked and troubled Hal would blame the blue Guardians for everything and he would go after them hitting on everything and everyone put in his path to stop him.But in the end instead of killing everyone he just hurts,do a lot of destruction and leaves(partly based on 1993 to 1994 from issues #46 to #50).

    Chapter 2:
One of the space guardians still healthy enough to travel is being given a mission to find a new man to wear the emerald ring the most powerful weapon in the universe,to become the new GREEN LANTERN.Invisible to everyone on Earth he wonders around until he sees a youth man Kyle Rayner(Keanu Reeves) from which he sense a good and pure heart.Than he reveals himself to Kyle hands him the ring with very little information about it,then the blue guardian quickly leaves ,very worried about his own people.

    Chapter 3:
Young Kyle Rayner slowly discovers the powers he now has, until the day good old Sinestro knock at his door to get his ring and become the master of the universe with it and all the other rings he stole.Eventually the battle between the two finds its way in outer space where a trap has been set for him all along with Sinestro and his associates.

    Chapter 4:
When thing becomes hopeless for Kyle and he's about to be killed, suddenly from nowhere Hal Jordan appears to save him and they manage to make their getaway inflicting great damage to the real enemies.

    Chapter 5:
A finale showdown is unavoidable and soon after Sinestro and his friends catch up with them and in greater numbers. This time both Kyle and Hal face extinction.they give them a great fight, but two against hundreds of Sinestro's friends prove to be to much, until some old friend Alan Scott the original GREEN LANTERN arrives with a full corps of GREEN LANTERNS that have comes from everywhere in the universe.I guess after that everyone knows the enemies had their @$$ quick pretty hard.but in the end Sinestro was no where to be found.

Let's not kill him right away we might need him for a sequel, right?
